Does anyone know guides and programs and the like that could help me learn to mod games? Im quite interested in learning to do so. Thanks
It depends a lot on what game/games you want to mod, and how you want to mod them. Modeling a new unit and getting it in game takes a lot more work and effort than rebalancing a couple existing units, etc. You can find guides online for all the different modelling programs, although as far as I know most games don't have any such thing to teach you how to mod. Most of it is just trial+error.
Each game is different. There's no one way to mod, it all depends on how the game engine is created.
A lot of Sins modding is working with values in text files, for example. Even creating abilities is just plugging in different effects into pre-set templates.
In Demigod and Supreme Commander it's LUA script, which is more or less actual programming.
Half-Life 2 has its own Source SDK (software development kit) that provides the tools and the backbone for mods.
Probably the only universal thing in all the games is that they need a 3D graphics app (like Maya or 3d Studio Max or XSI) to make the models and texture them. But after that, how you get those models into the game again fully depends on the game engine.
An easier question to answer would be "how do you mod a certain game", but like they said...there's not always a guide on "this is how you mod this game" unless some other player was nice enough to figure it out and write it all for the rest of us
So is there a certain game you are trying to make a mod for? It helps even more if you could describe what you want to accomplish.
Ok I see. Well I was thinking I'd start with either the source SDK or UT2k4's editor as I have both of those and they seem like they'd be somewhat easier to use than some of the other things. Are there any guides or things I should be aware of before I mess with these?
edit: @drugfreeboy- I'm not really sure what I want to accomplish yet, I just wanna mess around in it first ha.
