On September, if you have not yet been informed, is the official launch date of what many consider Demigod's main competition in the strategy-action genre, League of Legends (yes, I'm aware its acronym is LOL). Some of us, from what I'm hearing round these forums, are just transiently playing Demigod to fill the void until the release date of League of Legends. I can see that many demigod players currently frustrated by issues with Pantheon, Skirmish, buggy netcode (although semi-fixed), and overall small player base will be extremely tempted to make the switch between games. Although these players may, in actuality, be few and far between, I can easily see a couple hundred US Demigod regulars transition into LoL. This will further increase the problem of Demigod's shrinking fan base (most games that pop up on Customs are EU/RUS/FR now), causing more people to switch. Essentially, what may start out as a relatively small, low-key transition may acculmulate in magnitude, which does not bode well for us Demigod stalwarts here.
Personally, I believe that we (not us, we, grammar nazi here) fans here on the Stardocks boards should push for IGN, Gamespot, 1UP, and PC Gamer (the biggies in PC gaming media) to conduct a post-mortem on the state of Demigod after the massively improved multiplayer experience in Demigod. Mobbing a decent amount of well-written, paragraph long suggestions to these websites' inboxes should generate a response of some kind. Hell, maybe we should even get the good folks at SD to submit a few requests for a post-patch summary. I honestly believe that anything SD asks for the gaming media will oblige to, since EVERYBODY loves SD so much . Honestly, that 65 from GS, C from 1UP, and 75 from IGN were totally not fair, and advertising Demigod's awesomeness on PC Gamer won't hurt much either. To all IGN readers out there, maybe we should get Matt Casamassina to beg his readers to buy the game again.
So, in short, break out your typing hands and get writing! A letter to Gamespot, 1UP, IGN, and PC Gamer are in order, for the good of Demigod and the entire world! (No, that was not a joke) Maybe a letter to Frogboy as well to also encourage him to follow suit, because hey, who doesn't worship him?
Let's go out and help Demigod!
Several "small" examples:
- Counter Strike
- Desert Combat
- Team Fortress Classic
As an example, cataract is 90MB, including textures, effects, and meshes. Most of the space is taken up by giant textures, which are pretty unnecessary imo, you could easily make a make that looked ok without all the fancy stuff going on around it. Sure the water features looks nice, but I wouldnt bother with it initially if I were making a map.
Unfortunately, we can't import meshes properly at the moment, we need a GR2 exporter and possibly some other things from GPG.
And I don't care about Pantheon, stats/ranks mean nothing in team games. I play custom because that way I can play premade vs premade and have a hard but competitive game. It's more fun that way. If you want to play custom maps you will probably need to play custom.
And yeah maxxy, "Modding and multiplayer rarely goes together"...gawd. DotA isn't a mod or anything.
EDIT: an example of what can already be done quite easily using the mod system:
You can tie any building to a war rank increase, which could mean you add more portals at higher war ranks, so that play escalates as the game progresses, as well as adding more defensive structures to knock down at later levels. Consider you can never get the corner tower back on Cataract, what would the game be like if you added an archer tower there at WR5? By modding we can explore gameplay modifications like this easily, some of them will be fun, some of them wont, but discounting them all because you're too narrow minded to see the benfit is just stupid.
If you like the game as is, go play it, but there are a number of people who are keen to play around with the mechanics and see what we can make. This benefits any and all who are prepared to try.
Guys- you say that people will be sick of playing the same old demigods on the same old maps, which may be true. However, you're missing out on what gives the game some real longevity besides plaayer advancement: welcome to an addiction called favor items. There are so many useful ones out there that you wish you could experiment with that it could keep you reeled in Demigod for a decent amount of time.
The average Demigod player plays what, 2 to 4 games max per day? Let's assume he plays 3, and wins 2 but loses 1. Winning generates an average of 120 favor, and losing nets you 25. Thats 265 favor accumulated per day. Lets say you want BotF, Cloak of Night, AoT, Poison Dagger, and Swift anklet. That's at least 4000 favor points right there. That's 50 games for the average joe Demigod player, and no ones plays this game everyday. So, favor items give Demigod a bit of a built-in retention mechanism in having favor points.
May I have the honor of lolling at you? I'm glad you chose those fine 3 examples. Oh wait, what's this, they are all FPS games? Yep, you fail.
Dota also a mod? God damn it people, the ignorance is quite irritating. Why are you trying to compare things that in no circumstances can be compared? "Modding" aka. mapping aka. making maps in wc3 or any other blizzard rts is totally different than what other games offer with their modding. Using an example: modding in wc3 is like buying a lego castle, you get all the pieces nicely in one package and then you build the castle from well written instructions. It's easy, simple and everybody can do it. Overly simplified example, the wc3 world editor is much more complex, if you take the time to learn it, but basic princible is that everybody can easily start making their own maps.
Modding in demigod is like collecting random pieces of plastic. First of all you got shitloads of work to shape and create the pieces you need, and then you need to put it all together by yourself without instructions, it's fucking hard and requires lot of work. Work that not many is able to do, and not many can be bothered to learn.
As for the "I don't care about stats", well, it's not about stats! Competitive gaming needs pantheon because it can (when we get this) match your team with other team based on the stats SO you get an opponent that is about same skill level as you. So you saying you don't care about stats mean you don't really give a shit about competitive play, you are fine with your casual shit games with randomers, well, have fun, you already got this now, don't know why the fuck you bothered to post here.
LoL will destroy Demigod.
Just as a note: When an admin views a post it displays on our side whether the person has purchased/registered Demigod.
If League of Legends is unstoppable then I would imagine its advocates wouldn't need to promote it in comments on the Demigod forums. Know what I mean, Somaz?
I for one look forward to League of Legends. Incidentally, there is another Dota type game in development that looks very good too though its name escapes me.
I find it odd, especially given the popularity of Dota, that this emerging genre is so small that only one game can support it.
In other genres, like 4X, we don't feel this strange compulsion to attack other games in the genre. Soren Johnson, the designer of Civilization IV, and I are friends for instance. He was actively involved in helping us during the development of Galactic Civilizations II. He has helped us already in Elemental with our road and river algorithms.
One of my favorite sites, Civfanatics.com has a Galactic Civilizations area.
Similarly, Sins of a Solar Empire and Sword of the Stars are in the same general genre as well and there are plenty of fans of both games and in fact we sell and support Sword of the Stars via Impulse.
So I find it mystifying why there's this us vs. them mentality. Heck, I could imagine a future where a user could have both games installed and monitor custom games and such they want to play and jump into the one that's available.
If anything, you guys should be hoping for many many games of this type, not trying to stamp out "competitors". Games are not like cars.
Been missing in this forums for some time, now...
Anyways currently there are various companies working on games inspired from Dota not just LOL...
There is League of Legends by Riot Games, ofcourse...
There is Heroes of Newerth by S2 Games which Icefrog the current developer of Dota is endorsing himself...
There is Bloodline Champions which recently won best game in the Swedish Game Awards...
So this genre is getting a huge boost...
I agree with Frogboy. I am looking forward to playing both.
Also sorry for the double post but Frogboy I know we have had our diferences in the past but are you, will you be interested in a League of Legends Beta Key by any chance, I will probably have a spare one to give away soon...
So are you interested?
Sorry, it was too much to expect for you to use your fucking brain. And do you know what trolls do? Exactly what you are doing. They don't think and like to stick to words and then make posts such as yours.
I'd love a beta key!
For the most part, I think you're correct. Especially in the case where the game's primary focus is single player. However, multiplayer games are unplayable unless you have people to play against. This may not be a fact, as it's just anecdotal evidence, but from my experience, when "the next big thing" in a genre comes out, the community in other games of the same genre often shrink and the players head to the other game. This doesn't mean that the community dies, but if it's already small, it becomes even smaller.
I used to be a big TA nerd back before starcraft came out. Once SC came out, I had harder times finding MP games and eventually switched to SC. Again, this is just my experience.
On the flip side, if Demigod can differentiate itself from LoL and DoTA enough, it might even get new customers when LoL comes out... possibly because some may not like the hardcoreness of LoL (I'm assuming it'll be hardcore, I really have no idea).
Plus, if demigod can start trickling out some content, and shortly before LoL's release, come out with a nice juicy content expansion, it might help retain fans and get new ones.
I just got angry that you (Frogboy) didn't post in a long time in simple topics like this one
P.S. I'm waiting for the Demigod Demo. Hope it comes out soon.
I just hope there won't be any bugs from this thread in it:
http://forums.demigodthegame.com/356419
Well it sounds like everyone is on the same page!!!
But the real question is WILL THEY DO anything, I am not an avid reader of these forums, I just started posting
Well I looked on Ebay for a friend for Demigod, does anyone want to know what you can get it for off of Ebay?
$16.00 US brand new.
Does that tell anyone anything, that all of these reviews and upcoming new games and so forth have hurt it,
and it's true I havent seen any feedback from the staff, or little at all.
is this game just about sales?
I believe that Demigod will fall to the side, because every company out there will FLOOD the market
with these types of game, it's sad, but it's the truth, I hope that all of us that actually like the game will stick with it
and see if WE as a community can make them make the proper changes........
ON a side note, I will probably buy one of the other DoTa type games as well
I have seen alot of people saying that these games will stomp out demigod.and I just can see where a company would let a project go to dump in such a short period
money or no money if you care about your WORK
and I am curious why is elemental in Demigod forums? I see more posted there then anything
isnt this the DEMIGOD forums, I mean which game are we trying boast here?
I had no idea what LoL was till reading this topic and it actually looks quite good. I love the ideas they have come up with.
Err, not really. Until recently I was using a different account for the forum and for the game so anyone doing that, you have no way of knowing if they own the game or not, am I right?
That said, I don't think LoL will kill anything. September release is suicide for LoL as SCII was announced for end of year. THAT is the big killer app of 2009 in the RTS genre, not some weird looking DoTA.
Even people not playing RTS have been so brainwashed with SCII for the last 12 months they can't wait to get it into their hands. That game is not even out it's already a success.
Now excuse me if I refrain from "sword polishing" duels with you. The way you decide to phrase yourself bores me to tears.
PS: Just so you know, seeing you get pissed off in posts is very amusing. It made me smile knowing that you got annoyed. Cheers for the kodak moment
How good of you to admit that you are just another troll. In the light of this new information, I won't bother giving you anymore replies. But I will have to disappoint you, only time I've been pissed at these forums is when the forums refused to load all other topics except the sticky topics. But keep on smiling, I hear it prolonges your life .
^^
You two remind me of elementary school children. You fight, tease, and belittle each other but in reality you're in love .
Now kiss and make up.
I will definitely buy and play LoL when it comes out. I don't mind the graphics, gameplay is more important. I have old games with shitty gfx that i still play, because of the fun gameplay. And btw, LoL is not a Dota clone. If you want a 1:1 Dota clone, then look for Heroes of Newerth.
Starcraft 2 doesn't matter, it's a totally different type of game. It's like saying that in the fall of 2009, Modern Warfare 2 comes out and the world will end, because no one will play anything else.
Anyway, the future of DG depends entirely on the support from GPG. This game will be simply dead without additionally content released on a monthly base (maximum 2 months between releases). The 2 new demigods are not enough, i'm sorry to say.
I know players from Dota who deleted the game but keep reinstalling it whenever a new patch comes out. LoL and HoN is based on this continuous support, they know that without it, the game will die a lot sooner. Not to mention the focus on community in-game features that Demigod lacks (at the current time, 2 months after release). And as far as i know, they will not be p2p based, so that's another plus in my book.
Demigod has simply too much to recuperate in a timely manner: needs more demigods, more maps, much better UI, community mp features that work, way more reliable 5v5 matches, etc. All other competitors will have this from day 1. This is why i'm so pessimistic about DGs future.
Btw, has anyone a LoL beta key to spare?
Err....Are you insinuating that I haven't bought Demigod? Because, as a matter of fact, I have. I've bought GalCiv 2 as well, for what that's worth.
He was talking to Somaz.
I think he was referring to Somaz.
The depressing thing to me is that LoL is relevant at all. I mean, Demigod is a game developed by a top-tier game studio and distributed and supported by a top-tier publisher. League of Legends looks like its being developed by 7 part-time college students on a cracked copy of Visual Studio.
Don't get me wrong, I love Demigod, loved SoaSE, TA, SupCom, but good lord, this is beyond frustrating.
There are many great features available to you once you register, including:
