-Anyone else excited about this game? As someone who spent way too much time with the bauldars gate games back in the day, to see them come out with a "spiritual" successor is pretty exciting. I'm interested in the whole "playing through your characters origin story" as a game mechanic. I hope the game has deep character development, and isn't just focused on the story...though the story does look impressive. I'm a big fan of other BioWare games like the Kotor games, but again, those were more focused on the story than character development.
Check out this new gameplay movie. http://www.giantbomb.com/quick-look-dragon-age-origins/17-1477/
I'm gonna buy this game for sure.
Where was this jewel of a thread hiding?
If there was a game in the past 7 years that I'd be the most excited about, this is it. This game hits all the right keys to me.
I'll be a very happy gamer if DA:O lives up to its expectations, and I believe it will.
It's just too bad that it's being hard for me and others outside the normal distribution circles to get this game, but everything will be an afterthought as soon as I get my hands on it...
OMG this game looks better and better... I want it NOW!
Thanks for that video... Looks good... and wow a rpg on normal difficulty that looks more challenging than usual... nice.
The game does look very promising. I'm happy that the DRM is very reasonable. I am unhappy that on the release day, there will be a (if you pay for it) DLC released. It seems ridiculous that if I buy a brand new game on release day that I'm already missing out on content, unless I pony up $10 more dollars...
That video though, felt like extreme torture. I could not stand the interviewer's voice, or style, and would have enjoyed the video more if it were just the game's audio. That's why there is a mute button though. What a godsend.
The only DLC you have to pay for is Warden' Keep, and it's $7. If you buy the digital download CE (Deluxe Edition), you get it for free. Warden's Keep was always intended to be for-pay DLC, and the only reason it's available on day 1 is because of the delay in the release date of the PC version of the game. This gave the DLC team enough time to finish it by launch date.
And to address the inveitable questions of why it wasn't included on the disc: the cut off date for content lockdown of the game didn't allow that to happen.
If that was the only reason, then it would not need to be paid content but free. There is something unsettling about the trend though I won't actually come out and say it's morally wrong. There was a time when developers/publishers created a game and tried to give the consumer the best damn game they could get out, hope that it was well received and we'd seen an expansion pack or something built ontop of a great game in a year or two. Now, these companies are holding back intentionally. It's one thing to acknowledge time constraints and have expansions on the drawing board but as a consumer, I am pretty set against these mini downloads and "stuff" packs. Hell you mention a trailer for Elemental and some people get really worked up because that's time and resources taken from the main game... and yet it's allowed to slide here.
I think this game is getting some leeway because its Dragon Age and everyone is excited about it, can you imagine the response that some of these other games would get, you know, the ones that ship with around 10 hours of content tops for 60 bucks and they tack on additional content for additional money on day 1, meanwhile the game is so damn buggy no one can play it all the way through for a week?
I am entirely aware of all of that, and it still smells like a con game to me. The digital download only is not an option for me. I don't like D2D, and many of the games I enjoy have mods or programs that don't work with the specially encrypted D2D .exe (like the script extenders for Bethesda games.) It's also $65.00, but doesn't come with any of the material thigns that the Collector's Edition comes with. It would be cheaper to buy the regular version and buy the DLC than buy the D2D version. All of the extra special items mentioned will be available with item codes anyway (if Dragon Age is done like every other game made by Bioware. So you're paying an extra $15 for the DLC, or paying $5 more than the CE, but miss out on having any of the tactile products it offers as well. Any way you slice it, it looks like a money grabbing move to me, even if that wasn't the case. Just because it's Bioware and the game looks amazing doesn't mean that we shouldn't be saying anything at this kind of trend.
Don't get me wrong, if the 7$ really does translate to a 5 hour quest as stated, then it's not a bad deal at all. I paid $30 for HL2 Episode 1 and wanted my money back after I finished it in what felt like minutes. It just irks me that the only reason it's not available now, is because the game was delayed and no one has any use for it yet. Having DLC ready to go before the game is shipped means that it was pre planned well in advance, and could have easily been added into the master with a very minor delay (that happened to happen anyway in this case), or should, imo, have been a free download. Pre-planned DLC that was held out of the game so it could then be charged for is a scam to me. When DLC becomes worth the price then I'll be less irked by it all. As it stands, most DLC isn't worth the money, and when I buy a game on release day, I should have all of the current bells and whistles. Having to buy the game AND the DLC on release day is just a sucker punch to the wallet in my eyes.
Only DLC that I thought I payed good money for was Sins Entrenchment, and soon to be Diplomacy too. Hell that expansions for GC2 were great too!
I preordered Dragon Age... normal... Im looking at Special Edition... thank god im not getting xbox version... but ya my mind tells me this DLC is... it should be in the game... but ya... $7 for 5 hours of gameplay.... hmmm... I wanted to talk to stardock support and switch it to Special Edition... Ill think about it...
If you're not buying a box, and just getting a direct download, I wouldn't bother getting the special edition unless you really like all of "the making of" stuff. All of the in game special items will be available on release day to everyone who has access to the internet.
Unless they've changed it from how they've done every game so far...
I remember readong that all of the editions get all of the DLC free, sans the Warden's Keep which only comes in the Deluxe Edition (Not the Standard Collectors Edition, they're different.)
I would only agree with the current situation if the normal main game would be $7 cheaper. Now this game is not that expensive on retail ($55-ish which is below average here) so I might get it after seeing if it's really a good game or not, but DLC is definitily a black page in gaming history if you ask me. Instead of the promised episodic content for which you would never have to pay for more than you'd play it ended up in being pay twice to get the full game in the first place, in only a matter of 2 years. Hmm maybe I should wait for a gold edition in about a year, with the DLC on the retail disk.
God, I agree with above, the commentary on that video is dreadful, they should just shut up.
Yeah, I'm not big on paid DLC either. However, if you simply wait for about a year before buying a game, they'll bundle all of that stuff into a "Game of the Year" edition and sell it at a discount. Sometimes, you'll even get a proper expansion module in the deal, not to mentioned a patched-up game. They all do it this way, including NWN, Oblivion, Fallout 3, etc. Of course, the hard part is waiting a year for a much-hyped game.
I seriously can't wait for Dragonage to come out. These last couple weeks of waiting are hell...lol. At least I have my first Wedding Anniversary and Halloween to keep me preoccupied until it comes out.
I've been playing Bioware and Black Isle games since waaaaaay back in the day. Fallout 1, Baldurs Gate, Baldurs Gate 2. Some of my favorite gaming memories of all times. The level of depth and options in those games, for the level of technology they were using, was simply astounding.
Be careful, that might sound like if those were not as important as Dragon Age.
A pity that it's release doesn't share time frame with my vacations.
I'm kind of confused by the different versions on Impulse. The more expensive one appears to mostly have bonus items as downloads. Does it include some actual content as well, or is it just the items and such?
IIRC it contains Warden Keep, which is extra content. It is included with the more expensive box only. Buyers of the cheaper version will have to pay extra to play warden keep. Correct me if i'm wrong.
Warden's Keep is included in the Digital Deluxe edition only, because you don't get the tin and cloth map. If you buy the game box (regular or CE) at retail you'll need to pay $7 for Warden's Keep.
Thanks for that. What remains is the (cheapest) digital version on Impulse. I can't remember what it was called and can't be arsed to look it up. The more expensive one was the digital deluxe edition. I assume the chear digital one equals the regular version minus packaging?
As far as I know, correct.
The "Regular" download is the same as the retail standard edition plus the online bonus items.
The "Digital Deluxe" download is the Collectors Edition at retail plus more bonus items and Warden's Keep (vs. the box and map).
Regular download exactly equals regular retail edition. There are no "online bonus items."
What you are talking about is the preorder bonus item, of which every retailer gets their own one (amazon, impulse, gamestop, etc). Impulse's memory band is the same as EA Store's. Impulse is the superior delivery system, though. There has been conflicting information that the memory band is actually included with all preorders, meaning impulse wouldn't have any exclusive in game item.
Deluxe download is just like the retail collector's edition, EXCEPT that the digital version will have $7 warden's keep for free instead of the bonus dvd, cloth map and tin case. Both versions have the 3 extra collector's in game items.

And with a 20% coupon to impulse the CE is $52. Totally worth it if you got that survey awhile ago
I was wondering... is Impulse version of the game going to be MULTI5 (with subs in other languages) or just english?
I just hope we'll have the european release through impulse.
Huh er....uh...no, No, of course those other distractions are as important as Dragon Age... lol
Actually our first Anniversary is far more important than Any game ever could be. My wife and I will still be together many many years from now when I'm old and gray typing on some other forum about how cool Dragon Age 10 or Elemental 5 is going to be.
She was standing right behind you when you typed that Raven X, wasn't she.
