I have this problem with my ping since when i bought the game. I've tried everything i know to solve or pinpoint the cause.Problem:
I must say that i can play any 1v1 or 2v2 matches, no problem here: it doesn't matter where the players are located, it doesn't spikes at all. I've tried on Gameranger so i can see the players location, and i've played fine with people from Asia, Australia, US, Europe, it makes no difference, no spikes from me.
My PC specs and internet connection:
What i have tried:
Next, i will show you 3 recorded games, first one is a 3v3 match, the second is 4v4 match and last is a 5v5 match.
I used CamStudio to record and BitMeter to show the network usage in real time (with average upload and downlod). Please note that BitMeter shows the speed of the connection in kB (kiloBYTES). All videos are HD, so you can clearly see the numbers.
3v3 game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSPpRUm1e8I
You can see that the spikes appear for a short duration, and only from time to time. The average upload and download speed is around 13-14 kilobytes/sec (that's 104-112 kilobits). Note that as soon as the ping spike comes, the maximum upload and downlod speed grows a little bit, from 15-17 kB/sec(~128kilobits/s) peak, to 23-24 kB/sec (~184 kilobits/s) peak. Still in my connection limits (4096 kilobits/s download / 1024 kilobits/s upload).
4v4 game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hyoYIVN7P8
Here you can see the pings i have in the lobby with all players (all green and maximum ping is 133). Then, as soon as the game starts, the spikes go as high as 1400, with only a few seconds of normality, then again to 1400 and so on. Much smaller intervals than in 3v3 matches. Note that the maximum download and upload speeds have rised to 34 kB/sec (272 kilobits/s) for upload peak, and 41 kB/sec (328 kilobits/s) for download peak, still in my connection limits (4096 kilobits/s download / 1024 kilobits/s upload).
5v5 game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQPQkoNMGqA
This is the most extreme, i get constant ping spikes of 700-1500, freezing the game for everybody. You can still see the pings in the lobby are normal. In the game, the maximum download and upload speeds are a bit higher than in the 4v4 game, but not by much: ~46 kB/sec (~368 kilobits/s) for upload and download peaks. Still in my connection limits (4096 kilobits/s download / 1024 kilobits/s upload).
As i've said, i'm connected directly to my cable modem, no wireless, no router.
I've tested my connection on speedtest.net, on a couple of servers from around the world, so i can show it to you. Note that i'm located in Europe!
First picture is from servers located in Europe:
The second picture is from US servers (note the distances from me, as i've said, i'm from Europe):
The last picture is from servers from the rest of the world (Asia, Australia, etc), located at great distances:
As you can see, i don't think my connection is too slow. At least in Europe i have great pings and upload speed. I've tried 4v4 matches on Gameranger and i've made sure all the players were from Europe, but i still get ping spikes. It doesn't matter with who i play and from where.
So if it's not my PC, and it's not my connection setup from home, than it must be either the ISP or the software (Demigod). The only way i know an ISP could cause this problem, is by throttling the p2p bandwidth. I've tried some torrents and they worked fine. More, i've done this P2P test, to see if my P2P connection is throttled. It's not! See the result below:
So this is it, i don't know what else to do. If someone can help me pinpoint the cause, i would be grateful. I would appreciate if someone from Stardock (or GPG) would look over this.
I've tried it on Win7 x64, Vista x64, x32, clean install, different pcs, no luck, as i've said in this thread.
It must be something in DG's netcode that is different from SupCom's netcode and it doesn't like our ISPs. Only the devs could answer this. But as i see it, only SD staff replied on this thread. We don't have any feedback from GPG.
"It must be something in DG's netcode that is different from SupCom's netcode and it doesn't like our ISPs." You hit the nail on the head. You literally have tried everything so you've crackt it...
Demigod fails?
I'm really hoping this gets fixed soon. I don't want to return such a good game.
Ditto.
I didn't say that. What i was trying to say is that we could use the help of someone from GPG who could tell us why SupCom works and Demigod doesn't, on the same ISP. Simple as that. And if they found out, maybe they could fix it.
Anyway, didn't you get a refund for this game? What are you still doing on this forum?
Quote where i said that you said Demigod failed. All i said was it did because obviously you have tried EVERYTHING so ... no one here can help cept Stardock because it must be their code since all other games are fine right?
Sheesh QQ QQ QQ
Is mah account deleted? Nopes! Ty (I help ppl on tech support + the personal computing section of this forum is more intresting than other forums ... way to much spam on others)
SupCom is not just another game that works. It's important because DG uses the same engine and the same netcode like SupCom and both are made by GPG. SD's part in the netcode is only responsible for connecting people in the lobby. The rest is DG's netcode developed by GPG, also used in SupCom and that's where our problem lies.
If the ISP is throttling p2p traffic, then why SupCom works?
If the upload speed is too low, then why SupCom works in 4v4?
Only GPG (not SD) can answer this.
Chea thats what im pretty much saying. "They" can only answer. Seems like they don't want to .. or don't know?
Or have yet to see the thread. Perhaps they're busy fixing problems they know about, and don't have time to look for new ones?
but imo this is a major problem as you can see on the post count in this thread... a lot of people have this problem and we are still waiting for a solution...
imo we shouldnt stop posting in this thread unless its fixed and we can play online... once this thread reaches 1000 posts maybe developers will wake up
Today i've tried a packet sniffing program to see if it's shows something wrong in a 4v4 game. I've used a program called Wireshark.
I've started to record when i was in the lobby and continued in the game, when i've started to have spikes. I've looked carefuly but i didn't see anything wrong, like packets lost or some other error.
If you use Wireshark and want to take a more in-depth look at the log, you can download my full log here.
Here are some shots, maybe some of you know better than me about this stuff:
Dead ghost: play a game in windowed mode, note down the precise times when the freezes are occuring then track down those times in the chart. You should be able to find a common action the game is attempting (for example in my own logs the game is attempting a TCP connection to Stardock servers everytime it occurs).
EDIT: I've just gone over your log, if i am correct (hopefully you can validate this), you should have experienced freezes at the following times...
18:16:19, 18:17:25, 18:17:34, 18:18:13, 18:18:43.
If this is the case, then like my own experience it occurs whenever you are sending information to Stardock servers (209.124.63.231). Its something i made them aware of over a month ago
@ XSive_Death
have you tried to do a tracert to 209.124.63.231 or anything like that?
I would be interested in the results do multiple runs if you decide to give it a try.
Interesting that SD actually recommends Windows 7.
http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/59187
I don't remember the exact times it did, but i've played again a 4v4 match, in window, so i can see the log in real time, and those black with green (or red) text lines don't appear in relation to the spikes in the game. I also have them in the lobby, or when the map loads. AND i also have them in 2v2 games, when i don't spike at all.
I'm lost here, i think i'll just give up on this. I will just play 2v2 games and that's it. Anyway, by the looks of it, this game doesn't have a long future, as GPG does not seem to be interested in this game anymore...I hope i'm wrong though.
I tried running tracert to their server, but my packets start timing out after about hop 11 so I can't tracert to their server (209.124.63.231) at all. I tried with ICMP packets (ping), TCP packets and UDP packets but all of them just start timing out before I can get to their server. Anybody else having this problem?

I hope they don't give up on us. I can't even play 2v2.

I just got the game last week. I have the same ping spiking issue discussed in this thread. Has Stardock or GPG made any progress on this issue?
Heya Dead Ghost. Didn't see the levels you had gone to with pings and so on here
Just ignore the last suggestions on the GPG forums as you have already done them.
BTW I just traced that IP above and it Times out after 28 hops. Just after Orlando USA. Don't know why it disappears either as my other trace ap doesn't manage the first hop in finding that IP.
Are we sure that is the Demigod Server IP?
I personally don't know, XSive_Death said so in his post....
AFAIK normal pings don't get past the datacenter firewall, so those traceroutes don't really show anything out of the ordinary (the last server you reached is in Michigan, so it's getting that far).
yeah I thought about that due to DOS attacks and all, but posted anyway just incase there was a common route + hiccup.
I'm sure GPG or even SD could come up with some basic app to configure packet size and test connections. maybe through 8 proxies / geographically different SD,GPG servers with mock demigod packets. Something to shed light on the problem would be nice.
