Just as the title says, pings under 350 wont lag the game out.
Its my effort to help ppl get more games going, including myself, and stop the hate towards ppl with 280.
Once a guy enter a game I created (no description from where in the world I'm hosting the game, no one would join if I did it) and said to me:
"ffs man, you should never host a game, look at your ping" and left the room.
So, again, 350ms ping wont lag the game.
If you enter a game and every one has pings under 350 and the game lags, it might be the sim speed or the upload speed of some one if bad, not the 280 ping from some guy, don't blame him.
350ms ping or less, wont lag the game, again and again.
Enjoy the game.
Maybe the official term isn't Netlag but the idea behind the word is the same. The game slows down everyones connections to the point where they seem to be at 350ms in Demigod.
So for all players with a stable internet connection, ping anywhere below 350 will have a near equal chance to lag less because of the ping. Ping above 350 all have a greater and greater chance to lag.
But a player with 300ms and 100ms both have the exact same percentage chance to lag in a game if all you are looking at is the value of their ping.
Good summary and totally agreed.
If i play in Europe i got a ping under 100. If i play in the US i got a ping somewhere under 300. The games overall performance and response time to commands etc. is however pretty much indistinguishable.
Yet... occasionally you do see people with a ping under 100 that lag the game for everyone until they leave or get disconnected. Which - i guess - comes down to them having either a crappy computer or downloading stuff in the background.
In any case, kicking people merely because their ping is over 100 is pure ignorance and would be funny if it wasn't that annoying.
Doesn't this game use UDP? A stateless protocol? As opposed to TCP which NEEDS it's packets acknowledged, and therefore guarantees delivery and the order of that delivery???
I think what is trying to be said is that 350 ping can be acceptable provided it is stable. However, in every system there can be bugs or tweaks that cause the MS to increase, thus lagging the game. I'll personally always play with 350- ping, but to each his own.
How do you know that???
One assumes because that's how SupCom was.
Even though they used a 3rd party net code library (hence all the original issues...)???
Everytime I have played with individuals over 300 the game has stuttered and lagged. I'll go as far as to say when someone enters the lobby with a ping of 5 digits that "settles" to a more tolerable 2 digits the game will ultimitely freeze, lag, or stutter. That's my real life experience and because of this I will not play with anyone above 250.
How many "everytime" means? 1? 10? 100?
None of my games is with ppl UNDER 250, so my everytime is: 200 games this epoch, 100 last. No lag when every1 was under 350. I'm looking foward to replays and prove, at least from my experience, my point.
I recently had 3 Pantheon games where one or more players had a ping of 400 to 500 and no lags were present. (Which I don't really understand in the first place, since Demigod is supposed to have the net_lag value at 500 .)
I had a Pantheon game where somebody had 4,000 ping. Let's not talk about that one
Bump... still no issues playin w/ people under 350 ping here...
Agreed pings of under 350 are fine and I play regularly with people of pings of that level. The big issue is peoples connections not being able to handle the upload (or having background apps on that use the bandwidth).
Unfortunately the game has no current way of spotting if someones upload is not sufficient or when it is happening who is lagging the game. Would improve things no end if they could have a traffic light system based on upload bandwidth/against player numbers.
Tals
Well, a cant wait on the replays to prove my point, bump
Remember, no lag
Oh yeah, Damn.... lol Hmmm, I'm doomed
but the good news...
still no issues playin w/ people under 350 ping here...
Well with that sort of attitude most people are gonna refuse to give a shit what you say...I just went browsing through that thread a bit and in the few seconds I spent there I saw multiple replies by you on multiple pages. Do you honestly expect us to go browsing through all that? I don't know if you are right about this particular issue or not because I don't know enough about networking to really comment. I'll admit that it does look like you're knowledgeable though.
he WAS nice enough to bow out of this thread...
Ive never had issues with people of pings up to 350.... Also, I often have to have my ping "settle" in the lobby. It will be over 1k for a couple of seconds whne getting into a lobby. It always comes down to its normal ~100. I dont have issues in game, even 4v4 and the elusive 5v5.
The game slows the responce times down on purpose, that is what the tern NETLAG means to me. Even if you were capable of having a command respond in 50ms, the game forces all responced/commands to take 350 (or is it actually 500?) so that there is less percived lag.
Its a good idea, it make the game slightly less "twitchy" and less reliand on a perfect pind (like an fps does).
No I just quit the game is all. I'm too busy for videogames anyway, and this one is dead IMO (sorry, but true). And arguing in threads like this one is a worse waste of my time than videogames themselves.
As for "why are you still here?", I still had the game installed so I opened impulse to see if there were any updates (still somewhat interested in what the new demigods were) and when I didn't see it I went to the forums to see if there was any info I saw this thread was still floating around...
I still have not seen any official documentation for "netlag", but the concept isn't particularly relevant. Whether you consider 350ms to be some kind of holy grail or not, the reality is that pings approaching that threshhold are more likely to spike above it than pings that are still lower. When they spike gameplay suffers. That is what I have been saying since the beginning, and that is correct. I have shown substantial evidence as to why that is correct.
I've made the claim higher pings are more susceptible to spiking. Here's what you need to do to prove me wrong:1.) Give evidence as to why a lower ping would be more or as likely to spike than a higher ping.2.) Show any errors given in my evidence.
Here's what you need to do for me to quickly dismiss you:1.) "But I played one game with a 350ms pinger and it was fine. Ergo all 350ms pinger games are fine."2.) "But a client-side time-offset mechanism makes everything all better."
Good luck.
Later.
