On September, if you have not yet been informed, is the official launch date of what many consider Demigod's main competition in the strategy-action genre, League of Legends (yes, I'm aware its acronym is LOL). Some of us, from what I'm hearing round these forums, are just transiently playing Demigod to fill the void until the release date of League of Legends. I can see that many demigod players currently frustrated by issues with Pantheon, Skirmish, buggy netcode (although semi-fixed), and overall small player base will be extremely tempted to make the switch between games. Although these players may, in actuality, be few and far between, I can easily see a couple hundred US Demigod regulars transition into LoL. This will further increase the problem of Demigod's shrinking fan base (most games that pop up on Customs are EU/RUS/FR now), causing more people to switch. Essentially, what may start out as a relatively small, low-key transition may acculmulate in magnitude, which does not bode well for us Demigod stalwarts here.
Personally, I believe that we (not us, we, grammar nazi here) fans here on the Stardocks boards should push for IGN, Gamespot, 1UP, and PC Gamer (the biggies in PC gaming media) to conduct a post-mortem on the state of Demigod after the massively improved multiplayer experience in Demigod. Mobbing a decent amount of well-written, paragraph long suggestions to these websites' inboxes should generate a response of some kind. Hell, maybe we should even get the good folks at SD to submit a few requests for a post-patch summary. I honestly believe that anything SD asks for the gaming media will oblige to, since EVERYBODY loves SD so much . Honestly, that 65 from GS, C from 1UP, and 75 from IGN were totally not fair, and advertising Demigod's awesomeness on PC Gamer won't hurt much either. To all IGN readers out there, maybe we should get Matt Casamassina to beg his readers to buy the game again.
So, in short, break out your typing hands and get writing! A letter to Gamespot, 1UP, IGN, and PC Gamer are in order, for the good of Demigod and the entire world! (No, that was not a joke) Maybe a letter to Frogboy as well to also encourage him to follow suit, because hey, who doesn't worship him?
Let's go out and help Demigod!
I for one don't like the "Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA)" name. First, MOBA sounds odd and second, "Multiplayer Online Battle Arena" could be describing any mp pvp game, from CS, Quake or UT to Guild Wars and such. Just my 2 cents.
moba is such a wider variety it isn't really a genre more like a class like this game exteel is a mmofps but i would say it also comes under moba
but the last information i got about the demis were pics of concept art about 8 weeks ago so more info about the demis would be nice
Moba is fine. A standard should be set. Demigod didn't really put themselves in any genre. LoL calls themselves a moba game so Demigod should be in that category as well to help grow the genre.
When wolf3d, duke, doom first came out, they weren't call fps. They didn't really have a category or genre. People call them doom clones just like we call Demigod a dota clone.
Having a genre name moba would help all these games grow.
Ding Ding, you got it blitz, that's the idea. The genre can't grow if there's no name for it.
It's not a standard RTS game, nor is it a standard RPG title, nor is it a standard MMORPG which it so has since all summoners/players gain levels through playing. It has it's own sublass of genre, MOBA.
i would say the title rps is more apropriate
For the longest time I didn't know what MOBA stood for. Finally cleared that up, thanks.
I had always called them DoTA-ish games but moba is better
We're going off-topic here, but I for one agree with the editor against the Wikipedia entry. Wikipedia is meant to be used to describe something established, not to be used in ORDER to establish a term. I'm afraid MOBA is not a popular enough term yet. And, like Dead Ghost said, it's not really quite right, as MOBA can describe something like Quake or Unreal Tournament or even TF2. Even amongst those of us reading here, it's iffy.
Third-person Strategy or Role-Playing Strategy fit the description much better. RPS has my vote. Heck, I'll even go with Role-Playing Strategy Arena Game or something.
This is not to say that MOBA could become the term in the future.
More on topic: Dunno if most of you are aware that GPG has its own forums where it takes ideas on Demigods and stuff.
http://forums.gaspowered.com/
Not defending them, though. I think there really should be ONE forums (this one, as it's the official one of the official website).
I don't agree with adding "Role-playing" to any game genre, simply because you play a role in every game on the market. You could call FPS games role playing shooters, but people don't because "role playing" is associated with the RPG genre. "Third person" to me implies a third person chasecam, such as in Max Payne, so I don't agree with that either. I'm happy to go with MOBA since it disassociates itself from the genres from which is is derived: RTS and CRPG, so there is never going to be any confusion.
Role playing strategy could describe a game like Baldur's Gate, or the original Fallout games.
I think the "online" in MOBA is just added for ease of vocalisation though
I see no reason why people shouldn't discuss a GPG game on the GPG forums.
Posting on this forum anything that isn't praise for DG, GPG, SD or Frogboy is quite obviously 'obnoxious' (quoth Frogboy).
Obviously we players (who paid good hard earned dollars) who aren't 100% satisfied with DG and the (so-called) post-release support, should just stop complaining OR posting our thoughts and opinions because we might kill some of the fluffy pink elephants that float around in the wonderful world of Brad Wardell.
Even if you pose your thoughts as a question, begging for others opinons and thoughts you will be mis-represented by statements such as: "Just today someone was arguing how Demigod is "dead". EVEN if in said thoughts you actually add a compliment to the staff for 'communication and not just blind sighting the community'. EVEN if you add praise for the game and share your exitement for it and how the reason you are frustrated is because of a (maybe in some opinions mis-represented) percieved lack of tangible on-going support you will still be labeled a troll, a troble maker and obnoxious.
I hope that your business plan/model includes alienating and abusing long-term supportive customers so they lose respect for your professional integrity Brad, beacuse if so. You've succeded.
Once again I will say that I think SD have done a great job to try and keep a half-finished game afloat when the people who own and designed it give the community a perception of not giving a crap.Standing up for GPG against your customers is such a bad public relations stategy. Instead of getting all huffy when someone mentions a lack of GPG support, maybe you should actually SEE the point and try adn make GPG accountable.
I humbly appologize for being forthcoming about a game that should be one of the big titles that is played and spoken of for years and is instead plagued with a stima of 'not-complete'.
Gah...
gamers need to drop the whole "fail at release and fail for all time!!!" mentality
it doesnt do us any favours. i should know, ive played a number of non world of warcraft mmos over the past 2 years that have died out due to the above concept
Including both multiplayer and online seems pretty redundant to me (MMORPG was the world's worst genre name, it's so bad people hardly even use the full acronym anymore, there's no need to take cues from them) and battle doesn't really do much to help the description either.
I like Tactical Multiplayer Arena (TMA) more, it's more concise with a less awkward acronym.
Well, MMO isn't quite that horrible, albiet it is long winded. Games like Call of Duty 4 are Multiplayer games, however they're not 'online' as they have an offline component. Games like Second Life aren't multiplayer as such, however they're online online. So, MMO lets people know that it's a multiplayer game, totally online with no singleplayer component and.. er.. it's massive!
There's numerous descriptions you can use for this sub-genre:
All of them viable, and yet at the end of the day I think the 'DotA' tag is going to stick to a large degree.
That brings up a prime example of what people THINK things should be called, and what ENDS UP being popular labels. Almost everyone you ask will tell you that Baldur's Gate and Fallout are RPG. And of course "RTS" can be describe other things as well, as almost everything NOT turn-based requiring some sort of strategy can be considered RTS.
Maybe Multiplayer Role-Playing Strategy, haha. I dunno. But my point was that popular gaming labels will evolve themselves over time. I mean, who really remembers the person that coined RPG?
My point about the GPG forums is that from a project point of view, having two forums is a bad idea. Anyone who's worked on a joint project (which is what Demigod is) would understand. There's no reason why there should be two separate "official" forums.
"Dota-style" is what I use and will continue to use.
everything in the english language can be discribed as something else but moba could be put into anything litrally
cod 4 is moba
half life
all mmos
some simulators
some straergys
moba can be put into every pretty much but rps role playing stratergy u can't put it with just anything can't be put with most fps's because most fps's don't use much stratergy
can't put it with most role playing games because most of them are like the harry potter games
and u can't put it with simulators
some mmos u can i can think off 2 of the top of my head
massive online battle arena is too much off a wide title to be a genre it is kinda like say this is rock music when there are like 10 subsections of rock
role playing strategy can also be used for any multiplayer game.
You're playing the role of a unit in a larger squad. Because there's many units, there's strategy.
cod is rps,
counterstrike is rps, etc
The name of the "genre" doesn't have to be completely exclusive to that game's type of play.
consider rts, real time strategy. Pretty much any multiplayer game has strategy involved. If the game's not turn based it's in real time.
OH SHIT! EVERY MULTIPLAYER GAME IS AN RTS!
I'm now declaring the new name for current RTS-games to be called RTSWYAACOMUF
"real time strategy where you are a commander overseeing many units on the field."
Because god forbid there's any overlap
Guys, i'm pretty sure that the name of the genre it's not the most important thing right now...Can we move on now please?
i think it is funny he but the a in the rtwswyaacomuf but forgot the on the
This is an amazingly, well-thought conversation by many. I'd like to throw my thoughts into the mix:
@Frogboy
-I agree with your long-term business model. Longevity works. Changing business models is important. As an example, Most of the well-know competitive gaming organizations were PC based. We (vVv Gaming) reversed the model. We started on Console, and introduced our brand identity to a younger audience, hence when they moved to PC, they would already be familiar with our brand (vVv Gaming www.vvv-gaming.com). Point being, you're making the right choice.
-I disagree with your parental overtones. There are better ways to build community than dismissing critics. I should know, I feel we have one of the best competitive communities at vVv Gaming. Come flame our forums, we'll show you
-I agree with your argument about "what kills what." That thinking is unrealsitic. It's like looking for a WoW killer or a CoD destroyer. Not gonna happen.
@Hunter: Keep up the good work. I think Wiki is just being silly. It's a debate you will eventually win. Get the Gaming Press to cover it, and the rest will follow.
I'm here to say that vVv Gaming fully supports this game. We've been playing with it, looking at balance, exploring maps, and we feel this game has a huge amount of competitive potential. We actually are going to hold a tournament for the game, when it is ready and 1.1 helps a lot. ESL already has a 1v1 and 3v3 settings.
Actually, if any of you feel you are the best, interested in a competitive community, check us out. We'd like to be known for having the best demigod players.
Bottom line: I am very optimistic about the game's future. I know our staff and sponsors feel the same, as we have budget for Demigod players. Yes, bad launch, but the fundamentals are amazing. I encourage people to continue to play and support its development and growth.
