Been poking around at the elemental forums and reading some of the stuff there and it's kinda made me want to play a fantasy game. Looking for recommendations.
I mainly play MMOG's and RTSs alongside 4x games. But love a good RPG when I can get my hands on them. Thing is I become rapidly bored with travel times and 1001 subquests. I play MMOG's - I wanna break from that =P. Couldn't even deal with running round a city in KotOR last time I fired it up.
I'm not much of a twitch gamer, I kinda get frustrated when I have to reload that game yet again because I missed the triple backflip and ended up in the lava/sea/bottomless pit yet again. Also get tired of trying to get rsi/carpal tunnel by clicking like a mad man when playing diablo.
Really really liked the small scale tactics of Disciples 2, tried to fire up Heroes of Might and Magic yet again, but that wasn't delievering. Anyone recommend an RPG/adventure game that is strong on storyline and extremely low on inventry/travel time and subquests?
Well Oblivion is open world, can do pretty much whatever you want and there's loads of mods so you can customize it however. As someone who's not usually into fantasy games, I found it a lot more approachable--and thus enjoyable--than a lot of the more "hardcore" stuff even though it does sacrifice some features for sleekness. It has a "fast travel" option so once you explore an area once you can instantly go back, and while there's a lot of subquests game is pretty nonlinear you can ignore them if you like. Lots of clicking since it's patterned after console FPSes, but its not a twitch game and most enemies go down after a few hits (clicks). It's kind of old hat now though, I guess, but worth picking up if you've not played it.
Well, you didn't say witch ones you already know so i'll yust throw some names at you
Gothic 2 and 3, Fallout 1+2+3(Not really fantasy bus as yo mentioned KOTOR), Neverwinter Nights 2 and Neverwninter Nights: Mask of the Betrayer, Mass Effect and may be some day Diablo 3
The Witcher: Enhanced Edition is absolutely superb, and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a fantasy RPG.
You should read some reviews to see if it's for you, though:http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/witcherenhancededition?q=witcher
You can also try the latest King's Bounty. It's a mix of RPG/adventure. Combat is not very dissimilar from Heroes of Might and Magic, but it's not a strategy game in that you don't build up towns and such, you just have your hero and you run around collecting goodies and doing stuff.
Kings Bounty is definitely worth the money in the fantasy genre. Other than that, www.gog.com has the original Fallouts for 5 €, both of them are a absolute must-have for anyone interested in RPGs.
I second The Witcher. It has a fantastic story and great voice acting and graphics while still having good gameplay and enjoyable combat. Only downside is that its on the long side (looking at 50-70 hours for a playthrough) which might not be a bad thing depending on what you're looking for.
Other ideas are mostly bioware games. If you haven't played Jade Empire its definitely worth getting it, Baldur's Gate+sequels, Mass Effect, etc.
Oblivion...doesn't have a great story, but has tons of stuff to do, Fallout is in the same boat (I finished the main story ridiculously fast and was sort of left hanging).
Neverwinter nights 2 and especially the first expansion is worth playing (mask of the betrayer probably has a better story and more interesting gameplay than the game itself), however the second expansion is pure unadulterated crap imho.
Witcher. 'Nuff said.
King's Bounty for sure, especially if it's a story you're looking for. It isn't so much the pc game equivalent of a page-turner, but it is the most inventive and creative game I've played in a long time. Most of the dialog is either really interesting or extremely funny. It's simply a charmer. Oh . . . and it's great fun to play as well! http://www.kings-bounty.com/eng/
Disciples III is getting closer to launch! They have a new website up too (in Russian only so far): http://www.disciples3.ru/ And a nice video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLye2jLIOOQ&feature=related
If you're into fantasy TBS tactical battles, Fantasy Wars is pretty cool. And it's sequel, Elven Legacy is due out this month.
Cheers for the replies guys. Finally got through reading a lot of reviews, and definately given me some idea's.
I've never really got on with the Elder Scrolls - I'm too much of an MMOG player - I keep wanting to put up a looking for group tag. Sure they're great but that scope makes me want to play them with friends. Gothic kinda looks the same - please correct me if I'm wrong.
Haven't played any of the fallout series (I hang my head in shame) I'll definately give them a go at some point, but really wanting a fantasy thang right now.
Kings bounty sounds good, definately give that a go. Really like the sound of the humour. Witcher - sommat about that I like - shades of grey, and looks like an interesting story. Gonna do some more research on that one. The whole click flaming sword icons and the oversized inventory could get in the way of the story for me. Kinda annoyed me in Diablo.
Anyone recommend anything a little more action orientated? I'm not an action player gamer - I get frustrated with twitch gaming. I've a friend who bangs on about God of War series although it was the best thing since sliced bread. Don't have a console, but anything out there action wise that's good? The God of War friend suggested Overlord was worth checking out. Looks kinda interesting.
NelsMonsterX - yeah seen that D3 video, you seen this one? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Pg7nZwwnaI Dunno if it's new or if I've just been slacking.
The Witcher and Mass Effect are both action orientated, but both single player. The only RPG with multiplayer i can think of is neverwinter nights 1 or 2. But thats less action orientated
Action oriented == jade empire
Great game, sort of reminds me of the witcher in terms of gameplay, but less depressing storyline and graphics =D
The Witcher, Mass Effect, and Oblivion are great choices.
I've played just about every game mentiioned above (to a greater or lesser extent), and just about every one is worth playing depending on your tastes and interests (except perhaps the Gothic games--while I like the basic concepts, I found the control system too odd and nonintuitive to be any fun). My favorites of the games mentioned would probably be The Witcher and Kings Bounty. But, to be frank, the OP noted that he couldn't deal with travel times or even running around cities in KotOR. Since my main criticism of most Bioware games is the limited size of their locations and world, I wonder how you'll like just about any of the games mentioned above, since they all require at least as much running around as KotOR (Bioware's own Mass Affect) and most require a whole lot more. (BTW, I really wish the dev teams of Bioware and Bethesda could get together. Bioware produces amazing plots, athmosphere, and characterizations, but often a smallish world size broken up into fairly limiting locations, while Bethesda (Oblivion, Fallout 3) produces amazingly large and interesting open ended worlds, but tends to fall down on plot and characterization. A combination of the two could be one heckuva game.)
BTW, the OP noted that he is tired of travel times from MMOs. As a veteran of a dozen or so MMOs, starting with original EQ ten(!) years ago, I'm wondering which MMOs he's played. Especially since WoW, I'd regard travel times in MMOs to be sort of a joke. I'm guessing the OP never played original, non-expansion EQ. Especially at low levels (before players had easier access to druid/wizard ports, let alone the various fast travel shortcuts introduced in later years), travel was for the hardcore. Assuming the boats had not been knocked out by a bug (not uncommon), you might spend a half hour twiddling your thumbs at the dock waiting for a boat (a smart player practiced his fishing skill) that took another 20-30 minutes to reach its desination (complete with the small chance that a couple of different bugs might cause your body and all your gear to end up on the bottom of the ocean, from which you'd have to recover it). And that's just one example. We were in their world then, and we loved it. Since WoW, MMOs are for wimps who have actual lives and such
I would suggest the Avernum series as well as the Generforge series. The first couple games in each are showing thier age now but they are still great fun. The company that makes them is Spiderweb software and they have a very long history of cool rpg games.
Hey umm I know it's not exactly a PC game (LOL), but you have already played Legend of Zelda, right? Hahaha, because I think as far as the kinda game that you are look for goes, the Legend of Zelda series are pretty much the best. You know, RPG/Adventure, strong and classic story line, low inventory management, perfect balance between main quest and side quest, unforgettable dungeons, and the entire series are made of gaming masterpieces.
The only thing bad about the series is that most people already played the xxxx out of everything entry.
EQ old skool, AO - rk2?, Eve-online, EQ2 - US, WoW - EU, WAR - US. MMOG's I can deal with travel time. I know people generally quote pre-planes EQ as the long travel times, but I actually thought Eve pre-warp to 0 was the most onerous. Been a few others, but just doing a free trial don't count in the same way an MMOG player wouldn't count a free MMOG as one =P I did get heavily into Guild Wars PvP for a while.
When I'm playing off-line I want sommat a little more fast an furious. Like an fps... =P No haven't played Zelda, it's console only right?
Game wise fps's I'm good with till about 5 years back. MMOG/RTS/turnbased/4x I know, but beyond that it's pretty loose. What I've otherwised played crpg is Diablo2, KotOR 1&2, dungeon siege, sacred, icewind and mirrorwind. KotOR rocked and diablo was extremely addictive (I'm not conviced that means good =P ). Mirrorwind I wanted to start looking for a group, so stopped that after an hour. Sacred the 1001 subquests bored me, so that got stopped after an hour - and a stupid piece of animation that bugged me. Icewind was too much D&D - only cast a spell once a day, so that got binned - literally. Disk went into gf's vegtable patch as a bird scarer. Dungeon siege wasn't bad, but for some reason the story didn't exactly grip me and a shinier toy came along.
Oh you lucky bastard. You haven't played a single Zelda game? Like ever? Wow, which title should you began? There are all so good...I strongly recommend Wind Waker for the GC, that game is absolutely incredible. Ocarina of Time is always a must play, it's regarded as the greatest game ever made. The gameboy color's Link's Awakening is so perfect, and umm oh Link to the past from SNES is masterful as well. Even the GBA title: Minish Caps is extremely satisfying. I guess what I am trying to say is that as advanture video games goes, and especially for the single players out there, Zelda series just tops, there are no equals.
Technically, Zelda is console only, practically, as a PC gamer, you do have options........................................
you should try Planescape:Torment!!!!! It Has the BEST story i have ever encountered in a Videogame. Alas, the game is dated, and it shows, but give it a try.
olli
Planescape: Torment is an absolutely terrific game, still quite playable despite the old graphics (there's so much to read, it's almost a text adventure anyway, LOL). Unfortunately, I admit that I have never finished it after several tries over the years for reasons that have nothing to do with the quality of the game. The last time I tried it, it wouldn't play nice with my Vista machine.
As for those trying to tell me that a console only RPG is the greatest game of all time, well, this veteran of PC RPGs since Ultima III will take that with a grain of salt. No, make that five or six very large grains. (Confession: I do have a PS3, but it was bought and is used almost exclusively as a Blu-ray player. I have tried a number of games, though, and they only confirmed my admittedly PC-centric bias.)
I know I know, I am a PC gamer. But you just have to play Wind Waker, you just have to try it, it's really amazing, I am that confident that you will love it. Ultima and Zelda are two completely different beasts, they are bot legendary, I don't want to miss neither of them. The whole world pretty much agree that Legend of Zelda series are masterpieces, you just have to try one to understand why.
For Zeldas I would play "A Link to the Past" (SNES), "Ocarina of Time" (N64, pretty similar to A link to the Past but much prettier) or "Majora's Mask" (although this one is very strange for a Zelda game).
System Shock & System Shock 2 were the best of their day, comparitively better than Bioshock imho. Mass Effect would be a safe choice by modern standards...
well.. that wont break u from the big inventory, (tho weapons and gear are NOT important in that game) but for the rapid action Good ( i mean VERY GOOD) stroyline and no travel excpet for the first time u HAVe to get there... i will STRONLY suggest Guildwars!....
cant put a label on that game cuz it peoples dont agree on what it is.... but its fun... that I'm pretty sure
the witcher...best rpg ever
Baldur's Gate, Tales of sword coast. it's all the RPG you'll eveer need. EVER
