I see reports of "bad connectivity". But please understand, when we play the game with people online it works perfectly so we need to try to understand specifically what you're seeing.
So when you say "I can't get into a multiplayer custom game" for instance, what specifically do you mean?
Can you bring up the connectivity dialog? What does it say?
That kind of thing. The more you tell us, the quicker we can resolve it.
See http://forums.demigodthegame.com/347467 for where we're at.
Thanks!
That really sucks dude! Hopefully it improves! I had about 8/11 games at my mates the other day mess up (yesterday), but today on pc and his we have been 5/5! (4/4 on my pc). But yeah yesterday was a bit messy for me as far as playing online, had some issues for sure.
Hope you can finish some games soon bud!
Which reminds me, another problem is that in custom games, it says 'attempt to connect to game failed' in the majority and when it actually does let me in, even when it shows connection to all the other players, the game doesnt start! Also some games are password protected but you wont know until you click on them.
Such a frustrating process waiting hours to just play a game online!
Yeah i had the long waits and CONNECT TO GAME FAILED alot yesterday, it was annoying, but luckily today for me its working alot better.
I'm able to play skirmish games now with out a problem I'd say 70-80% of the time.
But In the course of about 5 games I've got TWO NAT errors. First one, let me play for about another 5 mins and then the game crashed to desktop. 2nd NAT error came up, but I was able to finish the game before it crashed.
UPDATE
Just tried to play a Pantheon game (first since retal).
At this point I was waiting.... and waiting. All the other people in the connection box had just blank slates (no connection info).
Waiting...
Eventually a box popped up:
"You have been disconnected from the NAT Facilitator"
I have no idea, why I got that message. Also, it really REALLY sucks that you can't at least talk to the people you're in a lobby with (or trying to connect to).
UPDATE 2
Tryed to do a Patheon game again.
This time connected and played a 5v5 game, no connection problems!
Was an awsome game we were winning most of it but then they managed to pump all the creeps up (Giants) AND capture a bunch of portals in one swoop. We were not able to take the portals back (my team mates I don't think realized thats what they should have been defending/getting back). We lost but it was pretty epic.
That has been my experience with Pantheaon Games as well.
However, the very last one work... 2vs.2 plus one AI each... and it was quite fun
I say again, this game is awesome when you can connect....
my connection issue is here: http://forums.demigodthegame.com/347261
all i get on pantheon connection tab is:
<username>
"this player has not connected to anyone yet."
other names appear in the tab, which also have "this player has not connected to anyone yet."
some times the connection tab is empty, my name is not even in it
then i get in custom games:
but no other names show up.
i have tried to connect to people in australia, but when i try to join their custom game, they say that im not even joining to be able to be kicked from the game
When trying to join pantheon games, after cycling trying to join/trying to find a few times, I'll get the connection info tab up. In the tab it'll list me as trying to connect some of the other players, and the other players will show up either as this player has not connected to anyone, completly blank, that theyre trying to connect to other players or myself, or that theyre already connected to a different player. I've never seen a player thats "Connected to: Twistie404". The game never moves on from the connection info stage, eventually the list clears and I assume the game has started for the other players. I have seen that I've connected to another player once. I've specified ports using impulsereactorsettings, and forwarded with my router (I have lots of other forwards set up that work fine). This happens every time, and is completly reproducable. If theres any more info you'd like I'd be happy to oblige.
Frequently custom game listing never lists anything. If I try to host and get this error: HostGame in CVP failed.
Pantheon - have yet to play a game successfully
Skirmish - played one game with two other human players, rest bots, usually times out.
Custom - just got done joining a game, get in, 5 people, all green <75ms pings. Sit for awhile waiting. Sixth player joins, one guy says he's red, host boots him. Continue waiting. Few minutes later I get a 'Unable to connect to host' popup, over the chatroom, while I'm still in the chatroom chatting with everyone
Connection is Comcast cable. Router is a D-Link DIR655 (rev A3 hardware) with 1.11 firmware. SPI disabled and Endpoint Independant NAT endpoint filtering (least restrictive). Running Vista, no software firewall active.
I can't think of any other multiplayer games that I have to jump through hoops to get working. Cutting back the SPI/NAT filtering is the most tweaking I've tried to do for any multiplayer game, which apparently hasn't helped at all, as I still can't seem to get into games reliably.
One other related concern - one of the big draws for me of Demigod over DOTA was the matchmaking. I _hated_ trying to get a good game with friends in DOTA. Unfortunately it looks like that may not be possible in Demigod either, because unless I'm missing something, Pantheon and Skirmish are solo, which means the only way to play with friends in a team is Custom... which puts me right back to sitting in a lobby bored, waiting for players to join, who aren't going to be an organized team anyway.
In custom games, most common error is "attempt to connect failed" dialogue, over half the games I try to join end in that. Refreshing the custom games list seems slower than reported by people with good connectivity. About 10-15 seconds long and the UI freezes whilst refreshing.
In pantheon I tend to either wait for a long time and get Disconected from NAT negotiator; or I get a connection info box with all the players listed, some show attempting to connect and connected to normally underneath the username, others are completely blank underneath (not even "not connected to anyone" dialogue). When I get into the game the ones with completely blank connection info sections drop and are played by bots when the game starts (still with names like "doug375" though, so not just normal bots).
Use Netgear DG834N with latest firmware, connected to Realtek RTL8111B PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC on PC.
I have an ADSL connection, Orange Broadband UK service provider
I've tried setting ports with impulse reactor and forwarding them, using DMZ and even using no port forwarding at all and letting impulse choose ports automatically. Connectivity seems to be about the same in all these cases, by that I mean they all threw up a similar amount of errors, I really can't tell if any of them had less errors than others.
I have several small packet capture logs of the "failed attempt to connect" errors and 1 huge one of connecting to a pantheon game with "missing" players, taken with WinPCap and Wireshark, if there's somewhere to send them.
I can send a dxdiag.txt if needed and demigodlog.txt's if they'd be usefull too.
Just got this error:
while trying to connect with other people in Pantheon mode.
Biggest problem I have so far in general is that most other people can't connect with each other. If I host a custom game usually everyone can connect to me and I can connect to everyone else.
Some problems I've encountered:
1. Frequent Attempt to Connect Failed error in custom games.
2. Frequent Nat disconnect error in both custom and skirmish.
3. When trying to start game, host gets error message that certain players aren't connected even though they appear to be.
4. Host becomes unable to kick users with connection problems (haven't seen it as host myself, but I've been in game rooms where hosts say this is a problem).
5. Players "time out" when sitting in custom room waiting for game (when happens to you, says "timed out from host" or something like that).
6. When Skirmish attempt fails, it just kinda sits there, and you aren't sure if it's doing anything (I tried waiting a long time, it didn't seem to be doing anything).
7. Screen sometimes hangs for a long time (freezing everything up - i.e., can't ALT-TAB to another program) when trying to navigate through multiplayer menus.
These are just the ones I can come up with off the top of my head. I've definitely seen other random connection problems.
I've posted this before, but here it is again.
First 2 games I played I had my windows firewall on, my pc firewalled behind my router, and the matchmaking was quick and easy, no failed attempts. This was thursday at around 2pm.
After around 4PM on thursday I started to constantly get "You have been disconnected from the NAT Facilitator" prompt. After watching the connection info for a few times of this I noticed it says this when I fail to connect to someone. This would be ok if it was 1 other person, but I get ejected because I didn't connect to 1 guy even though I connected to 3 others? Ok...
When I do get into games, there is usually 1-2 players per side with 1-3 bots per side. About 1/2 the time I hear the "a player has been disconnected".
The Connection Info Dialogue always has between 2-6 players without any connection info, they are just names on a blank tab. I couldn't get screenshots and I have the logs and stuff but they are too long to post them all and I don't know what is relevant. From what I could tell, NAT negotiations just don't like some people...
Edit: Here's a step-by-step of what happens most of my games.
Finding players - connecting to players - there are 6 names, 3 without connection info, and the other 3 are players who are connecting to eachother - someone fails to connect to me or another person so they are booted - there are 5 players left, me and the other player are connected to eachother - game sits there indefinately (atleast 5 minutes) before I leave and try again. This happens a lot, like 80% of my games. I have tried with windows firewall off, my PC DMZ'd out of my routers firewall, with ports 6000-6200 forwarded to my pc and every combination of those on/off. Nothing seems to help fix the problem of hit or miss. My setup obviously works or I wouldn't be able to play at all, and it has worked with all my firewalls and no ports forwarded and it has worked with everything I can do, done.
WHY does it take an AS in networking to play this game? WHY is it so hit or miss to play this game? WHY did you guys not see these problems in your beta?
I have tried all sorts. I have followed Monks guide and the best I can get is very rare game kicked off in Pantheon or Skirmish, and the best I get from them is all but 1 person has dropped.
Even with Port forwarding, disabling firewalls and even putting my PC in my Routers DMZ I can't connect to most Custom games. Strangley me and my friend can start and join our own Custom Games so I've no idea why it always says 'Failed to Connect' with every game I have attempted to join except my friend's (he is local to me in the UK).
With Pantheon / Skirmish many time I watch the Connection info and there are failures and it never starts. Other times I've had it where everyone connects and it still doesn't start.
Most times when it starts I hear "A player has dissconnected" several times and I check and everyone has 0 ping (bots), on occasion I've had a player.
I have other issues with Favor points and Pantheon statistics but until the connectivity is better I don't care about that yet.
For info I am using BT Home Broadband with BT's Home Hub router (BT Home Hub 2.0A firmware 8.1.A.E (Type A)).
Ive encountered many of the same problems already listed so far, but I thought I should mention that I am completley unable to connect to a certain friend of mine unless we are on Hamachi, once we are on Hamachi however, connection is fast and easy and does not affect me connecting to other people in the same game who are not on Hamachi.
I just thought it odd that i can mix a virtual Lan connection and my internet connection when connecting to people and not suffer any ill effects. To clarify this is when using the custom game option on the internet tab, and all of the people involved have forwarded ports and disabled firewalls.
Straight forward really. I have worked as a Network Engineer, so I know of what I speak.
My PC connects to the internet via a home hub. Port forwarding is enabled, on ports 6100-6200 to my PC. Port 6073 is also forwarded per the instructions you posted elsewhere. The firewall on my PC is set to allow the Demigod application to basically do what it wants. The Impulse Reactor configuration program is configured to use ports 6100-6200.
So, when I try to connect it eventually finds a list of people I can see on the connectivity screen. Some of them connect to me, some of them fail. No reason is given.
Sometimes it works, sometimes with no other explanation the message 'Disconnected from NAT Facilitator' or something is displayed. That is it.
"Then when i load in, Bam, i'm up against all kinds of bots and no one is there. IF it isn't me that drops, the only people to manage to make it in, are the people with the connection info. the blanks never pass this point, and are replaced with AI."
The blanks that you see are not people who cannot connect. They are AI players. We have replaced the blanks with "AI Player" labels for the new update.
You may be seeing NAT disconnection messages when the host has cancelled a game, or when you've been kicked from a game, or if the game has already started while you're trying to connect. The new update will have much more descriptive messages about what is happening.
Try making an exception for demigod.exe in your Windows firewall settings, or turn off your firewall. This is a common cause for not being able to host a game.
I'm unable to host Custom games. The client is making a call on a random UDP port that falls outside the range of what we're being told to use (6073, 6100-6200). I've posted all the details on it in the Tech Support forum here:
http://forums.demigodthegame.com/347896
Thanks
Once you get into the game lobby, there is a chat at the bottom of the screen.
Before you get into the game, you can use the CVP IRC chat. Hit SHIFT + TAB and then go to the Chat option on the menu that pops up.
If there is an asterisk ( * ) by the number of players in a game, it is a password protected game.
Some games that don't have an asterisk are also PW'd.
I am at a computer where I am unable to forward ports, so I imagine this is where the majority of my problem has arisen, however, from perusing this thread it appears that I am having a much different problem from anyone else.
I haven't tried a custom game, but I tried Pantheon several times today, and the same thing happened. I have allowed Demigod to do whatever it wants through my firewall, and have even tried with it shut off completely.
When I click on Pantheon, a screen comes up saying trying to find a match. After a couple minutes it will say something along the lines of match found, trying to connect. A connection info window will pop up in the bottom right, with nothing inside of it other than "Connection Info....". After a few minutes I get the screen "Disconnected from NAT facilitator". So basically, I get nowhere whatsoever.
However, as a non-beta player, I appear to be one of the few who is fully content honing my skills in single player while this MP issue is worked out.
It´s taking a while to connect to the people in the game.
Most of the time I´m fighting against this freeze in the server browser list.
Maybe someone has already said this, but maybe you could take a look on Gameranger, a program which creates a VPN. With this tool, Demigod connection works really nice. And I don´t think that some of the connection code is changed, so maybe it could be a try
