looks awesome
question about "cloaking" :
so other factions will still see the cloaked ships but cant fire on them like the mines ? unless they have a "de-cloak-ship" with them?
The cloak works like this.. You cant see the ship Just like you cant see the mines, but... You will see them on the empire window, and when you zoom out until it turns into an icon. Basically its cloaked but you know its there. Like how in "Balance of Terror" It was invisable to the eye. However they could see the ships sensor shadow, but couldnt get a weapon lock on her. Which is why they used proximity weapons that did AoE damage. Like depth charges. In sins you wont be able to fire on a cloaked ship, and it cant fire on you. It can move, and jump though i dont advise it because it will suck your AM dry.
I agree on the no bird beaks, thing.
Instead, I think It should look something like an eagle's roost, or at least have elements of where they are often found. give it a look similar to a cliff, sharp angles, docks on an underside, probably weapons emplacements on the high edges.
Remember, in TNG they could do a tachyon pulse which forced cloaked ships to decloak, making them vulnerable.
Actually, it didn't decloak, if I remember correctly, Data fire a torpedo to show that is is there, but it didn't decloak
I LOVE that model for the Romulan Space Station Major. I like the bottom portion that has the bird talon clutching the orb (I am guessing that the orb would be green and glowing, kinda like the old icon that used to be in the initial post). I can see what you were talking about with "mix of old and new", since it looks like a coliseum built atop one of the space stations from the Starship Troopers movie (I believe the one they showed was called "Ticonderoga"). I don't think it's a bad idea to stick with this general shape, because it seems to fit the motif for all the previous factions stations.
i gotta say i have been into star trek since my uncle took me to see search for spock and so i grew up with the movies first and tng/ds9 2nd(i don't mention voyager or enterprise cause...c'mon...really?)and i gotta say imo the soveirgn class is the best looking ship design they have had.but then i love the defiant's design as well which many people hate on.i love that it looks so vastly different from the rest of the other models.and i dunno...something about both ship designs says major advancement technologically.that's the only thing i liked about voyager...i dug the ship.show was pants.
Sounds awesome. A couple thoughts, based on what you've told us about the cloak:
The big incentive for the cations with a cloak will be to warp a fleet into somebody's star system that has a station while cloaked, get into weapons range (of the cloaked ships), and and decloak for a bombing run on the station. That's all well and good, but it may be a good idea to make sure that the actual "cloaking" part of the cloak ability also takes a lump sum of antimatter vice just slowly draining it. This will keep people from making one bombing run on the station, cloaking, and repeating when ships are in position.
I base this on my beta testing of the Star Wars Mod, Sins of a Galactic Empire. One of the biggest problems (against human players, anyway) is that some ships can do a devastating missile attack, which costs anti-matter. As a ballancing method, the attack costs enough anti-matter that it can't be performed right after you jump into a system due to the anti-matter/jump penalty. (if you upgrade your anti-matter regen/max and the reduction in antimatter per jump you can do it pretty soon after jumping, but not right away).
I only offer this up to avoid a silly imbalance in favor of the Roms once the mod first hits the streets that would have to be fixed in the first patch. I'm really looking forward to playing it.
Or you could have the stations detect cloaked ships...
G-ADM_Prawn is a romulans hater
sure used to klink's op'nes
Many options will be considered for the cloak. Understand cloak will be a WiP. So dont expect it to be "perfect" when 0.4E hits the web. We are going to try the drain antimatter option first, and see how that goes. The lump sum option does have merit, and we will consider that if the over time drain doesnt work out like we plan. The most important thing is we do NOT want cloak to stay on constantly, because it will be abused beyond belief. If i can think it someone else will do it. It would be pretty annoying if someone just sat cloaked in your grav well taunting you, and you couldnt do anything about it (unless you had a de-cloaker). Lets see how this works out before we make structures able to de-cloak ships. The Sins AI still does some very stupid things no matter how much you micro. Like make b-lines for the nearest asteroid, or building only to get stuck. With dynamic movement they now make b-lines for the planet only to get stuck :/
The drain over time option uses quite a bit of AM. Plus it ensures someone doesnt cloak then sit still in a grav well cloaked, because sooner, or later the AM will run dry, and he is forced to de-cloak. This means attacks will have to be timed, and managed very carefully. I also want to avoid the decloak, shoot, re-cloak.. rinse and repeat till ship/structure is dead without chance to retaliate.
For the Romulans i picture this scenario. Just before an attack fleet cloaks, then jumps they arrive in Feds grav well. Feds say "oh shit! Romulans are here, and we cant get a lock". Feds spearhead a decloaker if they have one, and pick off the few ships it can decloak. Rommies de-cloak, and chaos begins.
For the Klingons i picture this.. The Klingon cloak is not as advanced as the Romulan cloak. Klingon cloak will use more AM than a Romulan cloak. Not all klingon ships will have cloak. Klingons usually decloak to herald an attack as soon as they arrive in a grav well. If they even cloak at all before the battle. They think sneak attacks are a dishonorable tactic. However they will cloak to disengage, and retreat from a battle going very wrong. How you use the cloak it is up to you.
IMO the series and movies broke their own rules (which were being made up as they went along) with the Klingons. For example Chang's fire while cloaked B'rel... OK. ANY Klingon Warrior with a sense of Honor wouldnt even board that ship let alone fight in it. Did Chang like Duras have no honor? We know he went rogue, but he fought like a Romulan free from retribution hidden in the shadows. That is not the Klingon way. A true warrior would have shown himself, and if the battle went badly there is no dishonor in retreat as long as it serves a greater purpose.
well there is a huge discrapency between the klingon image they give themselves and reality (not the real reality )
i think that was coverd in ds9, when worf nearly became chancelor.
Very true. Also, don't forget Worf's explanation of Klingon cloaking strategies in Way of the Warrior. Referring to Klingon ships laying in wait near ship wreckage should any enemies come seeking survivors, he says that nothing is more honorable in war than victory. Perhaps it all begins to change with Martok as High Chancelor, but I suspect that, for the Klingons of the late 24th century at least, Honor is more of an ends justify the means kind of thing so long as battle is involved.
I keep getting mini dumps on the most recent version. Any news as to what is causing this? I updated to that version...uh...but now can't play.
I get mini dumps aswell still good WIP though. Anyways why would you continuisly switch mod support from expansion to expansion? The mod will not reach full potentional until Stardock finishes with expansions if you continue to switch like this. Just leave it on Entrenchment or whichever expansion you want
@both above me:
afaik the posted version is not the rebuild which should be stable, but the converted old version so it is supposed to crash.
The Romulan SB looks fantastic, although a bit small.
i know the warbird is a massive ship, but Federation SB's could encompass a ship as large as a warbird entirely within itself (depending from which angle you look at the door from i guess, but still)
i know it looks really cool, but it looks to me like its sized more like an outpost or Forward Command Center than a full blown starbase...
also, im sure its not possible, but to see a ship dock with a structure in Sins would be FREAKING FANTASTIC!!
0.3e.102 was the converted update of the mod for 1.041. It works for some, but not for others. Which is the only reason we keep it online. It can get unstable. Instead of pulling our hair out trying to fix it, we started over again from scratch. Plus we arent releasing anything until the original four mod factions before entrenchment was released (feds, klinks, rommies, and dominion) are back in the mod and working. Borg will be added in a later update, because they will be the final playable faction, and we can focus soley on them.
Things are slow right now due to the Holidays, and RL. I am in work on fixing, and finishing the UI. Plus some model tweaks. Jaylrpcs is in work on researches and abilities. Darkshimmer said he would re-balance the Dominion for us. No doubt this will take a while.
Diplomacy IS the final expansion. From what i have seen of it so far bringing it there will be a cakewalk compared to converting from original sins to entrenchment.
Ok, well...let me ask this; does anyone know if the mini-dumps are the result of a problem with the modeling/meshes, or the scripting files? If it is just a problem with the scripting files, I can probably replace them with the old scripting files and fix the dump. I just wanted to get this going again, while I wait....
I have found that to cut down on the number of dumps you get in the old version, simply don't play against the Federation AI. Everytime I played with them in that version I was headed to the desktop at warp speed.
I love the look of that Romulans starbase. I like to imagine a Romulan promenade (DS9-esque)
Also, as for Chang, I think his tactis fit who he is. It was a very dishonerable way to fight, but he was such a dishonorable Klingon. He colluded with rouge Romulan and Starfleet officers to assassinate the Chancellor he is supposed to serve! He betrayed the Empire, and serving the Empire is the ultimate duty of a Klingon soldier
He might have looked Klingon, but he's got some green blood in him (metaphorically)
The minidumps from 0.3e.102 are because there are older original sins files mixed in with new entrenchment files. 9 of 10 dumps start with a Dynamic vector error which always heralds a dump. The problem was that dev.exe is that it does not even hint at which file is causing the problem. Dynamic vector errors mean that sins cant read a certain file header. Usually because it is an older version file. That is what the dev's told me, and thats why the old 0.3e series got scrapped. It has nothing to do with the meshes. Its all in the gameinfo, window, particle, and pipeline effect folders. It was also a learning experience for us, because now we KNOW we cant use older original sins files in the mod. Plus i think we did hit a few hardcode limits as well. The older version still loads vanilla tech, phase, and psi on top of the mod factions even though you cant select the vanilla factions. The files are there, and so are the entrys in the manifest. 0.4e completely removes the vanilla factions, and any reference to them in the manifests. The only files it pulls from original sins are what it needs for the game to run. All of the factions gameinfo, and effects are modded. 0.4e now uses less ram to run than original sins.
So to answer your question about 0.3e.102, Yes it is all in the scripting that is causing the problems.
The Klinks have their share of "bad guys" so to speak. Just like the feds had their share of officers that wanted to play god, usurp authority, or just plain went psycho.
The Romulans idea of a "bad guy" would probably be a defector.
Odo was the only "good" founder. The rest of the Dominion are geneticly engineered "robots" (Vorta, Jem hadar). The Breen we still dont know much of anything about them. The Cardassains are an example of ambition backfiring in their face. The masters became the slaves.
Remember the Next Generation episode with Spock??? Based on that I suppose a Romulan "Bad Guy" would probably be someone who supports re-unification with Vulcun.
I wonder... does anyone know who has the most power in the romulan empire?
since the romulans are basd on the roman republic i would say nobody (as a person). if you count institutions than the senate.
