The 2012 movie is coming out soon and I think it might be a good movie (in my opinion of course). I'm a fan of giant explosions and disaster movies. As I watched the trailer, the same question pops up: is the world going to end?
Of course by now everyone has heard of 2012. Mayans predict it, Nostradamus predicts it. And so many other sources of doomsday predictions like the Book of Revelations say the end is nigh. I'm sure everyone has commented on it on one post or another, and everyone has their own opinion on when, how, and if our world, as well as our existence, will end. So I just want to know exactly your opinion on armageddon: the end of teh world.
In my opinion 2012 is possible, but very unlikely. no one can know for sure. However, i guarantee you one way or the other, Earth will be destroyed, wether it be by an expanding and exploding sun, or a 200-mile wide asteroid slamming into the planet. Even the very unlikely possibility that a black hole wanders into our system or a gamma ray burst from a quazar or pulsar just so happened to point in our direction. Earth will disappear, but humanity doesn't. One day Humanity will face a danger, either by the Yellowstone SuperVolcano, a meteor, or the final World War, that will test our ability to survive against insurmountable odds. If we are able to stop or survive a major catastrophe, then that proves that we are ready to face any danger the universe has to throw at us. And yes, we can probably survive a zombie apocalypse
Soo...what do you think?
Note: This kinda has to do with Sins because the Invasion of both the Vasari and Advent will prove wether humanity can fight an alien threat on two fronts.

This requires that you have at the least a very basic understanding of plate tectonics (which you get in most states by the 8th grade).
Lets start from the beginning. Everyone knows that there are 4 layers of different materials in the Earth. The solid outer crust, the mantle, composed of quasi solid nickel and iron, the liquid outer core, and the solid inner core
If so, and you also payed attention while learning about earthquakes, you would know that s-waves can not travel through the liguid outer core. There are 2 kinds of waves required to make an earthquake, which cause tsunamis, earthquakes, and some eruptions, the Primary and Secondary wave. The Primary wave is faster then the Secondary wave, and can pass through solids and liquids. The actual damage cause by earthquakes occurs when both waves reach the surface and their motions combine to become Surface waves. Henceforth, your retarded, and should learn some basic facts about tectonics before you attempt to tell other people what will happen if a pole shift occurs.
Nor do I.. but if the rewards are there why wait? The cool aid is good right?!!?
To me there is nothing better than watching a killer global catastrophe movie in all its raging glory, except maybe getting sublimely busy with a couple awesome ladies on a cold stormy night in the dead of winter.
While i believe everyone is entitled to their opinion and i do not want this to become another slam game like it did before with whiskey... Plate tectonics has little to do with what would happen if the core shifted. The earthquakes you talk of are caused by the energy released as the plates come into contact with one another, sliding faults and so on... And for that, you are correct.
But what i was talking about was the effin core of an entire planet shifting. The center of gravity, of (for lack of a better term) balance of the entire planet. We would definently notice THAT happening on the surface. As is it, the plates sit on top of a plastic like mantle, under pressure, it is solid. In areas of lesser pressure, it is more liquid like. How much pressure do you think would be put on a planet as its entire core is moved? When i said "tectonic implications" i was not talking about plate tectonics.

"Pole shift hypotheses are not to be confused with plate tectonics, the well-accepted geological theory that the Earth's surface consists of solid plates which shift over a fluid asthenosphere"
That is in this link, but read the others too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pole_shift_hypothesis
For a man who puts his faith in the bible, you seem to understand almost nothing about it. You may have some general ideas right, but you're completely incorrect about what the bible says. You say you know how the world will end, but anyone with even a simple understanding of the bible knows that the world isn't going to end at Armageddon.
Not trying to reignite the argument, but smoothtrooper is technically right. Armageddon, if i remember corectly, actually means "something to be revealed". What that means of course, is up to interpretation.
Whiskey, if you read this, don't be mad. We are not trying to trash your views and personally i really respect them.
Taking in count that mayans were the best astronomers of all the history... The meteor theory is the most plausible .It's possible that they calculated the trajectory of some particular meteor in the space, and knew it was going to impact that year and that day.
Un saludo.
How can you say that the Mayans were the best astronomers in all history? The didn't even have telescopes! They couldn't possibly find some meteor/asteroid in the depths of space and be able to predict with acuracy to the day when it would strike the Earth, let alone predict if it would even hit the Earth.
The mayans were fabulous astonomers, for their time. They could not have located a meteor and plotted its trajectory without:
A) Telescopes to view it with.
B ) Understanding of the strength of gravity and its effect on objects motion in space
C) The knowledge that the Earth moves, not the sky.
It is possible, but highly unlikely. Objects in space that do not give off or reflect light are nearly impossible to see with just your eyes
well, I thank you CaptainAanderson for respecting my views. It really is nice that a few people do.
Everyone deserves it.
If we can't agree on something simple (like the fact that we can't agree on everything) then the end of the world will happen exclusively because of humans, nevermind a pole shift or black hole.
aaargh Skynet will nuke us all 2012!
My favourite thing about this thread, is that everyone's a renown and credited scientist. You are all experts in your field at the top of your game. Congratulations!
It wouldn't be the internet if we weren't
Dresden Codex proved that the Mayan civilization was at least 2000+/-500 years AHEAD of the Europeans when it comes to Astronomy & possibly even more scientific achievements... why much of the entire cultural artifacts were slandered or simply destroyed by invaders, btw.
They could not have located a meteor and plotted its trajectory without:A) Telescopes to view it with.
While I admit this is possible, the mayans also abandoned their cities and were a small tribe living in the jungle when the europeans arrived. (if i remember history class correctly). The technology difference between the Native Americans and Europenas was completely tipped in Europe's favor. (gunpowder, ships, armor, navigation,..etc).
While it really is impossible to KNOW that they didn't have telescopes, I think it is a safe bet they did not because no such devices were found anywhere in the americas. The mayans were ahead of the europeans in astronomy with regard to making predictions and prophecies based on the apparent movements of the sky, but the europeans used the stars to navigate. Neither one of us really know, but those are my thoughts.
Some people are Guluble (sp?)
Calendar was made by man therefore it means nothing.
IF the world end it's not because of a calendar In anycase rthe planet only needs to get rid of us humans then it will be fine. This all sounds like the Y2K thing.
Nothing will happen. Business as usual.
Could they build temples as good if not better than the Egyptians?
Did they mine for gold & minerals... pirated later, i might add?
Their technology *WAS* already beyond a paganism approach to any religions or militaristic aims.
Small tribe(s), you say?
I agree, not many ancient civ could survive on open land much less on an rock mountian top. Their astrology and their way of measuring time is still being study by academics today. Also not to mention, probably a richer history than those spanish who came. Sure if you were talking about their warfare techs you are in completely correct they are inferior to them. But they at least kept their knowledge when Europe was just barely coming out of the dark Ages
Hmmm... I am also a fan of disaster movie like the "The Day After Tomorrow". And now, there is "2012" which I think a great disaster movie. "We were warned". Is it really the end of our world? I hope not. I still haven't reached my dreams. Well, this is just movie.

I am not trying to say the mayans weren't advanced beyond the common depiction of uncivilized savages that is usually associated with american natives, they built, they mined, they made a calendar, and they survived in a jungle full of things that could eat them. It's impressive.
When the europeans arrived in the americas, the mayan cities were abandoned. Empty. That was my point; if they were so advanced why would they leave their established places of living to eek out a meaningless existence (they had no technology left at this point) in the jungle?
Europe had been out of the dark ages for hundreds of years, the entire continent was rather prosperous. Not to mention that the dark ages are only called that because there are very few records of what happened after the collapse of rome (thus the time being "dark" to historians).
Every civilization's way of living is still being studied by academia, the greeks, the romans, the persians, the aztecs, the mayans, the inca, the vikings, the chinese (both pre and post han dynasty), the japanese, the pacific islanders, the aboriginees, Everything. Not because it was unbelievably advanced for its time, but because people want to know.
All of these peoples have changed something about the way the world developed (ships design and the vikings for example).
The end of world doesn't care about if the mayans were a billion years ahead of the europeans in astronomy, and we should only care if it is going to happen december 21st 2012. Just a few weeks after the 2012 presidential election in the U.S.
Aztecs (and plenty of others North & South, btw) were there... meso-america was much more "diverse" historically & geographically than **JUST** the Mayas.
Eskimos, Apaches -- the tip of the Iceberg.
And, then the white man tamed the land & the people, be it tribal or ahead of the Europeans (from the 16th century or less, must i remind you) with isolated principles of science (chemistry or more, comes to mind) & specifically adapted technologies. One of which real flight, btw.
Check your sources for fact rather than opinion.
Actually, it had much more to do with the fact that the Europeans were largely immune to Smallpox, but the natives weren't. The disease killed something like 90% of the Noth American natives.... you(general "you") should read Guns, Germs, And Steel by Jared Diamond..... FASCINATING explanation of the colonial system.
