..there is an Impulse thread on Steam forums?

Maybe it can be interesting for you. It's another chance to know what people think about your service, especially when not customers already.
You mean what steam fanboys (as a generalization) think about the service, right? Because that's the problem with non neutral grounds. Not that there cannot be truth in some points,
Well, i think criticism can be useful to learn how to do a better work, even when it cames from fanboys.
Yes, indeed. The same that to ask about Impulse in these forums would be biased too, just that this time in favour. In both cases there would be comments to consider as good feedback tough. But I think that to see what non customers think, I'd choose a site that has nothing to do with digital distribution systems. Just to reduce noise. (which doesn't mean that to read Steam's forums shouldn't be done)
Guys, Steam is like a dream. I buy nearly all my games off Steam, for low prices too, due to weekend deals and sales. I think Impulse could be very viable competition as long as it provides a large range of games. I'm willing to use both Steam and Impulse as long as Impulse doesn't have to run to play their games. I would say that the reward of a 20% coupon is nice for buying Demigod, but there aren't really any games, in my opinion, worth using it on. So I'm Steam all the way unless you guys at Stardock make Impulse the best it could be.
I'm not sure what the point is.
I use Steam as well. But I wouldn't want Steam to be my only choice.
Impulse has been out less than a year. Consider how much it has changed in 1 year. It's amazing how quickly people forget the first year Steam had.
Frogboy, you should post in that thread. Something like that impresses people as you know.
Oh, the painful memories!
/sends Frogboy the therapy bill
I remember Steam's first year.. God good what a nightmare. The software still isn't stable. Servers constantly crashing my friends list is getting annoying.
That said people are less forgiving when something better is already available.
Considering how much Steam grew from that point on, the first year was like a beta. Assuming Steam will continue to grow, that first year will become less and less important.
I must be very lucky, because i'm on Steam since the very start and i NEVER had 1 single problem with it.
Just pre ordered SFIV a couple of days ago from Impulse... let's see how it works. I'm always open to try other things.
You clearly don't live in the EU.
Well, Stardock is going even worst, about this.
I used to be a very fervent Impulse supporter, but their pricing for european customers simply sucks.
Well its nice to have alternatives
Sure, but it would be much better to have best alternatives, not worst.
Given the small * that is near all pricings for european customers, it would have been more accurate to have written:
"sadly, the pricing imposed by publishers on the Impulse platform for european customers simply sucks"
True, but not Stardock itself. I got the Demigod digital download for it's current $ price converted to €, which is 25% cheaper than any other game you can buy here and 40% cheaper than standard game prices.
Steam: $50 for a game huh? Well let's just put some typ-ex on that dollar sign and just put a euro sign there and don't give a fuck about our customers.
Well, maybe they have to argue more about this, when they sign a contract. "Are you sure, mr publisher? Maybe you're going to lost many sells. Our customers really don't like regional pricing".
I really like digital delivery for its conforts and all, but it's going worse and worse... Why do I have to pay dumb prices in euros when I can simply order games from english websites, paying them around 40% less?
It's not even fair wich we have to pay DD as much as retail versions (when it costs fairly less to publishers), but paying even more it's...well, just insane.
Well they are still in early stages (sort of) of aquiring content for Impulse. I guess they are not being too critical yet because if no producer releases games on Impulse they won't get support and the community going from our side. Once most publishers put their games on here they can probably bargain a bit more.
And I vote for a rule that digital downloads should be enforced to be atleast 15% cheaper than the retail package. By the way I will NOT use Impulse to buy games here (in the EU) if the price is the same in euros. Not only do I think it is bullshit, but like you said I'd rather order them from websites that do offer them for normal prices.
This is not a Stardock rant though, I know at this time they can not do much about it.
I never yet bought a game on Steam. I looked at the service, and at once it inspired a negative attitude.
Impulse is good. www.gog.com has some interesting old games too, but I have yet to buy one.
Some people have not and consequently as well as for other reasons (read as DRM and RR) have very limited purchases on the service.
BTW: The thread is no longer accessable - 'magine that on Valuve forums... The heavy hand strikes again!!!!
I have no purchase on there. The only reason I even have it on my PC is that I bought CS:S a while back and it forces you to install and run Steam to even play it. Which is why I love Impulse. It's great for updating and browsing around games, but when I don't feel like having it on I can just close the app. Gotta love Impulse.
One thing that can definitely be improved with both services is the login time. Both services take 10+ seconds to be fully logged in usually, which is a bit long imo.
I have bought quite a few games on steam actually.
And most have installed fine, etc, if much slower than impulse
But overall they are both solid platforms.
However lately with more games available on steam I find myself saying "i'll wait till its on impulse"
Amen to that, another example of out of touch Publishers trying to manipulate the market to increase their profits. Digital download by definition is a global option and not constrained to the traditional zonal approach they all use. The delivery method is identical regardless of location and that should be reflected in the price. They are cutting off their noses despite their faces...and they wonder why piracy is constantly increasing.
The publishers are generally not going to agree to lower DD prices on the grounds that it'll anger the local retailers (and retail is still more important than DD for sales). The only real solution is for dev studios to start holding back DD rights when they contract publishers, but that won't happen overnight.
Hmm guess we'll have to wait a long time then. Not angering local retailers sounds like a valid reason, but not needing them is the exact same reason I think it should be cheaper to begin with
On the other hand, there are some webshops that can offer games 10-20% lower than 'normal' shops, so howcome they can cut the price and big shops supposedly can't? I still think the big shops are just using games for easy money and they don't care much about their consumers.
