The reason I play as no one but the Advent is because I find the voice acting for the TEC and Vasari annoying. That's really all there is to it. The TEC voices are grating, though the Kol Battleship voice is awesome. The Advent never seem to have enough of any resource in the early to early-mid game, so I would like to be able to play the other two races. I would really like to play Vasari more, they seem really cool and have awesome looking capital ships, but after hearing the Desolator's voice, I simply said "no"...

I hate all the voices in this game, but I love advent playstyle. And Vasari is the only one that makes the race unplayable
So I thought this thread was hilarious. I find Advent and TEC to be my favorite races, but I love some of the Vasari voices - "...entering phaaaase space." The TEC colony frigate has some very cowardly phrases, and just seems uncertain overall. I can't remember which ship says it, but one of the TEC say "Uhh, where to commander?" as if the guy is stoned off his ass.
Oh, and the Advent voices are a mix of hot and maniacal-religious-nonsensical. I mean all their talk about killing "heathens" and not being "exiles" and "joining the unity" seems to reek of some bizarre combination of extremely conservative, orthodox Christians, and revolutionary communists.
But some voices are hot - "What needs revealing?" Is a favorite. And "The anima are restless." sounds like something else entirely.
But I typically choose among the races by what I feel like playing, not by the voices. I find the Vasari ones to be a little bit disruptive of a laid-back, comfortable playing style, since they jump you into alertness with their cigarette-smoking-lung-disintegrating voices.

I always choose the Advent because, well I hate the Vassari voices and the TEC voices are just annoying. The Advent voices talk like they see into your very soul or understand something you don't. Almost mystical. Also, the radiance battleship, has one of the most impending doom like voices in the game. "Victory shall be ours" and "Glory to the Unity" and "Vengence is a cool mistress". After hearing all those lines, you just feel like it will win and prevail, no matter what
Hahaha! I never thought of it that way, but when you have a bunch of girls who are hell-bent on revenge and exterminating heatthens as PR pointed out, I think it's hard to feel guilty about them dying. Maybe it's more tragic for members of the Unity to die because, due to their singular mind, when one person dies, a small part of everyone else dies too.
I wonder if Advent men are as psychotically obsessed about revenge? I feel the Protev colony frigate pilot would be a tad overwhelmed to join a unified mind. "Yeah, they sure don't look friendly, we'll see what we can do... What? Oh, right. REVENGE!... I think."
the destra's voice sounded like an old woman to me... that kinda scared me.
Unlike everyone else, the advent voices bother me more than the other two races'.
the reason Advent SC have no voices is because they are controlled via telepathic link. In other words, they are unmanned.

I play the Advent for a variety of reasons...pretty much all having nothing to do with the mechanics of the game. One, when I first read the lore, they reminded me of the Ousters from the Hyperion Cantos (a 4 book sci-fi series by Dan Simmons...check them out, you won't be disappointed) and I liked those guys. Two, their ships look very cool and so I'm gonna spend a lot of time looking at them, so I might as well like looking at them. Three, the voices are a bit less annoying than the Vasari. Funny enough, I haven't played the TEC yet (only had the game for about 2 weeks) so I can't say what they sound like.
I really should branch out and play more games as the Vasari or the TEC, but every time I get to that load page I think one more game as Advent, then next time I'll play a different race.

To be honest, I hate the Advent. The tech looks good and I love shapes angles, but advent and vassari are too smmoth. But Advent has the best battleship, it looks as well as the mazara
My feelings are kinda mixed. The Advent have the best sounding voices of the lot, though they're not really my playstyle, they're the least offensive one aurally.
The TEC, on the other hand, have the 'worst' voice acting, in that it sounds a little inconsistent. Most egarious of which is probably the Cobalt frigates excessive... eheh, enthusiasm, followed very closely by the Marza - it's just too loud and brash compared to the others. The scout frigate also annoys me a little, but for entirely different reasons - you're a minion sent to scurry around, not some hotshot special ops dude! (There again, it could be kinda cool if they were... I wonder how you'd rig that? The explosive charges are in the right direction; pity they're useless in a game with no form of stealth )
Ironically enough, the Vasari voice acting comes somewhere between the Advent and TEC in terms of consistent quality - and yet, the style they chose for them means I play them sparingly, when I can stand it, because they get on my nerves too fast. >.<
I think a more whispery sound set could have worked a little more smoothly than the chainsmoker aesthetic, but that's just my personal opinion.
I must be an extremely small minority, or all alone, because I enjoy each set of voices as they are. Sure, the TEC's voice set sounds a bit incosistent, but so is Humanity; and they are traders not warriors. You need to remember that they've been at peace for a long time until it was broken, so conscripting the locals as fast as they can would bring up all kinds of rift-rafts. Maybe in the third(fourth?) installment, the voices will become a bit more professional as the Traders grow use to War. Wanna talk about hammed voice acting? Play Outlive. When I first played that I was taken aback by the level of acting. Not that it's a bad game, for I enjoy playing it.
Personally I enjoy the Cielo's voice, especially when he says, "I've been thinking." The sheer arrogance is great. I play the TEC a lot because they're Humans and I'm on a "Humanity FUCK YEAH!" kick.
Moral to the story: All three races' voices are great in their own ways.
Ugh.
