Hi guys,
I spend a lot of time reading through the forums and one of the things that's really starting to concern me is the hostility to the community towards those who don't share the same points of view. That is, intolerance for other view points.
I would ask that you really try to restrain yourself from flaming other people. It's okay for someone to think something is unbalanced or what the game should be more like some other game. If that person has a valid point, it can come through intelligent discussion. Similarly, if a valid counter point can be made, intelligent discussion is the way there.
If you guys can just show respect to one another both in game and out of game, we can all have a much better time.
I love Demigod. I've poured my heart and soul into it. I know it's a great game. It doesn't bother me if someone feels differently or wants something changed as long as those who disagree are able to put together intelligent and thoughtful responses.
So please, don't call people names or insult people who don't agree with you. Thanks.
to start this is the 1st time i have realy tried getting into an RTS game, for the last few years i have been playing an MMO called dofus (www.dofus.com) which had various connectivity issues over the years, generaly compensated with ingame items etc the longest downtime was for about a week, and resulted in a double xp week compensation (that incidentaly killed the servers too). the point being when things went wrong and people were unable to connect the communities turned nasty, and always demanded some sort of compensation.
what has happened so far in DG is that the connectivity has gone from complete and utter crap to something vaguely resembling a playable game if your running the beta over the period of 2 or 3 weeks.
being the internet people still feel obliged to shout their opinions on balance, OP'd classes etc after only a short period of limited gametime.
Understandably people who havnt even had a chance to play the game online get quite miffed at suggestions like this showing up quite possibly recommending a nerf for their favourite character based on SP experience. My personal opinion is that there shouldnt even be a suggestion forum untill a month or so from when the game is working correctly, but hey im one of those weird people who thinks you shouldnt voice an opinion based on a passing glance of something you havnt taken any time to understand or research.
There can be and are communities that are pleasant to be a part of, and which can be moderated without making people feel like the live in a police state, the single most effective measure i have seen in any forum though is employees responding & posting in threads, almost regardless of what the response is it either calms debate or leads to a more amicable end to discussion (unless its something like "the connections work fine for us, its your problem")
perhaps the karma thing could go negative resulting in peoples posts fading to a more grey unreadable text giving them a very clear indicator that they are pissing off too many people (negative karma wearing off over a few days maybe)
GalCiv and SoaSE forums are blissfully different, it's true. What's the difference? The game type and the resulting player audience. Insert the word "action" in front of any game and you can generally set lower expectations about the resulting maturity level of participants.
mr karma +2
Really? Right after the note about maturity? Look out folks, I can see the train down the tunnel...
Mr karma +12, 99% of them from "Kittens/Girls playing DG?" threads and other one-line useles posts you keep spamming this forum with, even on this thread.
Lol I forgot about CAOD when I made that post. That actually is the worst area of a forum I have seen. Its just full of worthless crap with only worthwhile things shownig up once and while.
i like these forums but i dont like people taking the mic out off stop that can't be changed

oh and u guys need to calm down...
i would say azrail is pretty mature he makes a joke out off things so people stay intrested if everyone was boring like psedom then no one would post
Exactly, he's made of KITTENS IN CUPS for crying out loud, how can you stay angry at something so cute?
hmm i can stay angry art the kittens but not at azrail
This thread is funny. Here's the bottom line:
Your community will reflect the demographic of gamer that plays your game.
In addition, the larger the community, the more douchebag's you'll get. Douchebags (and whiners) have a disproportionately large noise footprint on the community forums.
I think it's a swell idea to appeal to the general humanity in people to keep things level.
However, the only way to curb a competitive playerbase is to either not have a large playerbase (not effective for the company as a whole), or to take forum moderation seriously.
DotA forums are probably a good example for this -- there's whinebitchcrying present in various places.
However, the Mechanics and Strategy subforums are heavily moderated, and threads that are not on-topic for those forums are ejected quickly. In other words, not all the forums within the site are moderated equally.
I think this helps contain the pubretard spammers to, say, the general forums, while people who want real discussion about gameplay filter over to the appropriate places.
I actually like this idea. The Ideas and Strategies forums here could be strictly moderated to keep flaming and non-related junk out so these would be kept to civil and intelligent discussions.
On the General and Off-topic boards the rules can remain as they are.
One must not forget that what ends in off topic forums can be on topic on others Stardock sites. (like the Elemental dev journal forum), unless is a true off topic forum for all stardock sites
Well, I meant the actual forum category titled Off-topic, not the specific sub-categories (for example, if you look at the recent posts, some are just labeled as Off-Topic. Those posted in Elemental Dev Journals would say Elemental Dev Journals, ditto for Demigod Site Issues). Basically, Demigod's Ideas and Strategies forums would be kept clean and on-topic through heavier moderation, and everything else would stay as is. People can then make and discuss suggestions and such in the Ideas forum without, and talk about mechanics and various strategies in the Stategies forum and those would be kept clean and tidy, as really they are the more important ones.
I disagree; this implies that each demographic is inevitably going to behave in the manner attached to them by stereotypes. It may even be a self-fulfilling prophecy and individuals simply behave according to the expecations of them. I think high expectations produce high standards of behaviour.
But who listens to me: I'm the guy that wants Torch Bearer to have a poo-throwing form to compensate for fire form not being able to attack while moving.
