The 2012 movie is coming out soon and I think it might be a good movie (in my opinion of course). I'm a fan of giant explosions and disaster movies. As I watched the trailer, the same question pops up: is the world going to end?
Of course by now everyone has heard of 2012. Mayans predict it, Nostradamus predicts it. And so many other sources of doomsday predictions like the Book of Revelations say the end is nigh. I'm sure everyone has commented on it on one post or another, and everyone has their own opinion on when, how, and if our world, as well as our existence, will end. So I just want to know exactly your opinion on armageddon: the end of teh world.
In my opinion 2012 is possible, but very unlikely. no one can know for sure. However, i guarantee you one way or the other, Earth will be destroyed, wether it be by an expanding and exploding sun, or a 200-mile wide asteroid slamming into the planet. Even the very unlikely possibility that a black hole wanders into our system or a gamma ray burst from a quazar or pulsar just so happened to point in our direction. Earth will disappear, but humanity doesn't. One day Humanity will face a danger, either by the Yellowstone SuperVolcano, a meteor, or the final World War, that will test our ability to survive against insurmountable odds. If we are able to stop or survive a major catastrophe, then that proves that we are ready to face any danger the universe has to throw at us. And yes, we can probably survive a zombie apocalypse
Soo...what do you think?
Note: This kinda has to do with Sins because the Invasion of both the Vasari and Advent will prove wether humanity can fight an alien threat on two fronts.
-I am Noobis, GOD OF FAIL AND NOOBITRY!!!! BOW BEFORE MY FAIL! BOW!!
ummm, what do i think, you have to be careful with that question
youve also seen that thing on the discovery channel about the 10 possible ways the earth will end ( i think it was ten)
it was good though, my favorite way would be the black hole idea
but anyway, its definitly possible but you have to consider the prohpicies of such a thing, they've been the saying the end is near for a long while. but they say the things leading up to the EVENT are happening as we speak, war in the middle east, economic failure, and other things.
I believe there are 5 possibilitys that could happen to end the world:(also happens to be the ones you mentioned)
1. Yellowstone supervolcano erupts
2.Meteor
3. Nuclear Winter(wwIII)
4.Pole Shift
5.Aliens(hey it is a possibility)
Anyway you look at it the end will come, #3 seems most likely to me
but 2012 is also the end of the mayan Calendar, so it may just blow over
The only thing we can do is wait and see, that is the only way to be sure what will happen.

The fact that the world is supposed to end just because that's how long the calendar of an ancient civilization happens to stretch to sounds very conspiracy-theory to me.
Sure, there is always the chance there will be some natural disaster, or we blow everything up ourselves. The odds of the former have never changed throughout the entirety of human existance, and I don't have enough cynicism to believe the latter will occur anytime soon.
Well, it's theoretically possible for the prophecy to become self-fulfilling: the religious/mystical loonies who really believe in that sort of thing could get violent when nothing happens for a while, and we've already seen the power of terrorist attacks to destabilize the geopolitical balence. That could concievebly result in a world-war situation.... but it's all up to chance.
I swear, the idea that the world will end in 2012 because some ancient people decided to end their calander is the stupidest thing ever. Is it possible the world will end in 2012? yes. Will it end simply because the Mayans ended their calander? no. The end of the world has been predicted tons of times, and yet, it's still here. The calander on my wall ends December 31 2009. Does that mean the world will end the next day? Why does the end of a calander mean the end of the world.
This probably wouldn't result in the end of the world. Most of the US wouldn't be well off, and it's likely the rest of the world would get colder, but humanity would probably survive.
Imo, the most likely end of the world senario is massive nuclear war, followed by asteriod impact.
The year 2012 no one understand what it stand for cos it may just be end of 1 period & the beginning of another from the point of view of the mayans. No-one knows what the mayan think 2012 is ony they themself know. According to nostradamus & the lost book it seems 2012 is not determine as such.
If 2012 is dooms day nuclear war is unlikely cos nuclear missile can be shoot down before it reach its target. I think it will be more related to mother nature, asteriod impact & maybe blackhole which may occur in space due to collaspe of a planet.
Although it is THEORETICALLY possible for the collapse of ANYTHING to create a black hole, the only macroscale black holes that develop in nature do so as a result of the collpase of stellar-mass objects or larger. Not planets.
Ok, for some reason quoting isn't working right, so my replies are in red.
Shooting down missiles doesn't work as well as many would have you believe. Intercepting a missile is not easy. Try shooting down a bullet with another bullet. Also, most systems work best with a sufficently early warning, which is not always available. Missiles launched from a submarine right off the coast give almost no warning.
A black hole forming is probably one of the least likely ways the world will be destroyed. For a star to collapse into a black hole it needs to have more mass than our sun. A planet under any natural circumstances cannot form a black hole. The same can be said of our sun.

Were something smaller than the minimum mass for a black hole to be collapsed into a singularity, its lifetime would be a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a second. It would affect nothing. Disregarding the fact that this is impossible through natural occuring processes
2012 will not end the world. I know when the world will end. And I'll tell you. Before you ask, I'm a Christian, who believes the Bible is the FINAL AUTHORITY. That mean homosexuality, sex before marriage (fornication), and a number of other things are all SINFUL, i.e. WRONG.
Here's what will REALLY happen. The Rapture will occur. This is when Christ, the God-Man, will take all CURRENT Christians to heaven. Does this mean after the Rapture you going to go to hell? Absolutely not! Revelations says that there WILL BE Christians during the Judgement. After the Rapture, you've got seven years. The only way you can't be saved after that is if you take the Mark of the Beast, which means that you follow and serve the Antichrist. People will claim that he is God, but HE IS NOT.
Keep in mind here that I am NOT trying to say, 'Accept Christ or else you're not going to heaven' (though this is true). While I would be OVERJOYED if you became a Christian from reading this post (albeit skeptical at first), I WILL NOT try to FORCE Christ upon you. That would not be right. If you want to know how to become a TRUE Christian, then go out, buy a REAL Bible, not the Joel Osteen 'Your Life Now' Bible. A good recommendation is a Nelson or MacArthur Study Bible. These have GOOD (that is, doctrinally sound) notes in them, to help the reader understand.
Anyways, that is what would REALLY happen. Will Armeggedon occur in 2012? No. If it was going to, I wouldn't be here telling you this. Could it happen seven years from now? It's certainly possible.
And no, people who become Christians after the Rapture will not try to make the world end, just to fulfill the prophecies of the Book of Revelations. If your curious what Revelations is abut, then buy a Bible and read it. That's the only simple way to do it.
EDIT: as for the MOVIE 2012, I think it looks like an excellent FICTIONAL story to go see in a movie theater.
No one is saying the movie 2012 is anything but fictional. Just like Harry Potter is fictional, and Dan Brown's books are fictional, and The Golden Compass is fictional, and the Chronicals of Narnia are fiction, and Left Behind is fictional.
Is there any reason the Rapture can't be Dec 21, 2012?
In my opinion, there is no reason that the world would end in 2012. Why not 2013, or 100000? Just because a now extinct, relatively primitive civilization's calender ends that year doesn't mean, well, anything. They could have just been too lazy to fill in more days. Will the world end: yes, eventually, by any of millions of ways. Will humanity become extinct: most certainly, but whether we go down in a blaze of glory against a hopelessly superior alien foe, or simply because we couldn't keep track of our machines' exhaust is up to you. Nothing true is set in stone (unless you feel like pointing out the Ten Commandments or some other "exception"). Now if you don't mind, I'm trying to finish my Star Destroyer before some some communist hippie blows it up. Good day, and cease this forboding paranoia. It Gets Old.
yes and no. I didn't say that. I said that if the world were to END in 2012, I wouldn't be here. I'm still here, so it's not possible that the world will END in 2012.
The yes is because the Rapture will be at a time when no is going to expect it. A good chunk of the population of the Western world is possibly thinking that on 21-12-2009 the world will end, so they'd be WATCHING that day for something to happen. The Rapture will come like a thief in the night (think 1st century AD, ~0-100 AD). There will be no warning.
But no, there's not any reason it CAN'T be, but it's just WAY too unlikely.
If you'd like to know more about the Rapture, go out a buy a Bible. Trust me. It'll be the best book you'll ever buy, and it's also the best deal. What other 'book' can you buy that actually contains SIXTY SIX books.
Also, the world will end in only ONE way.
Hey! That's what I'm doing, too!
I think there's supposed to be some sort of alignment of the sun with the galactic center or something, but I can't remember. I don't think the world will end in 2012. So what if the Mayan calander ends? Maybe it starts over like when the odometer of a car reaches 9?. I think I actually saw that somewhere too but again I can't remember. I was always curious as to why it had to be the end anyway so it makes sense to me. When the world ends I'm sure it'll be obvious.
Fairly close, yes. In 2012, the galactic rotation reaches it's 'halfway' point. This is one of the rare times that the 13th sign of Zodiac is visible. Nostradamus' predictions were that the world as we know it would come to an end when the 8 spokes of the wheel disappear - this is believed to be a reference to the axis of rotation between the Earth and the Milky Way which align on - approximately - December 12, 2012.
In 2012 proof that bigfoot exists will come out. Thus ending the world as we know it.
The existence of Bigfoot would no more change the world than the existence of a new species of Ant. It would simply get a lot more media coverage.
One theory is that the ominous date is actually the Birth Date of the Anti-Christ, or perhaps his acension to some form of political seat of power. Me? I believe it's the release date of a version of Windows that has no bugs or glitches. At all.
I like the windows theory. I do believe it would be the apocolypse if microsoft realsed a windows that wasn't buggy.
No. A bug free version of Windows would bring about heaven on earth.
Alas, I disagree. Truly, t'would be a tool of Satan himself!
I don't think that the mayans predicted anything about 2012. This date has no correlation to anything at all in mayan mythology to my knowledge. That had to stop writing eventually. I think that some scribe was just bored and gave up. The Mayans actually believed that the Universe would end when it is 3 quintillian times its current age. That is a long, long, long time from now.
The movie will probably be very enjoyable.
If I remember correctly, the Mayan's calender is merely mapped to the rotations of the galaxy - how they did that is currently a mystery - and they believed that it was time for great celebration; a time of renewal and fresh beginnings. They didn't think of it as a bad thing at all.
I'm glad to see Emmrich back to his fullscale disaster movies; 10,000 BC wasn't smashing. Although The Day After Tomorrow was kind of underwhelming, I have faith he'll deliver another reason to see the world smashed to pieces.
Everyday is the end of the world for many people. It's called death and happens everyday. I don't know why people worries so much about the end of the world by some "wrath of god effect" but they couldn't care less about trying to respect the enviroment, try to get along with each other... If they were so truly worried about the extinction of the human race they should care also about those details and... wait, they are only worried about their extinction! Also, many people is mentally weak and/or bored and/or opportunists trying to make profit of others.
I have to point out at this juncture that from the Mayan perspective Dec. 21st 2012 would just be, essentially, one hell of a new years party, before the next cycle starts. In fact, much like we celebrated the millenium, (which if you don't remember was also going to be the end of the world) they would be celebrating the hell out of it because they were lucky enough to be around to experience it. As to the end of the world as whole, people have been expecting the "end of the world" to happen with in the next few years, for the past 2000 years (minimum), indeed it has been a fairly major theme of western society as whole.Though as an aside I do feel it is interesting that people like to conflate "the end of the world" with "the end of humanity". Ah, egotism.
"4.Pole Shift"
This one is the most likely way to end a lot of lives.. think how much water is going to flop over all the landmasses when that happens and how much plate disruption that is going to cause...
Humans wouldn't be here in the numbers they are if an asteroid didn't hit the planet and close out the dinosaur era..so who will be righting about the poor humans? The dolphins? The cockroaches?
The scientist in me believes we'll wipe our selves out long before then. Our complete lack of respect for the marvel's we've created won't take long to be out of control. Look at how children treat the technology of today! They have no respect for it because they take it for granted. When their children are running the show, I'm truly afraid for us. One quotes thats always stuck in my mind is, something like, "I don't know what weapons World War III will be fought with, but if there's a World War IV it'll be fought with sticks and stones".
Having said that, the Christian in me knows things aren't going to go out like that. There will be no anoucements, no big fan fairs or epic battles - you won't know it's happening till it's smacking you in the face.
