...to try it. And just moments ago, I bought it.
Just showing you guys that download-to-try pirates do exist
My major concern is how well the game will run. From what I have seen I assume I will like the game as long as the performance is fine. Yeah I am pushing this demo
I got it yesterday to try it, bought it today.
So far i haven't been able to play it tho since it has been trying to find a game for about 30 minutes now, really hope this will be fixed asap as a multiplayer game with no multiplayer isnt much fun...
This is why you make the full version downloadable for free (via torrent, no reason eating SD bandwidth) by everyone but make them pay to play multiplayer and patch.
Not really. You'd lose percieved value that way. But when you stop and think about it, this is what they're already doing... just not officially.
Well, since Demigod involves P2P connexion between all players, you really need the demo to see if you can do some multiplayer.
Never had a problem with online multiplayer before. WoW being the most recent one. I can only assume that the connection to the multiplayer server is the important part, and will allow play. But yes, a demo would be fantastic before I go and blow $50 on a game I can't play.

I agree with the original post. I know many people who download to try. Demigod especially is one (no lan for retail copy until updated) where the not-online version basically IS a demo. I know other people still who do things like buy a $50 game and split the price... then they just share the game because they feel that $25 is a reasonable price for the purchase, but neither would be able or willing to spare $50 for it (this is especially true for console games I've seen). Sometimes its just not a $50 game but is still marked as one. (sometimes it is, but is marked lower for some reason.)
This is coming from a guy who works in the games industry. I need game sales to pay for my way of life, but I don't feel that getting your head in a knot because some people are not as lawful as others. The important part is that the developers get paid for the amount of enjoyment they give to others.
Especially if future patches hold improvements like what we've seen for Sins of a Solar Empire and Galactic Civilizations, then this game is going to have many sales.
People need to understand that P2P in gaming and torrenting is not the same thing. As far as the ISP is concerned, the ingame P2P is you connecting to several web servers.
That's the thing, there really is no multiplayer server like WoW or even a host player like Starcraft. AFIK every player sends their data to every other player instead of player to server to other players. Depending on how exactly SD does that will determin if you university would block it or not.
They either block ports, or they look at the headers. Headers are a no-issue (since it's different from BT's), but for some reason Stardock chose to use port ranges which include the BitTorrent port ranges.
I would imagine it's both. I spent a fairly long time trying to sneak packets around filters and could never figure out a way to do it. Now, I'm not ALL that network savvy, but nothing I tried would work. I attempted once to mask the outbound signals as something else (SOCKS) through a proxy and then decode them when I got them back. I never could get it to work, but my Uni has successfully killed all BT and P2P traffic inside their network.
It sucks.
Ok, here is my problem with this post.
Should there be demos? Yes
Should the developers take time away from developing the game before release to deal with said demo? Personal Preference (I think they should wait)
Do I think pirating the game is a viable option if you're looking to try before you by: If that's what you're actually doing, and not just using it as an excuse, then sure.
So where is my problem with this? Well, chiefly because I can garentee that most of the people who claim they're just "trying it" never really planned to buy it in the first place. Which, honestly, I don't care, but if that's what you're going to do, keep it to yourself or own up to it. And while I have no remorse for the larger conglomorates like the MPAA and RIAA who are more concerned with trying to utilize lawsuits as a new form of income than hash out with people what media is "worth" in this new digital age and why it's worth it, there are a scant few companies that can really be considered "not evil" anymore, and Stardock is one if them. I mean, honestly, it's stuff like this that makes everyone look bad and makes progress impossible.
All I can say is I put up a few bucks on faith nearly half a year ago, got some fun out of it during the beta, a chance to help shape the game (thanks to the eager ears of the devs) and here at the end, I can't say I regret any of it.
I really hope the multiplayer aspect of the game becomes playable soon, or I'll feel as though I should have stuck with the pirated version.
Well, the multiplayer aspect and the part where I am not allowed to actually play the game 90% of the time because the menu does not feel like working.
DG without a serial is a demo
Downloaded pirate version first , i liked the game so i bought it. Sometimes games might only seem good so its better to try it first. And i'm trying as much as i can to buy all games i like because i know the companies spend alot of money making them.
Kinda regretting this now, considering all the problems. I hope they get it sorted out soon.
If the lack of a SN keeps you from getting patches, perhaps. Otherwise its just a free game for folks like me who don't play online mp.
They are? Sounds like a good idea to me!
PS. Hi Gir! Its jpw007 from OCN
Same here. Downloaded the pirate version. Game made a good impression. So yesterday i bought it directly from Impulse.I don't think it's such an uncommon thing that pirates buy the games they like.
Err, sorry. But I'm serious about this whole pirate-to-try thing. I don't think I play any games I don't own. As long as there's no other way to guarantee my money isn't being wasted... Anyway, this has already been hashed and rehashed.
Sweet. Thanks.
I need to wait the demo so that can try the online connection part before buy. Seem that normally when Asia player play with europe or US, we always get high ping, dunno is it worth to buy or not if not much Asia players at here.
SOCKS or other proxies merely pass your data through another host, they don't encode or encrypt it, so it would still be detected as BT traffic. What you had to do was use something with encryption, like SSH tunnelling.
In general, they block port 6112 (the default BT port) and sniff for the BT headers. I would also imagine they check for behavior which is typical of P2P applications - opening many connections to many hosts. That behavior is actually also typical of a virus which attempts to exploit a weakness in some program to infect a system. (they try as many hosts as they can in hopes of finding one which has this weakness)
I like the simple approach..
Pirateing is wrong
Wait for the Demo or buy the game
IMHO
Cheers; Snarl
Unfortunately, the world isn't simple.
Also, is it truly "pirating" if I honestly want to just try it before I buy it? If the end result is the company gets money from me OR I delete the game, is it truly pirating at all?
You sound like a greedy corporate rep.
"Grr...Snarl....Just buy our game damnit. Gimme your money!!!! Snarl...Slurp."
Seriously, if the company believes that their product is worth buying, they won't be afraid of pirates. And here we see Stardock. DRM-free means that the company believes that its product is good enough that they'll still make their money without having to piss off paying customers. Everything I've seen says that this is true. SD puts out quality products.
And I AM waiting for the Demo. But if I can get a test experience out of a pirate version SOONER so I know if I want to buy it, what's the difference?
