The reason i wanted to start this thread, is simple. I see alot of OT posts that elude to the individual factions culture and political views and motives. I felt it was about time, the community as a whole had a foundation to base its ideas off of when it came to SoaSE Vasari Lore. Not just abunch of rambling opinions, but something logical that could dismiss alot of the ludicrous ideas behind the Vasari and their behavior.
My personal belief, is that 10,000 yrs ago. The Vasari, which very well has been around conquering planets LONG before 10,000 yrs ago. Arent much for one on one contact with any other races. Long before their Exodus, they must of decided any land based attacks were illogical and too costly. By simply showing a reasonable amount of force (somekind of bombardment meant to only shock and awe the populace into the belief they were outgunned) from the safety of their ships. By doing this they could convince the "lesser races" to come under Vasari rule with little to no resistance. This meant little waste of resources when it came to races extremely inferior to their own. As well maximum production of any resources the planet might wield. With a whole planet of non Vasari slaves. This meant the Vasari as a whole was freed to continue their "beloved" conquest of the known galaxy.
While nothing is truly known about their History before 10,000 ago. An unfortunate result of being on the run for 10 millenia (have no clue what that would be called) The Vasari themselves may very well no longer have any solid history to go on. Only old and outdated logs that showed how powerful and mighty their race once was prior to the cataclysm that struck them at the beginning of their exodus. As well time honored traditions, that again, they may not truely know the meaning to but still continue to perform them out of fear of losing their heritage.
As Im not a developer, I cant really say much about what truely chased the Vasari from their Empire. What I can say is what logically it is not. It cant possibly be a virus of somesort. As any virus would be hard to spread from ship to ship with no actual physical or atmospheric interactions between ships. A big hint here is the recalling of the Dark Fleet to confront this unknown enemy. The entire Dark Fleet accept for one vessel disappeared entirely. This vessel returned heavily damaged (making it painfully obvious the enemy of somekind of humanoid species with ships and weapons) which rules out a virus.
Another idea may be that its a "space maddness" being that the Vasari for the most part aside from their homeworld resided in ships their entire lives (may not be entirely true) That a prolonged exposure to a lessened amount of gravity could cause some kindof pyschiatric issues is plausable. This "Space Maddened" Vasari may turn on their counterparts and attack without provocation. But again this logically couldnt be the answer. As the current generation of Vasari would have never made it to TEC held space. Theyve been on the run for 10,000 years and most likely the "space maddness" would have overtaken them long before they escaped their own Empire. As well another clue as to what this unknown enemy is not is the beacons left behind by the Vasari. Slowly going quiet, tells us that the enemy is of an intellegent design. And are either following the Vasari out of vengence or has a more logical reasoning to it. Following resources (very much like the Vasari would have) to continue its growth.
Now as to why the Vasari are now in a stalemate with the TEC and being smashed by the Advent.
Many people believe that the Vasari couldnt possibly stay the same over the course of 10,000 yrs even on the run. I agree, to a degree though. Take the real Human race for example. Many times throughout our existance, we have set our own selves back hundreds if not thousands of years. Simply cause we get arrogant or complacent. This may not be entirely true to the Vasari. But if they are of intellegent design, as they are intend to be. Then they have all the same shortcomings of a Human. Their emotions and stout belief in being supierior could very well be used against themselves. For the most part, the Vasari wouldnt be worried about great bounds and leaps in technology (aside from tech that could get them far far away from their pursuers) they were looking to start over. As well most technology would have been developed on land (trying to create a WMD onboard an Evacuator might not be the best of all ideas) which they wouldnt spend much time on. Being they had become used to life on a ship and they only wanted to stick around long enough to get their resources and haul ass.
When they fled from their Empire, their goal wasnt to fight whatever was after them. They surely believed there was nothing to do but run. Especially after their most prized fleet was lost to this unknown enemy. So instead of staying and dying like the rest, they fled. Which means they hoped they would be able to get away from what ever it is and reestablish themselves. They didnt want to fight this thing, The Vasari for all their Conquering had become fearful of anything that actually could hold its on in a fight with them. They were too used to the idea of swatting at other races like flies. Their arrogance and complacency was their undoing.
The Vasari while cocky and sometimes over enthralled with themselves, arent stupid and just by observing their technology shows their extreme levels of logic. They would have plotted a course for systems that were high in resources but most likely uninhabited. This would give them more time to gather the resources needed and take the fighting out of the equation. But conquering was in their blood so to speak. And werent foolish enough to allow their weapons to degrade or become nonfunctional. Especially if the unknown enemy was to catch up to them. Surely wether they liked it or not. They would have to fight it. And with the beacons going silent one by one. They knew this enemy was not going to stop until they were dead.
This is where the TEC come in. Humans are greedy, and money is on top of their lists of favorites. TO would have spanned out to as many systems rich in resources. Mostlikely ignoring the ones where more money would have been wasted then made. This set them on a collision course with the Vasari. The Vasari, wouldnt be looking for a fight. Their new objective is to gather and evade. And this would send them into systems where production of needed resources would have been higher. Totally ignoring the same systems the TO would have overlooked and eventually making contact with TO.
The Conquers in the Vasari would have immediately came out. Realizing they couldnt go around this new species. And actually be able to find sufficient amounts of metal and crystal needed to sustain their Exodus Fleet. They would have observed the TO before striking. Not making the same mistake they had 10,000 yrs prior they would have realized the TO was nothing more then a semi-peaceful economic civilization. And without actual battleships and frigates, the TO would be just another species to fall to the Vasari. As well this may very well boost the morale of the overall fleet, giving them the feeling that even 10,000 yrs on the run couldnt dull the Vasari's abilities to conquer. That surely played into the reasoning for the Vasari to play its cards and gamble it could conquer the TO before its pursuers could catch up.
But again the Overconfidence the Vasari had in themselves put them in a situation they couldnt just back out of. Once the fighting started their was no turning back. At first the Vasari swept the TO colonies with ease, but when actual Capital ships and actual cruisers and frigates confronted them. It quickly turned the tide. The Vasari have wasted too much effort and time in this war with the TEC. And backing off would leave them with no resources to get them back on the run.
And now with another highly developed race the Advent entering the picture. A race that is atleast 1000 yrs technologicly ahead of the TEC. As well their civilization is oriented towards war. The Vasari is now stuck in a three way war. And their pursuers are just on the horizon.
While the Devs may deny ever thinking of adding another race. Its quite obvious they did. The game itself talks about the Vasari's unknown enemy quickly catching up. Which means in a later expansion, this new race may be added.
But aside from my very long summary of the Vasari's motives and views in this game. Id like to hear from others as to what possibly could be a Out of touch Warrior race as the Vasari's culture and beliefs. I highly doubt they are religious, but it could answer the question of whats held them together for so long on the run. It might also answer why they feel so Superior to others and why they feel entitled to ruling all of known space. Please voice your opinions and please stick to the already written in stone lore of the games intro summaries of the three races. Id like this to stay logical and productive.
EDIT:
Vasari Summary from the Manuel
THE VASARI EMPIRE
The ancient Vasari Empire once ruled over countless worlds. Beginning at the galactic core, the empire expanded uniformily, and brought hundreds of alien races under its control. While most of the species the Vasari encountered were primitive and peacefully subjugated, more advanced civilizations were harshly enslaved. Once conquered, these species were integrated into Vasari society as "valued citizens," giving them minimal standing in the Empire. Each world was then locked down and ruled from vast orbital structures in order to minimize the chance of rebellion.
As with all empires, the Vasari civilization's fall began from within. Ten thousand years ago the inner worlds of the empire fell suddenly silent. Expecting nothing more than rebellion by the local species, a local wing of the Dark Fleet was sent to restore order, but no status reports were ever recieved. Soon three more planets fell silent off the communications grid, and while Internal Intelligence deliberated on the response of what could only be the work of traitors, several more worlds went dark - including the ancient Vasari homeworld.
The rate of expansion of this unknown enemy was astonishing, far exceeding even that of the entire Dark Fleet! As a last resort, the Dark Fleet Veerr brought the bulk of their forces back from the expansionary frontier for a blind assault on whatever was eating its way out of the empire's core worlds. When a single, heavily damaged warship from the Dark Fleet appeared out of phase space in orbit of a planet on the empire's perimeter, the inhabitants decided to board the ship. What they found were the remains of a once battle-hardened crew driven mad with fear.
In a rare act of autonomy, the colony made the decision to evacuate to a system far from the Empire. It would prove to be the last time they would ever see Vasari space. For the next 10,000 years the Vasari refugee fleet travelled from system to system, dropping warning beacons on their way, spending only enough time to replenish their resources before moving on. No matter how far the Vasari travel, their warning beacons fall silent; their unknown adversary continues its march toward their extermination.
SHIP TYPES
Jikara Navigator As the Vasari continue their long trek through space, it‘s the Jakaras that lead the way to safety. However, the Jakara is also used for quick strikes against unsuspecting mining installations and houses strike teams that can be deployed to capture enemy assets. Should it encounter enemy forces alone in unknown space, its unique Phasic Cloaking device can be used to either hide and observe enemy maneuvers or to avoid weapons fire, thereby giving it a high survivability without any support from the Exodus Fleet. Ravastra Skirmisher Ravastra Skirmisher‘s combine speed with power to create a deadly close-range combat vessel. Heavily armored, the Ravastra can withstand a great deal of punishment for its size but is still nearly as nimble as the Jikara. Its ability to withstand punishment is further enhanced once it enters its Reintegration repair cycle, where both engines and weapon systems are shut down in order to quickly regenerate its hull. Given its high speed, survivability and relatively low resource cost, the Ravastra was also determined to be the most suited to striking deep into the enemy‘s fleet during combat in order to activate interference devices that restrict the use of antimatter. Kanrak Assailant Equipped with a long-range torpedo launcher, the Kanrak has been designed to eliminate both stationary and mobile targets from a safe distance. Depending on the importance of the target and the overall tactical situation, Kanrak commanders may decide to channel power from the ship‘s engine system into its missile‘s warhead, granting the vessel increased weapons range and an area of effect attack at the expense of mobility. Karrastra Destructor While of only minimal use in ship-to-ship combat, the Karrastra‘s true purpose lies in planetary bombardment which it accomplishes with ease. Not many Karrastra‘s were present in the original Exodus Fleet and almost none were constructed until over a year into the war with the Traders. Previous engagements at scheduled resource acquisition drops required next to no siege capabilities and no future need was anticipated. Production rates have increased dramatically since. Junsurak Sentinel Equipped with fore and aft anti-strikecraft phase missile launchers, the Junsurak is deceptively adept at dealing with both enemy squadrons and vessels. Not only are its missiles effectively impossible to outmaneuver, but they can also be upgraded to use the same area of effect Charged Missile technology of the Kanrak Assailant, allowing the Junsurak to clear dense clouds of enemy strikecraft at the cost of mobility. Jarun Migrator As one of the largest frigates known to exist, the Jarun safely ferries civilians critical to the survival of the Vasari species and experienced xeno administrators between the stars. The Jarun is extremely vulnerable to enemy attack and must be carefully guarded. Lasurak Transporter Light fighter and bomber support for Vasari fleets is provided by the Lasurak Transporter. Capable of fielding one squadron, the Lasurak is capable of launching its forces deeper into an enemy‘s gravity well than one might think, thanks to its relatively strong shields and structure. Stilakus Subverter Stilakus Subverters are best used in combination with other ships making use of phase missile technology. While only lightly armed themselves, the Stilakus‘ are equipped with powerful phase manipulator fields that have a twofold effect: The first is a weakening of enemy shields, greatly lowering their shield mitigation and making them more easily bypassed by phase missiles; the other is the ability to create a distortion field within the gravity well. This field allows the Stilakus to perform an in-grav phase jump, teleporting it towards an enemy target before it channels a disabling field of energy. Serevun Overseer The Serevun Overseer is an advanced ship of the Vasari fleet, that earns its name for two reasons: by being able to detect incoming starships and by protecting the fleet. When enemy ships are detected, a Serevun may decide to activate its Jump Degradation technology to delay the incoming forces. To protect the fleet during combat, the Serevun can manufacture and deploy Reactive Nanite Armor which forms a hardened armor layer around the target, with the added benefit of improved structural integrity. Many Overseers have been intentionally left behind in the wake of the Exodus Fleet as another attempt to serve as an early warning system, and potential delaying mechanism for the unknown threat. There has yet to be any reports aside from those that were placed prior to entering Trader Space. Skarovas Enforcer As the most powerful direct combat ship in the Vasari Empire before reaching capital ships, the Skarovas is armed and armored for a fight. Utilizing twin heavy plasma wave cannons, this heavy cruiser is able to destroy many enemy vessels before needing to withdraw. Like its smaller cousin, the Ravastra Skirmisher, the Skarovas support Reintegration technology and inertial fields that slow nearby targets, allowing Skarovas to keep enemies in range of their dual plasma wave cannons. Kortul Devastator Like many ships in the Vasari fleet, the Kortul doubles as both a warship and a home for the remnants of the empire. As the lead assault class vessel, the Kortul has a number of defensive system that grant it impressive survivability in battle, which combined with a full complement of heavy weapons make it a force to be reckoned with. In the days of the Empire, Kortuls formed the backbone of every Wing of the Dark Fleet, and while the Exodus Fleet pales in comparison, the Kortuls perform much the same function with one exception: they no longer carry Variments of shock troopers. Skirantra Carrier Nanotechnology is put to use in some form in nearly every Vasari design, but few utilize it as pervasively as Skirantra Carriers. Through some of their subsystems may be obsolete by Vasari standards, that makes them no less feared by fledgling civilizations. Large banks of Matter Compilers allow Skirantras to generate many varieties of nanites at a staggering rate, granting them enormous flexibility in how best to support allied forces. Jarrasul Evacuator The Jarrasul Evacutor is the largest capital ship known to exist in the galaxy and is truly a city in space. The Vasari rarely established surface colonies on occupied worlds, preferring instead to rule from orbit in these floating cities. The Jarrasul has been modified greatly during the exodus to serve the needs of the fleet. Its giant frontal maw can rip apart planets from orbit, inspiring both terror and utter destruction against its enemies. Antorak Marauder Despite a technological advantage, the Vasari Exodus Fleet strongly favors guerilla warfare tactics to make the most of its relatively few starships. Quickly blitzing unwary targets already softened by sabotage is a cornerstone of this strategy. The Antorak is perfectly suited for assisting in such a strike, boasting abilities to both incapacitate the enemy and swiftly bring in reinforcements. Vulkoras Desolator Few ships in the galaxy can match the destructive potential of the Vulkoras. Both enemy forces and planets alike quickly fall before its banks of heavy phase missile launchers and deployable siege batteries. Such offensive power comes at a price, however—the Vulkoras relies on supporting ships to deal with specific threats like strikecraft more so than any other Vasari capital ship.

Karrastra Destructor
While of only minimal use in ship-to-ship combat, the Karrastra‘s true purpose lies in planetary bombardment which it accomplishes with ease.
Such offensive power comes at a price, however—the Vulkoras relies on supporting ships to deal with specific threats like strikecraft more so than any other Vasari capital ship.

Mmmm, chemistry.
Volt: So what you're saying, is that they either need a little machine to make our atmosphere heavier (provide a compressed air pocket) for them, or a little machine to spike the mix w/ some chemicals to make it enriched, right?
Weird question, we're operating on the assumption Vasari do have some means of drawing in atmosphere right (lungs)? A more passive system like gills doesn't seem very useful for anything that's land-based. If we're going with lungs, it's also perfectly plausible the Vasari have this membrane thing behind a valve or other protective surface of some sort.
If that doesn't make sense, just stick your head up your ass. The rectum is really good at absorbing things into the blood stream (mucous membrane) and it has a valve . Or maybe it could be something along the lines of little breathing holes... like what a grasshopper has; that could be handy because any devices could plug right into the holes.
Also... we're presuming the Vasari are carbon based life forms, right?
-Itharus
Well, I'm assuming that they have DNA and have cells, and thus are based on C, H, O, and N.
But no, we know for a fact that Vasari have a membrane according to the devs that absorbs nutrients and knocks out the needs for a digestive and for a respiratory system. This also explains why their chests are so small. No lungs and digestive system=a whole lot smaller body.
What I was saying was that they need a compressor. More than likely, the could breathe our air. If you compress oxygen, then it would actually be a more efficient way than yanking it away from carbon in CO2. They wouldn't need to spike it with anything unless there was some special chemical they need.
And besides, nothing we breathe is particularly harmful. There is oxygen which the Vasari need anyways, and then Nitrogen which is all but inert. Our atmosphere is harmless, but is just a little too thin for their taste.
I wonder what their immune system would be like, any bacteria that could survive the heat on planets they prefer would be pretty nasty if they were aggressive towards other lifeforms. Id bet the Vasari would have a very high immune system and using extreme strains of bacteria against the Vasari would fail miserably.
yes it would. the book were I got the info from (have to dig it out to look up the bibleography) mentioned that to avoid a violent decompression (which dropping suddenly from 1 atmo to nothing would cause severe problems) mentioned that keeping the air pressure at a certain low rate (cant remember the exact rate but you need to keep the oxygen at 99% to keep the amount of oxygen molecules at the same rate as what we currently breath at 1 atmo) would mitigate these problems of accidently cutting open your suit. And yes you would still need a suit to help with temparature differences (heat being as more severe problem the cold ironically enought) and protection from the more dangerous forms of electro-magnetic raditation.
immunity systems have to be trained in order to work properly. The results is that they would be severely sickened and die before their systems could take learn ( and the survivors would pass on the basic info to help the next gen. to survive better) or absolutely nothing would happen. And vice versa for us. To get even freakier results, start change the amino acids and sugars around in the basic DNA coding (such as right hand, left hand, we do only left hand). Theoreitically the results could become even messier.
@Ryat#1
Ahh.. Okay...
@Ryat#2/Allegiance:
Immune systems are trained as was said. Also, what we call extremophiles would be the Vasari's norm. They would be used to bacteria that can survive those sorts of things. They would likely be harmless to us unless they could survive at ambient temperatures. Then we'd be screwed... Something so unique would spread rapidly, although one saving grace would likely be that 99.99% of Vasari bacteria would be anaerobic due to the native atmospheres...
Vasari do genetic modification en masse... They don't terraform worlds, they change the population. They take normal humans (and I'm sure other species in other parts of space) and modify them to be able to withstand extreme heat, breathe toxic fumes, have layers of insulating blubber to withstand the cold, etc... Which really, when you think about it, is about as insulting as you can get to a species, to go inside of them and change their genetic makeup...
The Vasari also make widespread use of cloning (atleast, they certainly mass-clone the soldiers).
So... I don't think it's far fetched at all to think that the Vasari likely have amazing immune systems. For that matter, they have nano-medicine and nanobots, which means they can effectively fight just about anything that doesn't kill you instantly. Some of their tech even states that they live longer lives because of it, and that their nano-tech can essentially heal moderate wounds rapidly (the population resistance to orbital bombing, and the longevity tech).
So bioweapons? Probably out. I also doubt that the Vasari would be prone to using them, because: a.) nanobots alone can be applied more effectively as a plague than any natural pathogen, and b.) they want the populations alive - Vasari prefer to keep slaves over wiping species out.
On an unrelated note: what is the Drain Planet ability? Is that just a huge tractor beam stripping the surface off of the planet and sucking it into a big nanofurnace to be sorted and refined, or what?
Well, I'm not saying that they couldn't change the DNA of their own pathogens, but by default, the pathogens would be harmless to humans.
And bioweapons would be out as the Vasari would have to get them inside a ship first and firing a giant glob of nanites at your hull is a lot more devastating than dying of the black death a few weaks from now...
I'd say Drain Planet is more or less that. By modifying gravity, you can suck the atmosphere off a planet and sort it for your own use.
makes sense as well as if they were on the run for 10,000 years it be alot easier to jump to a planet. suck it dry from the atmosphere and get out of there without having to stop for years at a time everytime they need a resupply.
Here's the Vasari perspective of the History of the Spirits, which I'm calling the Legacy of Vashkin Voraskin.
Vashkin Voraskin is the equivalent of a Vasari folktale teller, so keep that in mind when reading this. It is about the same length as the History of the Spirits, and I hope more relevant to this thread. If you have problems with anything in the story, let me know, as long as it is not about the Egyptian ideas of the soul (Ba, Ka, Ib, Akh, and so on). Those will stay because I think the ancient Eyptians were the shit. But anything else feel free to comment on.
The Legacy of Vashkin Voraskin, Chapter OneMany stars have died since the birth of the Vasari, yet we remember it as clear as the skin of the Kortul. At first we were nothing, we were less than nothing. We had Ba, but we had no Ka, and so we were nothing. I know not how we passed from the great Ba of the Dark Thought, but suddenly we were there, we were on a planet. We could feel the enormity of it beneath our feet as we stood firm against its molten surface. Yet we were in wonder at our bodies, and in fear. We were still Ba, and we had yet to find our Ka. We were living without Ka, without our life force, which was impossible. A Ba can only exist in togetherness with its Ka; there is no other way. Then the Lights of the universe came to us, and suddenly we felt Ka burst within us. The Lights had given us life, and had brought us out of the Dark Thought. We lay flat along the ground now, prostrating ourselves in honor of these holiest of Powers. They laughed at us, and the sound of their laughing was like golden music to our ears. There was one Light, and it burned red in our eyes. It shone over us, and in that moment we grew. Not taller, but wiser. The eyes that had looked upon the Lights opened their eyes for the first time, and we realized we had been blind before. We thought we had heard the Lights' laughter, but for the first time music reached our ears. With that the Light gave off one more burst, and withdrew. The other Lights withdrew as well, leaving us in shadow. In Darkness. Then the Darkness wavered, it moved, it became a light like the other Lights, but different. It did not shine, instead it ate up the light around it. We were frightened, and clustered together. The Darkness slowly advanced, consuming us in its light that was not light. It passed over us, and we again changed. We did not open our eyes anew, yet we saw things differently. Our ears did not grow wider, yet we heard things we had not heard before. With that the Darkness also withdrew, and the light of our sun burned hot against our backs, and the heat of our planet returned, as it had been ice-cold inside the shadow. We looked at each other, and instead of laughing, we cried. Something was wrong, we thought to ourselves, something is not right. The Legacy of Vashkin Voraskin, Chapter TwoThere came a time not soon after our birth that all light was blotted out around us, and the four Lights descended from the sky. This time they had not come to greet us, they were charging us with a mission. The Darkness was gone, and it would not come back unless we let it. Faithful to the providers of our Ka we agreed, and the Lights promised us great books of prophecy and wisdom in exchange for cooperation for the rest of our lives and the lives of our children and the children of our children. We talked it over among us, and agreed. The women were hot-tempered, but the men calmed them down. And thus was the agreement written, and thus was the promise made. The Lights exploded around us, and from that light came worlds, whole planets for us to live on. And anchored to the shape of the planets was the prison the Darkness was confined to. We studied the space between the planets closely, as we were curious to see what could hold back such great Darkness that we felt on our First Day. We saw nothing, and we heard nothing. The powers the shadow and the red Light gave us were not great enough to see this. We slunk back to our planets, and waited.Trial soon came to us, as we were not alone in the universe. There were two other planets orbiting our sun that held life, and they were of two different species. Kelvar, one called themselves, and the other was Numvar. These two species warred against each other constantly, and it was from their fight that the Vasari learnt and developed the tools of war, to protect and defend the hidden prison of the dark shadow that consumed all light and was itself light. The Kelvar and the Numvar fought each other for many many years, until eventually there were not enough left on either side to power a starship. The two species retreated to their respective planets, yet the Vasari did not breathe easy. Now, the voice whispered in their heads, now was the time to strike against both species and dominate them. Yet the Vasari had their prison to guard, and their promise to fulfill. They would not leave the pentagon sector to destroy the lives of other species, at least not yet.The Legacy of Vashkin Voraskin, Chapter ThreeThe time came when the Lights descended on us again, and out of that brilliance came three large books. They were like no books we had ever seen, and I talk not about size. There are no words to describe the sight of these books. Taller than life they were, yet smaller than the knuckle on my finger. It was with these great books that the Vasari became the Vasari. The first book, called the Tome of the Warrior, was given to us by the Light that smelled of earth and growing things. From it we learned how to fight with feet and arm, with laser and gun. From that book we learned how to fight, and to win. The next book, the Prophecies of Reunion, came to us from the Light that seemed almost transparent, so that you did not know if it was in one place or all places. From this book we learned how to create in sizes smaller than size the Ib, the seat of will and intentions, of a person, and using this we could take another's Ba and change it to our own. From this we learned the impossible, from this, the greatest of all the books, we learned how we would survive. The third book, the Prophecies of Darkness, warned us in great detail of the consequences of freeing the shadow that resided in the center of our worlds. From this we learned fear and caution that kept us alive. As the three Lights withdrew, the fourth came down to us, but we were frightened. It came down in fiery red rage, and the ground melted beneath our feet. Frozen, we were presented our fourth book, the Downfall of the Empire. This served us no purpose. In the seconds in which the first page was opened, nineteen of us raked out our eyes. By the second page, fifty of us were dead by our own hands. We never opened to the third page. There was a time when great evil came upon the worlds of the universe, and the Vasari were there to watch it happen. As with all turnings of the moon, the night when the moon hid itself from our eyes we turned our sights upward and gazed upon the Lights as they danced their dance across the universe, helping, creating, and guiding. Yet even as we watched on that fateful night, the Lights paused. They seemed to shiver. And from the Lights came forth smaller lights, sparks of the great Lights, yet the Vasari were not happy. They could see with eyes of the red Light and unhidden by the shadow of the Great Darkness, and they could hear with ears of the red Light and uncovered by the shadow of the Great Darkness, and they knew these sparks were not good creations. And soon our predictions came true. The sparks spasmed across the universe, unlike the grateful dance of the Lights as they made their way across the sky. The Vasari, unable to watch the spasms, withdrew their gaze from the heavens and looked no more at the Light's enchanting grace. So it was that the sparks blew more sparks over all the species of the universe, and the Vasari wept and their tears mingled with the tears of the Lights, for the universe would never again be whole. The Legacy of Vashkin Voraskin, Chapter FourIn this great time of trouble, the Vasari toiled mercilessly, and forbade any species from entering the pentagon. Many fought futilely against the Vasari, and they were destroyed by the teachings of the Tome of the Warrior. Yet we expanded not from our borders in the pentagon worlds, for we had a prison to guard. And during this time the Lights came upon us, yet they were flickering about and would not hold still, and to our great surprise and horror we realized the Lights were frightened and unsure of themselves. They asked us for help with their problems. They asked us! Needless to say, the Vasari were astounded by the revelations spreading through us. Yet we noticed there were only three Lights, and that the red Light that had blessed us so many years ago was not there. We asked the Lights the location of the red Light, and suddenly in a great flurry the Lights had gone, leaving behind a mournful wail that slowly dwindled to nonexistence. When the Lights next returned, they had terrible news to tell us. The red Light had sunk into the Dark Thought, and it was the Lights' own forgetfulness to blame. At that time we wept with them, but our minds were churning. The Lights were not perfect. The Lights made mistakes. The Lights could be beaten. But we pushed those thoughts immediately from our heads. They were evil thoughts, and best not paid much attention to. So we told the Lights that they could solve their problem by drowning in a great flood all those who needed saving. They conferred among themselves for a time, and agreed. Suddenly among the Lights there was a new Light, a bluish essence that seemed fuzzy around its edges, and inside bubbles seemed to rise and burst eternally. The Lights disappeared, and from our ships we watched whole worlds destroyed. This is what the Lights really are, we said to ourselves as billions of species were wiped into extinction, this is their Ib. Maybe the shadow was right, we thought to ourselves, maybe the shadow was right.Little did we know that the shadow had already ensnared our minds. The Legacy of Vashkin Voraskin, Chapter FiveMuch time passed, and the universe changed. From where once had been only empty space, whole worlds of ice had appeared, and new breeds of creatures as well. Yet our neighbors of old, the Kelvar and Numvar, increased their attacks on us as their curiosity and fury grew. We held them back, but they were steadily gaining ground. Frantically we sent out a plea to the Lights, and they came to us. We asked them for a way to travel through space better, so we could strike faster and more heavily on the Kelvar and Numvar fleets. The Lights were troubled by it, but they gave us the secret to phase space. Now we know you, we thought to ourselves as the Lights left. You make us promise to help you, but you are unwilling to help us even if it is for the task you had set upon us. From this discovery of phase space we created much phase technology, but that we hid from the Lights, and they never found it.There came a day when the Lights came to us and told us they were departing from the universe for a time. That evening we felt the Lights leave the universe.By dawn our fleets were descending on the Kelvar and Numvar worlds. We took them by surprise, and by dawn of the next day our storm troopers had secured the major cities on both planets. The Kelvar and Numvar subjugated or destroyed, we turned our eyes on our nearest solar systems. With the departure of the Lights came the enstranglement of the shadow. We knew our destiny now. It was not to guard some invisible prison that none could discover, least of all enter. No, our true destiny was to establish such an empire that would last for a thousand generations, one that could never be destroyed by the Lights! The Vasari women stayed on Vasar, refusing to fight. That was fine with us men, we came to Vasar only to pollinate the females, and the females remained on Vasar, providing children for our empire. It was a beautiful relationship. Within a month the next two star systems were ours. Now we began solidifying what we had conquered, creating orbital structures to watch over the colonies of the pitiful survivors of the planets we now controlled. We established a hierarchy so as to make our armies more orderly. Yet even that was not perfect. As the Supreme Commander of our armies was assassinated over and over again by those who wanted the position for themselves, our enemies took our confusion for their own advantage and prepared a serious resistance to our advance. Normally we would have wiped them out to less than a single ship, but we were unprepared and bickering among ourselves, and our fleets suffered great losses as combined Ingbit and Uselage forces, two other species on the Vasari frontier, struck deep into our perimeter in several locations. They caught a dead asteroid we had never paid much attention to, and in that one fell swoop they cut the pentagon worlds off from the rest of the fledgling empire. As the highest officers of our armies were currently in the pentagon sector vying, and sometimes killing, for the Supreme Commander position, our leaders were cut off from us. Scattered and with no support or intel, the Ingbit and Uselage wiped out our major fortifications, confining the Vasari to the surface of their planets! To us, this was intolerable. To be confined to a planet just like those we conquered! Yet we could not communicate with the forces in the pentagon sector, and we could not construct orbiting factories to build our ships from the ground, and so we were stuck. Trapped on the very planets we conquered. We stayed there for many passings of the moon. The Legacy of Vashkin Voraskin, Chapter SixWe managed to send out nanites into the near atmosphere to spy on the Ingbit forces currently circling our planet. They switched with Uselage forces every other week. We can watch them and their ships circle our planet endlessly, but when we try to send the nanites into phase space they are quickly shot down. The Ingbit and Uselage know not where the nanites are going, they have never seen phase space. But they will not let anything leave the gravity well. Yet one day our forefathers, the fathers and gods of the Vasari who have replaced the Lights in our culture, must have been smiling over us that day, as that day we were saved. As we watched the Ingbit ships, red blaring alarms began sounding in every command center. The Ingbit were in total confusion. We snuck a clump of nanites through one of the ships' hulls and saw what was happening. The computers were reporting a massive force phasing in towards the planet, yet it was not from either of the two phase lanes jutting from the planet. Though the Ingbit and Uselage could not themselves traverse phase space, not yet, they knew the paths we took that cut through normal space, and they knew how to recognize it. Yet what the computers were showing made no sense, not even to us. How could ships be traversing phase space when there were no phase lanes? Phase space was not like normal space, it did not exist everywhere where planets did not. There were only narrow corridors in the universe that was phase space: the phase lanes. So these ships were doing the impossible, or the computers were malfunctioning. Either way, our hearts soared. Something was happening, we thought, something will change. Only half an hour later three massive Vasari fleets phased into the gravity well! The Ingbit as well as us were frozen in shock. Even those of us manipulating the nanites stopped total surprise. An unthinkable offense, if any of us had cared to put them on trial.Needless to say, the Ingbit lasted only minutes. When transport ships were sent down to the planet to collect the Vasari, how was on the lips of every one of us. But the transport ships were unmanned, as all are, and piloted by remote nanites except in the most extreme circumstances, and so our question could not be answered. It was my transport ship that first reached the Vasari capitals. We were piloted into the flagship's hangar bay, and there we were met by the commander, none other than the Supreme Commander himself! When we performed the necessary rituals and saluted to him by touching our forefinger to forehead, he laughed and said there was no longer a Supreme Commander."We are an empire," he said to us, "an empire of starships, and we will reflect that. From now on I am known as the Fleet Admiral Commander."Of course we then reperformed the rituals, changing Supreme Commander to Fleet Admiral Commander. Only then did he tell us what we were dying to know."It is called the Kostura Cannon," he said with an evil grin that sent delight spiraling up our bodies, "and it contains the power to create a sort of phase node, a beacon to which we can travel, if we have a phase node at our location."We asked if there was such a beacon in the pentagon worlds. The Fleet Admiral Commander grinned again. "There is now. We discovered some lost technologies floating around from the Lights' purge of the universe. We can recreate them. They stabilize phase space around our planet, allowing a connection, or temporary phase lane, between that planet and another such beacon. Finally we can create phase lanes, or at least phase beacons. We will begin construction of a phase stabilizer in this gravity well immediately. Never shall what has happened here happen again. Welcome to the Empire, Vasari."With that, the new Fleet Admiral Commander turned and walked out of the hangar. The Legacy of Vashkin Voraskin, Chapter SevenDuring the next hundred years, we conquered many star systems and created in truth the Vasari Empire that had taken root in our heads. This period of time was called the Revenge of the Righteous, as we well know. Our Vasari Empire colonized thousands of worlds, and our borders kept on expanding. Then the Lights returned to the universe. We felt them return, light spilling out across the dark emptiness of space, and we felt fear. Our fleets slowed down, stopped, and turned around. Our leaders congregated on Vasari with the females, deliberating on what to do. The Lights met them there, or at least, they arrived on Vasar. Our leaders and our women hid from the Lights, and would not talk with them. The Spirits in their wrath destroyed our four holy temples and from within their shrines removed the four ancient prophecies that they had given us so long ago. Our men were furious, and immediately our fleets relaunched, and expanded even more aggressively. Our women, however, were more devious, and being women, hid their anger until it was all that fed them, and they devised their plot against the Lights. For a whole year they built nanites, trillions and trillions of them, until the day when they sent them loose to create a planet in the center of the pentagon worlds. They called that artificial planet Kron, and they built a research station around it. All the women moved to Kron, and a select few were chosen to inhabitate the research station. They allowed no men on or around the planet, and would not speak of what they were experimenting inside the station. Angry at the Lights and now at our women, every single male Vasari launched into space, even those still too young to operate a simple control panel. We left the women alone on Kron, and set about solidifying our Empire. Then came the Incident. We knew only this. One minute, we were traversing the stars, intent on defying the Lights and turning our backs on our women. The next, we were keeling over on the floors of our starships, screaming in a way no Vasari has ever screamed before. We the Vasari, in tune as we are with the homeostasis of the universe, felt the shadow flow back into the universe, and knew now what our women had done. Frantically we assembled the Dark Fleet all in one place and sent it back to the pentagon worlds to combat the shadow and force it back into its prison. From the few ships being constructed on Vasar, we watched as the shadow destroyed our planet and belched chunks of what remained of the planet out into the depths of space. Our home planet was no more, and our women were no more.Yet still we traveled on, and one by one we felt the Lights dim as they fled the universe in the wake of the shadow.Yet still we traveled on, until finally we came upon the shadow and we fired all of our weapons at it, hoping that somehow we could stop it. We failed. In one moment, the Vasari fought valiantly against the shadow. In the next moment, the Darkness consumed them.We felt our Ba disintegrate within us, and we went insane. Those of us who did not become Akh stood frozen, empty shells that the Darkness eagerly devoured. And the Vasari Empire was no more.
Nice.. I like this one a lot more than the last one
If you notice, I added Vasari women
but they were all on Kron so they all died. Bummer.
So, the question is, did they make more, or did they just start mass cloning?
My belief is mass cloning. they were a bit miffed with the women by the end, so they started cloning, and then they just decided to keep doing it as there was no need for women anymore, since their primary use in Vasari culture was for breeding anyway.
Somehow I don't think the Vasari would have ever had females... I always sort of thought they reproduced asexually... probably consciously directing which traits to pass on to their young in the process somehow. Which could explain why cloning is such a successful tactic for them.
It could also highly reinforce their apparently feudal nature... especially if they could choose to generate offspring that had certain traits, ie: docile servants, fighters, sterile drone types, etc. Vasari veritably scream "directed reproduction" - hell, it's even one of their technology tree names.
The concept of Vasari females just doesn't seem to click in my brain somehow. Or if there are females, maybe they are few and far between, and primarily serve as breeders... maybe they have some importance along blood or "house" lines, or something... perhaps they are even revered as the source of Vasari families (clarification: revered for the ability to do what's mentioned in paragraph 2), and they serve as the foundation of the different sects within the Vasari empire (Slave Karr Magistrate, Jinsura Nomads, or any of the other little empire names given), by being the source that differentiates Vasari subspecies or something.
well they probably started out with male and females but with harsh conditions on their planet and space travel they would have evolved towards Asexuality as cloning would have made females obselete. I whole heartedly believe not all Vasari clone themselves but decide to reproduce as on a basic instinctual level some would still have the drive to reproduce.
I'm with Allegiance here.. I believe that while they could use nanites to create an army in an hour, some would still reproduce naturally due to its being hard-wired into their brain.
So then, Vasari reproduction? How do they do it like they do on the discovery channel? Eggs? Live births? Litters or singles? They aren't mammals so there aren't going to be any Vasari teets going around... are they bug like? Reptile like? What's the closest classification we have to compare Vasari to?
probably insect... Their bodies are rigid, so that rules out pregnancies.. It looks like they would have individual eggs, but that's just me...
i was just thinking the same thing. but they would probably lay between 5-10 eggs with a natural 30% fail rate, but with nanites they could probably drop that percentage down to less then 1%.
Look at cockroaches they pretty much extend their bodies to create a sack to hold their eggs. Infact many insects........if thats what were going to compare the Vasari to produced some kindof sack that is not a natural part of them prior to insemination.
Well like how we said earlier in this thread, women used to be part of the Vasari Empire but they are now extinct, making the Vasari 100% male. Just wanted to restate that.
And I think the egg idea is the most plausible.
Well, they could have just made more... If the human race had mastered genetic manipulation and every woman suddenly died, it wouldn't be long before we decided to make more... Its this wonderful emotion called loneliness...
However, having rigid insectoid bodies, and thus exoskeletons does bring up something else though... Their anatomy... What organs do they have?
Obviously a brain, excretory system, heart, and the membrane, but what else?
If they are based on insects, I'd bet the Vasari have an open circulatory system and may lack nerves. I bet a lack of nerves would greatly improve the Vasari warrior culture. After all, a lack of pain would result in more determined warriors. Imagine stabbing a Vasari and if it doesn't die, there's little flinching! It would be pretty frightening to fight a foe that cannot feel pain.
at the same time lack of nerves brings risk of dying because the extent of internal injuries is unknown unless the individual gets checked out. Id say because they are a highly evolved form of Insect they would have nerves, but not with the extent of ours. Their pain threshold would be very high and at times deathblows to a human wouldnt phase a Vasari Warrior.
