Hey everyone, I was reading an article on Gamespot today about how Killzone 2 had sold 1 million copies when amidst all the stupid fanboy comments there was this one:

I think the problem with KZ2 is the recent study that came out that determined that 72% of those who purchased KZ2 were homosexuals, 28% of those having "civil partners". I don't want people misconstruing my message and thinking there's something hidden in there. I'm not infering anything, mind you. I'm just saying, I have no problem with civil unions or same-sex marriage. I think that if the large contigent of KZ2 owners want to live their lives that way, I think they should have the freedom to do so. There's NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. But, many people don't want to be associated with a game where the majority of owners are people who belong to a "controversial" sub-group of the culture.I think it's sad that, in this day and age, people just can't buy a game and play it without being looked down upon for their sexual preferences.
My first question is, is this one of the most irrelevant and offensive comments you've ever seen? I mean really, it completely unrelated to anything going on in the discussion. My second question is: Why are people so incredibly stupid and how do you deal with it? Now I know people say just ignore it, but people said that about Hitler too and look where that got us. I guess I'm really just here to vent my frustration but seriously what is everyone else's opinion on the matter?
Recently we have had a problem in my high school (which is located in an upper middle class suburb in Ohio) with people continually using "gay" and "faggot" as adjectives to describe anything they don't like. There is even a girl in my math class who simply shortens it to "TSG", text-messaging style. We had an LGBT-equality protest today. Only me and around ten other perople (in a school with over 1800 students) showed up. An average football game usually draws in several hundred.
I dont see anything wrong with what he/she/it said. By now everyone knows that you only take what you need on the internet and dont bother with the rest. If those comments are useful to someone else then so be it. There are stupid people everywhere and the internet is no exception. No need to be frustrated and I suggest you go on with your life. If this simple statement insults you to the point of frustration then I suggest you go back under your bed and hide for the rest of your life. The world we live in is unfair and hard, you're gonna have to learn to accept it and deal with it. Thats what life is all about, learning, evolving and becoming better then we are right now!
Yeah, it's sad.
In high school, this one A-hole would say "that's Jewish" in regards to things he didn't like.
Now, I'm an atheist, and I was then too, but that doesn't change the fact that he needed to be hit in the face with a rolling pin.
Only gay people play Killzone?
Oh crap. Oh crapohcrapohcrap.
I know what you're saying Dragoon but you can't honestly say that after so long the idiots don't eventually get to you.
First question, no. That's hilarious, perfectly executed, and apparently below your radar. Sarcasm, it's your friend.
Second question(s), because people are effectively a herd animal. You deal with it by posting sarcastic shit on a forum in excellent form so that you can laugh at said idiots when they respond obliviously.
For anyone else that doesn't get it, it's a roundabout method of calling people fags. In the non-serious manner that is commonly done for amusement between marginally intelligent individuals capable of discerning between actual criticism and absurdity for the sake of absurdity.
Yes, there are always idiots who want to subjegate others. They are also protected by free speech (at least in most web-friendly countries), so you can't just shut them down. Thus, the greatest quandry of modern government: how do you keep stupid people from changing the government while allowing smart people to participate in it.
I fail to see why this should be offensive, it simly points out that if Killzone 2 is stronly associated with gays, then anyone uncomfortable with being thought of as gay themselves might steer clear to avoid suspicion.
The only issue I see here is the actual statement that 72% of Killzone 2 buyers are homosexuals, presumably a made up statistic for the purposes of the post, but other than that, so what?
Of course the idiots will get to you from time to time. The real question is how do you trump their crap in the long term. I was born a few years before the Stonewall riots, and there was absolutely no such thing as an openly gay student in my early-'80s North Florida high school. I've already lived to see not just a high school of sorts named for Harvey Milk, but to see a time when fear of queers is righteously good material for the Comedy Central New Hour. It could be lots, lots, worse. Concentration camps worse. Which is also good to keep in mind.
Could be worse true, but it could also be much better. Even in 'open-minded' vancouver we have hate crimes that occured far too frequently.
Indeed. Just because we aren't actively hunting down "sodomites" any more does not mean we can stop trying to improve this (and other) countries. Although sometimes it seems like an uphill battle.......
I like George Takei's response to another homophobe.

The sad part is, if people read the baseless accusations people post, they are often comparable to the post of shade1978x except they are being completely serious so no one would know that he was or was not being sarcastic. Also, a concept some people can't quite grasp the concept that sarcasm is largely based upon the intonation of voice which we (hopefully) all know is not translated through text. Sarcasm tends to have some sort of humor in it, and when no humor is present it makes that person who used that "sarcasm" stupid and ignorant. In my personal experiences, sarcasm can really only be portrayed through text when you actually are familiar with the opinions of the person who said it. Also, psychoak I would kindly ask you not to talk down to me because I am fully aware of what sarcasm is and when it is appropriate. Now maybe you identify this as sarcasm because its taken out of context, but if one were to read the other comments of this person they would most likely get the impression they were being quite serious.
America is a country where everyone makes fun of everything.
Whites make fun of Blacks. Blacks make fun of Whites. Straights make fun of Gays. Gays make fun of Whites. Northerners make fun of Southerners. Southerners make fun of Northerners.
Point is; don't take anything seriously. If someone really thinks like that; sucks to be them. Although, chances are they, that they're just making a (bad) joke.
How did he get that 72% figure? My guess is it is based on a poll which asks if you have ever been called 'gay' in multiplayer chat. 72% or higher would be an accurate figure for that.
Knowing the environment you're making a joke in also helps to make people rrealize you are joking. For instance, you wouldn't go into Camden, NJ and starting making jokes about black people, just like if the comment were made in a place were people tend to be rational it would have been appreciated for its humor.
And we come full circle (if you'll pardon the avatar pun) to the rampant homophobia in American youth culture. It seems that as the reasonable people create more reforms, the extremists get more, well, extreme. Which again brings up my problem as an amateur philosopher: how do you keep the extremists and idiots out of government without implimenting a system that can be abused by an unscrupulous leader to keep the reasonable and intelligent people out and let the extremists in?
But then again, what is a morally acceptable "position" on anything other than personal choices?
Heck they even mix National anthems with professional sporting events. What's so political in athletic performances that we pay to enjoy?
The idiot is never alone, s/he's always in a pack like wolfes. The smart simply ignores the carnivores and minds his own business when superfluous insults come from all sides.
Religion & Science already tried domination on humanity - and both failed gloriously.
Individuality is the secret of modern times. Freedoms & Liberties demonstrate it, daily.
True, but when the idiots stop huring insults and start hurling stones or pipe-bombs, you need to take some level of action. I think it's about finding the right balence between order and freedom.
I found out my best friend was gay many years ago. He's a sheriff; a huge hairy musclebuilder (I'm embarassed to say, if you saw us both together, you'd proably pick me as the gay one). He's pretty tolerant about gay jokes/humor, but, he refuses to play online games because of the constant "that's gay" or "fag/homo" comments people use to insult anything negative. I never even thought about it way back then (before he told me), but it's almost the year 2010, and you still see it constantly. REALLY ticks me off. I'd give half my retirment fund if I could teleport my sheriff friend nose to nose with the next guy that wrote "fag".
If at some point you feel that some jerk is getting under your skin, just ignore him/her/it. Dont take anything too seriously especially when it comes from someone you dont even know. Before getting frustrated, leave the room/internet/tv and go do something you like. Dont give in to the stupid games some people are playing, its not worth it. Life is too short, dont waste it trying to deal with idiots, you will lose precious moments you could have shared with someone you love or with yourself. At the end of the day think positive, dont let negative "energies" affect you and do what you want in your life. No matter what path you choose there will always be positive and/or negative consequences to your choices. But that does not matter because those will be your choices and no one elses. So live your life the way you want it to be and dont pay attention to what other people are thinking. BE YOURSELF!!!!!
Well, if it gets THAT physical there's always legitimate defense -- but the wolves are wise & cunning.
I maigeri'ed a few of my own just to clear the path - but those were after my wallet and car. I've got the scars to prove it. But that was a specific personal situation, right?
I've seen protest in streets that became riots but strangely, "infiltrators" were targeted by police with a fair amount of success. See, order works - in the civilized societies.
Great post and point.
Anyone who avoids a product because of (questionable) rumors about it being associated with a certan group of people is a moron. Either you like that product or you don't. Grow up people.
Everyone is an idiot. You, me. Only question is how much of one are you, which is to say 1. under what circumstances do you do stupid crap, and 2. how often are the planets aligned to allow these circumstances to exist.
At the very least the people who admit that they are just as dumb as everyone else have the intellectual advantage of awareness.
Which means I win.
