So, now that the first episode has aired, what do you think?
Other than the style (too BSG/Defying Gravity (camera shots and flashbacks) for my taste - it seems the norm these days though) I like it so far.
Good story line, good cast and characters, and a fresh new twist to the SG saga.
Although, why hasn't there been any mention of an actual FTL drive in the other series? If so many ships were sent out with these drives, it should have been noticed by either SG1 or SGA in their searches of the Ancients databases.
But overall, I am looking forward to (hopefully) several more new seasons of Stargate.
Ok just watched the latest pile of crap. This episode was just horrible. "OMG my ex-boyfriend is sleeping with my best friend and I'm just gonna get drunk about it and cry to Eli and then kiss him and then call him a great friend"
What
The
F!
And how about O'Neill's hard-nosed approach in this series? Totally out of character.
The whole show seems to be about how to create the most conflict between people. Even the ending when Telford shows up at Emily's front door. What?! Now we get an affair starting (or continuing) between those two, and the old one between Young and the good doctor possibly heating up again?
PLEASE!!!! This is turning into a very bad soap.
I thought it was hilarious that Telford and Young switched back while Young was getting it on. The look on Telfords face and Youngs face when that happened. At the same time, Ive got to question why Youngs wife would willingly have sex with Young when she only sees Telfords face. Technically shes banging Telford.
I really didnt pay too much attention in this episode, it was your typical waste time episode. But I guess now that Rush Tricked Telford and the two idiot scientists, getting home anytime soon, just isnt going to happen (could of seen that coming). Rush on the other hand, just continues to dig himself a hole, deeper and deeper each episode. He might be doing whats neccessary on some occasions like this last episode. But the fact he acts like he cant relay this info to the other Crew members tells me hes not to be trusted.
I love how Telford ran for the communication rocks when shit started to hit the fan, shows hes as much a coward as hes a backstabbing ass. I can just imagine him saying something to Youngs wife to not only get under Youngs skin but to also tear him down through an affair.
And Chloe DIDNT kiss Eli, He imagined it. Ie the reason she goes from kissing him to staring at hime and shes asking him WHAT?!
We all new this was going to happen. The writers and producers all said in the prior to premieres that the show was going to be about internal conflict. That doesnt mean its ok. It means the producers and writers have finally lost their ability to come up with new ideas. And so theyve turned to the good old "drama in space" idea. Where instead of dealing with a 2000 year old Sembiont that claims to be a god. You now have an hours worth of bickering and bawling (chloe...........seems she cant stop finding something to act like a child about). And Eli, wtf was with him thinking his mom is an idiot.
The next episode looks like it has some potential to be more then the typical bitch.........bitch...........bitch.............oh wait the ship saved us thank god we get to live for another day episode. But somehow I have a feeling itll be something like...aliens killed us in the past?...............bitch...................bitch...................bitch................oh the ship saved us again.......
My grandmother reached her limit, so I only saw about ten minutes of it yesterday. Sounds like I was lucky.
I just gave up my last bit of hope for the show. Just this second. All the good writers in the world couldn't turn this around.....
Wow im really not even paying attnetion to it while i watch it lol
i wasnt either, i just happened to look up at the tv when they kissed, and mid kiss he snapped out of his little daydream. She then said the damning words geeks so commonly hear "your a good friend"
Hahaha, great recap.... however i think it was tad better than three previous episodes. But still far from at least good indeed.
I find the shift of the show from "bad aliens pretending to be good aliens" to "Telford visits Young´s wife pretending he is Young to f**k her" to be most interesting.... I wonder if the creators of the show really think, that this is what the SG fans wanted.
I dont think they give a fuck what the REAL fans want. Its all about the flipfloppers, who arent fans just people who enjoy the "new" take on an established franchise. Take BSG for instance, while there were alot of fans that came out of the original show, most of them were newcomers who never heard of BSG before the miniseries dropped. Reason for watching was the emphasis on the soap opera style drama. Which seems to be the new "it" thing in American TV Culture. It was reality television a few years ago. Now its Space Dramas. Honestly I dont see this show lasting longer then three seasons. The true Fanbase has already become disillusioned with SGU within 5 episodes and those that have hung on wont hang on forever when it doesnt pick up pace and start giving us what we watch SG for, Gate travelling, exploring new worlds worth exploring, meeting new people, learning crazy things about ourselves and our peoples history, and the EPIC fights that you see in SG1. When the majority of original fans cant take it anymore. the Producers will see how little they pulled in for this show, and will regret pushing this crap as SG canon.
well, thank fuck nobody paid attention to what the original fans wanted, because the original was shit and the new BSG has set the new standard in scifi television. the reason people watched it was because it was awesome, not because there was an emphasis on "soap opera style drama". these shows have a genre you know, they're called space operas, and they allow for far more depth in story telling than SG-1, the epitome of mediocrity.
I think Rush also wasn't sure of who could be trusted, and he wanted their reactions to be genuine. However, it seems apparent that he clued some of the staff in on his plan, since they reported back to Rush the moment the chickens left via the mind-swapping stones.
I was a fan of SG1 when it was new, however, this is more like Star Trek: The Next Generation in its soap opera type drama, or perhaps an order of magnitude more. Either way, though it is unlike the original, it is good in its own way. Perhaps not appealing to the same market which liked both McGyver and Chariots Of The Gods, but meh, the less empasis on that one dudes conjecture about the gods of ancient civilizations being aliens and the more emphasis on space travel and humanity, I think the better.
I think you mean firefly
check around 16mins into the first episode of BSG, you'll see serenity taking off in the backgrond, she's also in the fleet a few times thoughout the seasons.
Come on, SG1 was not that bad...and it was much more sci-fi than Universe so far. Not every show needs to have deep characters and emotional stuff and if i watch sci-fi, i would like to see what i like about sci-fi most - that means mysterious aliens, cool spaceships and space battles, various planets and interesting SCI-FI storyarcs...i liked BSG and watched it not because of "Helo - Sharon - Chief" love triangle, but because of the main story arc (war with cylons, looking for Earth, mysterious stuff regarding humanity and Cylon history, Lords of Kobol, etc...). so far SGU lacks this kind of stuff completely, in fact it is just a random soap opera set in the spaceship and that is the whole sci-fi aspect of this show. And to be fair, there are better non-scifi dramas than this, for example i recently saw Dead Like Me and it was just perfect.
Long story short, IMHO the problem of SGU is not that it is something more than SG-1, but that, it is nothing like SG-1.
If they wanted to do a space opera they could have just made a new show, they didnt have to fuck with an already established franchise. Raist, your the only one here thats calling SG1 shit, so obviously your in the minority, and minority doesnt mean your smarter, or more informed or more right about something. SG1 fans arent your typical buy into crap type of SciFi fans, they expected SG1 to be at a certian standard. And when the Producers and writers fucked up they heard from the fans. Just because a show was popular doesnt mean the majority of people watching it are idiots buying into bull. Most of the people I know that are the flipflopping type fans are into stupid ass shows where the same person keeps coming back season after season looking for "love" from 20 total strangers. And somehow theyre supposed to find that certian one while only having limited time with the strangers. SG1 fans are attentive and when they see major issues with the storyarc they let the Producers and Writers know they were being idiots. Most of the good shows that go off television is because the majority of idiots were upset but didnt want to speak up. SouthLand is a good example of that. NBC pulled because of Lenos new talk show. Which sucks. SG1 lasted 10 seasons, even though they were ready to put it to bed in season 8. Exactly why they tied up all the storyarcs in one season. Before introducing the Ori.
oh yeah, firefly is awesome. such a shame about the axing. still though, im getting into dollhouse now. joss is great.

i expect SG1 to be a certain standard too. shit. and it has been amazingly consistent throughtout!
Come on, SG1 was not that bad
hehe, sorry but its one of my personal pet peeves, and i truly believe it was that awful. not quite as bad as sliders, but almost there.
you have your opinion, unfortunately its not that important.
Well everyone in this thread seems to beat down anyone's opinion that is against SG1, I guess some care.
Stargate Universe....yawn.....better off watching a Jetsons' rerun!
true, but considering the owners of the SG franchise chose to do something with SGU other than reproduce the childish, dumbed-down extravaganza that constitutes SG1, your opinion doesn't seem like it counted for much either. but dont worry, there will always be plenty of awful & mainstream scifi for you to enjoy.
I actually dont like all too much of scifi, to be honest most of the Scifi i see on television makes me shake my head in shame. But I enjoyed SG1 because it focused on whats more important in Scifi then drama (which has its place in soap operas) and thats exploring new and exciting places, Meeting different cultures and the advancement of technology. Because they chose not to be "So Human" as to take up entire episodes arguing about being the last person on the shuttle so they can survive. Is just too much. And to be honest Id rather watch SG1 (which you think is childish) then watch two grown ass men acting childish about who gets to be incharge. Somehow because SGU is "realistic" its somehow better? So what your saying is you prefer characters to act like they have no responsibilites then for a character to show what it means to be responsible.
i havent watched SGU, and i dont plan to because SG1 sucks so much arse (though i am intrigued by the hatred for SGU by fans). but no, i would say i prefer characters that have depth and undergo development rather than watching archetypal heroes deal with their "monster of the week" problem, again and again and again and again.
lol. i thank north america for growing up and moving scifi beyond this format used since the 1960s. when you read a book do you call it a "soap opera" because there is drama? haha. there are fundamental differences between a soap opera and a space opera, but i wouldn't expect an SG1 fan to know this.
Yes, and your the expert. Arrogance gets you no where. If you actually did watch SGU instead of coming in here to talk shit. Youd see what people are talking about literally 55 minutes of the show is devoted to arguing. Thats not drama, thats an arguement.
And to assume that SG1 is all I watch, and all I care about goes to show how retarded your thought process is. I read plenty of books, and none of them have what SGU calls drama. And Space Opera is just a play on words it changes nothing about the fact it does the same thing as a soap opera does, spends 55 minutes out of an hour talking to each other and getting no wheres. If thats your idea of drama, you go ahead and enjoy it. But I prefer drama that will actually accumalate to something in a reasonable amount of time.
nope. i told you you wouldn't understand. tsk tsk.
I'm waiting for the name change: "Lost in Space, the Toddler Years"
Not having come from the stereotyped(hopefully?) trailer park trash environment where everyone was a slut, drank themselves into a stupor, had mental problems, etcetera, I can't see how this show could possibly qualify as mature. I don't know anyone that I could classify as mature who behaves in a manner similar to that of the leads. The entire cast is a bunch of five year olds, minus the whole playing doctor bit. People aren't that fucked up. When I was in high school, and that was only a decade back, even the high schoolers weren't that fucked up. These are highly trained individuals that have been sent off world to a top secret military installation that even most of the higher ups in the government aren't allowed to know about.
Why are they so fucked up that such a collection of individuals would only be found in a traumatically dramatic soap opera? Being put into a more stressful situation gives them a little leeway, but they're behaving like grade schoolers at best. The geek that lives with his mother is probably the least unbalanced of the lot, it's preposterous. Call SG1 dumbed down all you want, but you have the mentality of a five year old if you find the behavior of five year olds representative of an adult show.
