I tried to figure out how exactly the XP and gold distribution when a creep is killed works, because there are a lot of conflicting opinions floating around here. So I got digging in the .lua code and this is what I found out:

The priests heal and attack... and then a Demigod walks in, eats them all, and gets 100 XP and 100 gold. (well, 99/99, but whatever. I believve it's 33/33 each) That's huge at the lower levels. The places priests make a difference are in unattended lanes where, fighting non priest groups, thery can begin to stack up. But if that happens, it's almost a race to see what Demigd can get there firs tot rack up all the XP.
Please go play 10 games, buy Priest "upgrade" as soon as it is available, see how many times you lose.
BTW make sure this is not against AI's!
Yes, they are useful, but they are way overvalued in terms of gold and xp. They provide minimal healing (even on my HP stacked UB).
If they had the same staying power as even Monks it would be perhaps worth it. However, at the moment it will take you two-three auto attacks to take one out, they will still be one shotted by AOE DG attacks. They are not worth the advantage they give the other side.
If you can't see this, or find it interesting to have a trap upgrade that will lose you games, then I guess you won't change your mind. However, I get really fed up losing games when teammates buy this upgrade as soon as it pops up. If they waste their gold on reduced respawns then so be it, however, this item wrecks the game for the whole team!
The priests need to be changed.
Its frustrating enough having a teamate drop and having the feed happy AI take over... but when they buy priests it just makes me want to cry.

As I said, you can't buy them mindlessly. They are useful in combination with other creep upgrades, however.
CONCUR! Citadel upgrades should always be a good, clear choice. Noobs who don't troll the forums have no way of knowing how much gold a priest yields and thus no way of realizing buying priests early is terrible.
Gold yield on priests should be cut in half.
We need this upgraded with the new priest and angels bounty.
I asked in IRC and Kyro says he isn't sure on the exact amount, but he knows they are now worth less than the starting minotaurs.
This makes priests and angels a no brainer anymore.
