ShelbyGT and myself were having a discussion about computers and updating them when we hit on the idea of how cool it would be if Stardock were to have computers sytems for sale. Think about it now, they could be pre-certified to run Stardock software/games and preloaded with Impulse for those folks that all ready have purchased software or have subscriptions to ObjectDesktop, just sign in and download. It should take care of all the 'Stardock software won't run on my system' threads in the fourms.
Hmm, wonder if this idea has ever seen the light of day at Stardock?
As you can imagine any venture like this would have to be thought out before attempting it.
1. It would have to make a profit.
2. Who builds it, Stardock or do you out source it?
3. What OS is loaded on it?
4. Do you offer a 'Good', 'Better' and 'Best' system configuration?
5. Would the existing Stardock support structure be able to handle it?
6. Would anyone buy a computer from Stardock?
So what do you think folks, should Stardock look at this? Would you be interested? What would you like to see in a system (Good, Better, Best). I have no idea if this is even possible or even being thought about at Stardock but lets see your comments of what you think. It would be great to hear from some SD reps or even the Frog himself.
Logic would seem to dictate that Stardock would have to be competent with the hardware in order to make the great software that they do. If the question is building the computers based upon specs set by Stardock, then there is always out sourceing
We're not going to get into making PCs for the general public. We're a software company. But for our OEM partners, we do like to show what can be done with Windows and PC technology that is sometimes not obvious.
Oh poo, I guess that means I will have to buy one off the shelf then later this year when Win 7 is released. Darn.
You could always...build your own...
How about someone in the builder of PC's; that would like to include like Impulse with their OEM software. Which would be installed as a trial with the basic setup. Just as other software is with most other OEM's today.
Plus would a builder get anything if the software was bought from the trial install?
As for system design - thats depending on what the person reguires or wants in a system. Along with it being ready to run any and all Stardock software as well. Most of these specs are presented with the software and would be no problem making it fit to the users needs and/or wants for such a computer. That would be with or without the trial being activated to a purchased license.
The free programs included with Impulse would get things started for someone that has yet to see any Stardock programs. Thus allowing them to decide to buy or such with the programs installed already for use with a new builder system. Most builders as myself include a builder OEM licensed OS with any system built. Thus that along with Impulse and whatever OEM programs installed would work for sales of the system and that of Stardock programs.
But as I've asked here " Would the OEM get anything for a Stardock purchase because of the Impulse programs bought by the customer?
Just a interesting question Brad. I've seen other ways you offer this with links postings on to websites and so forth.
At least IMO this doesn't count as "building your own", but I suggest at least going to someone who does build them and having one built to your specs. Buying a computer with "some assembly required" is simply not an option for a lot of people. My next one might be the Dell store, as I wasn't really happy with the guy who did my current one.
newegg.com for my computer's parts. Just make sure to steer clear of mail in rebates... Of the three I had, I only got back money from one (got $40 back, but was supposed to get another $10 and $30).
The best part about building your own is you can cut out quite a bit from the price tag which would otherwise have gone to pad the pockets of some computer company.
I won't be building a new one... or waiting for Frogboy to change his mind about Stardock builds, but I soon will be replacing my AMD Athlon 64 x2 6400 Black Edition @ 3.4 with a Phenom II x4 940 Black Edition quad @ 3.0... and my Nvidia 8800GT @ 512 with a Nvidia 9800GTX @ 1gb... and will replace the 2gb of DDR@ 800 RAM I poached for another rig to bring this one back to 8gb. Total cost AUD$679.00
I'd like to be able to go the Intel i7-940 route with 12 gb of DDR3 RAM with a Nvidia GTX 295, but that'd mean a new mobo as well and would cost in well excess of AUD$2000.00 at current prices/exchange rates.
Oh well, the Phenom II 940 and 9800GTX will do me nicely.
He** no!! impulse requires the buyer to have microsoft no protection internet explorer to work. Which means if microsoft were to ever be outdone by mac stuff stardock will go down the drain with them. Stardock is pratically married to microsoft, They think that all new computers come with internet explorer and so impulse will always work with every new computer. It's true, one of their ignorant employees said that somewhere on these forums. That's stardocks official excuse for making impulse dependent on internet explorer. I guess people who make their own new computers and install a different OS on them besides windows or buy a new pc computer online and have it shipped with another OS besides windows are just experiencing a hullicination.
And some people actually want stardock to make computers? Why don't we just go back to windows 95 right now. It will be much better. Microsoft decided it could force Vista down people's throats and hailed the new OS as the OS for the next ten years. Guess what, businesses are still comfortable with windows 2000 and said no thanks and some even bailed and decided to go mac. And consumers decided to screw microsoft and stick with XP.
So now Microsoft to not loose its position on the world computer stage was forced to develop a new OS, Windows 7. I have friends and family who are programmers and one who instructored at a university in computer science. We all hate internet explorer. We all use firefox or something else. I haven't even met any higher education instructors that know how to use a computer and like internet explorer.
I've actually made my own browser. It's not as good as firefox so bragging rights aren't the point. My point being these stardock people should just make impulse work with firefox or make a new browser themselves. And the main point for this forum post is why would we want a company married to microsoft to make computers when the software they make is dependent on microsoft? That's completley rediculous. Microsoft already makes computers that are dependent on microsoft. We all know what the results would be, its happening right now.
Hey.
SD makes Windows software.
Wake up.
You didn't read my post. That's my point. Stardock makes microsoft stuff. Why do we need another computer that runs on microsoft stuff.
you wake up.
The magic mushrooms are strong this year
If given the opportunity, I'd love to see a Stardock-built PC......
lol.
"instructored"
I guess everyone can tell I am taking this way too seriously and made a new word in my haste.
Just a few counterpoints if you don't mind:
1:IE7 is both secure and reliable on a properly updated rig with any good AV/Security software and Windows Defender in use.
2: IE7 is the predominant browser in use today,it made good sense to optimize Impulse for it.
3:If you think Win95 is better than Vista you need better Computer Science Instructors.(Or some that aren't quite so "high")
4:Microsoft was not "forced" to develop Windows 7. It is part of their normal OS development cycle to replace OS's as technology advances.
Last but not least: toads may be stupid, but I know at least one very smart frog.
Yeah, much better go with Mac "we don't care about fixing vulnerabilities because our market share is so small".
Stardock is pratically married to microsoft
Ofc: they are Microsoft Gold Partners, as a lot of companies out there. And even without been a partner, a lot of companies develop for Microsoft because it makes sense to develop for the OS that has the biggest consumer market share. Pure businees.
They think that all new computers come with internet explorer and so impulse will always work with every new computer. It's true, one of their ignorant employees said that somewhere on these forums. That's stardocks official excuse for making impulse dependent on internet explorer
A lot of the IE components are used in other parts of the OS, so it's a good bet that they will be always around on a Windows machine.
I guess people who make their own new computers and install a different OS on them besides windows or buy a new pc computer online and have it shipped with another OS besides windows are just experiencing a hullicination.
People who decide to install a non-windows OS should do it knowing that a lot of programs are not going to work. If they don't know that they are deluding themselves or they have been deceived by someone.
W7 follows the normal release schedule of Windows versions except for XP to Vista (that was the really strange one). They weren't forced to make W7 any more than they are forced to develop the next Windows right now.
I have friends and family who are programmers and one who instructored at a university in computer science. We all hate internet explorer. We all use firefox or something else. I haven't even met any higher education instructors that know how to use a computer and like internet explorer.
You haven't searched hard enough.
Why? That doesn't make any sense sorry. IE is probably deployed in most of the computers that Stardock is targeting with its aplications. Why they should tie themselves with a browser that is not even the first one out there or spend money reinventing the wheel?
Btw, this post was written using Firefox 3.0.8.
That's for sure! Not only did you manipulate the English Language, you came across as an ill-informed Mac fanboi who likes to bash Microsoft and associated developers for the sake of it... so it's unlikely you'll get too many agreeing on a MS partner's site/forum.
Dunno about high... more like hiding under a rock for the last 14 - 15 years.
Scenes in the SD Office of each person glancing at the other thinking...."is HE one of the ignorant ones.....or am I?"
FUD
Hurried flustering panic to dig out appropriately huge tomes relating to software coding to demonstrate 'no ignorance here, mate'...
I would love to have a custom SD laptop!
I could only imagine the designs for the laptop shell, emblazoned with a huge SD logo on the top.
Heck even a sticker set to customize current laptops or desktop's would be killer. Something like this where one could choose a custom sticker set to dress up their hardware. http://www.vskins.com/ I mean if it can be done for a phone.. Why not a laptop or tower?
prebuilt systems dont make that much of a profit. let me throw a few words at you, alienware, dell *xps* are all overpriced, besides those who know what they want in a computer can usually build it them selves saving a ton of money in the prossess and getting something that will last them quite a bit longer.
Lets try and keep this simple: Windows still commands over 80% of the entire desktop OS market. Makes sense for companies to develop for the largest platform available.
If you're a windows hater, then why the hell do you come to a company which makes WINDOWS-ONLY software and games?
You sir win "Troll of the Day"
Ever noticed how some nicks really, really suit? ....
That would be a very good idea there HG. I think about the same way. Presently you can have these made to order for the computer. But it would be nice to see one at the Stardock Store along with the T-Shirts and other good stuff they offer.
Really cool!
Hehe, I'm always wearing my birthday suit... albeit under something else... stubbies and singlet, etc.
