The 2012 movie is coming out soon and I think it might be a good movie (in my opinion of course). I'm a fan of giant explosions and disaster movies. As I watched the trailer, the same question pops up: is the world going to end?
Of course by now everyone has heard of 2012. Mayans predict it, Nostradamus predicts it. And so many other sources of doomsday predictions like the Book of Revelations say the end is nigh. I'm sure everyone has commented on it on one post or another, and everyone has their own opinion on when, how, and if our world, as well as our existence, will end. So I just want to know exactly your opinion on armageddon: the end of teh world.
In my opinion 2012 is possible, but very unlikely. no one can know for sure. However, i guarantee you one way or the other, Earth will be destroyed, wether it be by an expanding and exploding sun, or a 200-mile wide asteroid slamming into the planet. Even the very unlikely possibility that a black hole wanders into our system or a gamma ray burst from a quazar or pulsar just so happened to point in our direction. Earth will disappear, but humanity doesn't. One day Humanity will face a danger, either by the Yellowstone SuperVolcano, a meteor, or the final World War, that will test our ability to survive against insurmountable odds. If we are able to stop or survive a major catastrophe, then that proves that we are ready to face any danger the universe has to throw at us. And yes, we can probably survive a zombie apocalypse

I'm not sol sure about that: a lot of the stuff I've been reading about lately (Scientific American is an excellent magazine, BTW: understandible to most laypeople and hobbiests, but no dumbed down @ all) talks about the idea of cells and protobiological material being to a certain degree self-organizning, a bit like crystals growing out of molten rock: it's in their nature to behave contrary to entropy, and become more complex with time.

I view the whole 2012 scenerio cum grano salis. It is ridiculous. Nostradomus said so many things, that any of it is bound to happen in one form or another. When you have over 3000+ recorded predictions and about 10 "come true," i have trouble believing you after a certain point. One thing about Nostradomus's predictions is that people only recognize them after the even has already happened. He'll say a bunch of shit, and people are like, "This guy is crazy.. :/" Then it ahppens and people in effect see what they want to see and turn his predictions into what they want in an effort to believe that if someone can predict the future, it's got to be this guy.
So, Nossy isn't very reliable in my opinion.
The whole Mayan calendar situation is ridiculous, also. Their calendar ends simply because their calendar ends. Anthropic principle. Their calculations got a little bit funny, so maybe they thought time would end? No. 2012 just happens to be when our solar system changes hemispheres within the Milky Way. So, there. Problem solved.
Now, how the world is going to end? Well, it's not for millions of millions of years. How does a world end to begin with? When it ceases to exist. And since very little phenoma near us can destroy entire worlds, we're ok.
When will the human civilzation end? That's the real question. In all reality, a big comet would not kill everyone. We would still be humans, just what comes out of the dust in the hundred years following that huge collision is subject to change from Human. Who knows what we would have become, but we wouldn't be extinct. Also, our mitochondrial DNA suggests that we have survived a super volcano eruption in the past. Just about 10k people were left to start the humans over again. Granted, if Yellowstone erupted, then us Americans would be screwed. But people over in Australia will ahve it a little big easier. I think since we are self-aware, fearful beings, we will do anything in our power to stay alive. And if a big huge catastrophe were to occur, i doubt ALL humans would be wiped out. One thing all sound humans have in common is some instinct to try our absolute hardest to survive. No matter the cost.
Now, while I don't believe that the "prophecy" has any real significance, I do wonder why that particular date has stuck in our consciousness for so long, at the exclusion of others. My personal theory was that the calendar added credence to it in a way that random people with signs on street corners could not, plus the fact that for the conquistadores who saw the calendar and more importantly the new-age-ers who launched the fad, 2012 was comfortably distant, but still near enough to be relevant. By the time it got too close for comfort, the fad was already well-established.

I agree, thats what we do we try our best to stay alive, and when the end does come we will still try our best to survive. I didn't notice did anybody say anything about machines becoming self aware, like skynet(terminator series)?
but i would like to say something, we all have our beliefs and they will be different then everyone else, that is because we are our own person, everybody interprets everything differently, even the bible. i even have this friend who believes in the great Jaffa or something like that but we have to respect each others beliefs to have a discussion without anybody getting offended. (somebody always does because they believe they are right but everybody's religion thinks that they are the true religion) (im not starting an argument or anything)
Anyway we look at it human civilization most likely will not end anytime soon.

I'll just add that in most sicieties witch have predicted the "END" of the world do not say the world will end. They eitehr say nothing or use words liek the Mayan word Apocalito witch to us means the end of the world but to those societies it mean't "New Bigining" or "Change". So I'm a bit shy to say this could be the end. I say it could more likely be a huge chnage on a planetary level. Good or bad I dunno. But if humans are to wipe them selves out Nuclear War has my vote, for individual humans might be clever but humanaty as a whole is dumber then seaming crap. In my opinion we are way dumb enougth to kill our selves for sure.

Because, we're too far away from anything else that can kill us (being an alien species). Natural disasters aren't enough, we're like cockroaches. It's like playing a 1v1 map on Sins with 1000 star systems on it, humanity and some alien race that may or may not want to kill us on the other side of it, not knowing we're there.
Not quite true yet. There are some cosmic events (star collisions, vegabond black holes, and the like) that we don't really have any ability to stop. Granted, we'd know about them a long time in advance, but I dn't think that we could develop even the most basic generation ships fast enough...... although if we had a few hundred years warning (which seems reasonable, given telescopes these days) it just miiight be feasible.

While I may have said some hurtful things, and been unkind, or offensive to some/certain others, I apologized. As of 22 July 2009 2153 hours Central Time, I have yet to recieve an apology for some of the things people have said to me, insulting my beliefs needlessly. Yes, I may have done the same thing, but the fact remains I APOLOGIZED. I am not saying this as a way to say 'I'm better than you', but rather that I at least had the kindness to apologize IF I offended anyone.
Additionally, scientist cannot be objective. It's just impossible. Their findings will be colored by their worldview. A creationist will interpret the finding one way, an evolutionist a different way. Even amongst evolutionists, the two schools of Gradualism and Punctuated Equilibria will both come up with findings that fit their version of evolution.
With that, I take my leave of you. I shake the dust from my cloths, and my feet. I pray to God that if it be His will, you will know the truth, and if not, then I am deeply sorry for you.

Common misconception here. People assume that the explosion would kill us, when they are quite wrong. Yes, the explosion from the supervolcano would be terrible, and anyone with 15 miles would probably be screwed, but the layers of dust and ash would block out the sun, not just in America, but around the world, for years, perhaps decades, or even a century. While the dust and ash wouldn't kill us directly, all of the plants the rely upon the sun would, and we would follow them as our food source started to die. I highly doubt that humans survived a super volcano. We might have lived during an extremely active time of volcanos, but no way in hell would we live through a super volcano eruption.
Also, study other religions/beliefs from a non crhistian point of view. Put yourself in their situation and try to find flaws to their beliefs but also to your real ones. If you can go back to your real beliefs and still find them to be the absolute truth, that means that you have learnt nothing about all it. *shrug* Just saying. You can only know how an apple is if you tried all the points of view to see it.
In any case, if humanity manages to unifiy itself (riiiiiiiiiiight ), or a group of humans do and have enough resources, and go to space, we might talk about the survival of human race. But unless we really reach space to make it our home too, humans are doomed no matter what.

Even the most literal interpretations of the bible must acknowledge that there is no way to measure time until the fourth 'day' so therefor those first three 'days' could have been what would now be acknowledged as millions and billions of years.
