Since there are players here that could beat the Hard AI 9 vs 1, diplomancy will be easier since we may divide and conquer easily with the current levels. I'm suggesting that levels above Unfair be added with the AI recieving extra capital ships and low tier techs bonuses. Let's say:
Unfair + : AI gets a random Ice/Fire planet colonization tech researched.
Unfair ++ : AI gets a Akkan/Progneiter/Jarrusal at the start with both Ice and Fire planet colonization techs researched.
I think the issue you had locutus1071 with the IA unable to break through your chocke points has no meaning. Even I, human, would have been unable to break your defense (how much time have you been playing to get 50 carriers defense ?). I mean, once i played a game against 9 unfair IA and crushed their 9 fleets attacking in the same time (around 3000 ennemy fleet supply i think) with a fully upgraded advent starbase and a 500 supply strong fleet. IA unable to break incredible defense is normal : the issue is about their poor sieging strategy (don't retreat capital ships when it is clear that they will die against a starbase, suicide attacks against starbase and so on).
for the too small fleet issue, i agree with you : it is one of the problem of entrenchment : the IA spend too much money in defenses and not enough in offense so their fleets are too small.
You obviously havent played my favorite map: Gateway, its the perfect turtle map.
To your issue, the AI will send the size fleet necessary to take the planet based on the defenses reported by the scout they send there to investigate.
Try this: Play Gateway 5v1, capture Gateway, and put your entire fleet there with a starbase, turretts, fighter bays, mines, planetary shields, etc., and then.....wait.
Sometimes they wont come, they'll just keep sending scouts hoping you moved your fleet. So then just build a superweapon in the second star system and set it to auto-fire. Since they can only get to the second star system by going thru Gateway, they are forced to attack.
Now, sit back and watch with amazement as 15+ caps, 200+ fighter/bombers, and 100's of other ships flood Gateway.
I tell you, when I play Gateway as TEC, and they flood me with all those ships, then I evacuate my fleet, and wait until all those ships move within range of my starbase, then hit the big red button and then *boom*...all gone.
One thing that would (I think) be simple to fix is the average size of AI fleets. Even playing against one or two Unfair AI enemies in entrenchment, the AI seems simply incapable of massing a fleet with sufficient strength to punch out one of my strong points.
