You mean like the one with accuweather?
- Open DX Builder
- Disconnect from the internet and then import the widget.
- In the object list, find the "weather_image", "weather_location", and "weather_temp" objects. R-click on each and uncheck Script Enabled.
- Select all objects and export again.
I wouldn't know. I mean, it sounds the same as if I made a browser object and pointed it to weather.com, and I don't think that's in violation of anything.
But supposing they changed the HTML in future, too?If you're going with this idea, it would probably be best to heed Zu's advice and have an external script which the end-user can replace if need be.
I guess it's time to kiss DX weather widgets goodbye. What a catastrophe. I use them all the time. I'm sure well over 99% of us aren't going to start poking around with scripts any time soon; for most of us, figuring out how to change the location is a major triumph. It would be nice if Stardock could make a deal with the provider, but the provider would have to revert to the old code that worked with the widgets, if I have that right. I doubt that that will happen just for us. It looks like every single weather widget will have to be re-scripted by the author's for some other service other than the one being presently used. I don't want a logo or 4 or 5 links embedded in my widgets any more than Jim wants to put them in. This is really going to hurt DesktopX and all the skinners that make the widgets. You can tell how important this is by the size of the thread already. We users depend on Stardock to do something, if it's possible. There is a small degree of entitlement involved when you buy something, even if Stardock is not at all responsible for the situation. It's going to hurt Stardock in the pocketbook if DesktopX sales go down because of this. There is a certain logic in the company going the extra mile in this case because it will lose either way, financially speaking. Good luck to all of you working on the problem, and Zubaz, get it fixed like you get everything else fixed. Just don't ask me how.
I have read all 8 pages of this thread and everyone makes great points. However, graduating before computers even became popular, let alone learning how to script. I am surprised I got this far being self taught either through trial and error or the help from the good people on these forums. I for one appreciate all of the skinners that make such beautiful skins for the apps. on this website and for sharing them with us. I try to do my part by subscribing to Stardock to help pay the costs. It is all I have to offer. It has been about six years and I still subscribe or bought someone's skins or icons or something to be able to contribute something. I have a lot of the apps., some I use some I don't.
The main reason I bought the Desktop X was for the weather widgets because at the time SysMetrix did not have a Weather feed, now it does. But hardly anyone makes SysMetrix's anymore to match the WB's. The five day weather widgets are great for me because I am a golfer and can plan ahead with them.
I wish I did know how to code, but most of what has been written here about changing this or that is above my head and I am sure it is above a lot of others.
Whenever one of the free applications I have on my computer like a adware of spyware application has an update, my stomach drops. I still hold my breath and hope everything goes the right way. A lot of times it doesn't.
You are correct about 80% wouldn't know how to change the code.
I would gladly pay for a new version of Desktop X if this weather fix is in it, although I would dread having to un-install the old one and put in the new one.
Once again I thank all of the artists for sharing their beautiful work.

Putting a logo on a widget is basic common sense that everyone should have been aware of from Stardock,to widget creators to Wincustomize administration. The fact that it wasn't there while being on all Stardock products frankly shocked me. What I've been reading is counter to Zubaz's comment about entitlement. While creating really cool widgets and crediting Martin for the script, skinners weren't crediting the feed owners nor devleoping their own scripts. Thats not about feeling entitled. That sounds lazy to me.
Now it's an issue of reputation. I've got Stardock on a pedestal as I do some of the skinners. People who put in a lot of work and passion into something that they're giving away and some sell. But they love what they do. How different entities resolve this problem will make a difference in how I view them. Some will say,"Not my problem. I'm doing nothing." Others like VAD_M will try to fix the problem and resolve it. I guess it boils down to the individual and the type of person they are.
I think if I were trying to sell products,my reputation would be very important to me. If not,a lot less. Either way I wouldn't walk away with people thinking I didn't care.
This may be a dumb question but is that feed availible for skinners to use in their gadgets? If so, would it be feasible to switch?
-sigh-
First . . I've been a member of the community longer that I've been a Stardockian. I still pay for my subscription so I can be honest with myself. I feel your pain.
Did I miss anything?
Yes, you go into desktopx builder mode, after disconnecting the internet, open DX in builder mode, right click the icon in the tray, choose List Objects, look for anything weather related and highlight it and delete it. Re connect the internet and all should work. I will be updating my DX themes in the near future.
If you notice though (if you have bought any of our suites with weather widgets), we display accuweathers logo and link.
I'm having no more problems with my zipcode, but i'm still having a little problem, the "location" of the widget don't change, even if I try others zipcodes, it just stuck in NY
Help?
"Did I miss anything?"
The solution posted makes your location the fixed location. So you lose the ability to change locations. If you want to allow the ability to change locations try one of the solutions HERE under Allow ability to change locations.
I don't think that is true, but it certainly don't help. There are still calendars, and meters, system info. lotsa other reasons to use DX besides weather.
This is a perfect opportunity for Stardock and Wincustomize. Future widgets will work as advertised. All T's should be crossed and all I's dotted. I simply can't imagine a widget gallery sans any weather widgets.
YES
lots of user
lots of dx widget creator
lots of customer
lots of money (SD)
Most of wincustomize users don't want to see logo or link on the weather widgets.
If you jump the the screeny section, u will see, most of desktops have custom weather widgets.
DX themes will be half finished, without weather.. ( I think)
Till now we are supported the site, and stardock, or masterskinners, or wbskinners, with lot of work, for made free, customized widgets.
For the accuweather widgies, need logo and links too..so not the best way ( my opinion)....
Yahoo widget free to use anyone, there is no logo on the widgets.
If stardock not want able to help us in this situation, then we have only way to remove all custom weatherwidgets, combined widgets, weather objects, DX themes that incl weather, and say:
Goodbye, and thanks for the fish!
I am a long time user and customer of SD, Wincustomize and the wealth of innovative widgets, skins, and themes created by the unbelievably talented and skilled developers and coders on this site. I have been an IT professional for more years than I am willing to publically admit, but this type of maneuver by weather.com is not surprising, especially in these tough economic times where many services need to maximize income and minimize costs.
Since you must code to fix this, I am just curious why you don't choose the service that SD has a valid license with, Accuweather? When I experienced this issue suddenly on my desktop like everyone else here, I jumped online to this forum, found out the source of the issue, then searched for other weather widgets here, found the "July AccuWeather" widget, installed it and now life is good again on my desktops (5 day forecasts are back). True, I prefer weather.com as a service, but then I also preferred the Betamax to VHS many years ago and I lost out on that one too.
Whatever the consensus for action is in the community, I have a sincere appreciation for all of you and the work you do to develop new content for this site and others, you are all extremely talented and your passion shows in the work you do.
Thanks and keep up the great work!
"My point was that there was only so much that Stardock could do in the best case and this isn't best case. "
You at Stardock certainly have my sympathy. Buying a blanket license might be worth the expense, but it wouldn't help today's widgets, would it? They'd have to be rescripted anyway, would't they? That's why I call it a catastrophe. sViz has a great post on fixes for the brave and competent, but I'm not one of them. I might get desperate enough to try it, but I doubt it. The vast majority of us just use the stuff; we're not artists or coders.
Also, if the license agreement requires the logo and whatever, then somebody did overlook that; it should have been there all along.
As for the widgets being ugly with a logo, I'll stand by that. I go to great lengths to get things looking right, as do the artists, and a logo is like a billboard in a beautiful country scene.

"I don't think that is true, but it certainly don't help. There are still calendars, and meters, system info. lotsa other reasons to use DX besides weather."
I'm pretty sure that weather widgets are the most popular by far, and now there isn't a single usable one available to us. That means that the main reason for most people to use DesktopX has disappeared. A calendar is probably next, but we can use Rainlendar, which is more versatile than most DX calendars. I like sys info, etc., myself, but a lot of people don't. It's not clear to me that Stardock is eager to support DesktopX that much, so if the main practical reason for customers to use it has disappeared, then Stardock will probably become less interested, and it would fade away. That would be a tragedy; it's such a great program, and there's so many clever people writing neat things for it.
Well, for me, and I assume all my users, DesktopX is about themes, not widgets. But I agree, weather will be missed. You say you can get a calendar with rainlendar, well, there are other ways to get weather too.
I mention Rainlendar because there are a lot of skins for it that are theme-consistent. I'm curious about what you are going to do with your themes. Are you thinking of redoing all of them to fix the weather problem?
Well, John, That depends on what the fix is. If I have to put a logo and 5 links in my work, I will update all my themes to have no weather widget. All future themes will be made without weather widgets. Then, in the future, if someone comes up with a good, free, adware free way to give the community a weather script, I will make seperate widgets to match any of my themes and upload them for those who want them. As for now, no weather.
Since we don't know how long this will take, if ever, I am currently working on a windowblind for which I will post a WIP soon. It is my first one, so I dunno when. I will most likely keep making DX themes, just sans weather widgets. I use DX themes for all my shortcuts. All I actually use daily is Windowblinds and a DX theme turned into a widget so I can get it to load at startup, since DX won't. I don't need Object Dock, the start menu, or any other launcher. One of my DX themes, setup correctly, is all that is needed to run windows. Weather is nice, but life goes on without a weather widget.....at least for me.
And here's THE solution to keep using weather.com (well at least to keep widgets OK) but without having to get any Partner ID and License Key
- Load DesktopX Builder
- Before importing your widget, disconnect from/turn off the internet (unplug cable, etc.)
- R-click on the DX Builder icon in your system tray and Import your widget
- R-click on the DX Builder icon and choose List Objects
- Find the "weather_image" object. R-click and choose Edit Script
(If you don't see this object, you are likely using a different version)
- In the script editor, find the line that looks similar to this:
http.Open "GET", "http://xoap.weather.com/weather/local/" & location & "?cc=*&dayf=5" & str_UNITS & str_RANDOM_URL, False
- Replace in that line http://xoap.weather.com/weather/local/ by http://xml.weather.com/weather/local/ , save & apply the script
- R-click on the DX Builder icon and find the "weather_forecaststatus" object. R-click and choose Edit Script
http.Open "GET", "http://xoap.weather.com/search/search?where=" & x, False
- Replace in that line http://xoap.weather.com/search/search?where= by http://xml.weather.com/search/search?where=, save & apply the sript
(you may have to do the same with the second line: http.Open "GET", "http://xoap.weather.com/search/search?where=" & y, False - in case of two locations choice ...)
- This hardcodes NOTHING and the widget goes fine
- Restore your internet connection and test the widget (Use the change location button)
- If all goes okay (and it will), you can now export the widget again.
Funny isn't it ?
Yeah!
That work perfect!
and not just 5 day forecast, but on 10 day too..
..till weather.com don't change...
Well, this is one of the reasons i decided to avoid supporting and buying products from stardock years ago, the lack of continuity in the projecs and the depencency of internet even to install one product you have paid for.
Seems that once anything is changed or a new version of one application is released yo have to send to the trash can all the work you have been doing for years.
Now I have two alternatives either i redownload and rebuild all my almost 150 weather widgets praying for that in the future there are no other changes that make them unusable or definetively i delete all of them from my hard drive.
I am really tired of updates and changes that solve one minior problem but creates lots of other unexpected problems that forces you to take decissions.
I am owner of WB 4.6, IP 3.0, Icon developer, really not much, but today is the day when i definetively say goodbye to stardock. I am really tired of changing an tweaking things just to be up with any little change in an applications that makes yo to go again and again to repair all the work you have been doing for years.
