I just got Dread Lords a few months ago before my XP went a bit bonkers. I have tried to get to work on my old Windows 98, but when I put the disk in it just makes some clicking sounds; and when I go to run in the Start menu it says: Cannot find the 'M:/Setup.exe'( or one of its components) Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.
And I have made no upgrades to it since I got it.
It seems that it can not see this and some of my other newer game disk. What can I do about it?
Are you sure it works on Win98 - I have a feeling it is not supported
Galciv's system requirements mention Windows XP or Vista.
You might try downloading Impulse, registering the game's serial number via Impulse, and try downloading the game and see if that works. It won't cost you more to try this, although I don't know that it will work, either.
Yes. This is the minimum Requirements: Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/Vista.
Thanks Phaedyme, I'll go to Impulse and give that a try.
I have Gal Civ II - Ultimate Edition
This is what Impulse shows when I select "More Info"
As you can see - No XP
Will I downloaded Impulse but it said that I need at least XP for it to work.
Will thank you for the help so far Phaedyme and Hack78.
Okay, try Stardock Central instead. That should work on Windows 98 and will also download/update GalCiv 2. I used it on Windows 98 when I purchased GalCiv and used it until a month or two after Twilight of the Arnor was released.
Remembering though that SDC does not have the latest updates. You may fine playing DL using this, but any attempt to use the latest 2.0 versions of DA and TA (should you want to) will be meet with frustration.
Can i suggest a far simpler solution?
Format HDD and reinstall XP. You said it went bonkers...the install? Or a PC running XP?
Can the Win98 machine handle XP or perhaps XP lite?
Neilo speaks the truth, btw, although much more bluntly than I ever would.
If you decide you want to go to DA and Twilight, you really will need XP.
Plus, in general, you want XP at the very least to run most modern games. There is an unfortunate side effect in terms of losing the ability to run some older games, but there's ways around that, too.
To the OP - are you sure your CD drive is working correctly? From your description of the problem, I would say possibly not.
And for all the people chiming in about the system requirements, the original Dread Lords was made to work with 98/ME/2000/XP (quoting from my Dread Lords box (not Vista, as Vista was not yet released)).
The 'clicking sounds' and the fact that an error comes up with the message "Cannot find the 'M:/Setup.exe'( or one of its components) Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available."... should indicate something other than the system requirements.
If the drive can not read the file, it has nothing to do with system requirements. It has more to do with the hardware, or possibly a defective CD disc.
SDC might be the best option. It may not have the latest updates, but it will have up to 1.4 - which is the most important update if you are only playing the original DL.
Ohh, i certainly wasn't trying to be anything other than helpful.
Moose is right as well.
Oh, I know, but I wouldn't just come out and tell someone to install a new OS.
I got the impression that the error the OP was getting wasn't consistent - that it was just a few games (newer) and not all. I know I've had some issues with certain game installers not playing well with my OS (despite the game itself working fine with my OS).

Good morning. Will what went bonkers with the XP is that will I was playing DL it turned off and then restarted and kept doing it when I turned it on even when I did not play DL. And as I said my Win98 is using only what came with it in the box, so I don't if it would work.
Will it is only some of my new games, here are the ones I have tried besides DL. C&C The First Decade, C&C 3 Tib Wars, C&C 3 KW. I have been able to get Rome: Total War to work but my computer isn't up to it, it can see the Star Wars: Empire at War disk but says that I need XP.
And I have the Game of the Year version of DL that has the sound track disk.
Edit: And I tried getting Stardock Central, but after I signed up it kept sending me back to make a new account when I try to download it and I can't find the log in box.
Thanks everyone for the help.
