Normally when we think of a typical space strategy game we imagine it to be PC turn-based single player, especially if we’re talking about 4x games. What if this is about to change?
I decided to write this post to share with you my experiences playing space and non-space Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) games, check out my blog post here: Can MMO games be the future of 4x space strategy?
It would be very interesting to get feedback from you guys, the space (and also the non-space) gaming community. Do you play MMO games? If so which ones do you currently play (or played), and which of these do you recommend to other gamers and why? Ultimately it would be very interesting to discuss here your opinion on if MMO games could be the new paradigm for 4x space strategy.
Please post your comments here, or in the blog post above if you prefer.
Cheers

I think it wont happen and I agree also no. I mean how they did GaCiv2 was damn near perfect... I mean 2 loaded expansions, and constantly updating it in between expansions and still after the last expansion... I mean you could say give us more expansions, which I think for future games will be way easier for them. (Can't wait for GalCiv3!)
I don't see how you work around people who started early in the MMORTS versus people who started late.
I was heavily playing http://www.imperion.org/ until I ran into their solution to the high level player versus newb problem. In Imperion you couldn't take someone else's starting planet. If another player colonized a second planet, then you could temporarily occupy one of their planets for some weak rewards. No colonies could be wiped out.
MMO's just don't seem to lend themselves to a RTS gameworld. Perhaps an MMO which had instanced RTS combat?
there is a game call Beyond Protocol, which is the online version of Sins. I have not tried it, but it does not look that much different than Sins, except it is online.
Well, for the top 5% of players for Eve Online in 0.0 it might be a "space strategy" game. But that is debatable. Most never get that kind of power to micro. Only the CEOs and directors of the top alliances in that game play the build, conquer, diplomacy game.
Other than that, as frogboy put... no...
The way MMOs are set up, not every character will be a big wig with armadas of ships and worlds in the balance unlike 4x where players definately have power. Not everyone will get to play Darth Vader, most will be a stormtrooper.
An emphatic NO, to say the least.
