Hi! everyone, I have a simple question, what was the first PC game that you have played and loved?
For me it was Dune 2: The Building of a Dynasty.
It was way back in 1993 (cant believe its been already 16 years) on my IBM 486 with all 4MB of ram. Since that time I have played over a 100 PC games, but I was wondering what was other people's gaming debut. Feel free to elaborate on the subject (what year, at home, at a friend, how much you paid).
first pc games I played was diablo ('95 I think), but it was on and off and a friends computer and barely understood anything, because it was all english. though you probably don't need to undestand much to play that game.
first game I owned was myth: fallen lords and wing commander prophecy. played them more or less simultenously. the former started me off the strategy trail that I have adhered to ever since.
that said, I played video games some time before that. mostly the snes and mega drive (genesis) generation games. not even sure anymore, which system came first, I think genesis, so something like sonic would be my first video game ever. lol, though actually some friends had a nes too where I played some age-old ninja turtles game a few times.
For my first PC (not comm 64), Star Trek Judgement Rites, shortly followed by Doom.
My first was frogger for the pc, i think I sill have it.
First computer game ? I can't remember, it was sooo long ago ! And it was my brother's computer. It was some kind of silly obscure platformer on Atari 65 XE. I played many 8bit games, including classics like Spy vs Spy (1,2,3), Spindizzy (Marble Madness clone), Colony, Archon (1,2), Ultima III Exodus (original, including box, cloth map and manuals - would you believe it, in 90' Poland ?), M.U.L.E., Gauntlet ...
On first PC (it was 486 SX 33 MHz, 4 MB RAM, 170 MB HDD- the strongest CPU Quake does not run on !) it was two games. Scorched Earth and Archon Ultra. Doom2 soon followed (we only had Atari before that and missed the original DooM and Wolfenstein).
I was given my own PC around the times of Quake 3.
Think the first game I played on a computer (some type of Apple II) was Castle Wolfenstein. That was in junior high so was about 1984 or so. First game I played on an IBM PC freshman year of high school, 1985 and it was some type of space exploration game, where you had to mine planets, I can't remember the name though... arghh. Really liked it except you had to use one of those stupid paper wheels put together as a form as DRM.
First game I actually bought was first semester in college in 1989 and was SimCity. Damn it seemed awesome at the time! Not sure if that was for the 8088 4.77 Mhz monster or maybe the first 80286 we had.
Caesar 3, good old days
I miss 2d games when developers could focus completely on gameplay, the amount of quality releases in recent years is kind of depressing =/ Only developers I follow are Blizzard and GPG at this point and I'm not a fan of the dota style gameplay so I'll be waiting for elemental.
So funny that the OPs is Dune 2. So was mine! When i saw the title i thought about it and it came to me after i sifted thorugh the cobwebs of my memory. That game was gold. Never played Dune 2000 though or emperor:Battle for Dune.
Westwood forever FUCK EA
EDIT: i also rememebr playing roger Wilco's Space Adventure. there were like 4 of them i think. ahhh man memories.
The first games I have strong memories of are the Crystal Caves series for DOS, also DOOM
Getting into more serious games, Civilization II when I was 7ish then Starcraft, Diablo II, Age of Empires II and it sort of just exploded into the gamer that I am now.
The Bard's Tale: Tales of the Unknown. Had it on a series of floppies with no documentation or anything. Figured it all out and somewhere got a copy of the spells list (I was 11. In order to cast a spell in that game you needed to know it's 4 letter code.) That was back when you could save your party on a seperate floppy and keep disk-swapping characters back to your main group to farm them for gold/items...)
Other titles around that time that I will always remember fondly: Ghostbusters, Bruce Lee, Karateka, Below the Root, Airborn Ranger, Zak McKraken and the Alien Mindbenders....
I have the game and cloth map at my desk here at Stardock along with my Atari ST1040.
Skipping consoles (Coleco Telstar, Atari 2600, Intellivision, Odyssey II) and the Commodore 64. The first computer game that I really recall playing was an early Ultima on a Macintosh in high school. The first strictly PC game I recall playing was actually...well, two games at roughly the same time: Steve Jackson Games' Ogre and some kind of World War II flight simulator that let me fly an SBD Dauntless in the Battle of Midway. That was in 1988 or 1989, and I didn't get back to PC games until 1994, when I picked up my own PC (486) and picked up a slew of games: X-Wing, TIE Fighter, Doom, Doom II, Heretic, Flying Carpet, Sim City, Star Control II, Master of Orion, Civilization 2, Descent, Rise of the Triad, and so on.
I guess of all of those, I played Doom first. I still regret not purchasing The Elder Scrolls: Arena, X-Com: UFO Defense or Master of Magic when I saw them on the shelves - I have played those since, but it's not the same.
I'm also missing numerous other games. I recall that my cousin (who was living with me, and also had his own PC) was constantly playing my games, too... Fun times.
I loved that crazy recycling game! Does anyone know what it was called? I've been looking for the name for a while but haven't been able to find it.
Many a moon ago X-Wing vs Tiefighter got me PC gaming.I believe that was played on a Cyrix 233 built computer.
Oh wow, I remember that game so well...especially the challenge where you had to get a ball in one of the hoops (though you had several "balls" and several ramps, and you could even put sand and oil on there...epic.) Also recall playing with those "chimps" on was a PAIN, you'd just complete a challenge like the lever, weights, whatever, only to have your BRAND SPANKIN' NEW OWN THE ENEMY'S MACHINE PART wacked right out of you.
Some of my first games: royal flush pinball (I think that's what it was called), neverhood, Jurrasic Park: Chaos Island (really fun game, my first "RTS", though it had several puzzle elements), Motoracer, 3D pinball (actually tried to install on my quad core...came up with an error: integer divide by zero...), and several others
HOLY HELL! so THAT was the name of that jurassic part RTS. I remember playing it in a computer store years and years and years ago and I never could remember the name!
By 3d pinball do you mean hyper 3d pinball? I still have the disk for that around here somewhere...
actually, I think it was "ultra 3d pinball".
I have the box on a shelf above me and "hyper" is whats written there. Could it be that they are the same game and package differently? Hyper 3d has IIRC a space table, a mobster table, a circus table, a frankenstein table, a fantasy sort of table that I don't recall very well and I think one more...
I can't remember what was first but two stick out in my mind. X-com and Master of Magic.
I actually had the demo for Descent on my family's first computer, so that was technically the first game I owned.
Made me queasy, but it was awesome!
Oh man Descent. I played the heck out of the demo. Nowadays I can hardly imagine how I did it without a joystick. That was the first ever game I played that allowed you to turn upside down and keep going.
Same here, I still play Oregon Trail.. it's so simple yet so entertaining. lol
Math Blasters too, that was great.
ahh childhood memories..
Man, my parents were total dictators when it came to gaming and stuff that wasn't educational.. I didn't get to play any sort of PC games till I was like 16 when my neighbor gave me a (yea, pirated) copy of a bunch of old Sega Gensis games. Shining Force, Sonic the Hedgehog.. Volutron.. it was great.
Been addicted ever since. Thank Piracy or I'd never been a PC Gamer. LMAO
awe.. I killed the thread...
sorry... lol
Bad MishYu, stop killing things.
