You know, I've been sitting around for a long time wracking my brain trying to figure out why nobody has done this before... but I think this would make an excellent game:
A combination of sandbox industry building of X2/X3, gameplay like that of the X-Wing series, and vehicle use the like of GTA or a Battlefield/Battlefront game, and strategic elements the like of Battlestations Midway to create a sandbox Star Wars sim.
Actually, come to think of it... it'd be very much like Star Wars Galaxies. Except, you know, GOOD. And single-player. Oh and good.
Imagine... a sandbox game where you can explore the SW universe, build a trading company or become a pirate, join one of the factions in the GCW, land on and explore space stations and planets (they don't have to be box-o-crazy big, the ability alone would be worth it). Eventual ownership/command of capital ships with the ability to strategically command fleets in battle.
I know, this would be one hell of a coding job... but I would seriously pay $100, maybe more for a good title, for something like this.
We can dream, I suppose.
Basically like the Spore space age... except good.
I'd agree with you, this has never been done well and I'd like to see it, but on the other hand I've never seen a game that can gracefully scale from the individual level to the empire level. It's all well and good to say you can go out and adventure in a single starship, but empire managing usually detracts from this part of the game. It'd be a significant challenge to get a nice balance going between the single starship and the larger empire that doesn't detract from either.
yes. like playing sins and having this one damn fool ship that won't do what you tell it too. its seriously kicking the enemy's ass though.
that pretty much sums up the problem of mixxing RTS and FPS
Star Wars would be fine, but I personally would like to see some fresh fiction.
I'm waiting for Infinity myself.
It even has realistically sized planets and other bodies!
id pay 100 for a game that was based on the Moo3 concepts except be in real time, 3D and actually include planet killers and world builders (from space dust and equipment)
I usually enjoy space shooters and such but for me its so much more fun for me knowing i control hundreds upon hundreds even thousands of ships and millions of troops, and then putting them to evil use conquering the universe.
Soase is close, but yet not quite the beast. I guess its just too big of a thing to code.
If you are going to shoot for the sky, might as well toss in wanting it to have the modability of Freelancer(Some of the stuff for it is just insane compared to the base game).
As long as we are wishing, toss in some FPS action as well.(at the very least it would be nice for boarding and capturing large ships)
