Today (August 24) the imfamous torrent site The Pirate Bay has been shut down by order of a Swedish court after several large companies, which have constantly tried to take down the website, pressured to the court to do so. The staff of the Pirate Bay have said they are looking for a new host for their site, so we may not have seen the last of them. A company has also proposed buying the site, and adding legal copies of software and movies, and charging a monthly fee.
Pirate Bay was one of the most groundbreaking sites created. It helped start the whole piracy thing, and the controversy following it. Many people will miss it, whether it becomes a pay for site or gone for good. What are your thoughts on the matter?
Edit: Pirate Bay is back. They just won't give up, now will they?
No matter what - they are gone for now. But they where not stopped completely. Like I said before "it is a game!"...
Those countries do what they want to look good. Here in the States; we end it! Law breakers are punished and if they try again. Then they are punished even more or worse.
So now the guys that owned the site can even sell their stolen stuff to another law breaker. Thus they can get started again as another group with another name and such with more money to get what they want.
That judge did nothing but make more piracy. The guys that buy the site and start it back up again. Plus the past owners who will go do it again some place else.
I say bring them over here and allow the US to punish them. Take away everything that is not theirs to begin with and get rid of it completely. There should be extradition policies for these things. Thus those people would face charges here in the USA.
I do not agree with that stopping things by shutting them down rule. It never works! It has to be removed completely and put under lock and key or burned like trash.
I like the burning thing actually. We have this thing here about drug house's - we bust them and usually end up burning them down to the ground. It cleans up the mess they make. Too bad they don't burn the dealers with it though.
But that is my best answer... burn them down completely and be completely rid of it; softwares and anything else they used to do it with.
Burn baby Burn!
That comment is simply stupid. Different countries have different laws. You cannot convict people for something that is not illegal where they do it.
Now, the TPB case if ofcourse semi-settled. What they did was illegal in Sweden and they will be punished, as soon as the high court makes a new ruling about the severity of their punishment.
As far as the internet goes: it's a massive grey area to judge actions on the internet which are illegal in your country. Every page is visitable (probably not a word ) anywhere from the web. You can sort of filter per country but that's no where near air tight. If it would become illegal then no one could offer something anymore that is illegal in even one country of the world, and with some countries that have rediculous laws you can pretty much just shift-delete half the internet. Intrestingly however soon-ish a lawsuit about this will take place in the Netherlands. The dutch version of the RIAA/MPAA etc had filed a lawsuit against TPB ordering it to shut down because what they did is illegal in The Netherlands. TPB did not show up at the lawsuit so they were indeed convicted but now they will fight that ruling so the whole thing will be judged in court.
Can a site be convicted of a crime in a totally different country from what they operate in? Soon we might know..
I agree with jafo, more power to the large corporations and let those poor mofos that cant afford series, movies and art be without it. Let's use more american weapons on them so we can destroy their infrastructure and let's make COPYING totally illegal and ban everyone from getting ahold of stuff only american top dollars should be able to buy. F*ck the rest of the world.. America F yeah!!!!
And then let's get working on that third reich while were at it.
Ignorance is bliss
A Swedish court rules TPB admins too broke to pay damages. You can read all about it here.
Clearly does not work, your crime rate per capita is in the top 10 in the world.

So much in that post pisses me off, im not going to look into this thread again.
Technically I could even get sued for posting that pic
I know, and the funny thing is the dutch company that sued them sued the previous admins and claimed they should shut down the site, while they aren't even the owner of the site and can't close it down to begin with. It's gonna be an intresting case.
Not quite sure how all that crap equates with agreeing with me...and for the record the premise is very likely screwed as I'm not American....
And henceforth, you shall be known as: austramericans
Oh please. If you cannot afford movies then boo-hoo. That is no reason to steal.
LOL....good on ya!
*doc sneaks off to phone the I.N.S. and T.S.A.: Jafo's in for a latex "Airport Special" hehehe.
Last time I checked the US barely had five percent of the worlds pop but over 25% of the worlds prison population - food for thought. In short about 1 in 30 Americans is in jail. Then when you factor in parole the number runs into the high twenties. Land of the FREE - - I think not.
Hell no other country or collective group of countries in any time period in the history of the world has ever imprisoned so many of its citizens and for such long peroids time to boot! And that is not the worse news.... The bad news is we will in all likelihood break the 10M mark by the turn of the decade! Something to be proud of to be sure. You just know all the fascist countries have serious jealousy.
Liberty, freedom, justice - these ideas apparently died several congresses ago. Hell from where I sit, Canada is more American than the USA
On a side note, by my estimate, Georgia tops the nation, with about one in 11 adults in the state's corrections system.
I will point out that the Pirate Bay is back up already.
Just tried it and for me there still there..
Exactly as what can be read in this... so i won't need to repeat again_&_again_&_again that Law is applicable or enforced in their case or anything else that deserve it.
The Hague tribunal does it for war criminals in genocide causes. What's theft that generates unemployment *AND* poverty within any workforce(s)?
Well, one down, several more to go. It's not like piracy is on the virge of collapse. They can't stop drug dealers, eliminate poverty or stop people from speeding, what makes you think piracy is any different? I use to pirate software before. I learned it was pointless when you wanted to enjoy the full use of the software so instead I opted to use freeware or buy the software. Today I only download TV shows and maybe movies I can't find in video stores. I have no issues downloading TV shows. Advertisers not making a buck? Oh well, not like I watch commercials anyways, I either change channels, use the restroom or if I record it I simply skip the commercials. I am not losing any sleep over it.
Because we simply aren't tough enough on criminals to successfully motivate them to cease their criminal activities. Lop off a finger if you're caught stealing, castrate a rapist, without the benefit of pain relieving meds and watch the crime drop.
Piracy is theft, period. If you pirate software, music, whatever, you are a thief. Justify it in your own mind all you want but it doesn't change the fact that you are taking what would be income for another company or individual artist. There will always be assorted low lifes that will take advantage of others for their own gain. Too bad because they are just another reason for a screwed up world.
Indeed it is gone adn for that I say good ridance. The bad part means that the old game (games that are no longer on sale or available anywere else) archive that is was is also gone. I do wish that the industry woudl create and achive were all old games that have been abandoned by the conpagnies for they do not support them anymore or are no longer part of the profits should all be listed and distributed for free. Just so no one jumps int eh curtains we are talking about games that are 10 years or more old, and who probably do not have follow up titles.
An example would be Dune Emperor, game has been 100% abandoned by EA quite a few years ago. It's not a private website that acts as the Dune Emperor official website and techsupport. But the game cannot be distributed. At this point it's retarded to not making it publicly available for free. Hell a website liek that could probably make a bit fo revenue with 1$ gig or 5$ per month fee.
EDIT: A second example would be Gangsters2. I played a bti at my friends house whent he game was new it was fun. But i had never gotten the chanse to buy it for lack of funds. And when i could and wnated to buy it I couldn't even find it in the old games bin and the website was long gone. Result i will never play it.
No matter which way you wish to argue it...there are VERY REAL losers - and in this instance they are my friends [Stardock] ....they provide me AND YOU with the opportunity to interact on this/these site[s].
If entities and mentalities that inspire/promote the likes of Pirate Bay get their way then you can kiss legitimate sites goodbye....and/or your own collective arses.
Why do I get so vocal? Because nary a day goes by when I'm not being PM'd about yet another skin/whatever that someone somewhere has pinched and/or is providing elsewhere without consent/authority.
When you account for the sales from people that would never have bought your products without it, I will then accept your real losers premise. I have yet to see a single entity even ask the question of me in a customer survey, let alone publish anything resembling evidence. In the drop down list for "What lead you to buy this product", add piracy, see where it gets you. I don't have a software company to use for such a purpose, so I can't get anything resembling legitimate results myself. Until at least one of you bothers to do it, all I have to go on is myself and the people I know, and there is a really large net gain for you guys in particular. You've even gotten sales out of die hard pirates with terabytes of media on their computers and none of it legal, just for not having copy protection on the damn disk. Until you do, I consider you just as crazy as the guy running torrents 24/7, 365.
Piracy: just don't do it or this might happen to you
That's already posted...
oops thought i was following this closely too.. my bad
Yup, it's back up already, with a picture of the t-shirt someone mentioned earlier in this thread. You just can't stop these sites, stop one, and two take it's place, and shutting down this one failed too.
