On September, if you have not yet been informed, is the official launch date of what many consider Demigod's main competition in the strategy-action genre, League of Legends (yes, I'm aware its acronym is LOL). Some of us, from what I'm hearing round these forums, are just transiently playing Demigod to fill the void until the release date of League of Legends. I can see that many demigod players currently frustrated by issues with Pantheon, Skirmish, buggy netcode (although semi-fixed), and overall small player base will be extremely tempted to make the switch between games. Although these players may, in actuality, be few and far between, I can easily see a couple hundred US Demigod regulars transition into LoL. This will further increase the problem of Demigod's shrinking fan base (most games that pop up on Customs are EU/RUS/FR now), causing more people to switch. Essentially, what may start out as a relatively small, low-key transition may acculmulate in magnitude, which does not bode well for us Demigod stalwarts here.
Personally, I believe that we (not us, we, grammar nazi here) fans here on the Stardocks boards should push for IGN, Gamespot, 1UP, and PC Gamer (the biggies in PC gaming media) to conduct a post-mortem on the state of Demigod after the massively improved multiplayer experience in Demigod. Mobbing a decent amount of well-written, paragraph long suggestions to these websites' inboxes should generate a response of some kind. Hell, maybe we should even get the good folks at SD to submit a few requests for a post-patch summary. I honestly believe that anything SD asks for the gaming media will oblige to, since EVERYBODY loves SD so much . Honestly, that 65 from GS, C from 1UP, and 75 from IGN were totally not fair, and advertising Demigod's awesomeness on PC Gamer won't hurt much either. To all IGN readers out there, maybe we should get Matt Casamassina to beg his readers to buy the game again.
So, in short, break out your typing hands and get writing! A letter to Gamespot, 1UP, IGN, and PC Gamer are in order, for the good of Demigod and the entire world! (No, that was not a joke) Maybe a letter to Frogboy as well to also encourage him to follow suit, because hey, who doesn't worship him?
Let's go out and help Demigod!
You wanna bet that Demigod will not be dead till september 2010 ?
You're sick of playing with the same 8 demigods, well i'm not and i believe there is lot more like me.
you're saying that - "it is fun to play for a while but as all games i have played it gets boring"Well its your problem.
If a game is a good competitive online (Demigod is) it will live long enough. Take for example COD4,it's still huge online, i'm still playing it online (less than before because of demigod ).
I plan to get League of Legends in September but at the same time I hope that doesn't mean I stop playing DemiGod - I suspect they maybe different enough to make both enjoyable in their own way.
I do think it would be a good idea for stardock to ask the reviewers to check it out again when 1.1 and the demo comes out. I love DG and hope it stays around for a long time.
Tals
I'd like to thank the OP for pointing out some competition so that I could check them out. Currently, Demigod is lackluster in areas I feel are important. Will LoL (ha!) be better? I don't know, but from the trailers, it looks more fluid than Demigod. Jury is still out.
Demigod needs new maps (or an editor) and new Demigods before LoL releases, and preferably by the beginning of August, otherwise I think Demigod is going to take a hit when it really can not afford to do so.
i predicted that the game will be void off life by 9th of the 9th 09 and seeing as the 2 new demis are already behind they said they would be out 2 months after release it was release 2 months and 6 days ago
if the new demis arn't here by 06/07/09 then ill proberly be out that would put it a extra 3 weeks onto the last
and if they make the diamond guy a general they are so fucked up
hmm and your comapring a fps to a real time role playing game
man there nothing alike at all i highly doubt that if sd and gpg dont get there act together that u will be here it is going the way of the toilet and it will proberly be flushed it is a great game witha great idea with a great devolping team and a great code team just a absolutely positive shit exacution
i dont know how they could have made it any worse there was bugs in everything and the multi was fucked personally im proberly not going to move to lol but i anit going to stay on demi either ill proberly move onto a new game ohh wait i already have warrior epic
Bugs fixed (most of them i think).
When a game is good competitive online it doesn't matter if itsFPS, RPG, Strategy or whatever.
I agree that this game should be released with more content - DEMIGODS/MAPSfor the price we've payed for it, but we're gonna get 2 more Demigods (maybe more in the future)and who knows maybe some new maps.
TBH, I see the game spiking with 1.1 and the demo release, but I don't see it competing with LoL, they are doing everything to make it a better version of DotA specifically to lower the barrier to entry with skill ratings and good matchups.
It will be interesting to see if the DotA players give the same excuse not to purchase LoL that they gave for Demigod, mainly, "Why would I play Demigod, if I can play DotA for free?"(even though its not free unless they pirated the game and play over Garena.)
Regardless, I don't have any plans in buying LoL at this time, it comes out at a rediculously good PC Gaming time.
Well, League of Legends doesn't really interest me to be honest. If I wanted to play DotA, well, I would. The game is trying to hard to capture the DotA atmosphere - from the extremely basic Hero builds to the art style itself. Demigod went in a different, and to me more appealing, direction than DotA. I didn't buy Demigod because it's DotA, I bought bought Demigod because it's not DotA.
I think people forget that most games go through phases with their community - such as the influx of people who buy new games, finish them, and move on and never return when the game launches. When these people purchase a multiplayer centric title that isn't an MMO, they play for a while and then move on, coming back when new content patches are released. The other players are the ones who play because they enjoy it - they're not here because there's 97 Demigods and 200 Maps, and so playing through all the content takes ages, they're here because they enjoy the game for what it is. I'm one of these people. I'll be here in September, and I'll be here long after.
TBH i cant recommend the game to anyone since its still broken
hell i feel bad now for making my m8 buy the game, like i cheated him somehow
Good competitive games don't stay unpatched with heavy balancing issues...
I think Demigod is already dead.
I've seen so many games dying the last years and it's everytime the same...
Heavy multiplayer games, released as beta, connectivity problems, unbalanced and stay unpatched for months, heavy exploiting and abusing from the community ti kill the fun of others (last 20~ games i tried were 3on2), then, publishers want to hold you with free addons (2 new demigods) and finally less and less response from Publishers till their game is dead....
I really hope Demigod doesn't go this way, but I've seen it too many times the last years...
I know how you are feelin....
Just out of curiosity, what's broken that makes the game completely unplayable?
well i have already moved on to another game and personally i think it would proberly give me more to do then demigod because no matter how u look at it you are playing skirmishes
no matter how many different combernation u do demigod is a skirmish matcher most games have some sort of campaign to do
this game needs more maps more demis and more content it feel like they got the worlds best football players together just to have the game be canceled
and i am talking about the proper football not the one were u kick the ball about 1-10 times a game
Well Pantheon doesn't seem to be working right now, although Skirmish and Custom games are fine for me.
Anyways I don't think I'll be getting LoL. It sounds interesting but the art style turns me off.
As I said, some people play a game to 'finish' it - to see all the content. Once there is no more new content to be seen, they leave. However, a multiplayer game survives because people play it because the game is fun regardless of the amount content. The most played maps on Counter-Strike: Source are Office and Dust2 and these were included at launch. People still play them because they're still fun.
And I agree with the Art Style comment - they took the highly stylised graphics of the Warcraft games and somehow managed to make them even less interesting and cartoon like while retaining none of the charm.
Well a few days ago Pantheon was deliberately setting up 3v2 games: http://forums.demigodthegame.com/356654
But I guess they fixed it.
Out of the 20 something heroes only 1 or 2 actually look interesting to me.
Hm... never heard of that game before and doesn't really look appealing to me.
Sorry to hijack a thread but Healer are you getting my PM's on the forum?

Comparing LOL to Demigod ... I dunno ...
With all the content they will release looks crapy.
Yap.
Answered.
LoL will release in September, but then, like most multiplayer games, it will have bugs as well... It's also several months away, which gives Demigod mroe than enough time to improve. We could potentially see two new demigods within that time.
Demigod has a number of issues (the UI lockups being my major issue) but there's plenty of time before LoL releases and fixes their own problems. I think it will ultimately come down to the quality of the modding that goes on for either game. Whichever game has better modding will determine the winner.
Modding? You got to be kidding. These types of games don't survive because of modding. You are confusing demigod with C&C and other rts. Demigod is not an rts. Wtf are you going to mod here? Demigod is pure mp game. Modding and multiplayer rarely goes together (can't actually remember any cases atm).
Which ever game has better and richer content will be the winner. And it ain't looking good for demigod. 8 dg's? LoL has so much more, I wonder what problems SD/GPG has about making more heroes. They must have chosen some shitty way of making them, it's too hard/expensive for them to pump out more demigods so my predictions is that Demigod will lose hands down.
Izzo, if I could make maps for Demigod there would be more content, therefore modding == more content.
How are you going to get them on pantheon? Relying the custom games to be the source of competition won't work. Pantheon should be where the competition is at. So there's two huge if's to consider, IF pantheon works, IF we can make our own maps relatively easy.
And how big would these maps be? As I understand they are 3d models, I have very little exprience with 3d modeling but I would guess they are huge as fuck. Good luck passing them around.
speak for yourself, I have zero interest in LOL. I've already played Warcraft 3 and have no desire to play a brand new game that emulates a 5 year old engine.
they already told us suppoet for the game after they implement clan based options during the summer, the 2 other dgs, and 1.2 patch will depend on sales. so that should tell you alot there tat they already packed it in. after saying that i will never buy another sd or gpg game agian no matter how good it is. after reading what frog posted i lost all hope on this game surviving till xmas.
Hence is why i like playing pay as you play. you do get better support and added content since they are getten paid to support the game. say what you will about aoc at least they are getten support for the game and it does not seem that they are ready to fold it in as sd/gpg have.
