Hmmm... This more and more reminds me the similar discussions between a few hackers on the some dark places in the internet! We don't hack the TWC site or feeds. We just try to find the easy way to "reanimate" our lovely widgets. No more.
If you want to protect any data you may not publish it on the opened sources because all information that published in the internet becomes available to the public and free for reading or even using. So I don't see any obstacles to use this url.
This is very grim prognosis... So what we must do? Remove all weather widgets from the gallery? Or begin to use the first "fix" which uses ID and KEY?
No ..
Zu, you need some some optimism..
Xml WILL WORK alltime
Everyone have to say a prayer ...
... and send me 50 cents
This will require all end users to have their own ID and Key. Which will be more trouble than the end user will want to do.
That's great. Thanks a lot
That's what I'm afraid of.
Looks like those are our only options. Even if they don't remove the xml feed in the near future, we do have to anticipate that there will be changes down the road for whatever reason (maybe they'll change the layout of the feed, what stuff is included, or even the entire url string.)
People get signed up for all kinds of things these days. Getting subscribing to the feed is a relatively painless process and it's a one-time deal. Heck, we all did it when the widgets stopped working.
I don't want to have a repeat of this fiasco in future; that's why, barring a reasonable long-term alternative, I'm trying to work on a widget that complies with the TWC rules to date, and which uses an external script that can be replaced easily by the user.
So far, it's not so bad:
From now on, if my stuff is hooking out to the internet for anything, I am using an external script.
Not to mention the fact that they will have to edit scripts. I have tested over a hundred themes, and still won't go there, lol.
I think the more casual user will just avoid all DX Themes and widgets. Even after repairs are made, the damage will already be done.
COOL! I think people will be finally happy!
P.S. And now imagine the same box with TWC Logo! This is one more question to DesktopX Developer Team. Where is a possibility to put some image or icon onto DesktopX.Form?
Looks good, Eve.
This may work, but I say this. In answer to the statement that signing up is free and painless. When I was having my nickname problems here and was uploading at TSS, I had complaints that you had to sign up and register to download from TSS. You don't now, that has changed, but the fact is, a lot of ends users won't use it if they have to sign up. I think my future skins will have no weather integrated, but will have a free standing weather widget as a seperate object/download/part if the end user wants to use it and wants to sign up. This way, any future changes will not cause a redo of all my themes.
If the ID and key are stored in the registry in a agreed upon key any widgit could use that and make life easier for the end user.
Now that seems like a really sensible thing to do.
As I was looking at their signup page, I wasn't sure if they really wanted the end users to create the user account, or instead if they wanted the program creator to create the user account and point their programs to it (which seems like you'd want to limit these to gadgets instead of widgets). That might be something you'd want to get clarified before you put a bunch of time in on it.
Im sure this was gone over but i havent read ALL this. ObjectDock has a weather Docklet icon that gives a 5 day forcast, and if you click to go to there website, it has humidity and wind... so if this is used so freely, why dosent everyone just update to that? Because it seems to me, that nearly every good widget and theme has weather, and they all give that annoying zip error that never goes away unless you turn off the widget or theme.
or possably update them with no weather at all so a puttz like me can use them and just have my weather docklet on its own little dock in the corner
I just changed the link in my modded copy of "Dark Vista" Desktop and the XML link worked. I changed one line in the weather script. Looks like I'll have to do the simple task of chaging it in all the other desktops I have.
If it fails, it fails. But for now we have an alternative and it works. So we can hope that they don't discover our circumvention of things. Be well!

Lynx = Souped up Wildcat.
just seems wired that i can use it.. but i cant use it.. for the same thing on the same computer. Altho thinking about it i payed for objectdock plus and the weather comes with it.
I only register somewhere if I absolutely have to. I don't want to mess with scripts, either. I agree that the casual user will probably just say forget it. Maybe Jim's idea of excluding the weather widget from themes might be the most practical solution to take care of future situations like this. For what it's worth, I've just tried Bilbo's updated Krome widget, and it's working fine, for now at least--no logo. It's here: http://www.skinnalicious.net/modules/wfdownloads/singlefile.php?cid=12&lid=1872

Will you not have to change the Zip Code entry into something else for international users?

I tried downloading SD Weatherlab, and got a 404, file not found. Maybe it's in moderation.
Yes, hence I am about to release my first weather free theme, Slimmer DX. I have updated a few skins with Zu's notice from the other post, with a few tweaks by me. I will soon start updating all my themes to have no weather, it will take time and having to be moderated will make that process even slower, but it has to be done.
Since this is a global problem, can we maybe bypass moderation for this "weather fixing"? Probably not, just an idea.
I've had that error since last week. I've tried un & re-installing the SD Weather 3.05 widget and it didn't help. Other widgets have had the same problem. So it appears that i'm not the only one with this problem...
