Hey guys, one thing before we start, please keep it civilI know many of you heard of such debates where one side gave his word on Socialismwhile the other side gave the word for Capitalism, so this is a place to share your oppinion.and sorry for any mistakes, as English is far not my main language
Anyways, 3 days ago we had 1st May Day, the day of the workersI wont say where i am from, but i can say that i am from a democratic capitalistic countryand there were a whole lot of people comming out with red flags waving and shouting for socialism.I know many people in here are from USA, and USA education have a tendancy to teach the youththat socialism is in fact evil with no human rights or whatever...Sure both sides got thair ups and downs, but when it comes to "rights" socialism is just asgood as capitalism, just in a different way. So please avoid throwing in false facts.
Soon im planning on traveling to Cuba for like 5+ months, to live in thereto see how its like, to meet new people, to talk to them, to reserch about their lifei mean, one thing is what newspapers tell us, another thing is to interview true socialists. Both my parents are socialists by the way, and with time i find more and more interest in socialism myself.Mainly due the capitalist hostile world i see all around me, with the huge corporations that inslave workersand how my parents are scared as hell to loose thair job, and are rdy to do anything to keep it.Now i never was rich, in fact im more like middle class, but even today i see how my parentsfighting to survive, just so that we wont loose our house, just like many americans did.many blame the crisis but its a different topic, lets stay on this one.i spent some time today reserching the unknown world of socialismi say unknown because i find it difficult to trust media, yet its the only tool i havethrew which i can see the world around me, so i read international news, same news from diffrentpoints of view, and i found this page:http://www.workers.org/ww/2002/cuba0627.php
sure some may say its propoganda, others will shout blinldy against socialismbut i beliave that when people vote, they show the truth, and when i see 9 million cubansthat is out of 11 million cubans (remember there are undaraged childer who cant vote)when i see so many vote for socialism, i must admit, there must be a reason for it.some may say they vote so out of fear, yet if they were scared then they would of avoid voting at all.
I must admit, i think its better to live in a country where i dont have to be scared like shit to end up on the streetjust because my boss dont like my haircut, so he throw me out, i loose my home, and with it everything ales...I also admit that i prefare free health care, so that i know that when the time comes and i will end up with somereally nasty crap going on with me, i can trust my goverment to take care of me without it checking my insurace first.and in case i dont have it, to kick me out of the same door i came in, and to forget about me.
And i must admit, that equality starts with education, and when education is totaly freei know that i dont have to have rich father so that ill be able to register to Harward-like univercity.
Do i prefare to surcifice all the things above just so that ill have a sport car with LCD screens and 3 housesand a super computer? no, i prefare to live a simple life, where i can date a girl without worreing thati dont have a BMW to show her, or without worreing that i cant take her to some expancive restoraunt.a simple life where brands are not the focus of my life and my money, where all people are equal, even if somewhat poor!Thats me, please guys dont attack me because of my views on things, i went threw a lot in my lifeand i can trully say that i dont like capitalism at all.
Open your mind, and share
Try the UNITED NATIONS trackout devices. Who knows, you may *also* get lucky.
They will perish as much as the Nazis.
Count the odds and grab a cell-phone to blow up more Spanish trains as you wish. Eventually we'll pick a fight with the real enemies of Humanity and we'll all be better off without ANY sort of Anarchists or Facists or whatever radicalism religion you'd claim to adhere to.
We're hunting down Al-Qaeda fools & freaks for more reasons than you can justify.
Coke for brains, when was the last time you bought anything that said "made in Africa" on the tag? Seriously now, check into reality at least once in a while. Between constant war and fucking everyone else in the village without a rubber, they don't leave much to be desired in the way of a work force. You'd have to be insane to go looking in those areas for a good factory site. Those poor abused factory workers in other places are, oddly enough, not starving, but I'm sure you'd prefer they bring about hyper inflation and destroy them by paying US wage scales in countries where people live well off two thousand bucks a year.
Then fewer people will invent. Technological progress will grind to a halt. We'll go back to the development rate we had before the patent system. People smart enough to invent things are a dime a dozen, literally. It doesn't take a particularly impressive mind to come up with something new. People that smart, but still stupid enough to spend six years of their life trying to sell one of their inventions before they can quit the other job they're working at to feed themselves are few and far between. The life of an independant inventor is a lot of work. If it weren't, they wouldn't all be working at an engineering department in someone elses company. They've chosen the easy path. If the guy wanted to own his own inventions, he wouldn't have gone to work for Microsoft.
Lie, flat out. Companies, I have no idea how many, have patented individual gene sequences. The entire thing is not patented by a company, it is not all patented by US companies, last I heard they hadn't even finished identifying the whole thing, so it can't all be patented to begin with. They are allowed to patent gene sequences because patent law says they can. No law, no patent for "finding" a gene sequence.
The majority of the worlds food goes to West but there is more then enough food for everyone. Thats why people are starving in Africa etc. Western countries give more aid then socialist countries, but this aid is not achieving anything.
Michael Moore is a lying sack of shit. The movie Sicko illustrates this. When reporting on the healthcare system of Cuba, one should actually visit the other hospitals in Cuba, the ones with no doctors, walls, floors, plumbing... Yeah, they have a lot of doctors, doctors that don't get paid much, and can't prescribe tylenol for a fever because they don't have any. This in a country that recieves massive aide in food and medicine from the evil capitalists...
Of course, if he told us how bad the system was, Castro might have locked his fat ass in jail. It's not like we'd give a shit if he didn't come back, and his supporters all want to worship the crazy fucker. Perhaps I'm too harsh on the lazy tub of lard, a rich tub of lard thanks to morons like you that watch his trash.
I would like to take the oppurtunity to point out that Marx was 100% right here. The petit bourgeoisie are dissapearing as the realitive levels of wealth become more stratified. I.E. the rich are getting richer and more people are now considered poor.
Also, genetics has a role to play. As the 'elite contuine to breed amongst themselves and only themselves, they are becoming smarter and smarter and more and more capable while the poor retain their flaws that prevent them from becoming rich. I dread to see what happens when true human genetic engineering like cloning and induvuialized intelligence enhancement make it onto the market.
Can you really see your children competeing against a legion of Einstein and Bell's for the coveted slots in a school that might allow them to drag themselves out of misery?(Talking Ivy League here, Stanford, Harvard, Cambridge. Even the lesser Ivy's won't get you a good job in government.)
Capatalism is nice in theory where everyone is equal and you have to pull yourself up by the bootstraps blablabla.....The simple fact is that 98% of mankind isn't genetically endowed enough to do that. Dooming in effect them, their children, their children's children to perpetual serfdom. (I have personal doubts it goes any farther than that. Inside 3 generations I expect to see robots replace the poor at least, at the point of a gun of course.)
Eugenics isn't a dirty word.
The idea of socialism is an ideal situation, it has no grounding in reality. It is impossible to make everyone equal, and centralizing economic descisions is asking for a dictatorship. Absolute power corrupts absolutely, if an administration is given control over the economy, they could stay in power indefinently by creating an economic crisis and claiming the country is too unstable for an election. Capitalism is individual, you get what you earn. In socialism, you get what others believe you deserve. And africa is another topic completely, but it boils down to this... Others believed intervention in africa would help both the africans and the developed countries, this obviously didnt work. If you are going to stick pictures of starving children in our faces and try to use moral schema to prove a point, you are just as bad as the original imperialists. Essentially reducing africa to an exploitable tool, And as has been mentioned earlier, there is no infrastructure in africa, nothing to be owned. Therefore there is nothing to be shared, so mentioning africa on a thread about socialism versus capitalism makes no logical sense
I would disagree with that. I think that nearly every human being is capable of a lot more than they think. What holds most people down is self-doubt. A proper education at home and in school will inevitably create individuals that are self-confident, self-reliant, and valuable contributors to the community. Unfortunately, most people nowdays have no idea on how to properly educate their children. As kids we often find ourselves criticized, ostracized, and emotionally scarred. We end up forming these same horrible habits as adults, and continue the trend. Habits can be broken.
All professional animal trainers recommend the use of reward as the best training tool, NOT punishment. Unfortunately, we have yet to form this habit with our children at home. It is no wonder that most people grow up into insecure individuals, who have difficulties in society.
Genetic manipulations or even cloning won't change the brain weight of anyone through reproduction... intelligence is social context, not neurones stimulated by artificial means, drug induced or robotic in nature. You can buy talent? Keep spending until it's wasted.
But thanks for the laughs.
Nah. I don't think that should be the ultimate direction. Even as a believer in minimal government, the idea of no government at all seems quite extreme and unworkable. There needs to be some way to maintain order.
IMHO going to either extreme is totally unworkable and merely asking for major troubles.
H1N1-A determined by Alberta's scientists, btw. Vaccines for this strain of the Influenza virus will be mass-produced within 6 months or less. Who's buying it first?
The rich, the Mexicans or the poor?
That's the difference. Between epidemics & extinction of OUR specie.
What is the point of that reply? This kinda sounds rude, but I'm honestly lost on whether that was a support of current patent law because of vaccine development, or another bash the rich comment because people people can't afford designer drugs that cost millions to develop.
If it's support, I've got no problem with people patenting the cure, patenting the virus is fucking nuts though. I know how you hate my assumptions though.
Sicko might be wrong or right whatever, but I didn't base my argument on a single film. America does not have medicare, Australia for example does. Medicare makes operations free for the victim. Last time I checked America does not have this. A person not so well off can't afford medical bills that he has to pay for. A socialist medical system idoes not have these drawbacks however, the waiting lists can be very long.
How does rewarding inventors halt progress?
I was not talking about Cuba I was talkng about America.
Anyway anti-Cuba rants are just propoganda. Cubans don't have much money, but they get along just fine. There was a TV program about american medical students who chose to live in Cuba because they prefered the lifestyle. These were not isolated incidents. Maybe these accounts are false.
If I was lying, then how come my local Universaty had to stop ALL research on the human genome? It was patented. I'm not lying, maybe my source was though. The Human genome has been mapped. Depending on your definition, the ENTIRE genome has been mapped or only parts of it.
My point was though, should anyone have the right to patent genes? I don't think so. Anyone should be able to study them.
Sure. Habits can be broken. But you only have to write one good android AI and you can replicate that across millions to billions of indivuial units. Whereas each induvuial person requires a unique intervention to set their life right and enable them to become good parents, and then there's always the chance their kid will be bullied in school and end up psychotic anyway....
Um..Yes it will? Genetic germ line modification will change baby brain weight, neuron density, microglial activity and stamina, and keep on tickin' through their children. Intelligence is G, or IQ, or a definite measureable quantity that does not change much over a person's lifetime and is primarily geneticly determined.
It's not possible _NOW_. (or at least, it's prohibitivly expensive and socially ostracized) That does not mean costs won't come down....
As things are _NOW_ you can buy a few points of IQ through mass stem cell injections into the neocortex. They do it in China all the time.
Thanks for the ignorance.
That is incorrect. IQ is NOT determined at any point in a person's life. The inventors of IQ did NOT believe that they were determining fixed intelligence. People have increased their IQs in old age. Intelligence can't be truly measured. The way a person becomes smart is if he uses his brain.
Normal people of the same age all have similiarly sized brains. The number of Neurons plays a big part, but not so big as you claim. The philosophy of biological determinism which states that our genes determine who are are (intelligence, personality etc.) is rejected by almost all scientists.
I've heard of people in America who had little assistance to do bodily functions while in hospital. I've heard of people who had to lean over the bed to piss because nurses weren't there to help.
I'm not attacking America though. In Britain, Canada and Australia people have to be on long waiting lists to get treatment. The system is efficient but there is alot of room for improvement.
Anarchy seams to be unworkable for sure only because it requires certain level of intellectual and ethical sophistication from each individual in a society...
Socialism and demo-capitalism is intentionally "producing retards" so it can use them for various versions and levels of exploitation, voting power, canon fodder, slave labour etc...
Evolution has long reached that level that Human doesn't need any ruling power or government.
Only people who still need it are fat pigs, both capitalist and socialist, so they can remain in power as long as they possibly can and feed of our hard work one way or the other...
So screw em all, frankly...
You pay for it in taxes, we pay for it in taxes. It is illegal for a public hospital to refuse treatment, thus anyone can get treatment simply by showing up at one, money or not. When someone can't pay for it, the hospital eats the bill and state and federal funds for this purpose help make up the cost. You have a waiting list, we have freeloaders with unpaid bills that will never be collected. Since people die on a wait list rather frequently, and die because of unpaid bills rather unfrequently, I'll take my freeloader system.
Although congress is populated almost entirely by morons, instead of having people walk into clinics, they show up at emergency rooms to be guaranteed treatment and cost a fucking fortune even for minor issues...
You said no such thing, taking away patent ownership from an employee contract will remove the motivation to employ people to design thing. There is no reward for inventors in such an action, everyone not interested in such a risky business will be doing something else that brings a regular paycheck instead. The Law of Unintended Consequences is called a law for a reason. Every action has them.
Obviously, since you sourced the statement as coming from the university, I'd be referring to the source of the lies. Scapegoating an "American" company for all the worlds ills is a common practice. This should be amusing, you're an Aussie yes? Whom ever is spreading that nonsense should know better, now that I've gone looking for it, GTG is apparently one of the worst offenders.
My view is that if you design it, you get the patent. Patenting something you find is hilarious at best, and catastrophic in potential damage. But then I'm pretty sure I already conveyed this opinion to start with. I'm not sure why this is your point, you originally blamed capitalism for the existence of patents on human gene sequences. Your point should be that government is universally corrupt, and will do anything for an endorsement check, including signing the patent rights to your own dna to a company that's never even met you.
Since I know dick about how they actually find the gene sequences and obtain the patents, I may just not have any idea what I'm talking about though. If removing them removes the reward for studying them, byebye progress.
Umm, what??
. . . which makes it unworkable. Without law enforcement, it only takes a very small number of criminals to take advantage of an anarchy and totally destroy it. Most true anarchies end up being criminal states.
Totally and completely false. We can't even agree on a set of moral and ethical standards, much less follow them strictly enough to make anarchy workable.
Might be. BUT:
1) They're breeding less. Why? For most of them everything else comes first. Having kids comes last. Also there is a saying here that goes:"A woman's intelligence is the best contraceptive." So go figure.
and
2) Why shouldn't they? Dunno about you, but when I have a g/f I need to have one that I can actually talk to. One that intellectually stimulates me. Sex is not all there is to a relationship you know.
Also it's a simple effect of social circumstances. Most relationships these days are formed at college/university and at work.
Later sexual affairs might be had with poolboys or postmen, but those hardly ever end in a new full fledged relationship.
As for capitalism vs. socialism:
Many people these days tend to say that the die-hard capitalism of the US brought upon us the current worldwide financial crisis. That the greed of the bank- and fonds managers that accompies it made everything go haywire.
That might hold some merrit. But in my opinion the lack of control by the gov did it's part too. I'm reading a good book that was written shortly after the collapse of the US real-estate bubble and predicted the financial crisis for 2010 at latest.
It describes pretty well how and why this all happened and how people could have saved a lot of money by seeing and correctly interpreting the signs.
IQ is mostly determined at conception. (See I can spew refrenceless facts too) It can go up or down about 15 points in a person's lifetime depending on how much they use their brain. 15 points isn't enough to make Joe the Plumber into an Einstein.
http://people.virginia.edu/~ent3c/papers2/Turkheimer%20psychological%20science.pdf
Now it's no longer refrenceless:D That paper says is about something else, but fully supports my notion that IQ is inherited. (It actually shows that the heritibality of IQ is around 85% in ultra rich families, while it's near 0% in poor families. That means you can ruin the wine with mud, but you can't make wine out of mud.)
The number of neurons plays a big part in how smart they are, as well as microglial activity(how fast those neurons can fire) and various other support systems for the neurons such as the circulatory system bringing them oxygen and nutrients. There's actual research that shows that the size of a person's head is slightly related to IQ. Funny how that's making a comeback eh?
Furthermore many more things than IQ are heritable. Like popularity/personality....

The weak want to just belive that if they worked a little harder, woke up an hour or two earlier, won the lottery....they could compete with the genetic supermen amongst us. It's a lie. You're living a lie.
Yes. You have accepted my position, backed it up with more data, then said "What's wrong with that?".
The point is that without an input of good genes the lower classes can never hope to compete with their masters. Once upon a time the masters of the universe would have affairs and get girls pregnant and those genes would 'trickle down'. Now with accountabe breeding laws and genetic testing that is no longer possible. (Or at least not as likely.)
Sure they could randomly mutate into a supergenius.....A process that took 'normal mankind' in western europe 10,000 years to achieve through random mutation AND selective impregnation.
So what are you implying? That we should re-instate the right of prima notte or a breeding program that brings women of lower classes and men of the intellectual elite together for sexual intercourse (kind of a "pop and go")?
Can't say I wouldn't like that as long as I wouldn't have to pay any child support.
I call bullshit. Apart from anything else, if you've actually read Orwell's works (meaning more than just Animal Farm) you'll know he was a socialist himself. His message wasn't that socialism is unattainable but that revolution must be accompanied by eternal vigilence (which I believe Ben Franklin would agree with)
Actually it's all instances of Communism that ended in kind of a corrupt dictatorship (East Block States, Cuba, North Korea, China, German "Democratic" Republik, Venezuela...).
And yes, the price of freedom is constant vigilance.
Are we discussing applied Socialism or Theoretical Marxism? I have to admit, there is a huge difference between the two.
