So, now that the first episode has aired, what do you think?
Other than the style (too BSG/Defying Gravity (camera shots and flashbacks) for my taste - it seems the norm these days though) I like it so far.
Good story line, good cast and characters, and a fresh new twist to the SG saga.
Although, why hasn't there been any mention of an actual FTL drive in the other series? If so many ships were sent out with these drives, it should have been noticed by either SG1 or SGA in their searches of the Ancients databases.
But overall, I am looking forward to (hopefully) several more new seasons of Stargate.

If Eli becomes the lead scientist, I will lul harder than I have ever luled before. That role does not fit him at all.
true he may not be the official lead scientist. but may be the one everyone will look to.
i mean he came out of no where and figuared out how to dial the gate. he is the one who seems to be making things to make things easier. he is also the one who wants to document everything.
just because the plot of the episodes is predictible (which... in these 16 pages, seems to be the largest complaint)... doesnt mean that it isnt any good.

I mean... a line pops out "whatcha going to do? shoot me"? 30 min later he shoots her. and the entire time i was picturing the end fight... and i was spot on.
but its still an awsome movie.
just because something is predictible... does not mean its bad...
call it foreshadowing... and suddenly its a tool story tellers can use.
so even though SGU is predictible... I still think it is a good show.
i am not worried about it being predictable. most movies are, at least to me. i usually have most of the mystery ones figuared out in the first ten minutes of the movie.
its not the predictability... for instance the whole recharging in the sun thing was a really nice touch that i only got 5 mins before it happened... though that could be because instead of fixing problems, they are all sitting around whining at how woesome their lives are... fucking pussies... its reality, get with it
thats the problem most people have with the show, its LAME, to put it bluntly, its like some shitty soap opera but with less pregnancy and cheating and more "omg im so scientist SLASH emo with slimy politician mixed in"
That won't last very long. The 'slut' just needs a little more time for that to happen.
I've been watching the Atlantis series of Stargate now, since I wasn't able to when it aired due to my stepdad, but I think it is actually way better in a lot of areas than both SGU and even SG1. It's less goofy than SG1, yet still funny. Less dire than SGU, yet still serious. There isn't so much of "the paramids were built by aliens" of the Chariots Of The Gods fame which SG1 was overtly full of. There aren't any sex scenes in Atlantis, though those aren't necessary anyway.
One set of lines I found humorous in in episode was,
WEIR: The city can handle that? McKAY: Yes -- theoretically. SHEPPARD: Like dinosaurs turned into birds theoretically, or theory of relativity theoretically? Stargate Atlantis, season 1, episode 10
I think Atlantis is the best of the series now.

Though that does bring to mind a possible rescue for the Destiny's crew...If they can figure out their exact coordinates, Atlantis could EASILY get to them in a matter of days, thanks to the Experimantal Hyperdrive they used to get from Pegasus to Earth in just a few seconds in the last episode. And all they'd need is a ZPM or 2...Probably some on Destiny somewhere. If not, they could find one just in time like they always do.
I mean, the Atlantis is floaing in San Fransico Bay. Not like it's stuck, just don't got no power.

Actually more like a few tens of thousands of ZPMs. Pegasus is right next door, a part of our local group less than 3 million light years away. They mentioned that destiny is on the other side of the universe. Being as the universe is roughly 93 Billion light years across, makes things a bit more difficult:)
but in the original movie they stated that abados(spch) was on the other side of the universe too.
Where did you come up with that figure?
The edge of observation is about 13.7 billion lightyears, currently, but even if the radius were 20 billion lightyears, then the diameter would be about 40 billion. Of course, in the Gamov/"big bang" model, the universe has no center or edge so in such a universe you could travel all you like in one direction and never reach the edge of matter. If the universe is closed, then you'd wind up where you started, but if it were, then you could travel infinitely in one direction and never return to the same location.

I didn't know that part...Though i don't think you're quite right about the ammount ZPMs...I think Atlantis at full power could make the jump. Maybe not come BACK, but get there, at least. I'd say more but SOMEBODY doesn't lke spoilers, so...
the distance that we are at from earth even at hyper drive it would take years for atlantis to get there. remember this ship although not traveling at hyper speed has been travel ftl for 1 million years and thus is at least 1 million light years away probable closer to 1.5 million years.
yeah, but all the distances in SGU are screwed up... like i said a few pages back: any Stargate in both the Milky Way and Pegasus can reach any other stargate in their respective galaxies... so why only in SGU do they have to "get in range" of gates?
by extension, the other side of the universe could just be a few galaxies over...
power. remember that the it took the power of a planetary core to get them there.
yeah, but like i said, its irrelevant... first, the science is sketchy.. all they said was the core of the planet generate energy... but not how it does so... i know they said something about radiation etc... but without getting into the Theory of Nuclear Power, radiation etc doesnt generate power without a generator...
basically, we saw in the first episode a hologram of the location of Earth in relation to the Destiny, and yeah, it was a fair few galaxies away. but like i said, they've moved away from some basic Stargate canon which calls the whole range thing into question...
technically... there has to be more energy in a Star than in any planet, no matter how exotic it's core is... once they get control of the ship, theory would dictate that they park themselves in a star, soak up all the power they can, or even just channel some straight into the gate like they did in that episode where the scientists from Earth came to 'help'
of course... if that happened there would be no story... so really i think we are stuck with these people until the bitter (however shortlived) end
A ship can't use an on-board Stargate while in transit and every time you approach a planet with a stargate, you have to calibrate your position. At that point, they are likely connected to the entire network. We haven't really seen anything saying otherwise.
no... im pretty sure one of the tech's keeps saying - everytime the ship stops 'near' a gate - he says "We're in range of a gate"
given... although i remember a fair few Goa'uld motherships carrying SG's... yes, they may have had to be recalibrated, but it obviously isnt so hard... in fact, its meant to be done, and regardless, it wouldnt affect the ability for the destiny gate to reach any other gate in their 'galaxy'
they may enter a galaxy that doesn't have a gate. there was an earlier robot ship that seeded gates for the Destiny's crew. and your right they should be able to access any gate that is in the galaxy that they are in. but in the first episode they were able to dial three gates. except the computer had locked two of them out.
as for the recharge episode. i knew what was going to happen from the previews to the episode.
yeah yeah, like i said though... they had to be in range... only 3 gates? and dont tell me they are jumping from galaxy to galaxy so quickly. if so, there is no way they could possibly 'explore' each galaxy sufficiently...
