ok, i have this idea for a new faction (and no, i dont mean adding the Empire, Babylon 5, or Halo into the mix, i mean a completely new faction)
Get this, ROBOTS!
Ok, these robots (who i have yet to name) would be the remains of their maker species called the "Sarojen" that lived on a junk-planet. due to a programming error, these robots have annihilated their creators, but soon after and felt a type of remorse for the mass genocide. wanting to keep the memory of their deceased creators alive, they expanded their borders to spread the culture (i mean the memory of the makers, not colored space lanes) of the extinct species. while conquering another species in their quest to keep the makers "alive", the TEC received a distress signal alerting them of a new force to be reckoned with...
in short, they are machines that want to take over the universe because that is the only way they belive that the memory of their makers can survive.
their ships would look like they were made in a scrap yard, mostly because that was what their home planet was like. their main tactic is not culture spreading (now i mean coloring in the space lanes) like the Advent, nor is it having many very weak units like Starcraft's Zerg; but they rely on the power of versatility. An idea of mine is that they would be able to attach frigates to their capital ships, therefore increasing the power, health, and armor of the capitals.
different types of frigates boost certain abilities of the capital, for example:
attaching a planet-bombing frigate would increase planet bombing skill (what else?)
or docking a heavy frigate (like the Destra Crusader or equivalent) would give the capital a more advanced version of the frigate's attack (which i think should be a barrage of short-range missiles).
etc.
The planet type they prefer would be junk-planets (i think you know why) and instead of having a ship or building that heals your forces (such as a repair bay), they regain health by killing enemies (by reclaiming the wreakages).
this idea seems like it could fit into the Sins cannon quite well i think (i hope you think so too)
That is my idea, i hope that i have explained my idea to the fullest. if you have questions or comments on this idea, please ask or whatever. and please, no hate-mail.
If you want to make a mod about this idea (not that anyone would, but have to state this) please ask me first...
Thank you for hearing my idea

Diplomacy is coming out! i want to pre-order it now!
maybe the Robots can be a part of Sins 2, it would make a good story (i just hope that whatever is chasing the Vasari isnt a race of bunnys, but plant people would be kinda cool...)
the mystery behind the seemingly random placement of space ponies is finally revealed.....
Their magical tails and hooves stomp the naughty Vasari into submission........how could such a creature of non intelligent design over come the VASARI!
Find out this upcoming winter when Stardock and Ironclad introduce the First FULL sequel to Sins of a Solar Empire.
SINS OF A SOLAR EMPIRE 2: SPACE PONIES STRIKE BACK
Ive got to admit robots chasing the Vasari would make sense they always did love to play with their nano technology too much.
Not just robots, but Evil Space Sex Robots! Who can withstand their evil designs and inhuman lusts?
Awesome.
The race chasing the Vasari may be something of their own creation? I.E. a Vasari Frankenstein monster composed of nanites which acts like The Flood from the Halo series. Just asimilate the Vasari entirely making their racial strengths a moot point.
Evil Space Sex Robots.....lmao Sexual Sins of the Evil Space Sex Robots. Brings new meaning to Cyber Sex. haha
that actually made me laugh a lot longer than you'd think.
wow...
it was a slow day.
Yeah it would also make sense as to how they could get crushed so easily since all the ships are made of the things and they have them crawling around in their bodies too.
Im especially interested in the Vasari menace showing up since it was mentioned as soon being upon them in diplomacies description.
The new images for this "menace" would be TEC/Advent/Vasari with Advent like Tech attached to them but theyd be kindof pale and their eyes would glow red to signify they are under the control of the replicator/borg robots.
i really hate it when a new faction is just a carbon copy of another, no, i think that they should be individual. not some "THEY ARE GONNA BE THIS COMBINATION OF THE OTHER THREE FACTIONS!!!" getup, when i said that the robots should be able to steal the some of the parts of other faction ships, i didnt mean that they would be a soulless amalgamation of the other factions. The robots should be a very unique faction, extremely different from the others.
I was talking about my idea of what the fourth faction will be like. But how about you come up with a convincing fourth faction without bitching because reality is. ROBOTS HAS BEEN DONE A MILLION TIMES BEFORE IN SCIFI. ITS NOTHING NEW.
Calm down lets keep it clean.
its because it is overused that i have suggested it (and besides, Sins needs a reclaiming faction).the other factions are also cliches, so the robots would fit in just fine...
then why complain about a "ripoff" if essentially your ripping off something yourself?
Also how would it be anything like the other three factions? What other faction uses body snatching as a tactic to operate their ships? Also all three factions are pretty believeable and have some form of human characteristic and are relatable...A coldhearted algarythem would be quite unique to SINs as they wouldnt have any emotional hangups like the Vasari, Advent or TEC. Theyd be percise and have no need for diplomacy or underhanded tactics. Theyd be upfront and utterly unforgiving.
and therefore boring. sorry allegiance, but i cant go along with this one. there's no appeal to them.
I think theres plenty of appeal its a perfect explaination to what happened at Kron....and while its been done a Million times in SciFi what hasnt??
I was thinking this morning of a reverse faction.
the general gist is this (and yes this has ALSO been done before...): a race that for whatever reason stumbled back in time (phase jumping from a star going nova maybe, who knows) and end up in the sins universe/galaxy/whatever. they are massively ahead of the other three races in technology, but consist of only a fleet, with few or no civillians. Thus they have military power to expand, but no manufacturing or population to hold/defend new planets. Because of this, they have to "gear down" in terms of production quality in order to compete with the size and versatility of the other three main species.
Because they are so much more advanced, but lacking in any kind of facilities they would have to do research in order to find ways to produce more ships quickly, and cheaply. however the further along this path and the ships become cheaper in quality as well as quantity, but much faster.
Being further along in automation, they require fewer people per ship, but having such a low population, they can still only have so many ships, leading to a handicap in fleet slots (like the opposite of vasari). each ships takes longer to build, but is much harder to kill, in terms of all three attributes. All ships have a limited anti-fighter capability, but their own ability to make fighters is extremely limited and carriers are at a much higher tech level than anyone elses (4 or 5 maybe?) as they dont have the manpower to fly them, or the resources to build them in the quantities needed.
so really it comes out to a race that is mostly capitalship strength (maybe with fewer capital ships, 12 max instead of 16... and only 4 types since carriers arent somethign they can make?) but cant produce in the quantities as the other races.
uhh. thats what i got now. I know this unhelpful and unsolicited, but i thought i was neat on my way to work.
EDIT: and yes, i know this continues to throw this thread out of sync with the original idea.
It's the emotional hangups as you call them of the three races that make them so interesting. if you replaced them and put in an indeferential computer-type player, it would just be the ai but without any flair to cover up its faults. at least thats wat i see from this.
the robots (or wherever this thread is going to) should have a backstory that makes you want to play as them. that is why i tried to make the story of them wiping out their makers and then feeling sorry for it believable. Their goal is to redeem the legacy of their makers, not be souless creatures that's only objective is to kill (or an experiment gone wrong, that is cliche too)
Not only do they need to be believable, they need to be cool (im not saying converting everything to their side isnt cool, but then they would have no strategy, not to mention being severely unbalanced. If they only had one tactic, they would be no fun to play as).
Now, i would have no problem if their military tech tree was a heartlees algorithm, and their civilian tree more benevolent (it would make sense); but they should not be emotionless automatons.
coldhearted doesnt mean emotionless, it means it has no sympathy for anyone outside of themselves. I cant say theyd have feelings cause I cant imagine a program having REAL emotions but maybe simulated emotions. These things would be calculating and converting everything to one side isnt the way I see it. I see it as collecting the resources (like the Vasari do) and recycling it to build their OWN ships....that is a very useful strategy as it would keep them from having to eat into their resources.
Idk I just don't feel it.....mind you, I'm no fan of the robot idea either. I have my own idea, but I can't say cause it would give away a big part of Sinners
you know, i really wouldnt care what kind of faction that they could add, as long as it is cool and very fitting for the game...
