Hi everybody,I wanted to share the little experience I had with Demigods.First of all, please, add a pdf (or whatever) MANUAL to the downloadable client. This is not DOTA, and everybody did not follow the dev of the game. Game mechanics are not easy to understand while being chased by a freaky beast or sniped by some winged geek. I had to search by myself on the internet to find solid info about the game -> not good for new players. So I played a few solo games to get used to the basics. My first kills fill my purse, and it's time to buy some items. OMGWTFBBQ, how the hell am I supposed to choose among all those items without a clear comparing list of what does what. Yes, you have to learn. But still, I'm a new player, my DG is in the middle of the battle, I just DON'T have the time to scroll through all those items, because that stupid mage is igniting my ass, and it's smells like rosted chicken. So, after a few solo games, I decide to test my noobness in a multiplayer game.Mutliplayer / Skirmish / No suitable game has been found / You are currently the only player waiting for a game.Huh ? I knew that DG did not have a lot of promotion, but I can't be the ONLY player trying to get in a skirmish game, can I ? 1 minute... 2... 5... nothing. Okay, I'm the only one, let's try something else. CUSTOM games.Whoohoo, I can see games in the list, let's join one. Ok perfect, I choose a DG. Then some guy says, "no doubles". No idea of what he means, I just wait. "no doubles ffs". And I get kicked... Coolness. Okay so I finally manage to play several "custom" games, and omg, I suck, how can I suck that much, my -pickup- teams keep being steamrolled. 1 game, 2 games, 5 games, 10 games. 1/9 W/L ratio. So I start looking for templates, strategies, tips on the web, nothing changes, I still suck. Maybe I should upgrade my brain, or add a few fingers to my hands. Had my motivation down into my socks, untill I heard about "premade teams" and "favor items".LOL -> not good for new players. So I decided to host my own game, and forbid the use of Favor Items (since I don't have ANY, and winning 30 FP per defeat won't lead me anywhere soon), and voilà, equilibrium and challenge finally.BUTMassive lag, and after 30 mins the game goes poof.Again, my motivation to play DG drowns like a stone. So I decided to look for lag resolution on the forum, and I read a complaint about a guy not being able to play any skirmish games, being "the only player blahblah". WTF, only one poor answer stating "just be patient".So I have been patient. And I finally played a good DG game. I totally owned 3 games in a row having x4 the kills of the first guy below me. Zero lag. And now I can't wait to be at home to play again. So please, if you want your community to grow, there are a few things that need to be changed, and some info that need to be given, not looked for.Cheers !
Its true what you said about all the items, there are so many its hard to know all of them and what they do, best thing you can do is to start a singleplayer game and look at all the items, when you play online you dont have time for that.
I have played many games already and still I haven't tried all the items or know every single effect of them, but somehow it's a good thing too, even after many games you still have new stuff to try out
That guy who booted you for doubling up on demigods isn't the smartest I'm sorry. Doubles are not an issue and anyone who thinks so isn't looking intelligently at the issue. Double UB is just as bad as a rook and UB. Doubles are never and have never been an issue. I can see doubles being an issue if it's 2 regulus's working over vent or Teamspeak to coordinate snipes and mines but if not then it doens't matter.
And there does need to be a manual. I started DG about 3 weeks after it's release so i've been able to keep up very easily but some of the new players really strugle. There needs to be a system to help this. Maybe have a noobs only section that you can only join if you have under 20 wins on your record.
I feel really bad for players like the Original Poster. They don't know about demigoddb.com , they probably don't understand how favor works, and they will get no information from other players online. Single player game is generally so easy you won't learn about these things either.
Further more, while there are plenty of 'good players only' games, there are very few 'noobs only' games. Most of the people who would be concientous enough to create them... aren't noobs anymore. If this was a server based game, i'd love to be able to set up a 'noobs only' server so that new players could come and play each other. I also think a lot of the baseline game balance makes the learning curve high. A Bloody-Monk sedna is simply going to be unkillable for a noob with 1400 health.
I kinda disagree about doubles. Regulus is by far the worst class to double. In general you are correct and I welcome 2 regs, 2 oaks, 2 erebus. There are a couple exceptions.
For example: In a pro game, 2 QOT that know what the hell they are doing would be hell to play against.
About the PDF, this is a damn good idea and would improve the playerbase.
noob questions: How do I see my record in the lobby? How do I take a screenshot?
You cannot see your record from a lobby. But you can check it from the Pantheon webpage: Click for Pantheon
Thanks.
And the screenshots?
Personally I think the community as a whole has to embrace new players and guide them through game.
The one thing that ruined the Quake 3 community and drove a lot of players away was how new players were treated.
If you guys enjoy playing this game then it is your own personal responsibility to get new guys up to speed otherwise you are part of the problem and not the solution.
Absoleus, just be patient, we all went through the learning curve. Hell im still a beginner myself but after playing this game a bit I found it to be absolutely awesome.
I wish I could offer to help but i only know a couple demi's fairly well.
Be sure to read the strategy guides, those helped me a lot too.
And dont be afraid to ask for instructions in-game. The best teams are the ones who are most coordinated. A lot of PUG games typically dont have someone coordinating the game. Usually by asking directions someone will step up and take control.
Print Screen, and paste it to Paint
Or use an especific program, life Fraps.
Alt-Print Screen for the active window...for those with dual screen setups. Fraps is still better though.
Well I think that a good start would be to delete or change the message "you are currently the only player waiting for a game". Because 1°) it's wrong 2°) it drives new players to CUSTOM games, which is (in my opinion) the worst place for noobs.
And part timers too...
I also havent been able to join a online game yet. Well to me it isnt really completely a train smash since our AFRICA's internet isnt the fastest in world . I have a friend I met over WOW in germany and he uses a 18000kb line, the best we have in AFRICA is 1000kb at the moment (Sniff so sad)
Hopefully with future updates that will change but at present I'm content with just Lanning it. Yes the first time the game was pretty confusing for me too but after a half hour I have the mechanics licked and enjoyed it ever since. Im a HUGE fan of Stardock games like SINS. I'm licking my lips already waiting for payday so I can buy ENTRENCHMENT online.
Long Live the OAK
Doubles of any isn't good as much because there are 8 different Gods use them. But a regulus double is the worst, 2 double snipes is just too much. Obviously can be countered but the double snipe is not fun to be against or either to play.
To be fair its not hard to work out what No Doubles means!
Did you figure out yet that you can equip two pairs of boots? That is the one that threw me for a loop and had me scratching my head. WTF - I just equipped 4 different breastplates.
Lot of guides here... http://www.gamereplays.org/demigod/
More organized than the main forums.
There is a pdf manual, it is in the folder you downloaded/installed demigod to (usually program files/stardock games/demigod) and it is in the bin folder.
And there's even a shortcut to it in the start menu.

Here you go, browse at your leasure: http://www.scarylogic.com/demigod/items.php
A tip for everyone waiting for a game, grab a book while you wait. I've actually read through two full length books waiting for games.
oh no, the horrors of actually having to learn how to play game.
Dunno it just felt natural wearing 3 helmets and 2 breastplates at once =p
