Or is Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri from 1998 the only one in this genre?
Would love some tips on some new game alteratives, because AC has aged very badly...
Bah AC is a great game!
Utopia from 1991?
I wholeheartedly agree with you. But it gets boring visually after a while, and I have been playing it for some time. My eyes want some candy, and my ehhh...dare I say "brain", wants something new.
It's pretty sad, than every other genre out there is lacking with originality, and the Sci-Fi builder Civ is so very very empty.
umm... outpost 1? its old... and... i think the community managed to fix most of the bugs... but its still not totally complete... i dont think...
http://www.outpostuniverse.net/
really good story... basicly... the earth is about to fracking go boom... but humans know this... so they build a freaking space ship (and you have to manage how much stuff you want to bring... and you cant take everything)... and they run away... and you have to be lucky enough to find a marginaly habital planet... (you can lose the game before you even start building your first building)... and then you have to be very carefull in the beginning of the game cause if you dont get your population down to the surface fast enough... they all tend to die... cause they are no longer in stasis.... it took me a few tries to just get past the initial shizznits... and then it becomes a turn based colony sim. still rather hard though... on the easy difficulity...
outpost one was a colony builder... outpost 2 was a rts... but you had to manage your population as well. really... really... good story line with outpost 2 though... the little novela that you read after every mission is really good. I think outpost 2 was alot more fun... while still had some of the elements of outpost one... it was set later... and has war... and had something that will prolly end up giving you nightmares... ( i mean seriously... the intro vid+the eden beginning campain vid+ the first chapter of the eden book is friggen scarry! read it before you do the first mission... )
edit: Oh ya, they are both free from that website... you may need some old video codecs... for the movies (the game loses alot without them) but all those people in their forums are really nice and will help with anything. (as long as you do a search or 2 first... since almost everything has already been answered.)
Ah yeah, good old Outpost. I played them a lot back in the day.
However, I should of pointed out I was looking for something "new". I'll add that to the top post, sorry about that. Great suggest btw, thanks.
Er, its not new, but the only one I can think of is M.A.X -- awesome game!
and if you want Civ in space, of course, and not "cities" then go check out Galactic Civilizations 2, of course!
There are several inbuilt scifi scenarios in Civilization 4 and their expansions. It's quite amazing how flexible the Civ-engine is.
There's even an alpha centauri mod for it but I think it doesn't support different terrain levels, which was kinda the coolest thing in AC.
Civ II: Test of Time... but I think this is going in the other direction from the one you wanted.
If you are looking for a browser type game in the Civ genre then look into http://www.Lordempires.com
It is a totally new game just starting in October, still in beta and is yet to be completed plus it is text based (so nowhere near the graphics of a CIV) but the concept is similar, you run a city, connect roads, send trade partners and unite with other rulers to form clans and so on. So i guess it is a combination of Sim City and Civ, well worth trying out if you like games like that.
Capelli, as much as I appreciate the suggestion. It was not at all what I was looking for, I did state in the title I am looking for something Sci-Fi.
And to answer your question, no I am not looking for browser games.
oh AC i loved you.. a long time ago.
If you find anything keep me posted.
you could try galciv 2. its a little hokey and more outerspace than world building. but it IS a turnbased science fiction empire building game.
Yeah, I do have GalCivII. But miss the Civ part...lol
personally i dropped it like a ... well a buggy hokey tbrpg. of course i was playing it on my old shitty computer. regardless.
super micro is not... up my alley. flashin lights and countrstrike ae more my deal.
ahh well no probs
