I've been abused by a couple of partners now, who were angry because, as it turns out, I'm not as good at this game as they were. It's understandable that I'm not as good--I'm new to the game. I never represented myself otherwise. I never claimed to be good. I claimed only to want to play this enjoyable game.
All of you were there once. All of you, just like me, wanted to get better. All of you, just like me, needed practice. That's what I'm doing.
Unfortunately, the AI provides pretty much no practice. Its only use is for when you are learning the control scheme. After that, you need human partners and opponents to get any valuable experience. That means playing online, and that often means partnering up with someone. (I do start 1v1 games a lot, however, for whatever reason, they do not seem to be very popular. It's hard to get people to join them.)
Listen. There's nothing riding on the game. There are no ladder rankings. You don't win anything if you win (except ostensibly favor points, I guess, but for one thing, that system's broken, and for another thing, there's a growing consensus that non-favor-item games are better anyway.) You don't lose anything if you lose. There's nothing at stake in this for you, except your enjoyment. And if you do not enjoy the challenge of dealing with skilled enemies while modeling good play for an unskilled partner, then I can not understand why you play games like this at all.
Anyway, that's basically what I wanted to say. Be nice to your newbie friends. Basically, because there is no good reason not to. Since there's nothing riding on the game, any impulse to abuse a newbie partner comes straight from your own blackened, darkened heartless soul , not from anything that's actually happened to you. You've suffered no misfortune! It really is, in the truest sense, just a game.
I want to win it as badly as you. I just don't know how yet. My heart is in the right place. Please make sure yours is too.
I couldn't agree more! I'm also not so good at the game.
I understand you, and im sure most of the community will too, i dont know in anyones case, but i like that my partenr tells me they dont know how to play, so that i can give him some pointers, i sometimes even ask them, but trust most of the community here dont care giving you advice in-game. Add me as a freiend and if we meet in-game i can help you.
I suck...either that or the people I play are just freaking pro gamers or something. It's not even fun anymore...last night got 2 shotted by a regulus character...we both were level one. At that point I just quit...and I do feel bad for that. But honestly the game isn't much fun for a casual player like me. Maybe if there were lower "ranks" where I could play with other similarly skilled players that would be one thing...but getting totally "owned" with no hope to even have fun sucks.
"lrn2play noob"
Ok...probably a realistic response to my post. Maybe I should have known a "competative" MP game like this wasn't for me, although I am a pretty good FPS player and I am an excellent ARPG (Diablo, TQ, S2, ect) player. That's kind of the frustrating part...my builds usually over power other people (at least the ones I have played) I just get beat with the tactical part like other players ALWAYS running away to a tower or something. I understand it's a legit tactic but it feels cheap and when it happens all game it get's frustrating. I think if a player is running away and you get hit it should slow you down slightly everytime you are hit...that way "engaging" in combat is more risky and there is less of this running away stuff.
Same thing happened with Savage 2...funny thing was I was actually pretty good at Savage 1. Something about game design that puts people on level playing field and other games that allow really vested people to utterly destroy regular/casual folks. I think both Demigod and Savage 2 have that in common.
My $.02
Thanks for your post. I'm also new to the game. And think again... Demigod comes out europe now... so there are a LOT of new gamers. If you pro-gamers flame us on the first few bad steps we take in the game... we will loose fun... and this game will loose gamers... and you know what happens when only a few hardcore gamers are left... servers>i/O
So give us some time... give us some hints... and please to the newbies > don't be silly, tell them you are new to the game!
The biggest problem is that it takes so long to get a game, and just one bad player can bring a team down.
I don't get mad at the player, I get pissed off with the game tho...... I am not the greatest player, but I have learnt now not to die or start fighting two DGs at a time. I have enough play with all the chars to play fairly competent at most of them.
It is really frustrating when you spend 30mins looking for a game, get into it, then your partner or teammate is running kamikaze or playing really badly.
I don't condone the abuse, however, you can understand why players at the moment get fed up.....
I took a fair amount of abuse, just learn to live with it and play with people who are a little more mature.
i will take advantage of this thread to ask a question: whenever i start a skirmish game since some time the other dgs are at level 14, 15, 16 or even 18 and i stuck at 9 or something like that. i wonder how they get such a level so fast?
i dont mind if i see aproblem i tell them the reason wht we are losen is that we are feeding them. I tell the to retreat more get teleport scrolls etc..
I agree, just keep your head up and find other players to play. There are some great players out there who are not assholes, just be on the look out. And I agree, the AI is not good practice. Just keep playing online games and building your skills up as well as learning from other players. If you want, you can add me to your Impulse friendlist and I'll help you out with the game. I wouldn't consider myself a pro or anything but I am moderately good and do have a fairly decent grasp of the game and it's mechanics.
Creep killing and flag capturing all the way. In the early game do not worry about other Demigods. Hell, never worry about them. Just focus on leveling yourself up and completing the objectives. If you do feel like taking some one on, try to get them in a situation that works to your advanatge, catch them off guard or when their health is low... try not to take on anyone with full health until you feel confident in your Demigod killing abilities.
If you see me online or add me as a friend, I'll help you guys get started and we'll play some custom practice games for getting newer players acquianted. This goes for anyone, just add me and we'll set up some newbie training ground games.
i have no problem with noobs, but they rage quit to often its annoying
The most important thing is telling them that you're new/not that great before the game so they do not rely on you too heavily, and will most likely give you pointers / organize the team more because they knew beforehand. Coming out and saying it halfway through a game is generally a bad move and will often get bad reactions from your allies.
I extend the same invitation.
I put my signature here because I'm trying to get my feet wet in DG multiplayer - but preferably NOT in my own blood. Had 3 games so far and got mauled really bad. I had some offline games beforehand and thought I had my Rook game down put. At the end of the latest game, pretty much everyone was in the high teens and I was barely able to get to 6, because I died so much. I *really* like the game, the whole package, but either I'm not good enough or the guys I've been playing were simply TOO good.
SO, if anyone wants to play some beginner games, please add me and we'll see how it goes. My forum name and my Impulse name are the same: BFBeast666
The matchmaking system is to blame. In custom games you can join games that specifically mention for newbies.
It is also advisible for newbies to play newbie oriented custom games, even host one yourself.
However, I don't think Patheon matches players base on favor rating, although I may be wrong.
I love you avatar AnnihilatorX. LBP FTW
While I find it extremely frustrating to lose because I get paired with an inexperianced player who does nothing but farm creeps, I always keep my frustration in check and try to give advice on what he should do. I never scream because that can lead to the newbie quiting and getting replaced by an even worse AI. I just try to stick together at all times.
Oh, and remember that while the AI in single player suck they can still be used to find a strategy and build that works for you. Sp isn't completely useless.
The funny thing is I don't have PS3, nor I have played the game. I did play God of War though
Dont blame you, Playstation got worse after PS2 but PS3 is pretty good, LBP is great. Where did you got it?
Well, I'm not a bad player; I'm a decent player actually. But I'll never be a pro (no do I care to be). I just hate it when we START to lose (comebacks are common) and a player starts cussing. Oh boy, what fun, you keep thinking your alli is saying something in chat to make a plan, or cheer you up, or suggesting a stratagey, you hit "Enter" and see a ton of cuss words (maybe if they did not spend so much time cussing in chat, they might play a bit better).
Anyway, put me on anyones friend list (my name is SO easy to remember). I don't mind playing with any level player, and since I play Sedna mostly, I can at least keep you alive a bit longer while you learn to die a bit less.
Oh, and for the people trying to help the noobs, keep in mind you are using lots of terms they may have NO idea what the mean, like "feeding" the enemy" or "ganking" or "farming"; they have NO idea sometimes what your talking about. One guy I was trying to help did not know what DG meant so I have to type out "DemiGod". We really have to remember to use "plain english" with them if we can (at first).
Actually to the team with an inexperiened player, farming creep works better for the player and the team than the situation that the player feeds enemy demigod gold when the inexperienced player get oneself killed by the enemy.
I think you misunderstood me. I don't have LBP the game. I don't have PS3 either. I like this avatar because of the irony mix of Kraitos and Cuteness.
And i think you misunderstood me, i meant i dont blame you for no playing a ps3, since it dosent have enough good games, then i said that LBP is great (meaning there are some greate games but most of them are garbage), and i asked, where did you get your avatar?
PS: i still like it more that other consoles
Ok, here are some tips for new players: At first, you make think that dieing to another DemiGod (DG) is not so bad. You lose no money, no experience points (XP), and you only get 30 seconds in "Limbo". So you may think there is nothing to lose charging into towers or several other DGs, because, whats the worst that can happen? Well, the bad news is, the other team gets money and XP for killing you; money they can buy items/upgrades with, and XP that will make them even stronger. When you die to the enemy all the time, it's called "Feeding" them, cause your basically feeding them money/xp.
So, if your healthbar is near half empty, consider running back to a safer place, or use a healing poition (or even use a teleport scoll to get back to safety). Don't take on any towers till you at least level 8, even then only one tower; if two or more can attack you, you will die. Don't take on another DG unless the odds are even, or there is a team member there to help you. Don't let the enemy DG "lure" you back into their towers, where your taking damage from the DG AND his towers too (try to lead them back to your towers to fight you). If your out of mana, think twice before you get into ANY fight with another DG. Remember, run and keep running till your safe or healed; don't "feed" your opponents if you can help it. Try to resist taking one more "swipe" at a DG your running from; odds are, your DG will die, and his "swipe" will heal up the in a minute.
Also, killing minions that come through the portals (often called "creeps") is a good (and much safer) way to earn money/XP for yourself than taking on another DG. Capturing flags gives you xp/money too. Also, if your with an experienced teammate, and he gets in a Fight with another DG, jump in and help, you get xp/money for "Assisting" too. Just be ready to run the second your health gets low.
If you keep seeing enemy DGs that are way higher level than you, or you just can't seem to kill them, you can still help the team by capturing flags, or killing creeps, or even following behind another player to back him up. An enemy DG that is a way higher level than you still has one disadvantge: he can't be everywhere at once, so just be where he "is'nt" and still getting xp/money.
Got to this site to take a look at all the items you can buy before playing a game; plan out what you would like to buy in advance: http://www.scarylogic.com/demigod/items.php
Go to this site to plan out how you want to spend your XP points on your DG before you play a game; like above, have a basic plan on what powers/spells you want in advance: http://www.demigoddb.com/
Also, you can play a solo/skirmish game with special setting to let you learn as you go: Go into options before the game starts (in the lobby) and set the Game Speed for "adjustable". Then use the "-" on the Numpad to turn down the speed to -10 when you want to tool-tip over all the items/skills. Turn it up again to a speed your comfortable with to continue the game after you've read/bought what you wanted.
And you "good" players out there, try a game of 2v1 or even 3v1 agains noobs; it will challenge you, and give the noobs a LOT of expierence (and a chance to beat you too). They might have fun, instead of getting flustered. You can even give them tips while you fight them.
Yep, same here. It's all in good fun, always happy to play with new players.
