So this is the Advent version of the original Vasari history thread (http://forums.impulsedriven.com/363669) and the new TEC history thread (http://forums.impulsedriven.com/364997).
Basically, this is a spot where the Sins community can place all their thoughts on anything that has to do with Advent history and culture, and we as a group can decide what we'd like to actually have as part of the Advent lore (unoffically, of course). This is the spot for any holes in the Advent lore that you'd like to fill. And this is the spot where you place any really awesome ideas about the Advent that you'd like to share with everyone. I'll add some things later, but feel free to begin posting stuff. And I highly recommend going to the Vasari and TEC versions and placing your comments or even ideas on the topics discussed there. Happy idea spamming!
Also: I'll update this top part once we've come to an agreement on the ideas discussed here.
Current lore:
The origins of the Advent began well before recorded history. It is said that they began as one of many broken peoples who sought spiritual escape on peripheral worlds following the great wars. the earliest known records trace back to the formation of the Trade Order. At its inception, the Order sent emissaries to recruit all known inhabited planets into the organization. One such group discovered a single desert planet orbiting a massive red star surprisingly populated by a thriving civilization. Excited by the profitability of this potential market, the Order authorized immediate integration and the emissaries initiated contact. The representatives of the planet decidedly rejected the membership offer. Not willing to accept failure, the Order sent a series of market research teams to acquire data that could be used to formulate a more elaborate strategy. They received a single, incomplete report containing disturbing information. Shocking acts of deviancy, at every level of society, violated the venerable taboos common to all Trader worlds. Sinful cerebral integration technologies, unrestricted biological experimentation, strange forms of collectivism, and the wholesale usage of countless neurochemicals were but a few of the transgressions. The Trader Worlds overwhelmingly voted that such an aberration had no place within the territories of their new Order. With an instinctive fear, the Traders took control of the planet by force and exiled the inhabitants far into uncharted space. The exiles would integrate the story of their origins into myths and prophecies. They believed that their destiny was to exact retribution and assume their rightful place in the galaxy. One thousand years later, when it became clear that the rare and precious resources that empowered their unique way of life approached exhaustion, the society unanimously decided to return to their original home and fulfill their prophecies.
Here are the ship summaries for the Advent, as they add a bit to the little lore we have on the Advent, and they might spark an idea. I'll add my opinion to the summaries in [ ]. They are all opinions, so please argue with me about a take on a summary if you disagree with it.
Seeker Vessel
The Seeker Vessel is a fast-attack ship built for quickly scouting out enemy fleet positions and jumping back without being noticed. Its twin pulse lasers also make it useful in small skirmishes against lightly armored targets. Dedicated to the will of the Unity, Seekers will not hesitate to sacrifice a portion of their presence to follow the enemy or to martyr themselves against the hulls of the unenlightened. [maybe their captains are all tough men and slightly suicidal? Remember, Advent women did not work in the tasks that required small amounts of PsiTech.] Disciple Vessel Primary Armed with a single forward pulse laser, the Disciple Vessel may at first seem underpowered, but that is deceptive. Shedding extra crew compartments and relying on total integration of the ship‘s crew into its systems, the Disciple is agile and deadly. Once further trained and equipped, the Disciple Vessel submits itself to becoming an important battery of antimatter for the more powerful of the Unity‘s vessels, while at the same time denying antimatter to the enemy. The Disciple is crewed by expendable low-level Advent acolytes who have demonstrated their personal submission to the Unity, but have no particular psionic talents. [crewed by a couple of women "controlling" the psionic flows, but the ship is mostly male dominated] Illuminator Vessel The Illuminator Vessel is a frightening sight to behold on the battlefield and a true testament to the Advent‘s mastery of beam technology. Featuring not one but three long-range beam cannons, the Illuminator can quickly tear through shields and hull, leaving nothing but a cloud of debris in its wake. Despite its weak armor, the Illuminator is able to survive due to its ability to project false images of itself into the minds of nearby enemies, confusing and bewildering them. The adversary facing a cohort of Illuminators can never be sure of how numerous his enemies really are. [crewed by medium-level women capable of making psionic tricks. Most of the crew is male, as they are not needed for large psionic tasks.] Purge Vessel To the humans of the Trader Worlds, the shape of the Purge Vessel is reminiscent of a great bird, but it‘s one bird nobody wants to see in their sky. Lightly shielded with moderate armor, the Purge Vessel can rain down powerful kinetic bolts onto an undefended world, laying it to waste. Purge Vessel crews are recruited from amongst the most zealous of Advent converts, and see themselves as direct incarnations of the Unity‘s desire for retribution. Although the ship is not heavily armored or shielded, Purge Vessels will often rush through a contested area in their eagerness to deliver justice to the unfaithful. [run by the most zealous in the Advant race, no real need for women here, unless to fire the kinetic bolts a jumpstart of psionic energy is needed. but even then, a group of men working together could achieve the same end.] Defense Vessel Although designed to counter enemy fighters and bombers, the Defense vessel is also adept at taking on opposing frigates and cruisers. With its pulse laser turrets, the Defense is capable of targeting enemies in almost any direction. Single Defense Vessels are weak, but used in large numbers or as an escort group, they can be a force to be reckoned with, especially when used as escort for capital ships. An Advent crew member feels at ease when he can sense the presence of a fleet of Defense Vessels guarding his flank. [crewed by at least one low- to mid-level women. not a favorable job, but a noble one.] Missionary Vessel The Missionary ship spreads the Unity‘s will throughout the galaxy by seeding new Advent colonies on newly claimed worlds. Missionaries are given special psionic training that allows them to encourage indigenous peoples to submit to the will of the Unity, and to break the spirits of those who resist. In addition, specialized members of the Unity are onboard who are willing to separate themselves for long periods of time in order to establish isolated mining facilities. Like most colony ships, the Missionary is weakly armed and armored, and succeeds in battle by avoiding it at all costs. [almost all are women, thought not many are above low-level in PsiTech, as only special training is needed to crew a Missonary, not large amounts of psionic power. The name itself implies the Advent are deeply religious. The only men aboard this craft would be those willing to work in mining facilities.] Aeria Drone Host The Aeria Drone Host is the Advent answer to the TEC light carrier; the key difference being that its fighter/bomber squadrons are unmanned. Instead, multiple onboard psionic anima are integrated into the Aeria‘s systems, allowing multiple drone fighters/bombers to be piloted remotely using a highly sophisticated telepathic link. Anima members are among the most skilled psionics in the Unity, and their telekinetic skills are revered and feared even by those in higher castes. [unlike the Vasari and TEC who's fighter and bomber pilots are low ranking men/Vasari, the Advent fighter and bomber crews are high-level women. The Aeria permits no men to cross its threshold.] Iconus Guardian The Iconus Guardian is a relatively recent addition to the Advent fleet and reflects the new focus on ship shield technology. The hull of the ship is weak, but the Guardian has an extremely powerful shield generator, which can be projected outwards to protect nearby vessels. The shields do not completely prevent the target from being damaged, but they can help nearby ships to survive battles which would have otherwise have destroyed them. Guardians make excellent supporting ships and combined with offensively oriented ships, like the Destra, can be part of a devastating force. [crewed by low-level women, men making up the main work force. no psionic ability is needed besides that which is used to fly the ship. the shield generator is run with electrical energy, not psionic energy, and can be worked easily by males.] Domina Subjugator Utilizing the Advent‘s unique telepathic skills, the Domina‘s specialized hull is capable of projecting a psionic suppression field onto enemy ships. Once hit, the opposing crew is unable to move, rendering their vessel open to attack by more powerful Advent ships. This makes the Subjugator a fantastic complement to any of the more combat-oriented vessels, or to any of the Advent capital ships. Domina crews are highly trained psionics and can also telepathically encourage nearby ships‘ crews to work well past the point of exhaustion. [high-level women dominate the bridge, and most of the work force as well. a small portion of men also work on this ship.] Destra Crusader Destra Crusaders bring enlightenment to the masses, if not typically in a friendly manner. The Destra‘s design is dominated by four huge plasma cannons which make it more than a match for most enemy frigates and cruisers. The appearance of the Crusaders in the first few battles of the war marked the beginning of the end for the TEC forces. The resulting tales of the survivors created a widespread superstition in the TEC military that the appearance of a Destra on the battlefield signifies bad luck for the TEC. [crewed by low-level women, men make up the rest of the work force.] Radiance Battleship No ship personifies the Advent‘s vengeful nature more so than the Radiance Battleship. Literally bristling with varied energy weapons, it can unleash a torrential downpour of plasma bursts and laser fire. Those who endure such an onslaught have little respite, as the Radiance‘s axial beam cannon can cut a wide swath of destruction through enemy ranks. [as with all capital ships, women are what you'll find at every level of this ship, even working the cannons. there are perhaps a few men that will take up positions on a capital ship, but not many are allowed.] Revelation Battlecruiser Immense arrays of powerful PsiTech project through the hulls of the Revelation Battlecruisers, allowing them to amplify the natural skill of their Battle Psintegrae up to a planetary scale. While such power occasionally finds benign use, the Advent show little hesitation using it to channel their wrath and inflict chaos upon the hapless populations below. [high-level women only crewing this ship, although medium- and low-level women can work outside the bridge. men are not allowed.] Progenitor Mothership While the Advent certainly seek to exact revenge for their exile, they also strongly desire to spread the influence of the Unity. Few ships are as capable in this objective as Progenitor Motherships—their ability to tap into the Unity‘s collective consciousness is unrivalled. The most skilled Progenitor crews are so attuned to the Unity that they can psionically transfer the spirits of a destroyed ship‘s dead crew into another vessel. This ensures that the Advent‘s best and brightest are never truly lost, as their presence can be recovered and reinserted into willing hosts of the Unity. [the Advent have their own way of cloning, which involves removing an Advent's presence or "soul" from a dead body, no matter how mutilated, and replacing it in another willing Advent. The original soul of the host will be discarded or transplanted back into the dead body, and the new presence will have full control. this ship is crewed only by high-level women on all levels.] Halycon Carrier Responsible for remotely piloting groups of the Drone fighters, Drone Anima are valued crewmembers aboard all Advent capital ships. The most veteran of this caste are reserved for positions aboard Halcyon Carriers; leveraging the piloting skill of these elite Psintegrat allows the ship to host a veritable swarm of strike craft. Halcyon Carriers employ a number of systems to augment the combat effectiveness of their own fighter wings, as well as those of allies. [high-level women crew the ship and work the drone anima. the rest of the work force can be male, but will usually be mid- to low-level women.] Rapture Battlecruiser Rapture Battlecruisers carry relatively few and often lighter weapon emplacements than most similarly sized capital ships, leading many early TEC captains to believe they were an easy target. Such smugness often gave way to display as their crews faltered and succumbed to the true strength of the Rapture: an abundance of both advanced PsiTech and the Advent‘s most gifted Battle Psintegrat. [high-level women crew the ship and run the special abilities, the rest of the ship's tasks are run by high-level men (high-level by male standards)] I conclude from this that there is at least 10-20 women for every 1 male, probably much more than that, in Advent society. Everything else I believe I mentioned under each ship. Now I want to know your thoughts on my opinions, and your own opinions as well. Note: when I say crewed by women, I mean women in the bridge or command center. maybe captained by was the better phrase, but there you have it.

To the humans of the Trader Worlds, the shape of the Purge Vessel is reminiscent of a great bird, but
it‘s one bird nobody wants to see in their sky. Lightly shielded with moderate armor, the Purge Vessel
can rain down powerful kinetic bolts onto an undefended world, laying it to waste. Purge Vessel
crews are recruited from amongst the most zealous of Advent converts, and see themselves as direct
incarnations of the Unity‘s desire for retribution. Although the ship is not heavily armored or shielded,
Purge Vessels will often rush through a contested area in their eagerness to deliver justice to the
unfaithful.
[run by the most zealous in the Advant race, no real need for women here, unless to fire the kinetic bolts a jumpstart of psionic energy is needed. but even then, a group of men working together could achieve the same end.]
Defense Vessel
Although designed to counter enemy fighters and bombers, the Defense vessel is also adept at taking on opposing frigates and cruisers. With its pulse laser turrets, the Defense is capable of targeting enemies in almost any direction. Single Defense Vessels are weak, but used in large numbers or as an escort group, they can be a force to be reckoned with, especially when used as escort for capital ships. The Iconus Guardian is a relatively recent addition to the Advent fleet and reflects the new focus on
ship shield technology. The hull of the ship is weak, but the Guardian has an extremely powerful shield
generator, which can be projected outwards to protect nearby vessels. The shields do not completely
prevent the target from being damaged, but they can help nearby ships to survive battles which would
have otherwise have destroyed them. Guardians make excellent supporting ships and combined with
offensively oriented ships, like the Destra, can be part of a devastating force.
[crewed by low-level women, men making up the main work force. no psionic ability is needed besides that which is used to fly the ship. the shield generator is run with electrical energy, not psionic energy, and can be worked easily by males.]
Domina Subjugator
Utilizing the Advent‘s unique telepathic skills, the Domina‘s specialized hull is capable of projecting a psionic suppression field onto enemy ships. At the same time, you can argue that the nanites help men of the Advent reach levels of Psionic abilities. For all we know they may very well unlock the parts of the brain women only use for the use of men. But being that it took nanites to allow a man to use this part of his brain, he has to work at his Psionic abilities as where women seem to just seem to be naturally gifted
@Volt-Cruelerz - at first, i was thinking nanites for the Advent? That's too Vasari. but then I kept reading, and I kept thinking, and I gotta say, u make a good argument. also, ur nanite-grafting ideas made me think of the x-men movies. but anyway
i still stand firm in believing that the Advent can work their PsiTech solely with their mind. although the hand/nerve thing makes a lot of sense, I just believe the Advent can do it all without having to use their hands. But that's my opinion.
I especially like your descriptions of women-only areas of ships and the women-as-leader stuff. i wholeheartedly agree.
all in all, just a complete fountain of ideas. does anyone have any issues with volt's stuff? if not, i start a motion to make this the unofficial lore for the reason behind PsiTech.
@Allegience:
Exactly. Men could be adepts at it, but women are naturals which is exactly what the established lore says.
@CI: Thank you. Well, the problem is that the human mind itself is too round to do much by itself. It could act like an EMP or Repulse, but not the more directional ones...
True true. I never said I had a better idea, I'm just against the idea of a star wars force-type thing going on for the Advent. But it's just a little quibble. I could get used to it if nothing else comes up.
Well, while it would be cool if it did work without the use of limbs, I don't see it as feasible. This is more or less how every telekinetic super-power has ever worked.
I did figure it out one time though... The human mind could, in theory create an EMP of a few thousand joules, but it would kill the person. With nanites, of course it would be amplified, but you still have an omnidirectional pulse, rather than a focused one, unless of course you encased the user in a gyroscopic gimbal with an inner housing sphere made of graphite. That might work I suppose as it would reflect the pulse in a single direction much like a laser would work...
Like Ive said before, nothing states in the Lore women are the only ones at the top, only that they DOMINATE it. It doesnt say only women are found in the upper tiers of their society. So lets say theres 10 Coalescences? While there will be times in history there are only females in the Coalescences. There will be times where their might be as many as 3 males in the Coalescences. But being that they have to work for their powers more so then women. They arent AS common at the top tiers.
We all agree on that point. We all believe that men could be in the top, but it would be unlikely...
Now, I will discuss the gyroscopic gimbal idea I mentioned earlier...
The brain itself is more or less an orb. Any pulse coming out of it would be omnidirectional. Now, since the pulses would be magnetic, they could potentially be reflected. Currently, Graphite is the most diamagnetic material we know of. In other words, this material is pushed away by magnetic fields. However, if you make the graphite stationary, the magnetic field is what will bend.
Now, a gimbal is a system that uses accelerometers and motors to make something feel stationary even on a bumpy ride. For example, self driving cars have gimballed cameras so the picture isn't bumpy when on a gravel road.
Now, I'm sure we've all seen those weird spiny things that have concentric wheels inside of one another. They are commonly used to train astronauts. Anyways, using these would allow the person to more or less become a turret and face any direction they would choose.
Now, combine the above so you have the concentric wheels to allow aiming inside a massive gimbal assembly. Inside the inner ring would be the compartment in which the Psintegrate would be. The walls would be made of one meter of graphite coated on the outside by half a meter of daimond-nanofiber composite to prevent self destruction upon use.
This would only be used for the most powerful abilities as doing so would likely yield incapacitation of the user...
so how would Advent children be raised? aside from gaining access to the Unity collective mind pool, how would they be educated? raised? how and when would they start experimenting with psionic implants and the such? what would happen to silent ones?
I picture Advent children being raised in a similiar manner to the Vulcan children from the latest StarTrek film. Silent ones would be outcasts and it would be shameful to even go near one let alone speak to one. Silent ones would be treated like lepers.
Well, the body would have to be fully grown before implanting nanites would work.. Not to mention it would probably sterilize any young child which isn't exactly good for keeping your race alive. So the first say, 20 years of life are like any child's. At this point they are worthless to the Unity. Only once part of the neural network would someone be considered worthwhile.
Upon implantation, they would have to be genetically quarantined so as to prevent the nanites from trying to graft to someone else's DNA and thus causing a molecular war. During this time they would have to be suspended in some breathable liquid with ATP and glucose in it so as to feed the nanites as they function and multiply inside the host.
Once grafted, the person becomes one of the Unity and loses their individuality. The first few years would likely be nothing but the training of Psionic abilities. Those with powerful ones end up on capitals or Guardians. Weak ones end up on frigates.
Also, if someone's body rejected the nanites, then the person would be executed so as to prevent more genetic inferiors later on. This would mean that the Advent as a whole would almost be clones of one another. Now for normal humans such acts would be bad as it would yield recessive genes coming together, but by executing any with these imperfections, the Advent would become a super-race of sorts. Also, even if an immune deficiency crept up now and then, it would be neutralized by the nanites.
This Nazi-ish supremacy mentality would also give the TO a pretty darn good excuse to banish the Advent.
according to the lore in the manual the Advent children are taught at and early age to seek inlightenment in whichever way naturally suits them and it is common to see even the very young using neurochemicals or artificicial implants to augment their mental abilities
so yes to using nanites, no to being reserved to adults only
ps as for the Advent using nanotech and not just the Vasari only, consider that the TEC Hoshiko uses nanites as well so all races use nanites in their tech it is just that the Vasari have a far better grasp of it.
'At an early age, Advent children are taught to seek enlightenment in whichever way naturally suits them and it is common to see even the very young using neurochemicals or artificial implants to augument their mental abilities.' That's from the manual, so I'd assume that Advent children would be raised by a specialized group in the Unity's society. Also, I'd bet that due to their rigid caste system, that only members of each caste would be allowed to marry in their caste. For example, the Coalescense members can only marry those in the Coalescense. Silent Ones would likely have to marry with each-other, being completely ostracized by Advent society. So anyways, I'd think that actually child-raising would be done by special 'parenting' members of each caste. Of course, encouragement for improvement is a necessary part of this education. After all, anyone with special psionic powers would be a massive benefit to the Unity, regardless of the caste he or she was born into.
Also, I would like to discuss more about the actual Unity. What I'm thinking is that the Unity is actually part of their members; their minds and souls are literally melded with the other members of the Unity. Psitech obviously makes this easier for communication. However, some of the Unity do have individuality, most likely in the Coalescenses. They would be particularly valued for added ingenuity, and more adept at dealing with other civilizations. So as overall, the Unity is basically a collection of their peoples' minds and souls. If an Advent person was killed, their soul still exists in the Unity. As such, I'm thinking that in Unity society, the physical body is just a host, and is used only to further the Unity. This would explain the Progenitor Mothership's Ressurection ability; powerful psionics can mentally 'transfer' a soul and mind from one person to the next.
Finally, this is also the Unity's ultimate weakness. If people of the Unity lose connection, they lose their souls and their minds- everything that makes the person who they are. I'd think it'd either lead to instant physical death, or make the person a mindless shell wracked with madness.
I'm saying that they would only receive nanites at adulthood which is when they truly enter the unity. Children would still have IQ's in the range of 200 due to hard implants and drugs, but they would only become part of the unity at adulthood when the brain stops developing.
I agree with Swords for the most-part though... The Coalescences would likely be the only ones that retained individuality, but could tap into the vast net of knowledge at will of the entire race.
Also, this would explain the point of their culture beacons. Its not propaganda. It would instead act as a signal booster for the nanites, allowing them to communicate more efficiently over vast distances.
Although, separation from the Unity would cause none of the above. It would just revert the person back to how they would be without it. They would regain their individuality, unless of course someone else's mind had been imprinted on them. Take a look at the Advent game lost screen. Their eyes still glow and they are still alive, so thus they must live and keep their heads, just lose contact with the Unity.
hmmm... point with the nanites, just did not recognize the difference you expressed
possibly the hard implants allow for a nebulous contact with the unity to help with development and are absorbed with the implimentation of nanites to reduce any hardware complications
as for their cultural thing I like your point which is good for internal anti-propaganda but there is also consideration of the effect on others especially the Vasari which most likely have a different mind set that makes them immune. So there is still probably a regular form of propaganda that also runs through the system
Pretty much what I was thinking. The hard implants provide a kick-start grafting point for the nanites.
Yeah, I guess it would have to use normal propaganda too, though the beacon idea does explain why they are called Temples of Communion...
i understand were using the name nanites as a way to clearly equate all three races versions of the nanites to each other. But what would they be called when it comes to the Advent? surely all three races wouldnt come to the same name for these tools
Well, using combinations of latin words, I can come up with Vigorandis. From Vegrandis meaning small, and vigoratus meaning healer.
psionic enhancers? just a thought
i have no problems with the marry-into-same-caste idea, but for the children and the parenting caste members, how about this.
once children are born, to promote the Advent Unity, they are immediately separated from their parents. Even they do not know who their child is. Instead, special parenting units, low-power Advent or the "low" caste members would teach the children, as a group, collectively. I think that everything about a child's upbringing would stress the collectiveness and unity of the...well...Unity. Otherwise losing your free will when you enter the Unity (as I believe is what happens, i'll get into that in a minute) would be met with too much of a resistance by your subconscious. You need to be raised to want to be part of this.
And for the state of the average Advent in the Unity. I believe they give up individualism when becoming part of the Unity, but I don't believe that they just become a mindless body/drone. They still have personal thoughts and can go about personal actions, but their minds are open to anyone in the Unity. But strong-leveled Advent can learn to "close their mind" from the rest of the Unity. Not place a brick wall and say you can't enter, but to anyone who is BELOW that Advent's psionic level or whatever we're going to call it, they cannot read their mind or memories. This way the Coalesci can go about their plans with minimum resistance from the average Advent. And Advent who are captured can't give away any of their plans, because they don't know them.
And that brings me to what happens when an Advent dies, and the Ressurrection ability. When an Advent dies, their body dies, but their soul (or presence as the Advent also call it) lingers in your body for a while (few days, few hours?), and so the Ressurrection ability can happen. But after a while, if the soul is not transported to another host it too will wither away and die. That ties into the Ressurrection ability as well, as only recently destroyed cap ships can have their crews transfered. Now we have a reason.
They broadcast strong psionic waves? That way, they are a beacon to all Advent, and a mental damper on all non-Advent. Kind of like a psychic attack?
well they're not really used to heal for the Advent, mostly to boost psionic power. read above post.
Well, I still think of the unity more of as a collective than individuals, but ehh...
At any rate, the way in which you block someone can actually make sense...
Simply put, the farther away someone is, the harder it is to "read" them. Now, Coalesci would likely have on a power of ten greater nanite counts in their body than the normal Advent. A Coale looking 170 pounds would likely weigh around 400 due to being so densely packed with nanites.
Now, all these extra things would certainly make them masters of Psitech, but more importantly, it would allow them to block out others.
Its simply a question of numbers. Whoever has more nanites can lock-out the others around them, deactivating their abilities, or can just jam being read the old fashioned way by broadcasting random garbage to confuse listeners...
well let's not forget natural ability. the Coalesci wouldn't be Coalesci just because they are so powerful (though that's defininitely a major factor) but also because they are so adept at manipulating psionic flows.
So the requirements to become a Coalescence:
1. LARGE amount of PsiTech/psionic power
2. AMAZING ability at using PsiTech
and i like the weight thing, that makes sense.
and i just realized that the lore i put up here is the TEC lore, going to remedy that now.
Aren't 1 and 2 the same thing?
Well, that is something we have to discuss... How does one become a Coalescence?
no, they aren't the same thing.
you could have an enormous amount of psionic energy, but you were never taught HOW to use that power, and so you're worthless except for the smallest of tasks. You can be extremely adept at working psionic flows, but you might not have a lot of power to work WITH. Clear differences.
And that's a good question. i have to go out now, but i'll add my opinion when i get back.
Well, death is unlikely, but I'm still leaning towards some sort of insanity because of the Advent lose screen. The people in it almost look like they're in terrible pain and loss. And even if a person keeps their mind, they'll likely lose contact with every other voice. And such as drastic change could cause some sort of damage, I'd think.
