The 2012 movie is coming out soon and I think it might be a good movie (in my opinion of course). I'm a fan of giant explosions and disaster movies. As I watched the trailer, the same question pops up: is the world going to end?
Of course by now everyone has heard of 2012. Mayans predict it, Nostradamus predicts it. And so many other sources of doomsday predictions like the Book of Revelations say the end is nigh. I'm sure everyone has commented on it on one post or another, and everyone has their own opinion on when, how, and if our world, as well as our existence, will end. So I just want to know exactly your opinion on armageddon: the end of teh world.
In my opinion 2012 is possible, but very unlikely. no one can know for sure. However, i guarantee you one way or the other, Earth will be destroyed, wether it be by an expanding and exploding sun, or a 200-mile wide asteroid slamming into the planet. Even the very unlikely possibility that a black hole wanders into our system or a gamma ray burst from a quazar or pulsar just so happened to point in our direction. Earth will disappear, but humanity doesn't. One day Humanity will face a danger, either by the Yellowstone SuperVolcano, a meteor, or the final World War, that will test our ability to survive against insurmountable odds. If we are able to stop or survive a major catastrophe, then that proves that we are ready to face any danger the universe has to throw at us. And yes, we can probably survive a zombie apocalypse
Soo...what do you think?
Note: This kinda has to do with Sins because the Invasion of both the Vasari and Advent will prove wether humanity can fight an alien threat on two fronts.

Machines taking over the world?
...only if we build something like skynet, and a virus infects it changing it's programming. The person to make that virus must be psychotic. If A.I. is invented, it would not try to lead a robotic war against humanity, for an A.I. would probably be at the time vulnerable to being "killed", shot in the artificial brain. If it does figure out how to control other machines, it wouldn't be able to control every machine in the world unless we enable it to do so. Only in the rare and idiotic event that we (maybe either the U.S. or Japan) actually make an A.I. that has access to the world's nuclear armaments, communication centers, and research institutes, as well as build it in an almost unreachable location, and it just so happens to become self-aware, and just so happens to see humanity as a threat, then yes, A robot can destroy us.
If that happens, I will laugh in the face of all the world leaders
-ALL HAIL IDLENOOB!!!
I've decided I'm going to be the one who who makes the sentient AI bent on wiping out humanity I have come to the conclusion that 99% of people are moronic dipsh!ts unworthy to live upon the earth. They should be wiped out, and hopefully evolution or whatever you believe in will be able to do a better job the second time around
Oh right, I almost forgot:
And there is nothing you can do to stop me! BWA-HA-HA-HA!
Artificial Intelligence cannot gain conscience from anything other than what it perceives as being real; give it a world to determine, it still must rationalize it within a given set of functional elements.
Would it feel heat? Not unless it has a mean of detecting cold or warm and only then, compare both.
Would it see an object? Not unless it has a sense of dimension AND a perspective over whatever space contains or constitutes it.
Would it burn that object if threatened by it? Not unless it has a reason to.
Thus, AI can't react on instinct other than what has been defined within its purpose, which in fact, can identify heat as an object (or vice-versa, btw) simply by reasoning THAT specific reality.
People, in contrast, have control over matter not artificially but by variable sensory deductions AND rational objectivity.
As a result, ANY machines are no match for a quick reflex of switch_off decisions.
heres an interesting fact. if you were to throw a tenis ball up against a wall enogh times that eventualy it wouls simply path threw it. However the chances of this happing is somthing like a 1 in a billion trillion shot. the number is so big a googleplex may not be a big enogh number.
Zyx, I was simply saying that very little information is actually known about the origins of life. Thats why there is alot of research into the origins of life. A theory is still a concept even if it is "proved".
Humans do not understand what intelligence actually is and what makes it in the first place. The brain works nothing like a computer and is the most complex structure in the known universe. No one has the slightest concept of how it works. In fact, many researchers believe that it is impossible to make an artificial general intelligence.
Nano-technology crisis in which self-replicating nano-bots devour everything on the entire planet is more likely and even that is far-feched imo.
Simpler still Hey lock rocks and lights and liquids how grand, ooo I know changing states is fun let everthing have a solid, liquid and gaseous form!
Hrm ok..the universe is still boring, what can I do to spice it up.. ooo add little mes..!
Really little. Microbes.
Lovely ..they just sort of sit there though...let me instill in them the desire to make more of themselves, oh no now there are too many, let me allow them to evolve, oh there is one eating the others how cool... that was a great idea..let's see where this goes..
Excellent. Gabriel approves. In the meanwhile I will be using my pyshic powers to bring apophis the asteroid into a collision with the earth. Lets see which happens first k?
We've been talking about zombie apocalypse in a few posts, how do you think that will play out? I mean, as unlikely as it is, in the possible event that zombies DO rise from their dead sleep, how would you deal with it?
I think, all respects to him, that after Michael Jackson is buried, he will pull a thriller on us and lead a dancing army of the dead on mankind for having his children on live television without their veils!(btw, everyone who makes fun of him will be molested in their sleep by THE GHOST OF TEH THRILLER!!. HEEE HEEEE!!!)
also, Whiskey and Zedong are still allowed to post their opinions on this forum. Although I am strongly against their views, I shall respect them as well as everyone else and allow them to type what they want on this post, as long as it is on topic or to a response to another remark, and they (this goes for everyone, btw) don't type anything meant to offend another person (If you are angry on my view of god, feel free to comment, as I said before)
-NoobSauce94 (say, what happened to my tool bar?)
I don't mind if he posts, but I feel some obligation to fact-check his statements, for the benifit of anyone undecided who might be listening.
zombies probably won't rise from their dead sleep. More likely some idiot scientists wanting to make super-plagues for the next big war will create a zombie-bug, that turns people into zombies. 28 Days Later basically, except artificially created.
As for your idea noobsauce94, let Michael Jackson come. I'll be waiting with my big fat FOUR GAUGE Russian shotgun (that's ~23mm in European reference).
Love the enthusiasm whiskey , personally i prefer the Desert Eagle 50. Cal and the trusty 12 gauge, maybe the pickup, and run them down lol.
well, I also plan to have some of my own personally-designed little things, like the-
AR6 6.5x40mm Telescoped Caseless ammo assault rifle. Good range, punch, and firing rate, as well as capacity.
ML16 16x40mm NT (Nose-Tail stacked caseless) launcher. Doubles as a Grenade Launcher w/ airburst (like real-life flak) capability, and can fire various types of shotgun-styled shells/slugs
HMG15 15x110mm TC heavy MG. this baby fires explosive rounds, so you'll cut down hoards with ease
SR17AS 17x80mm TC- this baby fires over a range of 4-5 km (~2.5-3 miles) with its Mach 4 (~1320 m/s) velocity explosive multipurpose shells
SR14M 14x110mm TC APFSDS. Fires rounds even faster, at 2000 m/s muzzle-3000 meter impact (nearly 2 miles), at 5000 meters (max antipersonel range) it has a velocity of 900 m/s. It doesn't explode though.
and a couple of armored and aerial vehicles for transportation/hoard nest assaults. Also of my own design.

In all seriousness, though, it would be essentially impossbile for a virus, to revivify a dead body: viruses are essentially DNA inside of a little ball (or tetrahedron, or dodecahedron, or tripod-y-thing: they come in many shapes) of protein. The virus does its damage by invading cells, replacing their DNA with its own, and "executing" that code, usually to make more viri (or viruses, not quite sure which is actually correct) using the cell's protein-production organelles. In order to do this, the cell needs to be alive. If a virus attempted to infect a dead cell (and cells normally die a few minutes to a few hours after the person does), it would be unable to do anything, because the cell's DNA-reading apparatuis wouldn't be able to interperet the code. It's like trying to put malware on a computer with no power and a cooked CPU: you might get the info in there, but it won't be able to do anything.
Scoutdog i don't think he meant that the virus would revive a dead body, but take control of one that is alive and essentialy turning the victim into a zombie like state, maybe like a kind of parasiteic virus or something. I believe that would be possible, hard to do but possible.
also an interesting thought, instead of a virus why not use mind control to make such "Zombies", they would do your bidding, but they won't stink of decomposing flesh like the traditional zombies.
whiskey, nice aresenal i only wish i was that prepared
I think it'd be more like an I Am Legend thing, where the people aren't actually dead, but they exhibt zombie like behavior.
By the way HMWA X
I suppose it's theoretically possible.... although a parasite would be much better-equipped to do that than a virus.... maybe something like Toxoplasma Gondii could be able to do it..... especially if the zombies were "programmed" to nonfatally attack their victems, thus spreading the parasite.
Darkfall it nailed on the head Scoutdog. I did say 28 Days Later style though.
also Darkfall, I'm not as prepared as it looks, as none of those things even exist (yet I hope, bwa-ha-ha (in low sinister voice))
Creepy..anyway you better get a move on, on those weapons, the Zombie attack could happen any at moment and you want them to be surprised not you lol
Like every life-forms, even Zombies (once properly defined & analyzed for weaknesses) would have to suffer through some sort of cellular-decay... so, that takes care of the *End-of-the-World* anomaly of evolution caused by such bio-hazards or complex gimmicks created by fools & freaks.
I've got a survival kit handy too; anti-bodies poisoning them enough.
You're watching too much "apocalyptic" movies if you believe Zombies are a real threat to our specie. It's called natural selection of the fitest or smartest.
Fix HIV or Influenza strains first, then we'll (or most, btw) reach 2012 -- alive.
Mate, while you're there spewing out theories and ideas about how the zombie apocalypse isn't technically possibe during the zombie apocalypse.
I will meanwhile be leading the remainder of humanity to safe haven to hold out and possibly rebuild.
The scientists I will need will need to be accurate. You have proven you won't be. Sorry, you will not be part of saving humanity.
However, obviously if I see you in trouble, I will attempt to help you, assuming it doesn't pose a risk to the people i NEED alive.
Troll.
No. Trolls have brains.
I don't know if you've ever even taken a basic psychology class but our brains do work a lot like computers in at least one respect. It's built of a ton of transistors!
Your neurons are binary, either they fire or they don't.
Another thing we know about that is that as neurons fire together, they will build connections between them.
To say that noone has the slightest concept how it works is quite a statement. Considering we've build devices that can articificially interface directly with the brain, it's an incredibly incorrect statement.
This doesn't mean that we understand how it works. The ancients knew how to exploit the natural laws to build massive structures, but they didn't understand the laws of gravity etc.
Okay I was using hyperbole, but my point was that what is known about that brain is very little compared to what is known.
Your comparison with transistors is true, but that doesn't mean that the brain is a computer. Its more like a whole group of computers all working together. The best way to think of the brain is to imagine it as an orchestra and each section does its own job and hormonises with the other sections. However, if one section is damaged, another part can take on the role. People who are paralysed can actually learn to move their limbs again.
You are getting psychology and neuroscience mixed up. Psychology is the study of behaviour, neuroscience is the study of the brain itself.
