This is my first idea for a DG so try to be kind
Before I get to the demigod its self I think it important to recognize and talk about where the idea came from, so we're all on the same page. the basic idea was to fill in the Demigod classes that were missing. we already have tanks (rook), Palis (sedna), DPS (UB) and mage-type (TB) so what was missing? in my opinion is was the Witchdoctor class.
What is a witch doctor class you ask? basically it includes any intelligent based class that uses natural power through mana manipulation, rather than raw elemental power like a mage. basically a warlock or reaper that might use animals/dead/mixed elements/etc. with the witchdoctor in mind I set out to find some ideas for a character and this is what I found:
Influences
I wanted to specialize something that worked on corpse and voodoo based magic since this is usually a very untapped skill build. being a veteran DotA player I obviously looked at characters like Pudge the Butcher and Tormented Soul for ideas. to top that off I also saw a very interesting idea for a voodoo shield from an anime recently. eventually I'd build a fairly solid idea from the following sources:
Grave Robber:
more for the appearance of the DG, I wanted a very skinny, lone limbed character holding a shovel or scythe.
Basil Hawkins:
this is the Voodoo shield idea I was talking about. basically in the anime he can transfer attacks to dolls that represent random people in the area.... basically transferring the attack to them.
Dolls:
I really wanted to have an ability that used dolls to transfer damage/heals and buffs to characters.
Voodoo Dolls:
more for offensive abilities than defense. basically have an ability that used voodoo magic to inflict damage on enemies.
Pudge the Butcher:
where the idea for holding Souls came from to help buff the DG.
now with my influences out the way it one to the DG itself.
New Demigod Idea: Nolio
What's in a Name?
Nolio means Doll in Welsh which is meant to portray the DG's ability to manipulate voodoo magic through dolls and puppeteer'ing souls.
Is He a General/Assassins?
Official he would be an Assassin since he has no real controllable unites, however his Voodoo shield could be interpreted as minions (IMO the general/assassin thing is really stupid... and DG should all be their own class).
Backstory (Short Version)
(I don't really like making huge complex back stories so here is the gist's)
Nolio is one of the first witchdoctor / medicine men of humans. He embraced nature and the earth rather than metal and fire; as a result he was shunned by humans and forced to live with nature. It was here he met the Progenitor who granted him immortality in exchange for his humanity. Without his humanity Nolio could never live with humans and was forced to persecution throughout the ages. Later in human history Nolio discovered forms of manipulation through the use of dolls and deaths (voodooism).
When humans turned their backs on nature and paganism Nolio felt the wrath of the church and was hunted for his use of "witchcraft". one more than one occasion Nolio was even caught and burned at the steak for heresy, but with an immortal body Nolio simply shrugged it off and played dead for a few days before escaping back to nature. in recent centuries Nolio has began to become bitter about humans and their humanity dealing deeper into voodooism, nature, and even necromancy. last time humans saw Nolio was in London during the 1800's where he was mistaken for a grave robber, beaten up and chucked in the Thames with a pair of cement boots.
Nolio has now returned, but not to face humans. This time it's to face his immortal side... his god side. Facing his kin in mortal combat for full god status.
Appearance?
Since there was a bit of negativity towards my last picture (which wasn't what it looked like anyway) i've re done this section for you convieniance... again.
As you can see he's basicly a very tall, distorted man (think Jack Skellinton from Nightmare Before Christmas). In game height would be around as tall as a Giant, so larger than Reglus, maybe as tall as QoP when open. He wears a long suit (1800's Englang style... like Sherlock Holmes) with a large voodoo mask with a skull image on it with glowing red eyes. His hands are gloved with bones painted on the top (not he palm). There is alsol bone and feather decals to make him seem more tribal
His weapon is a shovel which is used for melee attacks. the lantern at his side draws in souls and glows blue which gets brighter with more souls.
His movement and attakcs are very essentric and animated, sort of like that of a curcis preformer with lots of long swings and jumps. For some sort of spell animation or maybe even for resting, i thought it would be cool to have Nolio ballance on top of his weapon in a crossed leg position.
also for his Glowing Blade ability his shovel would turn into a scythe and slice through enemies dealing tons of damage. basicly the shovel glows with souls with make up a beam of light, resembeling a scythe and then slash. here is a gif of it.

the idea is that he is basically a skinny skeleton with a robe on... so not much health or armor; however he's quite fast and does a fair amount of damage even if his attack is slow.

Abilities
General Abilities:
Soul Collector - Nolios lantern has the ability to absorb the souls of grunts and Demigods that die on the battle field around him (Friend or Foe). Nolio can contain up to 15 grunts and 1 Demigod soul at the start. souls can only be captured if they die within 15 yards of Nolio. When Nolio dies 50% the souls are released leaving him with half when he respawns. In a perfect world it would be nice to be able to see how many souls you have, maybe as a buff just left of the portal; one for grunts and one for DG's. (like so)

(A) Humming Blade
(2 sec CT) (10 sec CD)- Nolio focuses his captured souls into his blade cutting all enemies down in an arc in front of him. Damge is reduced by 5% for every enemy within 3 yard of nolio's front 180 degree arc. For every soul contained Humming blade does 25/20/25/35 damage per grunt soul and 75/100/150/250 damage per Demigod soul. Humming blade costs 600 mana and 25% of the grunt souls contained by Nolio (Demigod souls are not effected)
Humming Blade V - adds a 1 sec stun to the attack
(B )Voodoo Doll
(5 sec Channel) (30 sec CD)(only one Doll at a time) - Nolio works his magic into creating an exact doll replica of the Demigod (range 20 yards). this doll is linked to the demigod and any damage/healing/buffs will affect the Doll and Demigod. when activated Nolio will channel the spell for up to 5 sec; in this time a doll is created next to Nolio with up to 1000/1500/2000/3000 HP (200/300/400/600 HP for every sec channeled) if Nolio breaks the channel or the Demigod moves further than 30 yard away from the doll then the doll is left with however much health is was build with. Voodoo doll costs 800 Mana to casts as well as one Demigod Soul. (for more details on Voodoo Doll check out the Voodoo Doll section bellow)
Voodoo Doll IV - when the doll is destroyed Nolio gains 800 HP and Mana
(F)Voodoo Rage
(turn ON/OFF ) - When activated Nolio enters a trans of Voodoo magic. His attack damage increases by 25/32/40 as well as his attack speed by 15/20/30% as well as receives 5/8/12% life steal. Along with Voodoo rage Nolio will subconsciously activate Voodoo Shield meaning any attack from an enemy that does over 500 damage will be redirected towards a random grunt or DG within a 30 yard radius dealing 50% of the damage to the grunt/DG and none on Nolio, costing him 200 mana. Voodoo rage costs 500 mana to activate and 20 mana/sec to sustain.
Voodoo Rage III - redirected attacks only costs 100 mana
(C) Soul Link
(1 sec CT) (8 sec CD)- Links Nolios soul to another Demigod (Friend or Foe or even a Doll) all damage/heals received by the DG or Nolio is split 50-50 between the two. Lasts 5/8/12 secs, costs 600 mana
Soul Link III - Buffs also transfer across link
Passive:
(D) Soul Harvest
Increase the total grunt number of souls that Nolio can contain to 30/45/50/60. Increases the total number of Demigod souls contained by 2/3/4/6
(E) Medicine Man
with every grunt soul Nolio contains he gains 0.4/0.5 Mana and HP regen. also increases the effectiveness of healing spell and items by 115/120/125/133%.
(H) Chilled Blade
for every soul collected by Nolio normal attacks increase by 2/3 for grunts souls and 30/40 for demigods. also attacks slow enemies by 10/15% for secs.
(G) Grave Lantern
Nolio's lantern overflows with the voodoo power increasing the range of soul capturing to 25 yards. also every time a soul is captured Nolio gains 20 Mana / grunt and 200 Mana / Demigod.
What is the Voodoo Doll?
as mentioned before Nolio has an ability that allows him to create Voodoo dolls. these dolls can be created from friend or foe Demigods and act as a shortcut to the Demigods soul (voodoo dolls can even be created of Nolio). once created the doll be of neutral status on the floor where Nolio created it, and will not be attacked by grunts or towers. it can be attacked/healed by either side and can even be targeted by buffs like bramble shield or heals.
the limit to the Doll is simple. depending on the channel length the doll with have up to a maximum Health. this health cannot be healed to the doll, instead all heals will go directly to the Demigod while the doll takes 50% of the heal in damage. direct damage on the other hand will go 100% to the doll and 75/80/85/95% to the demigod (depending on lvl). meaning if the doll is hit with 3000 damage then the Demigod will receive 2850 of that. once the doll is broken, or the demigod dies then the doll will die and disappear until another is made.
on top of all this remember that any heal of damage taken by the demigod is also transferred to the doll. so any deals damage the doll by 50% of the heal, and damage does 133/125/118/105% damage to the doll.
another feature of the doll is that it is only effective within 50 yards of the Demigod. this way doll that are created by the crystal do not buff Demigods on the other side of the map. this also means that if an enemy is feeling the pain of the doll, all he needs to do is get out of range and damage it by healing at the crystal.
Possible Builds:
Reaper Nolio - Humming Blade, Chilling Blade, Soul Havest (DPS / Chaser)
Dr Nolio - Voodoo Rage, Soul Link, Medicine Man, Soul Harvest (Support)
Nolio ^2 (Nolio Squared) - Voodoo Doll, Soul link, Soul Harvest, Medicine Man, Grave Lantern (Harassment / Support)
Anger Management - Voodoo Rage, Soul Harvest, Medicine man, Grave Lantern, stats (Tank /Dps)
Conclusion
So that's it for my idea. I would love to hear some queations, suggestions or critisism on this, always looking for ways to improve and such. however if you do have criticism make sure its constructive... not: "you suck" but more like : "you suck because (enter reason)"

You know, I saw your inspiration images, thinking that it would end up a really cool Tim-Burtonish mindfuckery of a character... only to have it completely ruined by it ending up looking like... a random Grim Reaper ripoff.

looks however this isn't exactly what I'd like him to look like. rather than a spirit form I was thinking more like the picture of the Grave Robber in the Influences picture. a DG with a human form, however distorted and long with very long limbs and a cape/robe going only to his elbows and knees. no face should be visible, only small red eyes (and not angry eyes... sad, sorrowful eyes just visible through the hood)
since the reaper picture is so confusing i've taken it out and will draw up a better one in the morning...

I like. Better than most of the boring monotonous ideas out there. Good synergies and such. Maybe swap out one of his skills for some sort of Heal over time so he can use link with heals and for damage so he can fit a couple more roles? Maybe instead of voodoo rage since if you link yourself to an enemy you don't want the damage going to a grunt cause then it wouldn't reflect to them. Anyway nice job.
PS: From what I've seen posting pictures of your DG or relating it to something already done seems to almost invariably make most people give you a thumbs down.
I love soul link, it means if you have more HP than your opponent you can just stand there and wait for him to kill himself. I think I'll switch to this character when it comes out.
I had a similar idea a while back, wrote it up once. This is more assassin based, but I like it. Shovel look is much cooler, by the way.
I like the idea for the most part, but i dont think it should look like a grim reaper if its a whitch doctor or voodoo guy. A scythe is a cool idea but he should look more like a tribal, barbaric type of guy, with stuff like feathers and bones and maybe animal hides all over him. Basically what you might think of when you hear the words Which Doctor, only more fantasy like.
first of all, thanx for the feed back. i took everything into consideration and sort of remake a few of the things. so here is who i ended up with:
Appearance
so there was quite a bit of distaste for my grimreaper look so i first changed it up to an 1800 engliush grave robber. again this didin't sit as well as i want it so i did some more thinking. while doodling on the pants of my work cloths i came up with an interesting idea for a "tribal shaman" like TretchyStretch suggested. first i came upw ith a mask (bellow) and then went about adding decals and bones around to make him more "tribal-y".
With the body i left the 1800 cloths because i thought it helped witht he grave robber aspect. finaly i gave him the shovel since TheGuildfordStrangler seems to approve of that as well as take of his shoes and a bit of his pants to show some skin (and yes he is black... first shaman in the world would be in Africa). here is what i got so far.
So still got the lantern.. but with a bit of extra bones.
Wentago mentioned switching up an ability for a heal which i thought about for a bit. then it came to me that when soul linked how about not only damage and health is swapped but also regen. since regen is a sort of heal how about the amount of life restored is also transfered. this means that you regen effectively doubles when Soul Linked. ofviously this takes a bit away from the offensive side to it so maybe regen only works between allies? what do you think?
the other ability i was trying to rethink was Glowing Blade. firstly it was support to be a Scythe, but that out now so what to do, what to do. i tried (misserably) to create a shovel/scythe hybrid... but u don't even want to see the pics i got for that . so i had all but given up when i thought of maybe the shovel could turn into a scythe when Glowing Blade was activated. again more failed shovel / scythes... and then i got it:
Basicly he swings back... then a beam of light makes up the scythe and... SLASH! i think the cast time (CT) was 1 sec... so mabye having it 2 sec would make for a better animation.
speaking of the mechanics of Glowing Blade i also had a bit of rethinking about it. currently (if my math is correct) with full souls (grunts and DG's) and full Soul Harvest you can basicly do 2400 damge to one character (a bit more than Hammer Smash). currently the only draw back is that it used half you souls which means ur next hit would only do 1200 damage and so forth.
since this is kind of OP... and also maked Nolio crap agains grunts (who he gets souls from) i came up with a new idea. basicly Glowing blade would split its damage between every enemy within 3 yards. so if you do 2400 damge and there are 6 enemies... each gets a 400 damge hit. again this isn't very much... however it a bit better than getting smashed by 2400 in one for (unless ur alone)
so to sort of balance it out i thought maybe to up the damge done by Glowing Blade so it does, say: 4000 damage, meaning u really want to get out of the weay of it if you alone...and then it has a bit of power against grunt waves, but too much. the other option is for it to scale depending on how many it hits (no not equal portions). say every extra person after the first reduces the damage by 5%. so after 10 people it only does half the damage?
idk... what do u think? really would like to hear some feed back. always looking to tweak the DG a bit.

A skill that reduces damage to 50/50 is pretty nutty. Not OP... just weird.
Also, giving him such a high speed is also nutty. I'm really not sure how to balance this. It seems... interesting, but he has no really good spike attacks. Even with maxed soul harvest and humming blade, he can only do one 1500 damage attack (unless a few demigods have been dying around him) and then loses half of his damage. Not very effective. (that also requires him to farm 3 waves of basic creeps (and a couple extra; four archers and five melee creeps for each side). Not only does it deal damage that isn't very much above normal spikes, but it requires 30 seconds of creeping to power up, has a long cooldown, and you only get one shot before it's back down to normal power.
Also, medicine man is HORRIBLE. That buff gives you 1.2 mana regeneration and 1.2 health regeneration when at full. Even if it's not at full, the "high" creep kills in a game is generally around 500, so that gives you a grand total of 10 health and mana regeneration added.
So his basic spike is underwhelming, medicine man is utterly useless, and his spike takes so long to charge you may as well grab a sandwich while you are waiting.
Also, Voodoo rage would drain your mana absurdly quickly; 400 mana per every time you get hit? In about two seconds of fighting rook you would lose 8000 mana. Seriously, what were you thinking! Voodoo rage in general is bad; such a low damage buff is pretty much useless, even compared to his bad spike damage. To give you a reference point, Bestial Wrath is considered the most useless skill for UB (besides maybe getting two points in foul grasp) and it starts out with a damage buff as strong as your buff after four levels (and UB is a autoattack DPS demigod to more of a degree than yours).
Voodoo doll is interesting, but possible OP. In the early game, you cast a voodoo doll, so the enemy has 750 damage that you can deal at any time, so it's basically a really, really good snipe. Also, I assume the doll's max health is whatever health it starts with (otherwise the doll could eventually have so much health from healing that the demigod will be a sitting duck if the doll gets attacked).
His upgrade to soul latern is pretty insane. He gets half the range of snipe (which is, might I remind you, HUGE!) where every creep that dies gets him 40 health. To give you a reference point, again, if he were playing on Mandala (or Cataract, but he would have to be fighting in the middle lane for this) the two waves of 18 creeps (at minimum, with a decent warscore to get the archers) would heal him a grand total of 1600 every.... however long it takes for creep waves, like 10 seconds, and he would be getting a near limitless mana supply. Compare that to heal, which gives 1300 at max level and actually costs mana. It's basically like Oak's passive ability, except Oak has to land the killing blow to get the 10/15/20% of the enemies max health buff (though that can also be pretty huge with a girdle of giants for cleaving attacks. ).
EDIT: NVM, you changed... well, only the first ability, and I don't even think you know what to do with it. Just edit your OP when you mess around with the skills.
finaly... some good stufff about the abilities.

Problem: Not a big enough nuke. loses too much damage each hit... takes too long to recharge. anything i missed?
Solution: Increase damage done by souls. reduce number of souls used by spell.

Math: so this way, Nolio get a chance to reclaim some lost souls by making it an AoE nuke. also a stock pile of Demigod souls will not dwindle so with 6 DG souls its a minimum 1500 damage. also in best situation (60 grunt souls = 2100 damage) + (6 DG souls = 1500 damage) = 3600 damage... in one go if they are alone. example... bump into QoP with 4 scramblers... full souls... does 3600 - 25% damage = 2400 damage each. about the same as Hammer Smash at full. next hit only does 2250... then 1875.. and so on. also this way DG souls are saved for more important moves like Voodoo Doll.
next is Medicine Man:
Medicine Man
Problem: Not enough regen even maxed out... missed anything again?
Solution: Increase mana/health regen gain.
(this is actualy more a typo than anything. i actualy forgot to put in the lvl II, III and IV stats for the ability as well as clarify the diffrence between captured and contained souls. firstly it was support be 0.02/0.03/0.04/0.06 for grunts and 0.4/0.5/0.6/0.8 for DG's.
the other thing i ment to say was that it isn't dependent on the number of souls that you have in your lantern... it the number of souls you've captured through out the game. so every time you get a soul you regen increases by 0.06. make sense?
[FIXED]Medicine Man: Every time Nolio captures a grunt soul he gains 0.02/0.03/0.04/0.06 Mana and HP regen. and for every Demigod soul Nolio gains 0.4/0.5/0.6/0.8 Mana and HP regen.
Math: so like Milskidasith said a "high" creep killing game is around 500... and say you kill 6 demigods as well. this means you get 500 * 0.06 = 30 (-25% for early game) = 22.5 and then with (6 * 0.8 = 4.8) you get around 26 to 27 mana and health regen, which is almost like a artifact.
let me know if these are still OP or UP and i'll give it another crack. or suggest something that might work. thanx for the feed back

Not really. There are tons of skills that increase your regeneration; getting +30 in both at the end of the game if you farm creeps extremely well (when I say 500 is high, I mean getting 500 creep kills in a game is something that happens when a TB goes on a rampage, though souls owuld also count creeps you didn't kill and your creeps... it's tricky, honestly. I'm not sure if you would get a ton of regen, or not much, because it all depends on the amount of creeps that die, in general, while he is... anywhere on the map. Kind of a boring skill, if nothing else. "Medicine Man: Nolio gains regeneration for standing around while other stuff dies."
Anyway, the new blade ability looks good, though it could be a bit powerful with Demigod souls in the fray... It's kind of hard to balance an ability like that. A different idea, instead of buffing damage for demigod souls, it would stun the enemy and burn one demigod soul. that's a pretty useful ability, I think.
good to know, good to know. i'll do some more thinking about it today and post back this evening... one thing i did think thou would be if Medicine Man increased regen... and the effectiveness of Healing items like potions. what do u think? say 120% benifit... so the large healing bottle does 3600 rather than 3000?

so i did somehtinking and did some note taking on the ability changes so this is what i got:
Voodoo Rage:

Math: this way attacks like grunts and towers won't cost so much mana (which is also reduced) as well as allowing enemy DG's to simply attack normals and still hurt Nolio while in Voodoo Rage. also buffed everything and added an added damage bonus. but since he already has a fairly high damage base (165 (+10 /Lvl)) is it really needed?
Grave Lantern
Problem: way too much range and HP/Mana return
Solution: reduce range and reduce mana return (and completely take out HP)
[FIXED]Grave Lantern: Nolio's lantern overflows with the voodoo power increasing the range of soul capturing to 25 yards. also every time a soul is captured Nolio gains 20 Mana / grunt and 200 Mana / Demigod.
Math: so 25 yards is still larger than before (about 10 yards more) but isn't the whole map (except Prision) so is that better? also insead of HP gain since that almost to close to QoP's move i though mana would be better fo synces with Voodoo Rage and such. also reduced the income as well down to 20.
Medicine Man:
Problem: still useless
Solution: change it so its dependent on contained souls as well as add increase healing effects.
[FIXED] Medicine Man: with every grunt soul Nolio contains he gains 0.4/0.5 Mana and HP regen. also increases the effectiveness of healing spell and items by 115/120/125/133%.
Math: this way when u have only 15 souls you still get 7.5 regen (small but nice) and when full you get 30 regen (stil nice). and without DG souls i can just add in healing effectiveness stuff so he can be more effective when using Soul Link (also works almost better than a healing spell since he can just warp back and buy a health bottle and heal 3600 / 2 (1800) rather than only 3000 / 2 (1500).
so thats wat i got... not sure about Glowing blade... if anyone has a suggestion i'd love ot hear it. let me know about the new abilities and if i get the thumbs up then i'll change up the main post to include the changes (as well as the appearance) thanx
All of those changes seem fairly reasonable. However, I can't really see a reason to turn off Voodoo Rage, and it is pretty easy (especially with medicine man) to get enough mana regen that you will never run out of mana. However, that balances out with the fact that using it would require sacraficing other skills, so it's probably all good.
Basically, I think it´s very good that you worked so much at this new DG. Anyway im afraid, that he might become OP, because a hero witz very much dps and strong spells, but low hp, seems to be very imba (if controlled by a skilled player). ..
Err... well, with his skills he has just a bit of spike damage and low health means he can't abuse his incredibly high speed to chase down enemy DGs that well. But really, with tweaking this is a very good idea.
actualy this is only half true. yes he is very fast (about .5 faster than UB) and yes he does a lot of damage (somewhere around Oak but with more per lvl increase) the thing he is lacking is Attack Speed. meaning he isn't actually a DPS Demigod. more like rook with the power hits. so damage and speed is balanced out by his low HP and low DPS.
this means that his speed is slightly less for chasing (unless probably built) and more for running in and getting one or two hits on and then running out (kind of like quick strikes) trying to avoid damage but still harass
