As far as I can tell alot of the problems from generals is the fact that their minions are too weak and a minion build of a general is inferior to one that plays like an assassin. I think theres a few simple ways to solve this.
1: Change generals skills so that they affect their minions. Each general should have at least 2 minion specific skills.Maybe something so simple as some kind of "frenzy" ability where all the minions hit harder or something. More complex ones would be a plus.
2: Give each different minion type a skill. Not something gamebreaking, maybe it would only be useful in certain situations. It should vary across types.
3: Drop Idols, These just hurt generals as they have to spend their money on these, Alot of people dont even use idols with their generals. To replace these, give each general a total of 2-3 unique minion types that have distinct differences. It would also be cool if they were attained if different ways (E.G-One type is just summoned like yetis and bramblers and another type might appear like Oaks spirits)
Now obviously this would be alot of work so I wouldnt be expecting anything like this for a while, But I think this would be a much better alternative to dropping generals alltogether (as frogboy has hinted at might be the solution). Also this would make generals harder to play as you would have to manage all the abilitys of your units and think more tactically, but generals are there for those who wanted to play an rts
Yeah Generals need a large overhaul!
Scrapping idols is a great idea and a large step in the right direction.
I would say, in my opinion that is that the idea of a general in this game is sort of pointless. Maybe have 1 or 2 demigods that cans command units, but over all I hardly ever see any "General" class Demigod going a summon minion build, this games all about the Fist Pumping Powerhouse and how much nuke damage someone can issue in as little time as possible... Generals have no place amongst this play style. Have a General class on your team that goes Minions is almost like giving the other team a handicap.
Again, just my opinion

I've played a few games with QoT and she seemed ok...At least on SP Hard mode I did fine.
Only issues I felt were slightly annoying were there was no indicator of how many of your minions were alive... I felt I had to keep clicking the summon button for the minions to see if I would get a full army message, and with the Shamblers you didn't get this message and basically could just keep summoning and if you couldn't see how many you had, you just clicked it twice to get the full 4. Just a slight annoyance...
Other slight annoyance was the selecting of the general and the minions, yes they ahve the button to select the minions but if you wanted to move the QoT you have to click her, becuase the minions will stay selected til you off click them. And I'm not sure if you can rebind the keys for the selecting since I have an ergo keyboard and the selection keys are on the bad side (n,m, etc)... More so a slight annoyance again.
Generals seem a little more micro(or is it macro) then the Assasins...
Micro, for micromanagement, and they are designed to be more micro management.
They have their place, if they're done right, they're support classes, and their ability to control units means they can push the front foward in lanes they're not actively in, which can be used effectively in situations, they can also do distractions and the like. I agree with OP, they each deserve specific summonable units and ditching the idols.
Minions can actually put out decent damage with a good item build as well as going down the right trees. I have had a few very dominating games with oak. I also believe each general gets there own unique summon unit and those can get pretty beefy as well.
I can honestly say that the entire left side of the Demigod selection screen gets little to no use from me. This agian, might just be my opinion, as I don't really enjoy being the support cast, I would hate to see Generals stay the way they are, they almost seem like secondary options. They only have 1 specific minion that goes with their flavor.
However, this is simply a nice conversation, we all know Stardock and GPG will fix the issue. They seem to be on top of the game as far as being part of the community and taking what fans say seriously. Hats off to GPG for an awesome game, look forward to becoming an active member of Demigod community!
