Over the years, some games just stick out from the crowd. Not because of a great story or innovative gameplay, but just because they have this certain style that nothing else does. My question is this: Which games would you pick?
My choices:
The Legend of Zelda series: Dueling Skeletons, traveling underwater temples, or fighting from horseback, these games never cease to feel like an epic journey.
Okami: Unique art, gameplay, music and more, this game is one of the very few I was sad to finish simply because I wanted to keep going.
The first two Command and Conquer games: Oh, come on. These games have more style in their installation than most games in their entirety. From the FMV and CG cutscenes, to the in-game art, voices, and varied units, to the awesome soundtrack, everything just fits in these games. To a lesser extant, the next three also had great style.
Oh hell yeah, but i liked the sequel and prequel as well. Just loved that style of RTS.
Final Fantasy 7
Warcraft 1-2-3 (screw WoW)
Civilization 2
Battle Toads and Double Dragon
to name a few.
Although some great game popped up, I'm surprised only one of the following popped:
Master of Magic aka MoM
Master of Orion 2
Betrayal at Krondor (note- it's a lot better than Return to Krondor, its followup)
Star Control aka Starcon
Star Control 2 aka Starcon2 (note- If you wish to touch starcon 3, do it BEFORE you touch the other two, else you will cry blood)
Goblins 3 aka Gob3
Monkey island series
Although there are a lot more games, I found these games to be great, spaciel and better than most of their imitations.
I have yet to encounter a game from the last 5 years that I have liked more than WoW, and we already heard people's opinion about it.
To me that's just madness. And even then, there should only be about a 3 year difference between us ('86 here).
I'll second MechWarrior 2. 2 really stands out the most for me. 1 was amazing from the gameplay perspective (no game since had you actually managing a dropship with fuel, weight limits, and pretty much a sandbox merc game where you could also negotiate contracts) but it wasn't very "stylish".
Portal
Star Control 2
Master of Magic
Majesty
Dominion 3
Space Ops
Gysh
Civ2
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
Etc. etc.
I'll also second Gazing's nominations regarding Civilization 2 and Alpha Centauri, as well as that of Portal specifically. Portal is one of the very few games in recent memory, of this "new age" of gaming, that I can honestly say I think have soul and style. I absolutely adore it.
Mirror's Edge had soul and style for the first half of the game. Nobody's ever made a parkour-like game before that was fun to play and it was breathtaking hopping on roofs.
But as soon as they started making you run around inside buildings and reloading the same spot 50 times because some guy with an M60 kills you in a second it quickly lost its appeal. I still have fond memories of the first few chapters, though I never finished the game because I just lost interest.
Was nothing to do with lens flare It was style!
Halo: Combat Evolved
not the rest of the series
I agree about Portal and Zelda, thay are amazing games.
Super Mario 64
I'm going to agree about Pokemon. This sounds kind of sad, but I have never spent more time playing any other game. There was one in the series that I logged over 500 hours on.
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. It was and old PC game from the 90s. It was extremely dificult and I found myself stuck too many times on puzzles and finding where to go next. It is just what you would expect from Indy, adventure, action, and that little bit of humor. The only thing I dont like about this game is that it wont work on any computer in my house except the old one packed away in a box
Ohhh ya the Mechwarrior games... man those were fun... really need to bring em back...
I thought of a couple others that I think should be on the list.
Goldeneye 007 for the N64
Starfox 64
Pikmin
Those were some awesome games.
No one has said World in Conflict? Mine are:
World in Conflict (best...explosions...EVER... )
Zelda: Ocarina of Time
CoD4
Sins
Myst
Halo 1 (but most definitely not 2&3)
Metroid Prime
Also, I think Annatar may have out-karma'd god by now
World in Conflict may have perfected it, but Ground Control was the first and brought about the style. And back then, those explosions were just as beautiful. I still remember my jaw dropping when artillery fired and you traced the shells, waching them lose their casings before crashing down in a big boom.
Ah, Ground Control was an awesome game. Onto the list it goes!
Pong
Don't know about anyone else, but I loved Dawn of War (not Soul Storm or Dawn of War II) because it had incredibly awesome battles.
I also enjoy a more recent game, Mount and Blade a lot.
And last but not the least, I liked the harvest moon game for the N64.
Shogun Total War. Now *that's* what I call a slick game.
sorry, the comment about pokemon was ment to be take lightly
also i would remind you that the original post said:
so you dont have to agree with what i like
In no particular order:
Beneath a Steel Sky.Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.Monkey Island 1-2.Full Throttle.Sam & Max Hit the Road.Day of the Tentacle. And as a honorable mention, The Dig.
