The two quotes below are from Derek Smart:
Wasn’t I saying in that other thread (where I was almost ripped apart by fanbors) that a peer-to-peer mp model for a game like this was a big mistake and that it needed to be client/server? So now they’re changing it.
Day 6 Status Report
Hopefully mp - the core of the game - will get better now.
@ Kestrel [who said: "It’s a hybrid, no? Still p2p unless one person can’t connect and then they’ll switch over to a proxy server."]
Nope. Ignore what Brad is saying. He (not being the developer of the net code) probably doesn’t understand it. There is no “hybrid” in p2p versus client/server. It is an all or nothing situation. For them to come up with this “hybrid” of both, would be a matter of months, not days because being a multiplayer ‘centric game, the underlying game code would have been specifically tailormade for p2p.
My guess is that they’re leaving some parts (which?) in p2p.
However, unless they go full bore client/server - not an easy undertaking when you’re coming from p2p - it is going to keep having problems. But in the long run, everyone will get to live with it and in a matter of weeks, we’ll all forget this ever happened. At least until the next game.
If this game were not specifically multiplayer, it would be a different story. But even the single player is really multiplayer against bots. Pretty much.
As I already stated, the problems go way - way - beyond being unable to connect, pirates bringing down the network. I called it. Here we are less than four days later and they’re already talking about changing the multiplayer model.
Brad, plz defend urself.
So.. is it really hybrid?
They should just make your ban permanent this time and save us all.
Nobody cares that Smart is attacking our hero Brad?
lol. Yea I am taking a risk here. Hoping Brad is not having a bad day laughs at this.
Derek Smart just can't keep his mouth shut. He is notorious for going out of his way to criticize everyone on "teh internet."
Isn't Derek Smart the guy who released one of the most bug ridden piles of crap ever on the PC?
Doesn't anyone else find it ironic that someone who has a huge reputation for release horribly buggy unfinished games is trying to act all high and mighty over Stardock?
Its kind of like Uwe Boll criticising a Scosese movie and telling you how he would have done it. It is really, really hard to take him seriously.
accidental post
yeah my understanding is that it is really a hybrid.
if Peer A and Peer B have trouble connecting to each other, they will each instead connect to a proxy which will act as a messenger between the 2. As far as the game is concerned, A and B are still connected to each other.
Yes, it really is hybrid.
He's wrong here. I *think* what Stardock is doing is using the NAT facilitator to route people through the proxy if they need it. His statement would be true for a normal P2P system, but the facilitator lets them take a shortcut.
I don't know if Derek understands proxies?
A proxy is a go-between you and other players.
You can connect to the proxy fine. Other players can connect to that proxy fine. Proxies can connect to each other fine. But it is still peer2peer between the proxies, or the players and proxies.
Or maybe I don't understand how proxies are being used here.
You're right. Derek doesn't know what he's talking about.
Just ignore him...
Stardock is proving they are hard at work. That says enough for itself!
I'm really curious, what game did he produce?

Derek Smart is a successful game developer with a PhD degree and three best-sellers behind his belt:
http://www.metacritic.com/search/process?sb=0&tfs=all&ts=3000+A.D.&ty=3&x=0&y=0
But why does it matter who says what about Demigod/Stardock/Gas Powered Game/Brad Wardell? Do you really want developers to participate in shouting matches? Let Stardock and Gas Powered Games work on the game in peace and let deeds speak, not words.
The Proxys' purpose is to relay the connection between intercontinental players. The proxy itself is not a game server or anything. At least that's what I thought.
What Derek Smart says about games or game design should be ignored. Nothing good has ever come from anyone listening to that man. While im sure his intentions were and probably are still good, the flame wars and bad memories that are associated with him just cast a shadow over anything he touches. Both GPG and Stardock have accomplished far more than Derek Smart ever has, like you know, good games. So lets not give the man any more attention.
I heard if you say Derek Smart three times in the same thread he shows up and flames everyone...
Derek Smart is not worth 5 seconds of Frogboy's time. He is a fucking trainwreck.

Sorry, he's wrong.
Basically, what happens is that if a user gets a NAT failed message, it instead connects the user through a proxy server.
This is much the same as you've seen in other games (including SupCom) where if NAT fails, it routes the traffic through a server (such as GPGNet).
lol, derek smart. brings back the memories from 1999.
oh Hai Brad,
You can expect Mr. Smart to appear in this thread within 24 hours to attempt to rebut what you just said.
BTW, from Demigod's point of view, the game would remain P2P. But we'll see next week won't we?
