The reason i wanted to start this thread, is simple. I see alot of OT posts that elude to the individual factions culture and political views and motives. I felt it was about time, the community as a whole had a foundation to base its ideas off of when it came to SoaSE Vasari Lore. Not just abunch of rambling opinions, but something logical that could dismiss alot of the ludicrous ideas behind the Vasari and their behavior.
My personal belief, is that 10,000 yrs ago. The Vasari, which very well has been around conquering planets LONG before 10,000 yrs ago. Arent much for one on one contact with any other races. Long before their Exodus, they must of decided any land based attacks were illogical and too costly. By simply showing a reasonable amount of force (somekind of bombardment meant to only shock and awe the populace into the belief they were outgunned) from the safety of their ships. By doing this they could convince the "lesser races" to come under Vasari rule with little to no resistance. This meant little waste of resources when it came to races extremely inferior to their own. As well maximum production of any resources the planet might wield. With a whole planet of non Vasari slaves. This meant the Vasari as a whole was freed to continue their "beloved" conquest of the known galaxy.
While nothing is truly known about their History before 10,000 ago. An unfortunate result of being on the run for 10 millenia (have no clue what that would be called) The Vasari themselves may very well no longer have any solid history to go on. Only old and outdated logs that showed how powerful and mighty their race once was prior to the cataclysm that struck them at the beginning of their exodus. As well time honored traditions, that again, they may not truely know the meaning to but still continue to perform them out of fear of losing their heritage.
As Im not a developer, I cant really say much about what truely chased the Vasari from their Empire. What I can say is what logically it is not. It cant possibly be a virus of somesort. As any virus would be hard to spread from ship to ship with no actual physical or atmospheric interactions between ships. A big hint here is the recalling of the Dark Fleet to confront this unknown enemy. The entire Dark Fleet accept for one vessel disappeared entirely. This vessel returned heavily damaged (making it painfully obvious the enemy of somekind of humanoid species with ships and weapons) which rules out a virus.
Another idea may be that its a "space maddness" being that the Vasari for the most part aside from their homeworld resided in ships their entire lives (may not be entirely true) That a prolonged exposure to a lessened amount of gravity could cause some kindof pyschiatric issues is plausable. This "Space Maddened" Vasari may turn on their counterparts and attack without provocation. But again this logically couldnt be the answer. As the current generation of Vasari would have never made it to TEC held space. Theyve been on the run for 10,000 years and most likely the "space maddness" would have overtaken them long before they escaped their own Empire. As well another clue as to what this unknown enemy is not is the beacons left behind by the Vasari. Slowly going quiet, tells us that the enemy is of an intellegent design. And are either following the Vasari out of vengence or has a more logical reasoning to it. Following resources (very much like the Vasari would have) to continue its growth.
Now as to why the Vasari are now in a stalemate with the TEC and being smashed by the Advent.
Many people believe that the Vasari couldnt possibly stay the same over the course of 10,000 yrs even on the run. I agree, to a degree though. Take the real Human race for example. Many times throughout our existance, we have set our own selves back hundreds if not thousands of years. Simply cause we get arrogant or complacent. This may not be entirely true to the Vasari. But if they are of intellegent design, as they are intend to be. Then they have all the same shortcomings of a Human. Their emotions and stout belief in being supierior could very well be used against themselves. For the most part, the Vasari wouldnt be worried about great bounds and leaps in technology (aside from tech that could get them far far away from their pursuers) they were looking to start over. As well most technology would have been developed on land (trying to create a WMD onboard an Evacuator might not be the best of all ideas) which they wouldnt spend much time on. Being they had become used to life on a ship and they only wanted to stick around long enough to get their resources and haul ass.
When they fled from their Empire, their goal wasnt to fight whatever was after them. They surely believed there was nothing to do but run. Especially after their most prized fleet was lost to this unknown enemy. So instead of staying and dying like the rest, they fled. Which means they hoped they would be able to get away from what ever it is and reestablish themselves. They didnt want to fight this thing, The Vasari for all their Conquering had become fearful of anything that actually could hold its on in a fight with them. They were too used to the idea of swatting at other races like flies. Their arrogance and complacency was their undoing.
The Vasari while cocky and sometimes over enthralled with themselves, arent stupid and just by observing their technology shows their extreme levels of logic. They would have plotted a course for systems that were high in resources but most likely uninhabited. This would give them more time to gather the resources needed and take the fighting out of the equation. But conquering was in their blood so to speak. And werent foolish enough to allow their weapons to degrade or become nonfunctional. Especially if the unknown enemy was to catch up to them. Surely wether they liked it or not. They would have to fight it. And with the beacons going silent one by one. They knew this enemy was not going to stop until they were dead.
This is where the TEC come in. Humans are greedy, and money is on top of their lists of favorites. TO would have spanned out to as many systems rich in resources. Mostlikely ignoring the ones where more money would have been wasted then made. This set them on a collision course with the Vasari. The Vasari, wouldnt be looking for a fight. Their new objective is to gather and evade. And this would send them into systems where production of needed resources would have been higher. Totally ignoring the same systems the TO would have overlooked and eventually making contact with TO.
The Conquers in the Vasari would have immediately came out. Realizing they couldnt go around this new species. And actually be able to find sufficient amounts of metal and crystal needed to sustain their Exodus Fleet. They would have observed the TO before striking. Not making the same mistake they had 10,000 yrs prior they would have realized the TO was nothing more then a semi-peaceful economic civilization. And without actual battleships and frigates, the TO would be just another species to fall to the Vasari. As well this may very well boost the morale of the overall fleet, giving them the feeling that even 10,000 yrs on the run couldnt dull the Vasari's abilities to conquer. That surely played into the reasoning for the Vasari to play its cards and gamble it could conquer the TO before its pursuers could catch up.
But again the Overconfidence the Vasari had in themselves put them in a situation they couldnt just back out of. Once the fighting started their was no turning back. At first the Vasari swept the TO colonies with ease, but when actual Capital ships and actual cruisers and frigates confronted them. It quickly turned the tide. The Vasari have wasted too much effort and time in this war with the TEC. And backing off would leave them with no resources to get them back on the run.
And now with another highly developed race the Advent entering the picture. A race that is atleast 1000 yrs technologicly ahead of the TEC. As well their civilization is oriented towards war. The Vasari is now stuck in a three way war. And their pursuers are just on the horizon.
While the Devs may deny ever thinking of adding another race. Its quite obvious they did. The game itself talks about the Vasari's unknown enemy quickly catching up. Which means in a later expansion, this new race may be added.
But aside from my very long summary of the Vasari's motives and views in this game. Id like to hear from others as to what possibly could be a Out of touch Warrior race as the Vasari's culture and beliefs. I highly doubt they are religious, but it could answer the question of whats held them together for so long on the run. It might also answer why they feel so Superior to others and why they feel entitled to ruling all of known space. Please voice your opinions and please stick to the already written in stone lore of the games intro summaries of the three races. Id like this to stay logical and productive.
EDIT:
Vasari Summary from the Manuel
THE VASARI EMPIRE
The ancient Vasari Empire once ruled over countless worlds. Beginning at the galactic core, the empire expanded uniformily, and brought hundreds of alien races under its control. While most of the species the Vasari encountered were primitive and peacefully subjugated, more advanced civilizations were harshly enslaved. Once conquered, these species were integrated into Vasari society as "valued citizens," giving them minimal standing in the Empire. Each world was then locked down and ruled from vast orbital structures in order to minimize the chance of rebellion.
As with all empires, the Vasari civilization's fall began from within. Ten thousand years ago the inner worlds of the empire fell suddenly silent. Expecting nothing more than rebellion by the local species, a local wing of the Dark Fleet was sent to restore order, but no status reports were ever recieved. Soon three more planets fell silent off the communications grid, and while Internal Intelligence deliberated on the response of what could only be the work of traitors, several more worlds went dark - including the ancient Vasari homeworld.
The rate of expansion of this unknown enemy was astonishing, far exceeding even that of the entire Dark Fleet! As a last resort, the Dark Fleet Veerr brought the bulk of their forces back from the expansionary frontier for a blind assault on whatever was eating its way out of the empire's core worlds. When a single, heavily damaged warship from the Dark Fleet appeared out of phase space in orbit of a planet on the empire's perimeter, the inhabitants decided to board the ship. What they found were the remains of a once battle-hardened crew driven mad with fear.
In a rare act of autonomy, the colony made the decision to evacuate to a system far from the Empire. It would prove to be the last time they would ever see Vasari space. For the next 10,000 years the Vasari refugee fleet travelled from system to system, dropping warning beacons on their way, spending only enough time to replenish their resources before moving on. No matter how far the Vasari travel, their warning beacons fall silent; their unknown adversary continues its march toward their extermination.
SHIP TYPES
Jikara Navigator As the Vasari continue their long trek through space, it‘s the Jakaras that lead the way to safety. However, the Jakara is also used for quick strikes against unsuspecting mining installations and houses strike teams that can be deployed to capture enemy assets. Should it encounter enemy forces alone in unknown space, its unique Phasic Cloaking device can be used to either hide and observe enemy maneuvers or to avoid weapons fire, thereby giving it a high survivability without any support from the Exodus Fleet. Ravastra Skirmisher Ravastra Skirmisher‘s combine speed with power to create a deadly close-range combat vessel. Heavily armored, the Ravastra can withstand a great deal of punishment for its size but is still nearly as nimble as the Jikara. Its ability to withstand punishment is further enhanced once it enters its Reintegration repair cycle, where both engines and weapon systems are shut down in order to quickly regenerate its hull. Given its high speed, survivability and relatively low resource cost, the Ravastra was also determined to be the most suited to striking deep into the enemy‘s fleet during combat in order to activate interference devices that restrict the use of antimatter. Kanrak Assailant Equipped with a long-range torpedo launcher, the Kanrak has been designed to eliminate both stationary and mobile targets from a safe distance. Depending on the importance of the target and the overall tactical situation, Kanrak commanders may decide to channel power from the ship‘s engine system into its missile‘s warhead, granting the vessel increased weapons range and an area of effect attack at the expense of mobility. Karrastra Destructor While of only minimal use in ship-to-ship combat, the Karrastra‘s true purpose lies in planetary bombardment which it accomplishes with ease. Not many Karrastra‘s were present in the original Exodus Fleet and almost none were constructed until over a year into the war with the Traders. Previous engagements at scheduled resource acquisition drops required next to no siege capabilities and no future need was anticipated. Production rates have increased dramatically since. Junsurak Sentinel Equipped with fore and aft anti-strikecraft phase missile launchers, the Junsurak is deceptively adept at dealing with both enemy squadrons and vessels. Not only are its missiles effectively impossible to outmaneuver, but they can also be upgraded to use the same area of effect Charged Missile technology of the Kanrak Assailant, allowing the Junsurak to clear dense clouds of enemy strikecraft at the cost of mobility. Jarun Migrator As one of the largest frigates known to exist, the Jarun safely ferries civilians critical to the survival of the Vasari species and experienced xeno administrators between the stars. The Jarun is extremely vulnerable to enemy attack and must be carefully guarded. Lasurak Transporter Light fighter and bomber support for Vasari fleets is provided by the Lasurak Transporter. Capable of fielding one squadron, the Lasurak is capable of launching its forces deeper into an enemy‘s gravity well than one might think, thanks to its relatively strong shields and structure. Stilakus Subverter Stilakus Subverters are best used in combination with other ships making use of phase missile technology. While only lightly armed themselves, the Stilakus‘ are equipped with powerful phase manipulator fields that have a twofold effect: The first is a weakening of enemy shields, greatly lowering their shield mitigation and making them more easily bypassed by phase missiles; the other is the ability to create a distortion field within the gravity well. This field allows the Stilakus to perform an in-grav phase jump, teleporting it towards an enemy target before it channels a disabling field of energy. Serevun Overseer The Serevun Overseer is an advanced ship of the Vasari fleet, that earns its name for two reasons: by being able to detect incoming starships and by protecting the fleet. When enemy ships are detected, a Serevun may decide to activate its Jump Degradation technology to delay the incoming forces. To protect the fleet during combat, the Serevun can manufacture and deploy Reactive Nanite Armor which forms a hardened armor layer around the target, with the added benefit of improved structural integrity. Many Overseers have been intentionally left behind in the wake of the Exodus Fleet as another attempt to serve as an early warning system, and potential delaying mechanism for the unknown threat. There has yet to be any reports aside from those that were placed prior to entering Trader Space. Skarovas Enforcer As the most powerful direct combat ship in the Vasari Empire before reaching capital ships, the Skarovas is armed and armored for a fight. Utilizing twin heavy plasma wave cannons, this heavy cruiser is able to destroy many enemy vessels before needing to withdraw. Like its smaller cousin, the Ravastra Skirmisher, the Skarovas support Reintegration technology and inertial fields that slow nearby targets, allowing Skarovas to keep enemies in range of their dual plasma wave cannons. Kortul Devastator Like many ships in the Vasari fleet, the Kortul doubles as both a warship and a home for the remnants of the empire. As the lead assault class vessel, the Kortul has a number of defensive system that grant it impressive survivability in battle, which combined with a full complement of heavy weapons make it a force to be reckoned with. In the days of the Empire, Kortuls formed the backbone of every Wing of the Dark Fleet, and while the Exodus Fleet pales in comparison, the Kortuls perform much the same function with one exception: they no longer carry Variments of shock troopers. Skirantra Carrier Nanotechnology is put to use in some form in nearly every Vasari design, but few utilize it as pervasively as Skirantra Carriers. Through some of their subsystems may be obsolete by Vasari standards, that makes them no less feared by fledgling civilizations. Large banks of Matter Compilers allow Skirantras to generate many varieties of nanites at a staggering rate, granting them enormous flexibility in how best to support allied forces. Jarrasul Evacuator The Jarrasul Evacutor is the largest capital ship known to exist in the galaxy and is truly a city in space. The Vasari rarely established surface colonies on occupied worlds, preferring instead to rule from orbit in these floating cities. The Jarrasul has been modified greatly during the exodus to serve the needs of the fleet. Its giant frontal maw can rip apart planets from orbit, inspiring both terror and utter destruction against its enemies. Antorak Marauder Despite a technological advantage, the Vasari Exodus Fleet strongly favors guerilla warfare tactics to make the most of its relatively few starships. Quickly blitzing unwary targets already softened by sabotage is a cornerstone of this strategy. The Antorak is perfectly suited for assisting in such a strike, boasting abilities to both incapacitate the enemy and swiftly bring in reinforcements. Vulkoras Desolator Few ships in the galaxy can match the destructive potential of the Vulkoras. Both enemy forces and planets alike quickly fall before its banks of heavy phase missile launchers and deployable siege batteries. Such offensive power comes at a price, however—the Vulkoras relies on supporting ships to deal with specific threats like strikecraft more so than any other Vasari capital ship.

Karrastra Destructor
While of only minimal use in ship-to-ship combat, the Karrastra‘s true purpose lies in planetary bombardment which it accomplishes with ease.
Such offensive power comes at a price, however—the Vulkoras relies on supporting ships to deal with specific threats like strikecraft more so than any other Vasari capital ship.

Well, I was thinking that the Council would set up the most basic laws and judge those who defy them. Perhaps these laws would be the very things that kept the Exodus Fleet together...
I still want them to be Admirals elected by their respective fleets.
As for the lower courts, we could call these Iudi (from the latin iudex, meaning judge; just as omnipitor is from the latin omnipotent, meaning all-powerful) and they would deal with lower crimes. The Iudi Council would be a coalition of all Iudi within a fleet.
The Iudi Council would be a medium level court with multiple judges. These would judge some crimes of murder and most accounts of treason.
Individual Iudi would run smaller courts and there would be one Iudi located on each capital ship to deal with criminals on that ship and the frigates around it. Iudi would be chosen by the High Council member governing that fleet. The position of Iudi is also a life term. Unless you resign or are impeached, you remain in power. Iudi are also responsible for all crimes below murder with the exception of fines incurred due to petty crimes.
So, what do you think?
I like it, with the exception of the name. I like the latin roots, those are nice, but Iudi just sounds too Advent for me. Every time I read the word an Advent council popped up. Maybe that can be the name of the Advent judicial system? Idk, but all I got a problem with is the name. The rest of its great
I've been pronouncing it I-yu-dai, but that's just me.. I don't know, sounds more Vasari-ish than what it looks like... Besides, none of the latin equivalents of judge even come close to being Vasari-esque. Just about all of them seem like they would be names of Advent governing bodies...
Here they are if you want to know in case you decide to invent your own name for it...
sentio, reputo, arbitro arbitror, probo, pendo, judico, iudex, censor
But glad you like the general concept...
I think that Iudi sounds more Advent and not Vasari-ish at all. The Vasari one would be called the Astorak Council or something.
all of it sounds good to me.
maybe they're known as arbitrators? thats an english word derived from arbitro or arbitror, but it could still work....idk about the general name for them all though. The Arbitrators just doesn't cut it. In my opinion.
EDIT: the Sentient Council, which is comprised of...no arbitrators sounds too english to be used.....since it is an english word....um....i like the probo or pendo, what words could we make about those?
Well, there is always the option of just sticking a J on the front of it, and an K on the end... Jarbitrok sounds Vasari-ish, but at that point, we may as well make up a word from scratch that sounds better...
Ideas for the Test so far (and these are written straight out of my brainstorming throughout the day, so bear with me):
first half: the 3 caves (with a 4th cave that you're not supposed to go into)
Each cave stands for what you will face when you enter it:
1st cave: for the Dangers of the Past
2nd cave: for the Tensions of the Present
3rd cave: for the Mysteries of the Future
4th cave: for the Horror of the Unreal (dealing with doubt, fear, and helplessness)
Here are the situations I've thought of so far for what will happen in each cave. Keep in mind that they follow the Sinner's storyline and the Test changes depending on the person that is being tested. So in this case it would be Flankx. The situations would be designed specifically for Flankx to overcome something each time. They go as follows:
(past/present/future) journey with an old Vasari throughout the situations in the first 3 caves. leads the way in the second half of the Test, in real life.
(past) discover a hidden temple, meet the Spirit of Light, Spirit of Darkness attacks
(present) be captured by the Mani'k, have to request Foxknim's help to escape
(unreal) meet a Vasari woman
(unreal) watch the Darkness consume the Exodus Fleet
(future) diplomatic conference between Vasari and TEC, Advent break in
(past) learn the History of the Spirits from the Spirit of Light
(future) catch a glimpse of the Darkness's thoughts as it approaches a building where a Vasari-Advent-TEC truce is being discussed, Flankx recognizes himself through the windows
(present) have to fight Foxknim
So obviously more ideas for the present would be nice. and some more unreal things. Remember that everything that happens in the Unreal cave is NOT TRUE. (from the Sinner's perspective. Sorry, no females!) So just think of any wacky situation that would never actually happen in Sins, from the past, present, or future. That's my basis for the Unreal cave. The future needs some more ideas as well. I have a fair amount for the past, but if anyone has more ideas that would be great.
@Volt_Cruelerz - not letting me quote ur thing. But Jarbitrok should definitely be part of the Sentinel System (if we're gonna have that as the name for the general court). Maybe the name of one of the judges? If you don't like that for the name of the whole group. And made-up words are always fun
how about Jarbitorik Cruelerz, pretty much the most respected and feared judge in the Sentinel System? (its also ss, so it can have a great ss=nazi=bad for the reader. don't want them to be thinking these are GOOD guys.)
Hmm... Well, I like the caves idea. Of course, I would think that there would be vasari women. Or at least there used to be. It is plausible that they used to exist but due to cloning have become asexual, but they would be more hive-minded if that was the case, so I still think that females exist. At the very least, it would be in the "past" cave...
As for naming a judge Jarbitorik Cruelerz, no. Just no. Volt is a character from my book and a member of the Extuli species of "humans." In it all Extuli have last names beginning with Cru-. Cruelerz is not Anglicized, it is Extulian. Also, Extuli are a benevolent race. They save humanity or many occasions, so I'm not okay with you naming a brutal and feared judge after one. Let alone Volt.
Sorry. Cruelerz just has the word cruel in it so my mind was mislead...i forgot about his star role in ur book. Now I remember! Hopefully you'll forgive me. Still think Jarbitorik is a good name for the head judge tho
Well, for all I care, he could be on the Supreme Council, let alone the lower courts... Besides, who is to say Vasari have last names?
Ehh, you're fine..
This is very good. The horror of the unreal sounds like the cave in Empire Strikes Back.
ha this WHOLE thing is taken from the Wheel of Time series. 3 caves: 3 passes through the ter'angreal to become Aes Sedai. unreal cave where things that might have happened but didnt: that one like teleporting stone that Rand uses to get to Tomans Head. It would make sense if you knew the series.
Well its loosely taken. If you knew the two you'd recognize the similarities. not plagurizing tho!
very interesting stuff. anyone else have some input?
I'll comment if someone posts something...
anyone hav more ideas for what should happen in one of the caves?
Or how about this, anyone hav ideas for what the Vasari education system would be like? Anything on that?
Well, due to their extensive use of nanites, most knowledge would be downloaded into the nanites in their heads, allowing them to instantly "learn" anything they needed. This would be handy if the commander of a ship was killed in a blast somewhere on the ship. The sub-commander could just have access codes and whatnot downloaded, allowing for a smoother transition.
In the case of the Omnipitor, before his death, the senate would likely extract the knowledge stored within his skull and store it for the next one. In this way, the Omnipitor's consciousness and memories would be passed from one to the next, thus making the Omnipitors progressively wiser. After 10,000 years, one could assume that some memories would have to be deleted, but most would remain, making the Omnipitor the wisest Vasari to have ever lived.
In the case of Vasari young, the race would likely value some sort of togetherness (as it assures their survival), but are too brutal to have indoctrination a standard practice. Vasari young would only have their lessons downloaded, rather than moral beliefs. In this way, even young Vasari could function as doctors and top-level researchers. This would allow them to advance far faster than any other race. Despite being themselves mortal, their knowledge would be immortal.
Think about it. How much faster would we have advanced if great minds and leaders such as Dr. Tesla, General Greene, Washington, Edison, Franklin, Archimedes, Da Vinci, Plato, and others had their knowledge stored permanently? We would be so far beyond where we are now.
If you've seen Stargate SG-1, the team goes to a planet that uses a variation of this system which allows them to advance a few centuries within a couple decades. Think of the effect over 10,000 years!
Let's say that someone is corrupt/evil. You can simply deactivate their neural nanites. This would not harm them, while deleting the unwanted/treacherous memory. The Mani'k would specialize in this process. However, since they follow the orders of the Omnipitor, one could see how this power would not be abused.
Now, some may say that it is too out-there, or not supported, but really... Can you think of a more efficient way to teach others than to instantly download information into their skull? Vasari have had x thousand years to perfect nanites. We know they use them for medical treatment, so memory storage isn't that unreasonable.
Perhaps someone will come up with something better, but this is what I've got and I'm tired, so while I could do more typing, I'm done for tonight...
I like that idea. Like it a lot. But what about the stuff that can't be downloaded? You kinda touched on that when you said only lessons and not moral beliefs would be downloaded. what about courage and decisiveness and things like that? What about ideals? How would young (in the sense of a "new" Vasari, not just child-age Vasari) learn or create a personal opinion on these things?
Well, it depends on social class...
Omnipitor: gains the wisdom of all who came before him.
Council: receive knowledge of classified government actions and of all laws ever created.
Captains/Admirals: very advanced knowledge in all regards
High Ranking Officers: advanced knowledge in most areas
Low Ranking Officers: some advanced knowledge in the areas they work in.
Crewmen/Pilots: moderate knowledge of physics
Researchers: Extremely advanced knowledge in area of expertise and advanced knowledge elsewhere
Now, because they are born into a specific class and all those within it have more or less the same knowledge, maturity would be highly sought after as it would show the difference between the older members and those who are younger. This would also give cause for the respect of one's elders as their wisdom is what keeps you from blowing yourself up.
Morals and whatnot would be instilled by the peers and parents (or other genetic relative) of the young Vasari...
Hope all that made sense...
It does but it wasn't what I was asking about. I don't really mean morals (don't think the Vasari are big on those) but just the things you learn from experience and not from being taught (or downloaded via nanites). What kind of situations would the young Vasari be put into to bring out or learn these other qualities? (cant really put a name on them, just the stuff that you learn by living.) I think the Vasari would put the young Vasari in specific situations to speed up the learning process of these things (qualities, ideals, traits?). I just don't know what situations and what things the young Vasari are being speed-taught.
Oh, just caught that last sentence there. I don't believe the Vasari reproduce, or not anything like we would think of (so far), so I don't think there would be Vasari parents. And their peers would be learning these things too, they wouldn't know it yet. (Genetic relative and parent are grouped together in my mind concerning the Vasari, they have neither)
Does that make sense?
Okay, I see what you mean. Well, think of it this way. Book knowledge is downloaded, experience would just have to be gained the old fashioned way.
Every culture has a passage into adulthood. America has the 18th birthday. Israel has barmitzvas (hope I spelled that right). African tribes have tests. Now, there are also other rights of passage along the way and some after, but in general those are the main ones.
Due to their nature, I would expect the Vasari to have tests of maturity and judgement.
Let's say that the first four years of their life are free time where they can act like ordinary children as they have not yet gained any knowledge. Upon their 5th year (or other measuring tool of time, but since we don't have one for them, I'm using ours) of life, they become applicable for the first Vexperok (from the latin "experior" meaning test, and from the english "vex" meaning confuse).
This first of the Vexperok would test the basic foundations of social skills. For this test, they are placed inside a chamber and are holographically presented with a few situations. This would be more of a passive test. Each of the holograms has a distinct personality that the young Vasari (or Vasling as I'll be calling them from now on) must interact with. Some characters are belligerent, while others are friendly. By evaluating the Vasling on a predetermined rubric over the course of a few hours, the Vasari proctoring the test may pass or fail the Vasling. If passed, the Vasling is rewarded with a treat of some sort (they are more or less children you know, so some sort of candy would work...). They will also be implanted with basic scientific knowledge at this point. However, if the Vasling fails, it will be strapped down and have a hot iron make a tally mark (or other system of counting) on the left shoulder of the Vasling. It shall be tested again one month later. Should it fail again, another tally will be added, only this time, a more painful system is used.
The second Vexperok would test common sense at the age of 15. This test would be executed the same way the first was. By testing the common sense of the Vasari, the proctor may determine whether or not this Vasling is ready to join the general workforce of the Vasari. If they pass, the Vasling receives knowledge of physics and engineering. If they fail, the same system used above, only on their right shoulder. This is the last stop for the lower class.
The third Vexperok is probably the hardest and tested at age 20 with the intention of checking to see what the Vasarling values most. They will be given 300 images which they must place in order of greatest to least value to them. The "key" is chosen by the Omnipitor as this tests the very foundations of Vasari wisdom. If they succeed, they are given complete knowledge of the inner workings of a Vasari ship.
The fourth and final Vexperok is only for the upper class (would-be council members, captains, admirals, Mani'k, and Omnipitors) and tests endurance at the age of 30. Now we can assume that for something that lives 500 years (they are reptiles which normally live for a long time and have nanites to fix bodily damage), 30 would still be quite young. For this test, they are sent to a remote desert planet and put under a dome with a crashed spacecraft. Using the materials from the ship, they must survive and send an interstellar distress call. After another year, the proctor will arrive to take the Vasling home. If the Vasling fails, they die. Or rather, they fail if they die as there is no definite end to this test regarding a time limit. If they survive, they become a Vasari and have the knowledge implanted in them according to what field they intend to go into.
The Vexperok would test many of the things the Vasari value and would help assure that their system works.
As for your comment about parents... I know you like the alponian idea, but I would think that there are other, more efficient ways to reproduce. Mass cloning works wonders and helps to assure that the Vasari are on an equal playing field for the final Vexperok. However! Class systems only work if you are born into something. Advancing past your original class would be nothing short of a miracle. For this reason, they must be born rather than just created in cloning chambers or transformed from something else.
Also, no offense to you, and I know you love the idea, which is by the way creative, but I find a few problems with alponians.
1. Viral therapy would be a whole lot more efficient than covering someone in slugs.
2. The Vasari ruled their slaves from orbit. They never went down to the ground as they considered the other races beneath them. To allow someone to become one of your own requires you to first think of them as an equal. The Vasari are incapable of this.
3. No class system works without having been born into one. Your idea is that every Vasari starts as something else. Well, originally there would have had to have been actual Vasari that reproduced sexually or asexually. They would have made the class barrier impenetrable by nothing short of a prodigy. This flies in the face of something that is based upon everyone starting at the bottom.
I understand you want the Vasari to be barbaric sorts of things that act like the borg in that they absorb all others, but realistically, they would have to be somewhat democratic and peaceful race in order to survive for so long while on the run. They fight because they are desperate, not because they want to.
You can continue down the path you have for sinners, but for the benefit of future fan-fics, I want accuracy. I mean no offense to you here, but I'm just saying that I find that the Vasari would have to reproduce the old fashioned way in order to use the system they do. Sinners is a wonderful story that you have created and I want you to continue. Its just that for those who come after you, they can look at your example and this thread and see what to incorporate. This thread is dedicated to what would really work for them, not what sounds cool in a book. Once again, you have done a wonderful job in Sinners, its just that I don't really think the Alponians would work...
I'll say it one more time. I'm not trying to be mean or be offensive, I'm just going by what would logically work. If you can explain the alponians, then that's great. Its just that for now, they seem to be somewhat pointless unless you were really short on crewmen for your new capital ship. I guess it would have a purpose there, but ehh... I'm done...
I'll address the alponians thing first, cause thats down at the bottom where i can see it right now. just to clear it up. they would be like bacterial slugs, in that they were injected into the bloodstream and allowed to run amok inside the body, changing the dna code in the cells to turn them Vasari. And the Vasari would come from somewhere originally. The Vasari that escaped from the Empire's fall would be pure. But maybe there were no females (or my idea, they have never been females) and somethin else was needed to populate the near-extinct Vasari race. Cloning would work (and i think they do that as well) but it would take time to grow a clone, and in the beginning the Vasari needed more of themselves immediately. And so the alponians. Its something like a virus that molds the dna code of every cell in your body, changing it to the Vasari dna pattern. There wouldn't be slugs crawling over their body, there'd be an injection into their arm or maybe their neck and then they're left alone until the process is complete. Maybe originally the process was extremely painful as all your skin would have to come off to be replaced by whatever the Vasari have, but they've perfected that process so the new body of skin is under the old skin already when it comes off, and its relatively painless. Maybe the "patient" is sick a couple times during the process, but no lasting harm.
reading over your post again, i covered why there was a reason for the alponians: they had only a couple thousand Vasari after the Empire's fall (taking from my book where there's a full capital ship complement or from the Sins lore where there's a wreck of a ship with who knows how many survivors) and they needed a fast way to "grow" them. cloning they did but it took time, and they needed immediate results. Instead of a couple of years they had more Vasari in a matter of days. I think I covered most of what you had issues with. If I missed something, let me know.
Now for the education system.
I like the idea of being put into a certain situation to have to overcome something. pretty much what we worked out for the Omnipitor/FAC, and it works just as well on the common scale. (and jews hav bar mitzvahs, not israel . lots of jews in israel, but not israel as a nation ) I think the age length between each test should be a little longer (if we go by a 500 year mark, maybe age 50 is the last one, and the ones before it change accordingly) but thats a minor issue and not worth discussing much. You are a gem of ideas, however, and I thank you for them (on behalf of the entire Sins community, of course ).
EDIT: also, the alponian treatment happens very rarely. like you said, there would have to be a great need for the Vasari to integrate outside their own special caste. but once someone or something was integrated, they would be considered completely Vasari and their earlier species would be forgotten, as in the being (whatever the creature is, human or otherwise) itself wouldn't remember where it came from. For all intents and purposes, that Vasari had just woken from the Dark Thought. so cloning or alponian treatment would have the same end result, a newborn Vasari, just the process in which it became Vasari would be different. and alponians would happen only rarely. want to stress that again. it would be reserved for maybe a rebellion leader, or a form of torture or punishment. a Vasari commits a serious crime, inject alponians and in a couple of days he's a completely new Vasari. so i never really explained that before. glad i got it out now.
I think the Test at age 30 kindof goes alittle too far for the Vasari. Remember they are trying to survive while im guessing the majority of Vasling surivive this final test. Its still an unnecessary waste of Vasari Life to just leave them there for an indefinite amount of time. Especially a year. This Culture is on the run. Putting a Vasari down on a planet and leaving them there and then returning to pick up the survivors would be a waste of resources. As well, Im sure there is a more simpler test maybe a hologram of somesort where they have an alotted amount of time. Maybe three days in this hologram (onboard a ship) to pass the same test just not real, only a simulation. If they dont pass this test. They will find themselves in the harshest of jobs amoung the Vasari. As either the Regular Vasari Army (seperate of the Man'ik) As the Man'ik would be the Elite kindof like Delta Force for the U.S. Or other various jobs that require more strength then smarts. Maybe Refinery and Mine Supervisors. As the Vasari would rely on machinces to speed up the process of gathering resources.
While every Vasari has the slight chance of making it to the next level of Society. Most will have to accept being nothing more then another drone amoung the populace. You dont want too many Chiefs and not enough Indians. After the last test they would either return to their normal jobs in the Empire, Scientist, Soldier, Intelligence officer, Transmissions Technician etc. Some would definitely find themselves falling from their social class simply because they dont live up to the majority in that social group. Other then this I actually like what ive read here and cant wait to hear more from you guys
