I see reports of "bad connectivity". But please understand, when we play the game with people online it works perfectly so we need to try to understand specifically what you're seeing.
So when you say "I can't get into a multiplayer custom game" for instance, what specifically do you mean?
Can you bring up the connectivity dialog? What does it say?
That kind of thing. The more you tell us, the quicker we can resolve it.
See http://forums.demigodthegame.com/347467 for where we're at.
Thanks!
I've had a similar one.
Well the main server appears to be dead for everyone since nobody can host. Something about a CVP error and you also get disconnected from the NAT facilitator when you try to host.
For my part i could play until yesterday. Some problems of connections as the others says (bots, deconnection messages, NAT failure, etc...) but today i do not get any possibility to Pantheon: the game keeps telling me it didn't find any suitable match and i get the other message "not complete" but no more connection info. My ports are open. I'm in Norway and use a 4 MB line, my router is configured as my firewall, as yesterday.
Did something was changed since yesterday? I can't say from the forums threads...
I'm used to Networks issues and i can't say it's something on my side. Maybe too few Europeans players? From the explanations of Frog i was expecting less problems after the start but no i can't play multiplayer at all.
I'm an average player and i think this is going to be quite frustrating for a lot of people that just want to have some fun, not wait and get frustrated to "maybe" join a play... The most interesting part is the multiplayer part and you get bots in multiplayer. Hopefully this is going to vanish soon.
At that point i'll be surely some others getting back to other games that actually works without need to have a degree in Network Administration and i'll take a look in a couple of week, hoping that the technicians found a way to help us enjoy this game.
I see several different failure modes:
1. In the custom game lobby I try to join a game and it says "Attempt To Join Failed". If I am persistent enough and keep hitting the join button, I can often get into these. I usually throw in some Refresh Game's as well, so I'm not sure if that is required. It should go in on the first time.
2. There seems to be a UI bug in the custom game list. Reasonably often, I will hit Join Game with a non-password protected game selected. It tells me that a password is required. If I reselect the non-password protected game and hit Join Game enough, it will eventually stop asking for a password and I can start trying to get in. It is as if the list of active games changes between the time that I select a game and the time that I hit Join Game. The game I want moves up or down the list relative to the selection bar, and the selection bar does not follow it. When I hit Join Game, the selection bar appears to the software to be on a different game, possibly one that is password protected. This could be related to #1.
3. Once the Join Game starts, I watch the Connection Info. Sometimes there will be a guy who is not able to connect to anyone. In this case, I am connected to everyone except for the guy that has no connectivity. Yet, I cannot get into the lobby, which is silly. I suspect that Mr. no connectivity doesn't have his ports open in this case, however, I should still be able to get into the lobby.
4. Tonight, I made it into the lobby, Connection Info showed that I had connections with everyone. However, I had several red 0 pings in the lobby with about 4 players out of the 7 that were there. Mind you, connection Info said I had full connectivity. I tried leaving and reconnecting to that game about 4 times, and the same thing happened every time.
I work for a software company and have some networking knowledge. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.
i think frog needs to take 5 or so people haveing problems host a game and try and get them in it and see whats causeing the problems.
Also could it be others causeing the problems for us? i can conc to say 4 of 5 people then the 5th person does nothing, is that me or him? am i just unlucky always getting these people? what about when i conc to 3 people game goes with us 4 then 2-3 of them all drop as the game loads? is that me? possably them? or a problem with the nat thing?
I can get custom games to work most of the time - though it's still very dodgy with the way the nat works.
But skirmish and pantheon is basically a joke. What happens is it will either just sit there and do nothing for ages then say it's failed - or more commonly is i will actually leave it looking and go AFK and come back when i hear noises and the game has launched but of a 3v3 or so it's just me and one other guy vs 100% ai as if everyone has dropped or it's launched with just us - or even better, it's just me and 100% ai players. NFI what the deal is with this but i dont think ive gotten into one actually populated skirmish or pantheon. It says "A PLAYER HAS LEFT" message(voice speaks it) just prior to the game finishing loading.
First, here is my setup. I have a speedstream dsl modem (on AT&T/sbcglobal) which is configured as a DSL bridge. Basically this means it's completely invisible to TCP/IP, it just passes ethernet traffic to the DSLAM at the central office. I have to use PPPOE to access the Internet which means my packet size is 1492, not 1500 which is the normal ethernet packet size (I note this because I wonder if this might be factor in connections -- this affects MTU, MSS and packet fragmentation for everyone that has to use this).
For TCP/IP routing I have a Linksys WRT54GS running Tomato firmware (http://www.polarcloud.com/firmware). This is basically a linux distribution that runs on the WRT Linksys routers. The system I use to play games is wired directly to this router. UPNP is disabled on my router.
I have ports 6100-6200 UDP and 6073 UDP set for passthrough directly to my game system. If I fire up a small application that listens on those ports and use nmap on a remote server to scan my IP, they are wide open. If I use portforward.com's PFPortChecker app, it also concurs those ports are wide open to the Internet. So I'm very confident my router is passing traffic as expected. The problems described going forward happen irregardless of whether I use the ImpulseReactorOptions binary to set the ports manually or just let it do it's thing. I get the same exact results.
When I try to play multiplayer I can get as far as the connection window. If I click on this it brings up the window that is supposed to show details of who I am connecting with, however at this point it is completely empty. It takes roughly 5 to 10 minutes before I even see any information in this window. Invariably, it will say that I, and a few other people, have not connected to anyone yet. All the other players have no status at all. So basically it either says not connected to anyone, or it just says their name. If I wait it out, eventually everyone drops out or I get tired of waiting and go do something else.
Oddly, one single time before this last patch I actually got into a pantheon game. In that particular instance, there was 0 delay in joining and creating the game. Meaning, I clicked "Fight!" and it was about 10 seconds and the game instantly started. I have never had that happen ever again or been able to play a multiplayer game after that.
This is as much information as I can think to give so if you want more, feel free to ask. It would probably help a whole lot if there was some kind of networking debug mode that would log exactly what the program was trying to do and what exactly was failing.
As an aside, I find it hard to believe that this could be the fault of anyone's router if they are truly setting up the router for passthrough as Monk described in his guide. NAT is very old and very well tried and true these days. While I concede that there might be a buggy implementation here or there, I find it very hard to believe that the vast majority of routers have any sort of issue with this very well established technology, especially popular and common routers like Linksys, Dlink and Netgear. This is not to say that those company's products are perfect, but they have plenty enough market saturation that if there was a major NAT issue every person with one of those products would be having trouble with many more things than Demigod.
sweet I finally was able to play a custom game...by hosting my own and we played 3v3 vs the AI. Game went well, except halfway through it, I started getting friggin Can't connect to NAt Facilitator popups once every minute or so. So for 15mins I had to click the OK button whenever that error popped up. Did not seem to affect the gameplay though.
Most often it is just connections to people sometimes work, most often dont and say 'connection to xyz has failed'. All relevant ports are open on all parties. We have checked with the portforward.com checker.
Problems with custom game lobby taking ages to refresh sometimes, i guess thats server load on your side, adds to the frustration.
Games sometimes come back instantly as failed to join, i assume they are dead games which the lobby is not removing from the list...??
Sometimes when you even have everyone in the game lobby, there will be someone who has not connected to someone else and the game will not launch until that is resolved (by kicking them and getting them to rejoin).
Okay here are my problems:
Intermittently get "Failed to connect" when trying to connect to a custom game.
Intermittently get "Password required" for custom games that do not have a password set.
Both the above can be gotten through by just trying to connect again enough times.
Also in custom games, it seems that the game hosts on port 6073 no matter what I do. If I choose Auto port it sets it to that. If I turn off auto port it still says it is hosting on 6073 as the first text in the game lobby.
Much of the time getting into a pantheon game takes over 5 minutes and players drop from it all the time and are replaced by bots (if I wanted to play against bots I'd be playing single player...)
The menus after I click Internet for multiplayer are slow. Often taking a while to acknowledge that I have clicked and changing screens.
The network stuff altogether feels buggy and laggy.
Hoping this helps
I get "Failed to get game info" when I want to play Pantheon, although my game is up to date
-All ports are open..no matter what you set in game port to host on.. even when edited in the /bin file.. its hosts on 6073.. or at least says that
-while hosting game.. connection info box just dissappears.. shortly after nat failure
-while connecting.. if you boot someone who has 0 ping.. every1 trying to join still trys to connect to that person.. fail
-counteless games 2 ppl dont connect.. 1 leaves.. ends in locked up game
-15 mins into game host says whats lost nat faccilattaor.. fail
-try to join a game.. 4/5 people.. or whatever 1 open spot.. 2 ppl joining.. fail
-4v4 or 5v5 in room.. change to a 3v3 map.. game crash...
-hit shit tab (random crazy shit happens depending on when you hit it) sometimes it just works fine..?
-umm can't seem to find sum1 with under 50ms....(kinda inexcuasable)
-host a game.. game locks up.. leave game.. game stays hosted for awhile.. other ppl try 2 connect.. blah blah blah they freeze ctrl-alt-delete.. fail
Hopefully you're aware of my issue (seen as you posted!) but for arguements sake....

Problem is as follows.
I have a direct connection to my cable modem, VirginMedia ISP, no firewalls present. Download speed of 9.2Mb/s, Upload of 0.4Mb/s.
Matchmaking works fine, barring the typical errors (0ms pings, connection problems etc). Upon launching the game loads fine (get passed the "connecting to other players" window, and loading screen) however as soon as the game loads one of two things occur.
1) Game begins to lag horribly, resulting in a disconnect.
2) Game instantly disconnects on load, resulting in a flood of "A player has left the game" because i've been the one who has disconnected.
I've only experienced this error (even then intermitently) on Games 4v4 or 5v5, 3v3 seems to have no issue with it.
I get "Join attempt failed" for any custom game I try to join.
For skirmishes and pantheon games it tells me it is searching for about 3 minutes, then the dialog that tells me it is searching goes blank and I eventually just have to cancel.
I have never managed to play online yet. (Please note that I play MANY other games online)
Bump. This post needs a sticky. I think most people miss it.
I've had a myriad of problems that I hope will soon be fixed because I like the game but trying to play it is very frustrating.
First know that I've forwarded all the appropriate ports from my router to this computer, 6073 and 6100-6200.
I have lots of trouble connecting to custom games. Usually I try to join and it immediately says join failed. If it gets by that it takes about 5+ minutes just sitting around then I'll get a NAT fail error message if I'm lucky i'll get into the game lobby area. Now almost always there is at least 1 person who I don't connect to and therefore I can't play in that game even if they leave and another comes I usually can't connect to them.
Next Pantheon games, about half the time I try to join one and it sits there for 10 or 15 minutes and nothing ever happens. The rest of the time I'll get into a game and it will be nearly all bots or even all bots which makes it completely worthless since the bots play like retarded monkeys.
Next when I do get to play a game there is inevitably someone who drops out. Probably since the system registers a very small amount of lag maybe a few seconds once during the game and just disconnects us forever. This is way uncool it should at least give a good amount of time to reconnect the players. (See Warcraft 3 for this obviously you've played it, I know they use client/host but a similar p2p solution could easily be done)
All of this combined means I spend about 20% of the time I'm playing Demigod in game and the other 80% playing your menu game (which I've played better menu games btw since the menus are laggy and tend to freeze up with no user feedback, bad human computer interaction design 101) And of the 20% of games I've played about 5% have been any good not containing some huge amount of worthless bots.
Also there needs to be seperate matchmaking servers for different regions since the game is very unplayable with high lag trying to play against someone from another country.
My issue is, i can't ever get into a game lobby when someone else is hosting. Sometimes i get connected to one or 2 people and they can connect to me. Mostly i can't connect to anyone. I'm absolutely positive its not a port fowarding thing for me.
When i host some players can get to the lobby but mostly only ones that oddly say not connected to anyone but it shows me connected to them.
skirmish Pan=Can't ever join any of them.
I have qwest adsl 7.0
i use a actiontec GT701wg
Vista 32 home premium.
Port forwarded on a dmz.
I have no NAT options besides on and off.
I have updated firm ware power cycled. Setup static ips dynamic ips. Used ipv4 and 6
No firewalls in windows or enabled in my router.
I had connectivity problems joining and hosting games last night, but all day today its been great! Dont know if more/new servers went up or what, but im glad its working good today. Also havnt had any big lag spikes either.
So far in retail I havent been able to connect to a single multiplayer match. The ports are open in the router and verified via grc.com to be open. In the connection info log at the bottom right it often shows me that ive either successfully connected to one person or am attempting to connect to people and everyone else is listed as either waiting to connect or havent connected. If I wait long enough it will say I have disconnected from the NAT facilitator.
Well... I can connect to the general lobby everytime. It does randomly pause for 10-20 sec every once and a while where the program doesn't respond at all. What happens when I try to join a match:
1. As soon as I press join a diag box appears "Attempting to Join Failed"
2. Same as above on another player... x that by 5 separate rooms.
3. 20min later I get into a room. But no one else can join so I wait for another 20 min.
4. Then the game min and a debugger window pops up... looks like I crashed.
After several going through 1-4 several times I'll be able to get a game in.
I have set my router to DMZ and I have AT&T DSL. Right now to try and fix the problem I'm in the process to buy a new modem to see if that is the issue (I kinda think it's not the modem, but I'm willing to buy one to find out)
Oh, also... If I host a game, usually I can get a game going. But one thing that bothers me a lot is that the Kick player option does not seem to eject players. It should be responsive, if you want to keep the rest of the players in the game.
Wow, if you say you thought it works perfectly then we're going to have problems lol. I thought you were still in emergency mode it's so bad.
-Every 15 minutes to an hour, I get disconnected from the NAT Facilitator. If this happens while I'm connecting to a game, the connection status box will disappear and I think I've failed completely and must quit, so I do. I'm not sure if that's what I'm supposed to do, but that's what it feels like. Sometimes this happens in the middle of the game but it does not seem to ruin all games.
-Sometimes games that do not need a password will ask for a password.
-Almost every game, without fail, will have someone drop due to connection failure before the game starts, which usually results in the rest of the team quitting.
-Sometimes when joining or doing a pantheon, the game says I'm connected to everyone and yet the game will not let me in the lobby, so I have to cancel anyway after having waited 5 minutes to connect.
-90% of the games I try to join just give me "failed to join game" or something right off the bat. Friends of mine will have games with room to spare, and I will not be able to enter. I have had hosts abandon otherwise perfectly good lobbies because their friends could not get in even though there was room and no one was trying to connect.
-Favor points are not being saved, but favor items are. I currently have -800 or so favor points, and the only item I've got is Blood of the Fallen. Every few games it will accumulate, and then it will drop back down to -800.
-Occasionally, in the middle of a game, it will lock up for a second or two and then everyone gets auto-dropped, followed by "a p-p-p-p-p-p-player has left the game".
-Sometimes, for no apparent reason, the game will stop trying to connect you to one person--it appears that the game doesn't even acknowledge that person's presence even though his name appears--so you can never get into the lobby and must abandon the effort.
-It takes FOREVER to get into a lobby even when all goes well, giving one the impression that there are connectivity problems. This game uses SupCom's engine, which uses a similar P2P system. In SupCom, everyone was connected to each other within seconds if you had ports forwarded properly. At worst, you'd have to rejoin if something went wrong, and that wasn't too painful. In this game it feels like you should win an achievement for just being able to get in the freaking lobby. If this minutes-long connection dance is a feature of whatever fancy NAT system or netcode gymnastics you guys tried to do, this game won't last very long.
-Most Pantheons have a list of players you are connecting to, but half of them are just names with blank boxes that don't tell you their connection status, and they have 0 ping in the game. Are these AIs that have taken the place of players that have failed to connect? It doesn't feel like I'm playing humans sometimes, because when people leave the game, their name remains, but they are an AI. The game NEVER says who is an AI and who is still human, and it sucks the fun out when you don't even know if you're owning some nublet or just some AI. It's even worse if you suspect half your own team is AI when you are losing, because you feel like the game cheated you.
About 75% of games seem to fail before they even start, and 25% of the ones that start inexplicably fail in the middle, some for no apparent reason at all. This game's connectivity problems are far from over.
The router I'm using has my computer in the DMZ, and it's fairly new, so ports are not the problem.
Connection to host "timed out" usually means what?
Right well here are the issues I am having:
1/ Automatching - when it os forming a game, you can see a list of who is connecting to who. Except as mentioned above, some players have absolutely NOTHING in their boxes - i.e. they will never connect. And then the game starts with them as AI. Why? All evening I have seen the same player names in every game I have played who never seem to connect to anyone and end up as AIs in game. Half of each game are AI players.
2/ What is worse is that there is no way to know who is AI and who isnt as the game doesnt indicate so - you just have to assume everyone with 0 ping is an AI as their player name remains.
3/ The game is very low tolerance for lag spikes. If you get a single spike, you are automatically disconnected. If you missed the message that suddenly told you you were disconnected from everyone else and don't check pings, you may carry on playing not even realising you are now playing a SP game!
4/ In the lobby if you quit a game because you know a number of AI players are going to join (because of point 1), the connection window in the corner remains all the way to the main game menu. In fact it bugs the game forcing a full restart. There are a number of bugs like this relating with connections that require game restarts (just try it!).
Basically you need to:
A/ Make it clear who is AI and who is a player
B/ Do not allow games to start with AI players like this - some games seem to not have players connecting to anyone. Why are they not removed from that game lobby and replaced by someone that can?
C/ Remove the ultra low tolerance for lag - if someone lags for a moment in counterstrike, they sure are not kicked! I have a DSL connection, but the occasional 1 second spike and Im gone?
D/ Run through the MP process and just see the buggy nature of it - how were they missed in the process?
The game is fantastic, it really is but these issues are strange because they surely should have been noted in testing? I have faith you will resolve them quickly though.
I just tried and here are my results: 1 out of 12 attempts= 1 game played mostly "attemt failed" thing hopefully it will be fixed soon
Thats sucks dude, as i said above though in my post. Yesterday i had about the 70% problems online when in games (same as you did), but today its been 100% for me 4/4 ive been able to play,etc..
Hope it improves for you bud!
