I came home tonight and I had windows updates to install which included Microsoft explorer 8. I accepted the changes like usual. Once the computer rebooted and I tried to open a new page I got the error message Internet explorer cannot open web page.
I have a DSL with a router. My wireless laptop with Vista works fine. My second pc with XP works fine My first pc with XP service pact 3 is the one causing problems. What can I do to fix this problem? I'm not very good with troubleshooting this kind of problem. I know my internet connection is ok. It as to be a setting within internet explorer but I do not know what. I do recall when I installed my router I had to make an adjustmetn in explorer to make it work but I forget what I did back then.
Anybody have a thought?
Thanks
I don't know your network, but some things to try with IE 8.
Make sure you really do have an internet connection. Start Sins or another browser, or some other game, see if it connects. If it doesn't, reboot. You rebooted at the install, but sometimes changes remain pending for some reason. Won't hurt to reboot again.
If still no joy, you can then open a command prompt from Start, All Programs, Accessories. Type ipconfig in the mysterious land of command line darkness and hit Return. You should see info on your connections that is arcane, but nothing should say service unavailable.
In IE 8 itself, Tools Menu (press Alt) if you don't see it. Then Internet Options. go to the Connections tab, and click on LAN settings. Here it gets tricky because I do not know if DSL counts as a dialup connection. Maybe someone else does. Won't hurt to try Auto Detect.
The Setup command on the connections tab one layer back would setup your internet connection afresh, but I can't think why or how updating to SP3 would have changed the internet connections in the first place. Try this last.
My internet works fine. That much I know. I can start MSN and my two other pc work fine. I just don't get it.
It seems that explorer 8 as major problem with lots of pc. I uninstalled it and went back to 7 and now it works fine.
How is one suppose to install a new browser if your browser does not wrok anyway?
And if anybody know how to fix the 8 problem please feel free to let me know.
You might consider installing Firefox 3.5 in case there are problems in the future.
Agreed. Firefox is much superior to IE, and IE7 has been security problems that were addressed in v8. Going back to 7 isn't the correct response imo. I highly recommend Firefox, or a different browser if you'd like, but FF, with it's addons is where to be.
Ok thanks for the information. I will install it tonight then.
I love you guys!
Seems like everone else beat me to it, but my advice would also have been: Get rid of Internet Exploder and install Firefox 3.5.
Any chance you have firewall software installed that is blocking IE8? Most firewall software would ask first, but that would depend on the settings in the software.
Also, there is the "work offline" setting most browsers have, but normally the window that pops up would say something to that effect while attempting to browse, I think.
As others have suggested, going with Firefox is probably your best bet. Just giving some tips in case you are like many of us, and want it to work even if you have another solution.
There is also Opera and Google Chrome. Having a few extra internet browsers wouldn't hurt. There might be some features that one has that the other doesn't.
-I find that IE 8 doesn't work well.-I find that Firefox doesn't save webpages very well.-I find that Opera doesn't let me have multiple windows of it open very well (for instance 1 window for Elemental forum tabs, another for Amazon.com tabs). It'll open a new tab if I tried to do so.-I find that Google Chrome seems like an internet browser with kiddy wheels and doesn't give you much control over it.
Overkill for most people.
IE8 works great on every machine I've installed it on (seven so far,) but Firefox is definately easier to use (with the automatic logins and such.) My aunt on dialup had problems with IE8, but I suspect it was because the first time you run it it probably has to update its anti-phishing and whatever info. IE7 had similar stuff going on, just less in depth. Could've been a different problem entirely though, since she was using security software noone has ever heard of anyway. Heh.
Unfortunately, IE8 and some older plugins don't necessarily work well together. But I can't really give youy much for advice that hasn't been said. wilebill pointed out something fairly important...if the Connections info is off it can really screw you over.
Anyvey, I'm off.
What is weird is that my tow desktop computers are side by side in the computer room. I've upgraded both pc. The first one works great and the other does not. I compared the settings and they are both the same yet my second pc browser does not work.
I really do not get it.
