I've noticed something somewhat disturbing at E3 this year, at least from all the coverage I've seen: No new RTS's announced at all. In fact none of the sites I've looked at even had a strategy section. The only RTS I know of that's in developement right now is Starcraft 2, that's it. Hopefully SC2 will be worth 3 or 4 RTS's, but still this has me a bit worried, is the genre dying out? I hoped that Sins would make enough of a splash that there would be imitators, but maybe not?
If you guys could ease my mind by letting me know of some stuff I may have missed I'd really apreciate it .
I don't know much about RTSs, but the DoTA genre seems to be getting a bunch of games.
Well, unless it sold really poorly, I strongly suspect THQ is going to be putting some work into sequels/expansion packs for DoW2.
I seem to recall seeing something about a Supreme Commander 2, and a WWII game called R.U.S.E., but I can't think of anything else off the top of my head.
Yes R.U.S.E is coming out in 2009-2010. I am looking forward to it. Its made by Eugen Systems, they're the same developpers that created Act of War - Direct Action and Act of War - High Treason.
Yeah, I heard something about Supreme Commander 2 also. Also, keep in mind that there are two more expansions planned for SoaSE (last I checked, at least).
The genre is in a bit of a lull, though. This is because computer gaming has been losing ground to console gaming for quite some time. I'm hoping that the computer gaming industry can make a someback here soon, because all of my favs are on the computer.
Here's to hoping for HW3
I wish they'd make a good sequel to Empire Earth. I mean technically, they have 2 sequels, but they're nothing like the original, and frankly, they suck. A lot.
That game really made it obvious that the best way to keep RTS's going for a long time is to provide a good way to make scenarios and the like.
I've had this discussion before on other forums. I think it's very premature to say that the RTS genre is dying.
Most people are well aware of the "migration" towards consoles, but the RTS genre has been the glaring exception. I personally think that the kind of gamer who likes RTS is just a different beast from the kinds of gamers that are on the consoles. I think the console-gamer is epitomized by the Yahtzee Croshaw of Zero Punctuation fame; buy new games at frequent intervals, play them to their end, then take them back to the store for a trade-in. The RTS gamer is more likely to play a game for months on end, if not for years. We get involved in community projects, like modding and map-making, things that aren't feasible on many console titles and require direct developer support.
With that in mind, I don't think the RTS genre is dying so much as consolidating. There are fewer titles, but the titles I see are more promising. I thought that Supreme Commander was the only good RTS of 2007, and Sins of a Solar Empire was the only good RTS of 2008. You only need one good RTS in 2009 and 2010 for me to say the genre is holding firm. On the other hand, with less competition, lesser-known titles have more opportunity to get out there and succeed. I think that if good developers take the initiative and release some top-notch games, this could be a golden age for RTS. If Sins of a Solar Empire and Supreme Commander are indicative of the genre's decline, then frankly it's the best thing that ever happened to it!
Right now, I'm closely following Starcraft 2, Achron, and Dawn of Fantasy.
EE is dead, sorry to say. EE3 was such an utter failure that the brand has lost its credibility. There are hardcore fans who will always yearn for a sequel, but no one is actually going to sink money into a franchise tainted by such a horrendous flop.
RUSE sounds and looks insane!
There's another game called 'Order of War'. It's a WWII WiC lookalike. But not much info is available on how exactly it plays. Published by Square Enix.

I think it was just one the those time's where developers are working on projects rather than unveiling them right then.
If one RTS needs a sequel, that's Homerworld 2. Another "ain't gonna happen" case.
I just read a rumour about C&C 4. The rumour claims the game will also have RPG features. I'd guess even more such features than WC3... But then C&C series have been pretty much failures after EA started making them.
Starcraft 2 will be good storywise... (most likely at least), i just fear the gameplay, and especially MP gameplay will be horrible reflex, quickness and optimization fest just like Warcraft 3.
honestly all of Blizzards RTS's are clickfests in multiplayer, which is why i usually play UMS games.
