Explanation
Your first two abilities should be penitence and shield. While penitence at this level does only 200 damage, it still provides two debuffs that can help the first blood, and gives you the much needed ranged capability you lack.
Shield is there to provide the invulnerability for you or your teammates early game, if your opponent is sure that he will get a kill, using it can and will mostly shift the tide of the battle. Use it wisely as its cooldown is quite big. Also, time your shield usage. If you’re facing a torch bearer and you see he’s going to shatter combo you, pop up shield for him to blow his mana and cooldowns on a brick wall. Also, if needed, don’t be afraid to shield and teleport out.
Divine Justice at level 3 is there to provide a bit of staying power. It will heal around 40hp and 40mana for each of the early melee creeps you kill.
Priority will be to max up Penitence and Soul Power. You will hit hard due to Soul Power, and when your opponent notices you hit hard, he won’t be able to outrun or escape due to Penitence damage and slow. On team fights, Penitence the focus target to make sure the extra damage debuff is maximized.
Last stand at level 9, well, you’re not expected to die a lot as an Oak, but when you do and Last stand activates, make sure you bring at least 1 down with you. You have 10 seconds of invulnerability and increased attack speed/move speed to pursue your opponent.
From here on, you will start to really get noticed on the battlefield. From 11 to 14 take points in dead ward and maximize your spirits. Each spirit will increase your damage, and soon enough you’ll start hitting quite hard. Remember that keeping your spirits alive will keep your damage up, but do not be afraid to suicide them if you can bring a tower down with it.
If the game reaches level 17+, start using Surge of faith on your creep waves. Waves pushing harder (better with catas) and hitting faster will make short work of towers and be quite a nuisance to enemy demigods.
Starting Items
Scroll of teleporting
Combat healing potion
Banded Armor (requires a few seconds of waiting, but you’ll be able to accompany the first creep wave)
Item Progression
Each match is diferent, item order will depend on your needs and what enemy demigods are present.
-> arrows mean "upgrade to". If you are able to buy the end item without the transition item, even better.
Boots of speed –> Journeyman treads
Scaled Helm –> Vlemish Faceguard
Banded armor –> Nimoth Chest Armor –> Groffling Warplate
Unbreakable boots –> artifact late game (Honorable mention to Belt of the Giants)
Wyrmskin Handguards –> Doomspite Grips
Heart of life
Item explanation
Boots of speed – treads - Use these as you see fit. Upgrade from boots to treads if you see your being outrun by fleeing enemies. Penitence helps in this, so, most of the games, boots are enough.
Scaled helm is a transition you might well skip. Vlemish faceguard will provide you with enough mana and mana regen for this Oak build.
Banded armor – Nimoth – Groffling will keep your armor and health high enough to survive a melee death match
Unbreakable boots are a cheap boost to hp, health and health regen, a great item overall for stat boost.
Wyrmsking Handguards gives a solid damage boost and an amazing proc on pursuing enemies. Endgame, Doomspite will guarantee a dps boost that will make opponent demigods afraid of meleeing you.
Heart of life - when you use shield on yourself during a close combat, use your Heat of life. Youl will gain around 1000 hp and 1000 mana during the thick of battle, no interruption or cast time, enough to throw your opponent off balance or allow an extra penitence. Also, you’ll never have to return to base to heal/get mana with this trinket.
Belt of the giants - Granting you a cleave attack and a huge boost to hp to boot. Cleaving attack allows you be hitting an enemy demigod, and still hitting troops around, making sure you proc Divine justice healing you and those around you
Idols
Expensive items that allow you to summon minions under your control. This Oak build is not dependant of idols, as it focuses much more on battlefield staying power, killing power and close combat support.
Valor items
Dependant on your account and personal preferences. But if your able to pick, blood of the fallen is a great pick for its hp boost and regen, as is cloak of night, providing oak a cheap teleport to get in and out of battle.
Quick mention
I can’t end this guide without giving credit to ViridShaman and his Lord Erebus guide( you can find it here: http://forums.demigodthegame.com/346497).
I'd rather have the shield and penitence. Interrupting people scrolling back to base and saving fleeing allies is what it's all about.
Ehh, I think that penitance is great, but in the long run it just doesnt compare to the power of spirits. Sure, you can hit the target all the way back to base...but your spirits can.
Surge of faith is his most important skill next to penitance and you're waiting til the end to get it?..
And last stand is just counting on dying. I tend to not die.
You should put 2 points into raise dead earlish on since each one is worth like +10 damage.
Not to mention, Surge of Fiath is what makes divine justice so good. You're about to die then you shield, surge of faith, get healed from all the creeps killed, attack speed bonus, and finish someone off.
Also you didn't really note how amazing shield is to be used on yourself or an ally to chase someone past frontline towers early on to get the kill.
So tbh I mostly disagree with this..
I personally don't use Surge of Faith and do fine. Different ways to play my friend, different ways to play
Trully, if one thing we can say for sure, is that everyone has its personal way to play with the oak
I tried a lot of ways and I really don't like the one depicted here. I seem to fair much better overall with my army of spirits and minions.
Getting Surge of Faith as soon as it's available is a battle changer and often switches the momentum to the team with Oak. Hell, if ennemy Demigods don't take you out in battle with grunts around, they are in for some serious troubles.
Oak alone can hold off up to 3 Demigods at Citadel by helping the waves of grunt.
Surge of faith combined with Penitence is amazing - Slow + dmg debuff on your opponent and then increases move/attack speed. Really good, love this ability. It allows you to chase down a hero and then smack them to death.. if you get in trouble you just shield + pot/port out.
Level 2 shield is a bare necessity. It allows for you to invuln yourself and use a rejuv pot or some other healing item and basically start the fight again.
I dont use shield, I prefer getting last stand for those points instead. Shield can save you, but it is FAR more satisfying to watch Oak chase down a DG like an angry housewife with a frying pan. Can't out run him, can't kill him, can only pray he doesnt kill you.
i heard a rumor that there's a hidden bonus achievement worth 200 favor points that you get if you you manage to type "For the Alliance!" while you're teleporting back to your Health Stone while Shielded.
ROFL!
Dont play oak...Erebus is better
Wow. I just did my 5th game with Oak and this time I WAS DOMINATING THE WHOLE TEAM LOL
6th game. Leading in kills. It's crazy Oak. I didnt think I could kill other Demigod so easily with it.
Yeah I only have one point into shield for immunity and run away
My built start out as a farmer then at mid game becomes a demigod killer then it morph into a building destruction at the end game.My built max out on:Raise Dead WardSoul PowerPenitence1 point on Divine Justice (should pick this between level 2-4).The rest on + stats (this is where the building destruction comes into play).I find that Divine Justice doesn't work well on this built in the end game unless you are losing because by this time your minions will do almost all of the killing . It work well at the start and mid game. You can replace the + with Divine Justice.
Nice guides, thanks!
I think the back and forth between Oak players is great. It shows that there are multiple viable builds for this character. Great guide.
Awesome guide,
Penitence, shield and divine justice is the way to go but I like to keep a back door open. Last stand. I cant tell how many times I have wished during battle that I had invested 1 point into it. Any DG that goes toe to toe with OAk will have just as many wounds to like after they deal the killing blow to me.
Aside from Regulus's snipe ability it is the best way for a "RIGHT BACK AT YOU". steal the victory dance from the victor. MAHAHAHA
Long live the OAk
