We’ve picked a tiny handful of the pre-order group to become alpha testers based on how many other betas they’ve participated in, forum karma, and a number of other criteria.
Those of you not in the alpha, fear not, you’re not missing very much. The beta is scheduled to come out around PAX (Penny Arcade Expo).
Be forewarned, we plan to close the beta shortly after PAX and it will remain closed for some months. Those who want to get the beta can pre-order the game.
I am leaning towards beta 1 being only cloth map in order to let beta testers have more input on the game mechanics (fewer assets to change if we accept a suggestion).
There will be an Alpha tour later this week (possibly tomorrow). Stay tuned.

Also hilarious is that even with gigantic pixels and ancient technology, it competes handily gameplay wise with a lot of modern stuff.
And while I'm here... I didn't make it into the alpha either it seems. Disappointing, but not very. My input is likely to be most useful (if at all) when Tactical combat is in and we can see how the strategic and tactical layers of the game interact.
Yeah, I got that mail too and was very disappoited that it didn't have to do with the alpha... ah well... all will be good when beta starts.
I'm sort of glad I did not get into the Alpha, since I'm pretty busy with other stuff and would prefer more dedicated testers than me. It would have been cool, but I can wait for Beta.
Why not have alpha invites sent to everyone who pre-ordered?

I would consider that unwise wandering into NDA breachness...if indeed you are under NDA....which I don't want to know.

Anyone in on the alpha would basically have 3 choices
1. not post here anymore
2. lie about being in the alpha if asked/pretending not to have inside knowledge
3. get kicked out of the alpha
I'm guessing most people would go for option 2 if they cared enough about the game/community to want to be in the alpha in the first place.
I think asking something indirect through which the information can be gained doesn't violate the NDA. Something vague, yet helpful, like "Would you like a free Alpha pass?". Answering 'No thank you', or not answering at all, is clearly the mark of someone under the influence of an evil, all-binding document created by the Lawyers of Lucifer himself as no mortal man, woman or child could decline.
Strange, i dont know one single person that would answer that with yes. Alpha's are work and me and most of my friends really have enough of that. Heck, i turned down BETA invites to a couple of games just this year, 'cause i dont have the time to waste on some bugged code.
But thats just me; if you got the time, i am full of envy and might hate you for it.
Ehm, standard operating procedure here would be to answer "yes please!" and then doubleclick on the "Elemental Alpha" icon on your desktop. (or in Impulse or whatever) Lying: is there any situation it can't get you out of?
We have asked the alpha testers to not disclose their status. Though it is not explicitly a clause in the NDA, they will be removed from the alpha if they do so (actual NDA violations would be more unpleasant).
As slipping up would be bad for anyone who is testing, I'd ask that people don't try probing others for clues. You might get some small pleasure from the knowledge, but it wouldn't be worth the price of ruining it for someone else.
No doubt. SD is very serious about this stuff to say the least.

(All silliness aside: I'm not a fan of lying, but it can be nessesary in a social context. ie. Not violating NDAs and still maintaining a conversation. Also, that new sweater does look good on you. Honest. )
Oh come on, lying about clothing is terrible. What you're supposed to do is let them know exactly how ugly the sweater is, by lying. "I didn't think it was possible, but there really is a limit to what you can wear while still looking good."
That way you get in a cheeseball line for the reality tv show you don't know you're in.
