ok, i have this idea for a new faction (and no, i dont mean adding the Empire, Babylon 5, or Halo into the mix, i mean a completely new faction)
Get this, ROBOTS!
Ok, these robots (who i have yet to name) would be the remains of their maker species called the "Sarojen" that lived on a junk-planet. due to a programming error, these robots have annihilated their creators, but soon after and felt a type of remorse for the mass genocide. wanting to keep the memory of their deceased creators alive, they expanded their borders to spread the culture (i mean the memory of the makers, not colored space lanes) of the extinct species. while conquering another species in their quest to keep the makers "alive", the TEC received a distress signal alerting them of a new force to be reckoned with...
in short, they are machines that want to take over the universe because that is the only way they belive that the memory of their makers can survive.
their ships would look like they were made in a scrap yard, mostly because that was what their home planet was like. their main tactic is not culture spreading (now i mean coloring in the space lanes) like the Advent, nor is it having many very weak units like Starcraft's Zerg; but they rely on the power of versatility. An idea of mine is that they would be able to attach frigates to their capital ships, therefore increasing the power, health, and armor of the capitals.
different types of frigates boost certain abilities of the capital, for example:
attaching a planet-bombing frigate would increase planet bombing skill (what else?)
or docking a heavy frigate (like the Destra Crusader or equivalent) would give the capital a more advanced version of the frigate's attack (which i think should be a barrage of short-range missiles).
etc.
The planet type they prefer would be junk-planets (i think you know why) and instead of having a ship or building that heals your forces (such as a repair bay), they regain health by killing enemies (by reclaiming the wreakages).
this idea seems like it could fit into the Sins cannon quite well i think (i hope you think so too)
That is my idea, i hope that i have explained my idea to the fullest. if you have questions or comments on this idea, please ask or whatever. and please, no hate-mail.
If you want to make a mod about this idea (not that anyone would, but have to state this) please ask me first...
Thank you for hearing my idea

Or just make it a hazard they could use:
One of their caps could grab up some of it in a vaccum and crunch it into a bullet?
Or a def. suructure could use magnetic fields and fling the junk in a wide cloud for an area effect?
perhaps it works like a phase inhibiter, all of the junk would take enemy ships longer to phase jump. or...junk could be a discovery only available to junk planets...with the same effect as the phase inihib.
sounds like the geth and the quarians from mass effect
honestly, i havent played Mass Effect (but i want to)
I think that the advent made the robots to help them with war, building, etc.(you know bcuz they are super smart girls that clone them selves it makes sence)any ways then the robots betray them or something.
hows that?
Sybertronic.
ehhh.......
The Quarians created the Geth as a slave race with to good of an AI. When they realized their mistake it was too late.
On a side note "robots" shold be less vulnerable to the mental psy attacks and more vulnerable to nanite attacks.
While new races are fun, the game doesn't really need it. There is also a huge amount of work in setting it up and balancing it with the existing races. However.... if there were any races added, I agree a robot type of race would be quite a good addition. If there was a 5th race, some super organic race would fit as well.
For the robots, you really have to stick with the theme metal, metal, metal and also consider that some concepts of civilization would notbe practiced by them.
Origins: I'd suggest TEC instead of Vasari if you're wanting to go to the junk/salvage sort of feel. The Vasari have very high tech and the nanobots so a slight difference there would be ideal (Though on that subject, the unknown thing following the Vasari could be nanobots gone wrong, think grey goop theory... not really playable, just all devouring). Anyway, robots would originate as a result of faulty programming as suggested on the TEC worlds where automation has been used heavily for ships, resources and other trade items or even as a result of tampering by another race. A nice touch would be to introduce the robots in a mini expansion as a different type of pirate and then as a fully fledged playable faction.
Appearance: given robots have no need of personal comforts and are completely practical in ideaology, ships would be more hodge podge than the TEC but based on the TEC designs. So an ungainly and patchy look but dedicated to it's purpose.
Civilization theme: Repair, recycle, reuse.
Just to add some thoughts to it all.....
Depends on the style of robot envisioned really.
culture could be more of a virus that disrupts enemy culture and planetary systems
hmmm....
as the culture gets stronger on enemy held worlds the virus should start to take over enemy automated systems. with capital ships in system they should be able (with research) take control of affected structures thus saveing them resources and giving them access to more tech.
Honestly, It's a DECENT Idea... Sounds a bit borglike... but, Hey.
You have to remember, these things HAVE to be balanced. Start off basic, you know, the SoaSE research styled ship advancement. You have the...
Trade and Military oriented TEC
Psionics and Religious Advent
Oppressive and forceful Vasari
and the Logical and Brutal (robots)
As such, the Robots culture would be more based on logical, easy thinking. As your culture improved on an enemy world, their population would start to drop - after all, if automation is the culture, jobs get cut, and people get fired! Their refineries and such would slowly have their 'fuctions' decay, and at 0% Population/Effectiveness, the planet is forcibly abandoned - The same was as the allegiences work.
Their war machines, while based on junk, wouldn't have armor - instead, their hull upgrades would increase 'Cohesion' - Increasing how much damage they could take - and their armor upgrades would increase the 'miss chance' ships had while attacking them, up to a max of like 20%.
As the ships took damage, they would expand and become uglier piles of junk, and then finally explode, dealing 5% damage to ALL nearby ships - thus enabling world destroying junk blasts. But energy weaponry (Lasers and the like) Acctually have the opposite effect - They lower the damage these ships do when they explode, because a laser burns the metal and junk away. So basically...
The Race would be STRONG against fighters and frigates that used Solid Weaponry - TEC and Vasari - But the Advent would mop them up quickly...
But their Capital Ships would be sleek, elegant designs that were pretty much flying glass cannons. Lots of damage, low survivability. THey wouldn't be able to 'death scuttle' like the lower classes of their ships...
Basically, their whole fleet is a Suicide Fleet. They make one hundred ships, fly them in, and pray you don't use a lot of energy weapons.
Their shields wouldn't be shields - after all, their fleet's goal is to die...
They would instead get %chances to reflect an attack every few seconds - maybe 10? It would balance out nicely, because the damage they deal on death is 5% of their max hp - which on frigates and the like will be horribly low, maybe 3-4 hundred, and their cruisers could max out at 7 or so. Their cap ships would be pushing the limits at 1700.
Cheap. Expendable. Effective.
The balance is preserved. If you've got a group of ships flying right on you, it's gonna HURT when you get blasted by the debris - But if your fleet is bigger, the death damage will be spread out.
Basically? Their whole war machine would be 'Shock troopers' - Go in, hit hard, and darn the consequences. Their planet bombing would be anhilating the populations, blotting out the sun, poluting the surface - basically, making it a 'machine only' world.
Just my two cents.
here's another propostition - the robots will pursue pure rationality and adapt all the imba abilities and ships other races have....their first warship will be illuminator with very heavy armor, they will have missile barrage on their mothership and instant phase missile torpedo as fleet most used weapon.all their capitals will have repulse and all their frigates will have ability to reconstruct themself into a mobile and phase warping star base...every support cruiser will have the abilities it choses to have...race will call itself The Fagvents.
If you don't like the idea, don't reply.
lol, trollish... but funny
i had this idea, as well as having the 3 basic tech trees, the robots would also have bonus one, it would be a "or" tree: there would be 3 additional trees, but you could only pick one to research.
so the 3 bonus ones would be:
Combat: things like weapons, armor, and shields would be boosted
Economy: they would get a bonus to metal/crystal production as well as a bonus to culture spreading and culture's effects
Empire: this would enhance the build times of ships and buildings, it would also increase the population of the planets as well as the survivability of those planets...
(but these "bonus" tech trees only enhance the power of the normal tech trees remember)
now that i have played Mass Effect, i can see how they resemble the Geth (thoose guys are cool).
Any other ideas?
bump
I hate to be a realist... but its not going to happen... diplomacy is the last expansion... and there are no plans for a 4th race as far as I know.
However... feel free to create a mod.
Correction, last MICRO expansion
But if a fourth race is added, it's most likely whatever is chasing the Vasari. Perhaps something like the Seraphim in Supreme Commander:Forged Alliance.
i saw the earlier post and agree. Vasari made robots. but get this. not just robots. but SG1 style. Replicator type robots that attach to anything including flesh (ADVENT style VASARI) it would totally explain the "experiment" 10,000 years before. and as well explain the sudden "loss" of Vasari held space. Their ability to "consume" an enemy fleet and then turn it around on the enemy itself.
The idea is this "replicator/vasari armada" isnt looking to control planets or asteriods in the concept the other three races have. But more along the lines of the Exodus Fleet in that the planets and roids are only there for resources and once consumed move on.
As well, these "replicators/vasari" are of a hive mentality much like the Advent but there is no religion to it. Just survival. And the reasoning for following the Vasari isnt really to hunt them down and annihalate them but to bring them into the collective and complete their original programming.
Original programming was to bring "primitive races" under control without having to waste munitions and also damaging large amounts of resources. But during the development of this programming an error within the coding caused the "replicators" to turn on its creators and begin branching out.
When the Dark Fleet intercepted the replicator fleet it was able to adapt and bring the Vasari Fleet into the collective. Giving the replicators an Armada capable of unleashing the Replicators fury and objective onto the Vasari held space.
Once the replicators catch up to the Vasari its quickly confronted with a new peramitor. Two other races fully capable and technologically advanced enough to be accepted into the collective. So i guess. its a mix of SG1 and Star Trek. being a Borg/Replicator style enemy. Either way it would totally explain the downfall of a Vasari Empire. Which reality tells you. a Virus is out of the question. Spread too quickly for something that could be contained to the surface of the planet (remember all planets were on lockdown) only Vasari around would be on a ship totally self contained from the surface. This also defeats any rebellion or traitors. How would a bunch of rebels know how to pilot let alone fight with an entire fleet.
one of their Capital ships can be a Mobile Factory. To keep things fair one of its other Capital ships would have the ability to disable the Capital Ships of other races. Then another one could unleash a swarm of converted nanobites that would infest the inhabitants of the vessels leaving the ship dead in space. the Mobile Factory would then breakdown the Capital ships and use their scraps to build themselves cruisers and frigates. Now crewed by the assimilated crews of the enemy. Any Capital ships created by this repicator/borg race would have to be created at a larger stationary factory. All ships smaller then Capitals (remember the Capitals are crewed by the brightest and best of the races. making them the biggest target of any enemy race) would be considered obsolete and destroyed where they stood.
i like this idea...but keep in mind, that the point of this idea is the fact that they are robots...
nano bots are robots....
I like the "replicators/vasari" race idea. Its a good twist, but will the race be different enought in look and function... i don't know.
Honestly I think if there is to be a race introduced, it wont be til the very next SINs game. SINs has been a great success for Stardock and Ironclad. If they throw all their eggs into one basket. What possibly can they offer in SINs 2 other then War breaks out once again..........what a overused idea. But the introduction of the Vasari's pursuers would be a very big reason to have the TEC, Advent and Vasari go at it again. As any game there is always SO much you can do. But beyond a revamp of the diplomacy and the balance issues. I cant possibly imagine what the Full Expansion will bring to the table. Maybe theyll give us more Caps and cruisers and frigates that will give people more options and a choice of how their Fleet makeup will look.
