I'm an avid Oak player, and typically consider myself to have a very effective build. As such, I rarely encounter something I can't 1v1 if I'm in top condition. This includes most Regulus builds, except for one...
The Reg build I'm talking about is a slow-centric build. I can usually attack this build fine (i.e. he doesn't see me coming or is focusing on someone else), but when the Reg comes after me, I'm forced to run away. This Reg build has maxed mines and MotB and usually several ranks of Maim. It either has rank 1 AF or no AF so that he can also have snipe. He opens with Mark, which is a problem because I tend to open with pentinence + SoF. So upon casting my skills, I now have mark speed debuff + maim debuff.
What comes next are the mines and their speed debuff, plus the massive damage. If I want to survive the encounter, I have several options before the mines hit me.
For those wondering, rank 2 MotB + maxed mines + rank 1 maim = -75% move speed. This has convinced me that stacking speed items is NOT a good idea, since I couldn't possibly get enough to make a difference and I'll be gimping my HP or mana at some point.
I have considered Saam-el's Cloak, Cloak of Night, and Amulet of Purification, but they all have issues that I'm not sure are worth taking, including a massive health loss from not taking Blood of the Fallen, which is my usual Oak favor item. Saam-el's Cloak, while likely the most ideal answer to this problem, gimps my HP and is really only going to be useful against this specific Reg build. Cloak of Night has the potential to avoid mines completely, but it's a 60 second cooldown. If the Reg stacks HP (which I find that the good ones do), then he can still get away, in all likelihood, and I'll still get MotB speed decrease. He could also catch on to me using this item and put mines at his feet instead of in front of me, which will make it more difficult for him to kill me, but make it all but impossible for me to kill him. The amulet of purification seems like the best option, since I could shield immediately, run through mines, then use the amulet to have effectively nullified ALL of his speed debuffs. However, this does mean relying on a decently long cooldown, and while still useful against other DG's, I still find it very circumstancial when compared to BotF.
Thoughts? Suggestions? Perhaps there's an approach I've neglected, or an item build that would work well with these favor items. Lay it on me.
While you'd take more damage this way, you could pop shield AFTER the mines blow you up, the shield will then cleanse the slow from them and Mark.
Or buy the cheap 350 minotaur idol and send them into Regulus first to clear out the mines? After that you should have a free run to him, when he goes to throw those mines down ontop of you interrupt him! Then pop shield if you just activated Mark, now you lay into him and he falls over dead or he runs away and you still can't catch him because you refuse to speed stack at all.
Edit : Or just wait for 1.1 when there will be a cap on the amount of slows that can be put on you.
Only fight the winning battles. Just shield up and teleport away if he has a ton of slows on you and you can't win
See battle plan #3. D:
Also, I wouldn't say I refuse to stack speed...I just prefer to stack health. I usually get boots of speed, and that + wand of speed + SoF + penti debuff = net +71% move speed, albeit briefly. I just find that Oak is so inclined to buff his own speed that it doesn't make sense to stack it over health.
I heard about this, but what's the new cap going to be?
Oh and +1 for ideas.
I hadn't seen that. Where did you read it?

This doesn't help. If I was inclined to resign myself to this approach, I wouldn't be coming here asking for help on how to make it a winning battle. I will retreat when I have to, but ultimately, I can't be avoiding someone on the battlefield forever.
Edit - Why's it screwing up the quote function...hrm.
Items:Definitely try Cloak of Night. 800 hp won't help you if you can't ever reach your opponent to hit him, just takes him 3 more hits to counter that advantage. Maneuverability is more important than stamina against Slow Reg and you can use it to blink out of a minefield or into killing range. Best favor item in the game imo.. You are right not to count on speed items, they won't be effective..spend 5k gold to bring your hp and armor up, buy some priests and keep them out of the mines, buy some berzerkers and keep them in the mines... The fight:Start the fight by leading with some expendable minions - berzerker minos will sweep pre-laid mines and they cost what, 350g? (ID ninja'd me on this one, but it's a good tactic no one uses)Negate MoB by disengaging to plant a totem somewhere away from your minions and allies or just stop using your abilities, you don't *really* need them for the first half of the fight. Using shield to purge early throws away one of your best abilities and does nothing to stop the next Mark, which will probably catch you when you are either trying to kill him or run from him - inconvenient either way. However you do it, never let Mark proc when you are in the fight if you can avoid it. Muscle through first few hits to close distance, at half health (or if you are truly badass - just in time to interrupt his mine toss) trigger shield, HoL, surge, penitence, bring in the rest of your minions - he's either dead or running hard. If you still have it use Cloak to leapfrog his mines and finish him off or just make sure to send your minos in first and follow at your leisure to finish or consolidate. Incidentally Slow Reg and Oak are the only DGs I play right now so if you want to practice this I'd be happy to ^^
Pop HoL during the shield after the mine damage if 2k is quite a big deal for your hp? (After you trudge through the mines that is) But I still think the minos are probably the better way to go.
Have you considered pounding your ragequit button over and over again? I find that Reggie can never touch me after that.
I mapped mine to 'Q'.
At the risk of inducing several "gasps" among the DG community, I don't use the HoL + Shield trick 90% of my games. I don't because 1) My build has me on lvl 1 shield so I can use soul power + spirits for massive weapon damage and 2) I prefer to buy better gear/cit upgrades over HoL, or even coast into getting a mage slayer. I can't argue with its effectiveness in this matchup, though, so I'll keep an open mind when I see this type of Reg build.
Also, while I agree that BotF might not make much difference against this kind of Reg and at this stage in the game, its uses early game and general protection given against ALL of my opponents makes me question whether or not I should get the cloak. This is especially questionable since I don't know whether or not the Reg is going to go this build until he's about lvl 10 or 11. I could try doing it anyway and adjusting my item build, just gotta work up for that favor...
Teleporting away is a pretty effective strategy, so is leading with your minions. I play Slow Reg quite often, and the things that generally cause me problems are:
So there ya go, some of the best ways to ruin my day . Don't go spreading it around.
Cloak of Night.
Tele past mines and onto reg, proceed to bash his face in. Use shield to bail out and run through mines if neccessary. Very similar to batswarming with Erebus
If your quick on your fingers you can interrupt his next mines cast with penitence.
Since you use spirits, I might suggest you use them to harass him. They evade mines if I am not mistaken, and also are pretty much damage at later levels. This way, you'll keep him busy - winning time to farm creeps for more spirits, cap flags or join the fray. I also play a spirit build with 1 point in soul power and a good level of penitence + divine justice and SoF(generally missing shield, lolz) and tend to stay away from the enemy DG when we are fighting, moving in only to throw penitence and ( if I have the time) SoF. If he kills your spirits too fast, try stacking on some minion items - but don't forget, planting a raise dead ward and popping SoF once on a creep wave is usually enough to restore your army.
I use ammy of teleportation as my favor, so can't really suggest anything about warping or so.
Tell us which strategy worked for you.
EDIT:Perhaps the Saam El cloak favor item would help again the slow?
I think your build emphasises minions differently than mine; I don't buy items that help my minions, and I eventually max out soul power while only getting about rank 2 or 3 in spirits. They're just there to buff my weapon damage...cant really do much on their own except scout. I could try building to this effect, but I've never played the Oak as a general, so I'm not sure how it'd go.
If I manage to find a game against this kind of Reg, I'll post my results here.
Just read this and my build near the same. I never use Shield/HoL, and I find fighting other Oak with the combo no threat becaue I can kill them AGAIN after they use it, unless a teammate comes to help. It's only a problem VERY late game when we are both dishing out massive dps but he can heal in the middle of combat, but typically I will have other methods of escape such as cloak of night or elfinkind.
Yup, Cloak of the Night is the way to do it. Soften him up with Pentience/Surge of Faith then teleport to him and smash him into piece. Save your Shield for extra mines and Pentinence him moar!!!
